I have a persistent problem that I can't figure out how to avoid ...
Problem #1
Whenever my Galaxy Note-3 makes a connection to Gear via bluetooth, it triggers Samsung "Music" to start. However, Music crashes at that instant, with an error message, "Unfortunately, Music has stopped".
Problem #2
Media Controller on Gear works on any music app other than Samsung Music. It works on Google Play Music and PowerAmp. However, that is limited to working properly on following commands: Play/Pause, Skip forward, Skip backward. But - if I attempt to control the volume up/down, then it fails. At this point, I see that Samsung Music has restarted on Note-3 with the same error message.
Note:
I have a stock Note-3. The Gear is also stock, with latest update (MK7).
I don't use Samsung Music. I notice that I can't uninstall it, nor can I disable it. Whenever I force it to stop (Applications setting), then it reactivates at the time of either above two problem events.
HELP PLEASE !
============== UPDATE
-> SOLVED: see page 2 below.
Can anyone confirm (unlike my experience):
1) Does Samsung "Music" work?
2) Does Gear's Media Control allow volume to be controlled up/down?
Honestly. My best advice is just to uninstall (or freeze in titanium) Samsung music player.

I wish I could but I can't.
I have a stock rom and want to continue with it. As such, native apps like Music can't be uninstalled.
The Application Manager doesn't offer "disable" for this one app.
I love stock too I couldn't find the option to stop the stock music player doing anything, so that was my only option :/
Root doesn't mean custom rom. Like I said it's pretty easy to root your phone, and stay stock (like me). Root just means you have more privalidges with the file system (essentially).
It's an option if no one else can offer anything better!

That is good news then. If I could ask you something, before I begin the root process ...
If I root my phone:
- do I have to reinstall all my apps?
- do all loose all my settings (emails accounts, etc)?
How do I root the phone?
Go to the Note 3 section on xda. They'll probably have a sticky explaining the best way

I had a similar issue with my S4. Samsung music stayed persistant in my notifications bar running in the background. It was also on my lockscreen as a widget. I was able to go into settings/app manager and Turn Off the app. I did a reboot of the phone and all is well. I have since gone back in and turned the app back on and it does not repeat the errant behavior.
It's really weird that whenever you connect your phone to the Gear it starts the Music app, mine hasn't done that ... yet. However, as far as controlling music, mine has worked perfectly fine with Google Music (or Play Music or whatever it's called now). Also, volume up and down should work, however, the first time after you connect your Gear, if you try turning up the volume on the phone, an alert will pop up saying something like "Are you sure you want to increase volume? Loud music can be damaging" (forgive my inaccuracy), you have to press OK on the phone first, then it will work fine. It's really irritating, but better than nothing.
I hope that made sense?
Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions.
What I have deduced is:
- Samsung Music consists of two modules, but the user is aware of only one. The front end is what the user interacts with; it is essentially a file manager. The back end is the audio processor. In my case, there is a disconnect between the two. I can enter the front end and see the list of song files, but I can not play any song which is because the back end is not able to be accessed.
- There is evidence of disconnect between front end and back end. In the front end, I can enter [Settings ^ Play speed]; what I should see is a sliding scale from 0.5x to 2.0x. In my case, the labels are missing when moving the slide bar, and the slide bar does not remember my change rather it remains at 10% setting. I suspect the speed setting is stored in the back end, for which the front end (in settings) can not access the variable's parameter, nor can it later update the value.
- The back end program of Music does work for me. This is proven by selecting a song file in "My Files" explorer, then choosing "Sound player" from the context menu. For me, the song file then successfully plays. I suspect the player is the back end of Music because the icon in the context menu is the same (blue triangle with green music note).
- When Gear is making a connection with Note, it asks Note for the name of default media player. This causes Note to open momentarily the Samsung Music player in silent mode. Note then closes Music as experienced by most users, but in my case Music stays open because of a bug on my system/configuration.
Why is this happening?
- Some writers elsewhere wrote about the interconnection between many Samsung apps because of their interdependence on TouchWiz. Perhaps Music is one such program. Maybe something (other app or my configuration) has triggered Music to break for me.
- At this point I am left suspecting another user app has caused Samsung Music to break between the front and back end. Note, this problem has only arisen in the past month, but in that time I have installed a few more apps and the previous apps have auto-updated themselves. So, I am now left to uninstalling them and testing their effect.
Problem SOLVED
Alas - Problem SOLVED.
It is frequently suggested that Music Player can be repaired by flushing the cache in "Music". In my case, this never solved my problem.
However, today I discovered another cache that can also contribute to the problem, and thus offer a solution.
The following worked for me ...
Step 1
- Settings ^ Application Manager
- App = "Media Storage"
- Action = "Clear data"
Step 2
- Samsung Music
- All song files are removed.
Step 3
- Scan Media
Step 4
- Samsung Music
- All song files are relisted.
- All song files now play. YEAH
On my gear I noticed that the quick reply feature for text messages does not work unless you are using the stock app I the note 3. Also the media controller did not work with any app other than the Samson music app. Did I configure something wrong or is that the way it is designed?

