I just got my Nexus 7 tablet today and installed an XO screen protector, by the book. It works fine for the longest time no issues. Then all of a sudden as the tablet was locked, I picked up and unlocked it and the screen was faded very badly. Like it was almost white as you can see with the 3 screenshots below that look faded. Then after about 10 minutes the colors come back.
I purchased from Sam's club with the warranty. Should I take it back for an exchange immediately? If I do this I lost the $20 XO Skin cover I now have installed on the device. Some may ask if the screen protector could be causing the fade. I guess it could be but why would it then come back later? Should I just power it down and wait for a day to see if its just an anomaly?
Both Good and Bad pictures attached below, should be fairly obvious which are good and which are bad.
Please HELP.
It's not your screen protector, I bought mine from the Google Play Store and has the same issue... Its very annoying :-S

Thanks for validating that its not the screen protector. I hope soon who knows these screens better than me can explain why its happening. I think I need to take it back and exchange.
Im trying to get a replacement from Google but lines are way too busy...
Contact XOSkins and see if you can exchange. They may honor the normal warranty exchange of you paying shipping both ways. You send the old one back, they send you a new one.

Really? On what basis do I ask for this? Do I just call and tell them my tablet went bad after I placed the skin on it?
Thanks a ton. BTW I don't know if you have the gray cover Google was selling with the N7 but it is AWESOME. Very sleek and snug to the device and feels solid for a cover. But no magnet
I'm having the same problem on my tablet. Really frustrating

Any luck?
I have been working on some other things and have now noticed that it takes about 5 minutes for the color to fully restore the color. When I first wake the tablet it is extremely cloudy and washed out to the point the colors are barely visible. Then slowly the colors return over about a 5 minute period.

Any luck on the replacement? I think I am going to take mine in tomorrow to Sams and see what they say. If they give me trouble I did purchase the warranty bout I am hoping that Sams will just replace it with a new one.

No doubt I hope they will replace it, I can't think of anything I can do to fix this!
I'm having the same issue with the whiteout. I've noticed it after sleep mode.

They do have a warranty for scratched or torn screen protectors. I don't know if they'll cover it if you applied the skin and had to get a warranty replacement for the device. I would Peel it off right before you send the nexus back and check with XO.
Also, someone else found that this may be caused by some special function of the tegra 3 that causes movies to have truer color, yet washes out the screen when done with the video. It might be a software issue.

Sucks cuz I live in Japan.
Also, once the screen protector answer was given that, no, it's not your protector, why were there 10 answers about replacing the damn screen protectors?

Mine is on its way back for replacement.
Google didn't even question me about it or try do any troubleshooting. Just sent an RMA email and UPS label email to me.
Makes me believe that they know about this issue and just go ahead and send a new one out.

Guy guys it's not your tablet your wasting your time sending it back it's confirmed as a tegrachip problem there is a fix on this forum but you need root.Your find your replacements will be the same just have to try the fix or sit tight and wait for google to address the problem via ota update sometime soon.
I tried the "fix". Didn't work. Google didn't even try to get me to troubleshoot. I told them the issue with a pic attached and got the RMA instructions back. They know there's a problem and they are not trying to help anyone fix it.

I like the display but noticed a difference in color. I'm not sure if its because I'm comparing it to my one x. I want to try the "fix" but I'm holding off a little to see whether Google sends out an ota soon.

Umm mine does this.. Noticeably after playing the included transformers video, the screen will be faded for around 10 seconds.
I'm inclined to think it's a Tegra 3 problem. I remember reading about 6 months ago that the upcoming Tegra 3 chip was meant to dynamically adjust the backlight while playing videos, for power saving.
It's probably just this backlight adjustment system glitching up and not knowing what to do after a movie is exited. Doesn't really explain why it's happening for sleep wakes though
Edit:
Managed to find the exact article I read, was longer than 6 months ago lol.
The technology is called DIDIM and Jen-Hsun described how it works. “It’s the ability to per pixel, per frame, per scene to modulate the backlight so quickly that we over a long period of time, reduce the amount of backlight intensity and backlight energy by nearly half. We save as much power in the backlight without changing the visual fidelity at all to save, essentially, the entire power used by our chip.” NVIDIA says your eyes see the same color temperature, so you can’t tell the difference.

When my phone battery gets low on my OB I start to get random dark patches up my screen if I'm on full brightness and using the phone for long periods of time. It's almost like some LED's start to power off in the LCD. This can be fixed with a quick lock/sleep then unlock/wake of my phone. Does anyone else have this problem?

Lol think you burned off some of your LCDs.But seriously i think you should send it to LG service centre cause its probably a hardwarevproblem. All the best!

