So, after about a week with the Gear VR, here are my initial list of improvements. Feel free to add.
- Youtube Mode,
- Ability to disable Gear VR Autostart upon insertion.
- Ability to run Cardboard Apps
- Ability to run Oculus DK Apps
- Back button twice removes the need to confirm yes or no.
- Ability to delete videos
- Ability to disable my photos from showing in Oculus ( yes, my personal photos in dcim)
- Ability to change seats in the theater.
- Subtitles in movies etc.
- Ability to fast forward/ rewind Oculus 360 Video Files.
- Ability to swipe up and down in oculus photo so you can jump to next category of images instead of just next image.
PS - From the oculus site, the best way to insert the Note 4 without triggering vr app is to first tilt the usb port on the gear vr upward then slide the Note 4 below it.
.
Oh sure, more to add:
Netflix, Google play, amazon streaming tv and movies in oculus cinema mode would be epic. Being able to run any app on the big screen of the cinema mode would rock, like emulators limelight game streaming, etc., using bt controller.
Double tap back should open the pass thru camera mode so I can quickly see what's going on. Adding wireless download of cities 360 images on the fly.

I would say this is the most important one and would resolve much of the rest of the list. Thanks to cardboard there is already a lot of VR content that, while it may not be able to use the additional sensors and controls int he Gear VR, will still work with it. You can not entirely insert it into the USB port o accomplish this, but this is a very poor workaround and it seems like the buttons should still be able to work even out of the app since it's seen by the device as a mouse input.

Maybe you can activate the private mode and put your personal photos in there, so that they can be only accessed by your fingerprint or password. Then they shouldn't show up in the Gear VR aswell.

Yeah that's defintely an option but more work I shouldn't be doing. Gear VR automatically showing my dcim videos on Oculus Cinema is kinda weird. I only want it to show videos under it's own folders.

Yeah, i'd love to be able to disable it. Maybe there is a way to disable one of the main Oculus app with the application manager. I'm not quite sure which one to disable at the moment as there are quite a few oculus related apps showing. Will tinker with it.
To enable/disable subs just use the gallery viewer to find the movie you want. From there there's an option for subs once the movie is playing . Only get the void viewing option though.
Here's a thread on using cardboard apps and playing SBS 3D video on BS player (should work on other players too) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/gear-vr/general/gear-vr-google-cardboard-3d-vids-t2973607
- Ability to focus eyes individually - This would require moving the lens rather than the phone, but if your eyes are not the same, one will always be blurry. Unless you have contacts i guess.
- Better ventilation - My lens gets steamed up
how to
how do you put gear vr in Youtube Mode,
- Ability to disable Gear VR Autostart upon insertion.
- Ability to run Cardboard Apps
- Ability to run Oculus DK Apps
can you make a video or upload a how to on here

Adjust for different eye distances.
My eyes are close together (low PD) and I feel like it may be affecting image quality. Samsung IPD claims is 55mm to 71mm, so I am at the low end.

I figured out a surefire way to stop Gear VR from starting for now. I just use Titanium Backup and the "Gear VR Service" WILL show. I just freeze it and unfreeze when needed. I tried the other app that was recommended but that for sure did not show Gear VR Service on the list of apps to disable.

I'm not sure as I have root. But one great thing about this is, it actually lets me use the trackpad on the Gear VR. I can even swipe forward and back along with the regular tap.

A tablet made for the gearVR would be cool too! Something like a drawing tablet that ends up functioning and looking like the fancy tablets in those marvel movies

From the Oculus forums:
This isn't perfect. It's made for 3D TVs but can work with a little setup.
You will need a controller and some common sense. If you are missing either of these, you should come back when they are both ready.
This howto does not cover adding sources to Kodi. If this is your first time using it, visit http://kodi.wiki/ for more info.
Head over to http://mirrors.xbmc.org/nightlies/android/arm/ and grab the newest build.
Once you install, add any sources or plugins you may want. I believe they have Hulu, Netflix, and some cable TV channels available.
Get familiar with how to use Cardboard apps or enable developer mode.
Get everything how you want it, then open Settings followed by System.
Video Output should be selected and you should see some options for stereoscopic mode.
Make sure you have connected your controller, enable side-by-side mode, and insert the phone into the Gear VR.
Finish any additional setup, such as navigating to Video Calibration and adjusting the view so you can see the entire menu comfortably.
Enjoy your pseudo-VR streaming videos.

