I've had a strange bug since I got the phone that I'm wondering if anyone else has seen (don't think it is hardware).
I can reproduce it every morning after I wake up. Conditions are as follows:
Phone is on the clock daydream while charging. I use Sleep As Android as my alarm. Every morning when my alarm is going off and I reach for my phone half of the screen is not working and or black.
I just had a recurrence of this in the xda app after I lost wifi connection and was exciting a thread (pressing the back button) during the handoff to LTE. Easy fix is to just hit the power button to turn the screen off then turn it back on. Works right away.
Anyone seen or read about anything similar?
Thanks!
I made a post earlier about screen touch issues and this is one of mine as well. I can't reproduce it like you can but the right half of the screen just drops off to touch.
Have you seen the half (or third) of the screen go completely black? Seriously Wtf. I've only had it happen probably 4 times.... Comes back on immediately and worms as expected if I press the power button twice.

Sounds like you have the ATT model which was recalled for that very reason.

Picked it up from tmobile on Wed morning.
Also, those issues seem different from what I read.. Screen is *completely* black and they get stuck. Mine works fine 100% except when I wake up with the prior conditions (over night, phone is on clock daydream, dimmed and I am woke up with Sleep As Android alarm). It has only happened once in any other circumstance. Also, my phone updated to LRX21O upon first boot.
At this point I can't tell if it is software or hardware... Not sure how tmobile handles this as I bought directly from them (no insurance as of yet) or if I go straight to Motorola?
I just wish I could conclusively rule out a hardware issue.
I'm having a similar issue. It seems to definitely be intermittent though. Also, I've only experienced it when my phone is in landscape mode. It goes back to normal when I flip it to portrait mode.
Did you ever find anything else out about the issue OP?

Nothing other than what is in here. Still happens to me, though much less frequently. Hoping the 5.1 update rumored for Feb solves some of the quirks.
I honestly think this is a hardware issue of some sort. I had my original Nexus 6 for weeks and throughout heavy usage, I never had any issues. The first day I received a replacement device from Google, half of my screen would freeze/go black when in landscape watching videos, playing games, and sometimes even browsing the web. This was with 100% stock ROM and kernel without root (which rules out that being an issue). I tried reflashing the stock image and the issue still persists.
I contacted the GPS customer service last night and ordered another replacement device. This is issue is certainly specific to this phone, my first device was used heavily and this never happened even once.
I am convinced it is hardware as well.
I am experiencing the same issue with my phone and opened a ticket with Google yesterday and I want mine replaced. It's not just the Nexus 6 that's suffering from this as some Droid Turbo users are experiencing it as well.

Same thing here. Tmobile 64 GB nexus 6. Bought mine from T Mobile, but they don't have a replacement to send me, so I contacted Motorola, and they sent me a new one that arrives tomorrow. I hope the same thing doesn't happen with this one.

Look on the positive side of things, 50% less battery drain due to screen usage...
I still think this is, in my case, specifically software. Other people have reported different issues that are most likely hardware, don't think mine is. Also it has only happened two or three times in the past month, seems to with screen on and rotation occurring at the same time, though I can't confirm or repro reliably.
Well, just had my replacement processed over the phone. Only potential issue is that they said it may be a refurbished device. Anyone know how/if there is a way to tell??
I am not sure if this is somehow related-but my first Nexus 6 I got from t-mobile was working fine and on the second day of owning it the touch screen stopped working! I mean it won't register any touch whatsoever! The phone was just charging and I just used it like 30min ago....tried rebooting, resetting-nothing helped-went to a t-mobile store and replaced with a new one. The second one works...for now. The strange part is that they were no issues-it worked flawlessly and all of a sudden just stopped responding to touch.
I have never experienced issues like this with any smartphone in my life-I have owned android smartphones ever since the G1 was released...

Can you post a picture of where? I don't see any dates listed on the box.
On the bottom right just before SeQ#
But a better way to check is to boot into the bootloader/fastboot hit valume down until you see barcode then push power.
For me the date it shows is 1 day before the date on the box. The box says 2014-11-16 bootloader says 2014-11-15.

Hi everyone,
Long time lurker so first off thanks to everyone for all the useful assistance over quite a prolonged period.
I did a search before posting this, and whilst other screen issues have been raised in the past I could see no reference to this one. Basically in the last 48hrs my N7 has started to interpret touch screen input despite me not actually interfacing with the screen. It has got so bad in the last day I'm probably going to have to send it back as I assume its a hardware issue. I've had the N7 about 6 weeks.
Not sure if anyone else has seen such a thing and its actually software related? I'd rather fix it myself if possible rather than send it away. Even if not, I thought it would be useful to provide a record of the issue.
Edit - as a new user I can't post the YouTube link. My username is stenard1000 and the video title is "Nexus 7 screen issue - phantom input". I double checked and its easy enough to locate.
Ignore the Paradise Cove gameplay in the background. The issue mainly occurs in the top right corner. The only screen input by me in the video is the back button or pressing no in the middle of the screen. I've enabled the touch screen logging in the developer options to help track the phantom inputs more easily.
Also, for the record, turning the screen off and back on again does stop the issue temporarily, so its not a permanent hardware fault.
All you can do is a full wipe and format of everything, and flash back to completely stock. If that doesn't fix it then its a hardware issue and you're powerless,; time to send it back.
One thing that you could try first is popping the back off, and disconnecting the battery for ten minutes or so to give it a proper cold boot. That's the best advice i can give...