Nope, it's still on the original LG GB rom, I'm going to wait until ICS comes out (if it ever does) to see how good it is before I install custom roms on my OB. I dropped my OB from a very short height one day (out of my pocket while I was standing up from sitting on the ground) and it bounced off the concrete, it now has a small dent in the plastic on one of the sides, do you think the service center will care about this cause I don't want to be charged $55 just for them to send it back and not do anything about the problem.
I dont think so...if you dont want to pay, you can ask them to see what they can do and if it costs something ask them to notify you
If the one working takes your warranty card/paper without saying anything it means you dont have to pay
LCD Displays generally have this behaviour if one uses the same images for hours together, But i have never experienced this with my phone, Try using phone @ 40% brightness which is more than enough at all times, It will save ur battery consumption as well.

Might have something to do with the auto brightness setting. Does this also happen when you set the brightness manually?

The screenshot thing wasn't serious tho, hardware trouble can't be captured that way .
But this is definitely not software related.
Maybe unplugging and reconnecting the display connector helps, if not this is probably a fault in how the phone controls your display. You'll probably have this problem with every rom you try. If that's the case, put a stock rom on it and get it repaired.
It hasn't anything to do with having the same image on for a long time because the dark spots appear random on your screen. Might be a backlight problem.

I noticed that every once in a while, the touchscreen on my Z1 "skips". i.e., if I draw a straight line with my finger, it will actually come out as a few short lines with a break between them.
I notice it most in the pattern unlock screen. I will draw my pattern, but it will connect 2 dots, jump, connect another 2 dots, jump again, until I get the pattern wrong error, and in the second attempt everything is fine.
Has anyone else experienced that?

This happens every once in a while for me while using Swype keyboard. I thought it was a Swype issue, but if you're having this then maybe it's the phone. Haven't noticed it anywhere else but haven't tested.

I've run into something like this when trying to pull up the pie menu. Normally, sliding up onto the screen from below will trigger the pie menu to pop up (similar to the default "google now" trigger gesture). Every once in a while it'll instead register as a number of taps on whatever is already on that area of the screen (thus triggering some untended action or link most of the time). Of course it won't happen when I'm trying to reproduce it or running some kind of test, but when I least expect it, it happens again.
To verify this issue you can also try going to: Settings, About Phone (last entry on the bottom), Diagnostics, Test Device, Touchscreen.
If the recorded line really does skip you should contact your reseller/ Sony.
If it is just an occasional error it might be Software and not Hardware related. I have not had this problem yet, though.
Oh finally so it's not me alone. Great phone but this single problem lets it down. I'm suspecting a lot ppl have it and dont realise. Not everyone uses swype keyb or swype pattern unlock.
My suspicion is the sony screen protector fitted at factory. Tempted to rip it off.

EDIT : Okay, I have just went back to 524 firmware to test and I can confirm that the problem still persists.
No problem here, maybe it's related to screen protector?
Ok now

Hi, is your problem fixed? havent tried changing my screen guard.
Nope not really even though I was convinced at first. Problem comes and goes randomly.
My real issue is using Swype and it's driving me mad. As a workaround if I use my thumb it works fine. Must be the amount of surface contact while I swype.

So is hardware problem and will never be fixed?
For few weeks I never saw that problem on mine so I was not worry about it but today I tested few nice games and I realized that after a minute playing the game (Minimotor or HAWX) the virtual joystick stopping working. I have to retouch the joystick with my hand or take off my hand from the phone. All the time.
This is bad, so the Flagship Device is comming to be a Crap Device.

I've had a strange bug since I got the phone that I'm wondering if anyone else has seen (don't think it is hardware).
I can reproduce it every morning after I wake up. Conditions are as follows:
Phone is on the clock daydream while charging. I use Sleep As Android as my alarm. Every morning when my alarm is going off and I reach for my phone half of the screen is not working and or black.
I just had a recurrence of this in the xda app after I lost wifi connection and was exciting a thread (pressing the back button) during the handoff to LTE. Easy fix is to just hit the power button to turn the screen off then turn it back on. Works right away.
Anyone seen or read about anything similar?
Thanks!
I made a post earlier about screen touch issues and this is one of mine as well. I can't reproduce it like you can but the right half of the screen just drops off to touch.
Have you seen the half (or third) of the screen go completely black? Seriously Wtf. I've only had it happen probably 4 times.... Comes back on immediately and worms as expected if I press the power button twice.

Picked it up from tmobile on Wed morning.
Also, those issues seem different from what I read.. Screen is *completely* black and they get stuck. Mine works fine 100% except when I wake up with the prior conditions (over night, phone is on clock daydream, dimmed and I am woke up with Sleep As Android alarm). It has only happened once in any other circumstance. Also, my phone updated to LRX21O upon first boot.
At this point I can't tell if it is software or hardware... Not sure how tmobile handles this as I bought directly from them (no insurance as of yet) or if I go straight to Motorola?
I just wish I could conclusively rule out a hardware issue.
I'm having a similar issue. It seems to definitely be intermittent though. Also, I've only experienced it when my phone is in landscape mode. It goes back to normal when I flip it to portrait mode.
Did you ever find anything else out about the issue OP?