can't talk about text replying, but 3rd party music players works for me.
i'm using poweramp and i am able to control music using my gear. it doesn't show albumart though.
just make sure you do not have more than 1 music player installed, as sometimes it goes crazy and it will control music through samsung app...

dont know with the messages, but for the media controller i got a dirty fix that works well in my case.
i only use spotify for music, and a audiobook player app, so i simply froze the stock music app with titanium backup and now it works like a charm for my other apps.
the funny thing was that before i froze it, i could control other audio apps, but i had to first push a button on the media controller, then go to the phone and kill the stock music app, after that it recognized the other audio app..
hope this helps :good:

That's awesome!
I'm using the Gear's Media Controller app. On my rooted Note 3, I froze the Samsung Music app, then the Gear's Media Controller app controls whatever the front most media app is on the Note 3.
So I'll launch the Yatse XBMC remote app, and can then control XBMC with the Gear!
...nothin' as elaborate as what you've got there though, all I can do basically is pause/play.
So, how do you do this?

recently rooted my gear and have the watchon app on my note 3.
#DoWant to get the mile and put it on my gear! digging through XDA now for the gear .apk from the version pulled from the samsung store. Surprised the NULL rom didn't have support for it... although that's quite a bit to ask for my rooted watch now that I read it again

Thanks for your comment, but I'll wait until Shinji replies with his setup.
Firstly thank you for posting the video links!
Everything is very simple, I just install the rom Nul_23 on my gear (for my gear can access the Internet via bluetooth) and after I installed via playstore Yatse the application. One thing to be careful is to set Yatse in such a way as it can sync, without wifi (just a setting unchecked it seems).

I can't setting host in Yatse, at least in free version. always got failed to connect host even all settings done correctly. But it gives me idea to check Official XBMC Remote app that I'm using on my note 3 to contol XMBC conected via HDMI to my HDTV, and it works birliant! I can now same time control XMBC installed in my note 3 and on my PC by switching hosts instantly! Its now best media controler for Galaxy gear! I can brose folders added to library in note or PC and play control XMBC in every aspect and fucntion! I was looking for some media controller but this is better then I could even think!
Ok, quickly tutorial how to:
0) Connect your gear with phone, set up internet thetring and bluetooth internet access on gear
1) Install on your device prompt version of XMBC (Windows on PC or Android on your phone or both)
xbmc.org/xbmc-13-1-gotham-rc1/ (scroll down to find links under "Conclusion")
2) Install Official XBMC Remote on your Gear
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.xbmc.android.remote
3)Then you have to install another app on your gear that can open menu soft key inside your Gear to add and set up host:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rhoadster91.floatingsoftkeys
4) Open Floating Soft Keys *ROOT* and try to set it up to your needs, try to play with this app as it very usefull and easy to understand. Soft keys will stay always on top of other apps, when you thick "collapse to notification.." when you long press back button it will collapse and can be reopen from notification bar by tap on "click to..
5) Now open your XMBC program on device and follow instructions to config XMBC:
yatse.leetzone.org/redmine/projects/androidwidget/wiki/XbmcConfig
6) Now you need to find out your IP (Windows: Start-run-cmd-ipconfig, Android 4.4.2 note 3: click on your wireless connection)
7) Open Official XBMC Remote on your Gear, tap menu key from floating soft key, Add Host: set up same as in XMBC main app and click connect.
8) Enjoy!
You can add more then one host from manage XMBC hosts in settings and simply switch between them from menu!
(this is my frist tutorial ever so please be kind
So, after about a week with the Gear VR, here are my initial list of improvements. Feel free to add.
- Youtube Mode,
- Ability to disable Gear VR Autostart upon insertion.
- Ability to run Cardboard Apps
- Ability to run Oculus DK Apps
- Back button twice removes the need to confirm yes or no.
- Ability to delete videos
- Ability to disable my photos from showing in Oculus ( yes, my personal photos in dcim)
- Ability to change seats in the theater.
- Subtitles in movies etc.
- Ability to fast forward/ rewind Oculus 360 Video Files.
- Ability to swipe up and down in oculus photo so you can jump to next category of images instead of just next image.
PS - From the oculus site, the best way to insert the Note 4 without triggering vr app is to first tilt the usb port on the gear vr upward then slide the Note 4 below it.
.
Oh sure, more to add:
Netflix, Google play, amazon streaming tv and movies in oculus cinema mode would be epic. Being able to run any app on the big screen of the cinema mode would rock, like emulators limelight game streaming, etc., using bt controller.
Double tap back should open the pass thru camera mode so I can quickly see what's going on. Adding wireless download of cities 360 images on the fly.