There's been a # of posts & discussions on this lately - hardware issues are being pointed at - as simple as a loosely assembled battery connector (that's lousy QC on the production line at the factory = poor QI) and/or hardware failure with the thin & delicate electronics.
At least we can mostly conclude that neither our own government's CIA/NSA and/or UK's MI5, etc. are tuning in to spy on our devices, or some hackers deep out in cyberspace has managed to remotely launch spyware on the N7 - I would hate to think what my friends behind the China's firewalled garden are handling these freaking incidents with the ghosty keypad inputting strokes on its own, LOL.
I had this issue straight out the box and after i flashed smoothrom also (i called them ghost strokes). After flashing CleanRom all that disappeared. Can't say for sure that CleanROM fixed it, buti haven't had that issue since then.

Hello, reader! If you are thinking that I made this story up: You are wrong. This is a very real and indeed VERY FRUSTRATING issue.
You can look it up on YouTube by typing "nexus 7 phantom touches". I am NOT here to post crap and lies. I am here to help. So please, if you are out of hope, tried EVERY SINGLE possible solution that was out there: RMA your device as soon as possible.
Hello, fellow Nexus 7 users!
Please read Edit #2 and Edit #4 after reading the story and a possible solution.
I was one of those who had a "phantom touch" problem on their Nexus 7 devices. Things like automatic typing and unresponsive screen are good examples.
I bought my Nexus 7 three weeks ago, and right off the bat it turned out that the screen has popped out from the left side of the screen. The screen was slightly lifted up over the bezel and creating a cracking sound when pressure was applied to it. I read about this problem on the Internet on how to fix it manually, but I didn't want to void the warranty, so I returned the device back to the shop for service. Two weeks passed, and I got my Nexus 7 back, with the screen fixed. That was the point where "phantom touches" started. Note: I updated my device from 4.1 Jelly Bean to 4.2 as soon as I bought the device and brought it home. I am a fairly new Android user, but I figured out things pretty fast. I am pretty sure it's a hardware failure, but magically somehow, reflashing to 4.1.2 eliminated the problem.
Now, how I fixed the problem (this may not be an ultimate solution, but it worked for me):
WARNING: Here you have to be very careful, because doing this might void your warranty AND if you royally screw up, you might have some problems. This is pretty easy, but just a note to everybody who will be attempting this.
You can also find in-depth tutorials elsewhere. I'm just telling here what I did.
1. I simply installed Asus Google Nexus 7 Toolkit v.4.0.0 to my computer and installed ADB and fastboot drivers. All these drivers can be installed via the Nexus 7 Toolkit, so no additional downloads are required.
2. Downloaded 4.1.2 Nexus 7 firmware. NOTE: Remember to choose 4.1.2, because the problems disappeared with the older firmware.
3. Unlocked BootLoader (this is the step which voids warranty, but can be easily masked up by locking BootLoader back to default.)
4. Flashed the firmware from 4.2.1 to 4.1.2
5. Locked BootLoader back.
6. Voila!
TLDR: The "phantom touches" caused on my device was Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean firmware's fault AFTER I serviced my Nexus 7. Read Edit #2 and #4
I hope I helped somebody who is just as frustrated as I was!
EDIT: You must enter fastboot mode in order to unlock and flash firmware. To enter fastboot mode: power on device while holding both volume buttons until Google logo disappears and fastboot mode turns on.
EDIT 2 (IMPORTANT): Confirmed that this is not a software issue. The reason for phantom typing is that my screen isn't properly aligned with the rest of the device (motherboard), so the screen is slightly bent, creating this particular problem. This can be TEMPORARILY fixed by removing the certain screws from the left side of the screen. The problems will eventually float up again.
EDIT 3: Finally found confidence to RMA my device. Asus agreed to replace the device, but instead they gave me my money back. Bought an iPad mini 16GB instead. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Android devices, but all this Nexus 7 mess got me all frustrated and I finally gave up. Asus customer support also told me that most of the early Nexus 7's are defect models with improperly aligned screens, causing this problem. And sadly, I had an early model.
EDIT 4 (IMPORTANT): Nexus 7 models starting with early serial numbers (Thanks to user Fotogravin for info) are possibly defect models. If there are no flaws, DO NOT RMA IT, but if there is, I suggest you RMA it as soon as possible.
Feel free to post on this thread. I'm actively following this thread to help out other people.

I immediately updated to 4.2.1 when I received my Nexus 7 two weeks ago. I only began to have the phantom touch issues when I put SmoothROM on my Nexus 7 two days ago. I'm currently in the process of restoring back to the stock ROM. I'll report back if I still have it.