Nothing other than what is in here. Still happens to me, though much less frequently. Hoping the 5.1 update rumored for Feb solves some of the quirks.
I honestly think this is a hardware issue of some sort. I had my original Nexus 6 for weeks and throughout heavy usage, I never had any issues. The first day I received a replacement device from Google, half of my screen would freeze/go black when in landscape watching videos, playing games, and sometimes even browsing the web. This was with 100% stock ROM and kernel without root (which rules out that being an issue). I tried reflashing the stock image and the issue still persists.
I contacted the GPS customer service last night and ordered another replacement device. This is issue is certainly specific to this phone, my first device was used heavily and this never happened even once.
I am convinced it is hardware as well.
I am experiencing the same issue with my phone and opened a ticket with Google yesterday and I want mine replaced. It's not just the Nexus 6 that's suffering from this as some Droid Turbo users are experiencing it as well.

Same thing here. Tmobile 64 GB nexus 6. Bought mine from T Mobile, but they don't have a replacement to send me, so I contacted Motorola, and they sent me a new one that arrives tomorrow. I hope the same thing doesn't happen with this one.

Look on the positive side of things, 50% less battery drain due to screen usage...
I still think this is, in my case, specifically software. Other people have reported different issues that are most likely hardware, don't think mine is. Also it has only happened two or three times in the past month, seems to with screen on and rotation occurring at the same time, though I can't confirm or repro reliably.
Well, just had my replacement processed over the phone. Only potential issue is that they said it may be a refurbished device. Anyone know how/if there is a way to tell??
I am not sure if this is somehow related-but my first Nexus 6 I got from t-mobile was working fine and on the second day of owning it the touch screen stopped working! I mean it won't register any touch whatsoever! The phone was just charging and I just used it like 30min ago....tried rebooting, resetting-nothing helped-went to a t-mobile store and replaced with a new one. The second one works...for now. The strange part is that they were no issues-it worked flawlessly and all of a sudden just stopped responding to touch.
I have never experienced issues like this with any smartphone in my life-I have owned android smartphones ever since the G1 was released...

Can you post a picture of where? I don't see any dates listed on the box.
On the bottom right just before SeQ#
But a better way to check is to boot into the bootloader/fastboot hit valume down until you see barcode then push power.
For me the date it shows is 1 day before the date on the box. The box says 2014-11-16 bootloader says 2014-11-15.
So I noticed something today... I had my s6 laying flat on my bed and I went to type a message in Hangouts. The keyboard was almost entirely unresponsive. So I picked up the phone and loaded a different app and the keyboard worked fine. I went back to Hangouts and it was indeed working fine again. I thought maybe it was just a hiccup and didn't give it any more thought. Until a short while later I was laying down again, this time with Chrome loaded. I went to enter a url and again the keyboard was largely unresponsive. I picked up the phone and the keyboard worked again. At this point I got this crazy idea that perhaps the s6 was smart enough to know I was "holding" my phone so I set it back down on my bed and with one hand tried to do a bunch of tasks like loading apps, typing, gestures from the Nova launcher home screen... all of these actions were either very flaky or simply did not respond at all.... until I used my other hand to touch the side of the phone. Presto! The screen was responsive again! Is this some sort of #touchgate??? Is anyone else experiencing this? Can anyone else reproduce it? I'm really at a loss here and I often enjoy being lazy and using my phone with one hand while it sits flat on its own. I've been testing this over and over to make certain I'm not just losing my mind. :/
Im having the same issue... i believe when u hold the phone in ur hand it completes the "circuit" and when ur not its like its not grounded or something.. also having the phone plugged resolved the issue too regardless if its in hand or laid down ...sorry dont know how else to explain it... and having a screen protector and case seemed to make it even worse... i had the same issue with my nexus 7 (2013) and having a screen proctor on it made the screen almost unusable.. i never found a fix to the nexus 7 i just didnt use a screen protector again

Hmm... that's possible I guess. I'll have to test that later tonight. I have a case on mine currently with no issues (Spigen Neo Hybrid Metal) but when I'm at home I normally have it off. But with or without Nova, it's weird that simply touching the side of the phone would make the screen function properly.
I know i thought it was strange as well but sure enough when someone told me about that on my nexus 7 that was the only way to get the screen to work properly was to touch the device while using it or have it plugged in... im not sure if its the same issue but it seems very similar to me on my galaxy s6