I would say this is the most important one and would resolve much of the rest of the list. Thanks to cardboard there is already a lot of VR content that, while it may not be able to use the additional sensors and controls int he Gear VR, will still work with it. You can not entirely insert it into the USB port o accomplish this, but this is a very poor workaround and it seems like the buttons should still be able to work even out of the app since it's seen by the device as a mouse input.

Maybe you can activate the private mode and put your personal photos in there, so that they can be only accessed by your fingerprint or password. Then they shouldn't show up in the Gear VR aswell.

Yeah that's defintely an option but more work I shouldn't be doing. Gear VR automatically showing my dcim videos on Oculus Cinema is kinda weird. I only want it to show videos under it's own folders.

Yeah, i'd love to be able to disable it. Maybe there is a way to disable one of the main Oculus app with the application manager. I'm not quite sure which one to disable at the moment as there are quite a few oculus related apps showing. Will tinker with it.
To enable/disable subs just use the gallery viewer to find the movie you want. From there there's an option for subs once the movie is playing . Only get the void viewing option though.
Here's a thread on using cardboard apps and playing SBS 3D video on BS player (should work on other players too) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/gear-vr/general/gear-vr-google-cardboard-3d-vids-t2973607
- Ability to focus eyes individually - This would require moving the lens rather than the phone, but if your eyes are not the same, one will always be blurry. Unless you have contacts i guess.
- Better ventilation - My lens gets steamed up
how to
how do you put gear vr in Youtube Mode,
- Ability to disable Gear VR Autostart upon insertion.
- Ability to run Cardboard Apps
- Ability to run Oculus DK Apps
can you make a video or upload a how to on here

Adjust for different eye distances.
My eyes are close together (low PD) and I feel like it may be affecting image quality. Samsung IPD claims is 55mm to 71mm, so I am at the low end.

I figured out a surefire way to stop Gear VR from starting for now. I just use Titanium Backup and the "Gear VR Service" WILL show. I just freeze it and unfreeze when needed. I tried the other app that was recommended but that for sure did not show Gear VR Service on the list of apps to disable.

I'm not sure as I have root. But one great thing about this is, it actually lets me use the trackpad on the Gear VR. I can even swipe forward and back along with the regular tap.

A tablet made for the gearVR would be cool too! Something like a drawing tablet that ends up functioning and looking like the fancy tablets in those marvel movies
Kind XDA users,
I figured out a way to stream YouTube using a Note 4 on Android version 4.4.4 while the screen is off.
Also tried this on S6 and different phones on v5.0+.
Sadly it does not work on these models / versions.
Please note I use the default browser, I have no clue or it would work using a different browser. Tried to search or it was posted before, could not find it, thought I should share it, so here you go:
1. ) Find a YouTube video and launch fullscreen (from stock browser).
2.) Drag your status bar all the way down while the video plays fullscreen.
3.) Press the power button, screen should turn off but the audio keeps playing.
Edit: It seems that when you create a floating window and launch a fullscreen video in it, then unfocus the window (by for example tapping the homescreen) and powering off the device: results in the same thing.
Perhaps this way it would work on 4.4.4+ not sure, can not test at this moment.
Kind regards, Stefan.
I just tried the second trick with note 4 and it didn't work
Guys, for this feature search for OGYoutube.