I haven't tried this yet, but I did play around with SBS mode in XBMC before and you will have to shrink the view a bit to work with the limited FOV of the headsets.

Not on the first launch, but I'm pretty sure it saves the setting for any launch after that.
From my experience, 7 should be: ...navigating to Video Calibration and adjusting the ratio of height and width to be a square.

I don't have the actual Gear VR headset for my Note 4. But I did manage to get the Oculus app to work and running. Even managed to download some apps for it. But I can't get any of the apps to open. I get the message "To open this application, insert your device into your Gear VR".
Surely there must be a way to trick it into thinking it's inserted into the Gear VR headset so that I can use it on my generic VR headset.
Does anyone know how? My searches have only yielded results about editing the AndroidManifest.xml of which I can only assume to be the actual package apk file of each app. Which I don't think applies to what I'm trying to do.
Any ideas? Thanks.
Ok I was able to enable Developer Mode from within Settings->Gear VR Service->Manage Storage and tapping on the version number 7 times.
That was AFTER I installed Sideload VR and created an Oculus account to obtain an Oculus Signature file and from Sideload, downloaded a sample apk with my sig injected into it.
Which now allows me to run Oculus apps without needing to insert it into a Gear VR.
However, I've noticed that nothing moves. It's not sensing my phone's gyroscopes so all is useless. And further searching suggests that Oculus uses a built-in gyro head tracking system INSIDE the Gear VR. Which is strange. I've always thought the Gear VR was just a headset shell. Why wouldn't it use the phone's gyros for movements?

It's because the gear vr sensors are significantly more sensitive than standard phone gyros for a smoother and entirely better /more comfortable experience. The gear VR is far from just a shell, really is worth the cost.

I have the developerboard and flashed the open rift firmware on it. My pc detects it as a rift dk1. When I connect the board to my fone with a hist cable the board lights up nicely.
But I am unable to get oculus home running without a gearvr. (The chip on the board is the same as in the dk1 and I think the gear vr uses that chip too)
So any help getting oculus home running on my s6 with gear vr would be great!
nevermind
I've got it all working.. in developer mode I can start oculus home and the ST32f3 board works great. I have head tracking!!
Trying to develop on the oculus and i can't seem to figure out where to put the sig file. I put it in /assets and it still tells me it needs to have me plug it into my unit, which is a pain.
You must turn development mode on.
In android go to settings, apps, app manager, gear vr service. There tab the version a few times. If you have placed you signature file correctly you will see you are a developer. Then in gear vr service you now have a switch for developer mode. Turn it on and test away!
I succeeded in repeating what Thai did. I can now run Oculus VR app and access Oculus video or Netflix VR but I cannot navigate within each app on my AT&T Note 4. I beleive this is due to the reasons stated earlier that the gear VR has different / more sensitive sensors than the note 4 itself.
Any idea on how to adjust the sensor configs to work with the internal note 4 components?
Also I am trying to get this working to use with my kids Viewmaster VR goggles which are awesome just want to be able to do netflix and watch our own movies in VR.
i managed to enable developer mode but my gyroscope doesnt seem to be working with the oculus apps, is there any way i can enable my s6's gyroscope with the apps, or at least a way to control the apps, touching the screen doesnt really do much when the cursor is dead at the middle of the screen.
I don't think so but what you can do (I've done this and works great) is get a stm32f3discovery board for about 25$ on ebay. Then flash the open gear vr firmware and you are good to go.
And if you connect the board to a pc and install the open source foculus rift drivers and you have a gtx videocard you can play Dk1 stuff!!
http://www.roadtovr.com/can-now-clone-gear-vr-test-virtual-reality-apps/
Simply use a micro USB extension cable to connect the Gear VR with the cable to the phone, then you don't have to wear the headset but can still move it to see the response on the screen
Oculus
Where does Oculus keep the apk files downloaded, there is this demo I downloaded and than uninstalled, but it keeps in my Library to install again and there is no way to get rid of it, is it possible to delete that file manually? Also where does Oculus download the apk files on your phone? Thank you
Controller
I was wondering whether a bluetooth controller could navigate the gear vr without having to use the gyro sensors. This could be good as it removes the need for the board

so i downloaded the oculus home apk (use google) then put vr in developer mode - works 100%. thanks guys
Anyone here familiar with this? It's pretty cool, sort of a sideloading market for people to put up their creations, doesn't post the programs in Oculus VR, but the programs work within the Gear VR headset.

Pretty cool. I got Quake VR from there, plus a not half bad Youtube theater app.

samsung vr apps on generic vr system (like vr box??)
hello guys.
my idea is try samsung gear vr system and apps with a generic vr box (that i will buy).
i have an s6 edge.
it is possible?
for now i doing some test.
i jave already installed oculus home and gear vr apps on my smartphone (thanks to sideloadvr) and setting devoloper mode.
gear vr apps are started and worked.
the problem is accelometer that dont work...
i cant move image....why???

I had the same problem. The epub you are loading is likely still drm protected. If you can remove the drm protection ( not for pirating-must own the book) it does work. However the book I loaded now works perfectly in all other epub readers and in Virtualex Reader does not display pictures (just text) and the text is in a courier like font (blech). I uninstalled once I got it working. ?

No luck here. I will keep trying, but considering that you can't control the font it might not be worth it anyways.

When you install SideLoad VR, it takes you through the process of generating an Oculus key which in turn enables you to install the Oculus home store. Unfortunately, anything you launch from the store still asks that you plug in GearVR... Wish there was a way around this. Surely whatever info OpenGear is sending to phones to emulate GearVR should be able to be run as a server on your PC over the same USB cord instead?

Nope, it is not a DRM protected.
Hmm, for some reason i have a 18 digit ID, which causes all sorts of trouble as the oculus page will just accept 16 digits :/ Anyone know how to get around this?
hi, i use it with my samsung S6 edge gear
sideloadvr and download steam teather
then connect stream teather with nvidia shield ...goes ok
but i wonder if i can use it with team viewer or something like that so i can use the gear vr with all my desktop
i got a question about playing 3d movies on the gear vr...i saw lots of tutorials how to watch them and this thing really got me confused.....so after u convert the videos and all you can watch them using the player inside the oculus apk by having the cinema(etc) background .why cant it be played by not connecting the phone to the gear usb or by using package disabler and be full screen ? i'm sorry if this is a dumb question but i really want to know......
You can do as you say but the aspect will be all wrong in most apps. You can adjust the pixel ratio within Kodi to compensate but this will use your VR as simply a 3D viewer (no vr theatre). If you want to view your movie full screen in 2D from your phone directly, use Kodi ( Isangard downloaded from kodi website- Jarvais version from Play Store doesn't work) and select view 3D movies as 2D/monoscopic.
im more than happy using kodi to view 3d files after adjusting the settings.
If I helped, please use the thanks button. ?

Gear VR Service has to be disabled first. If your phone is rooted then you can just freeze it. If you are not rooted you can use a package disabler from the play store. (Use search). If you just want to try it out first just lift the USB port on the gear vr and sneak your phone under it - a little loose, but works.
Ace that's great thank you. I have a package disabler already that I use to stop the game stuff running as the picture is crap!! Thank you ever so much. I know what I'll be doing tonight ?
I use MilkVR to watch all 3D movies. If you dont live in the US dl it though a proxyserver.
so milk vr is like oculus cinema cause i try to see my own movies and the oculus video said to put through the camera, i dont know if oculus put it up from the sd card of sg7?
I have heard of Native SBS for the usage of non VR apps but it requires a rooted phone which I can't do because of company policy. Is there any alternatives that basically splits the screen and adjust focus to work on the Gear? Would be awesome to be able to have a full screen view of some non VR games and Apps.
I'm actually wondering the same thing. Figure I would bump this instead of making a new thread.
Been googling for a while now....
Edit:
Ah ok I see now after finally receiving my Gear VR a couple days ago.
The app must support "Stereoscopic view" before you can even use Gear VR in it. It is possible to mount the phone in the gear VR without it plugging so it doesn't go to the app. So you will see whatever you want on your screen, however it won't realistically be usable. For 3rd party apps such as PPSSPP, you can turn on "Google Cardboard view" and use your VR and I must say it works pretty damn well.