I've been without the problem for at least 2 days now. Not entirely sure that the firmware downgrade helped, as I am pretty convinced that this is a hardware failure. We'll see.
I think it's hardware too. I've been getting the problem intermittently since I got the tablet and it was on 4.1 back then.
Tried returning it but it chose not to flake out while I was in store.

I've had this problem, but I've figured out that its not software at all.
Ive realised it actually seems to be from moisture. For example, if its a very humid day and my hands are a bit sticky, or say I've just got out of the shower or something, the small bits of ,moisture on the screen seem to confuse it, turn off the screen, wipe it with a dry cloth, and its fixed.

I was having the EXACT same problem as shown in the video with my N7. I have no clue how this disappeared with the reflash, as this is clearly a hardware problem. Been issue-free since wednesday.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Reflash fixed mine for about 2 days.. Saying that the issue is intermittent so possibly never fixed! I have just completed RMA form, Asus have advised its likely a hardware issue, a little frustrating as my previous device was a transformer prime which was plagued with hardware issues / design flaws. I thought being a nexus, I would be all good but nope , shouldn't moan.. However seems crazy that out of the dozens of android devices I have owned, the 2 I've had issues with have both been Asus. I know this isn't a major failure which makes going through the RMA process that little bit more annoying. I'm only doing it because I don't want the issue getting any worse.

This is nonsense. The model name of ALL nexus 7 models is ME-370T. To decide whether your tablet is an early model you need to look at the serial number, not at the model number which is the same for each and every nexus 7

Agreed. My model was one of the first and I never had any issues.
I think these phantom touches are crap. The screen is sensitive so if your finger gets to close then you have a touch.. That is different from a "phantom" touch.
I never had any issues with either of my nexus 7's..I had 2. If the screen is lifted that is something different and most likely a random production thing. I'm sure people will read this crap though about early models and go and rma if possible.
I know some had three lifting issue but I stunt think it is as big of a problem as it seems. I mean people are not generally posting if they don't have an issue.

It's actually a real issue, I've got it on video - recorded a few days ago - but it hasn't happened since removing the screen protector, which makes me think the display technology used (can't remember the name, uses less layers to minimise thickness) being too sensitive is the culprit. Drove me nuts though...

I'm not asking anyone to RMA their devices right away. I give people time to think, maybe figure out their own solution.
It's good that you are not having any problems with your Nexus 7. You should be happy and not saying that this issue is "fake". None of it is fake. Not a single bit. This is a real issue.

I've actually taken my Nexus 7 to a professional. He tried many different ROMs and Kernels but it to no avail. We tried to lower and raise the CPU clock to see if it would help: it didn't. In my case, it was a 100% hardware/mechanical failure. I didn't have any screen protectors or fancy cases for the device. It was just Luck of the Draw, that turned away from me.
Are you guys saying your fingers were no where near the screen and it was getting touches? Wow.. that is strange.
I know it is a very sensitive screen and if your fingers are very close it can sometimes trigger a touch but I don't think is what you guys mean because I dont think that is a phantom touch.
Why don't you just rma for this? It isn't normal.. I have had 2 nex 7 and have bout experienced these issues.

I just RMA'd my Asus Transformer TF700T for this problem. I got a notice yesterday that it has been repaired and shipped so I'll find out soon if it is truly fixed. I assume they replaced the digitizer.

My thread HERE dealing with people edge not working was a result of a bad accelerometer. Same issues: calendar and apps not rotating. I downloaded a clinometer app and would only see the accelerometer track about 14 degrees off center and then stop as I rotated the phone.
I returned the phone this morning for a new one and all's well. 64 GB Whites are starting to sell out though. I had to drive to a BB about 30 minutes away to get a replacement.

I did the same and found out mine is doing the same thing.
Yeah, I went to Verizon yesterday and they were going to replace it and they didn't have any 64GB white edges. No one within 150 miles does. I have fourteen days to get a new one either by waiting for it to come to the store. I called VZW and they can't do it over the phone and guarantee me a new phone.
So, I will wait for a new one.
Got my replacement and everything is good to go...
You can close this thread.
I'm having the rotation issue too. I've read other places that is a software issue. Gunna have to get a replacement tomorrow.
Well after doing the run arounds with Verizon they're finally sending me a new phone. I called the local stores and there's not a single one within 60 miles that has the white 64GB Edge in stock. I was very hesitant doing it over the phone, but they said they didn't have any certified like new devices yet so that I would most likely get a new device. I did tell them though that I would send it right back if it wasn't a brand new device. Its a shame there's not a simple fix for this issue.

I was in the same boat. No white 64GB edge within 200 miles. I went through the same thing on the phone with Verizon. I had to explain to the CSR on the phone that it is not a warranty claim nor an insurance claim. It is an exchange and there is absolutely no reason for not getting a brand new phone.... But they wanted me to send the phone to them first and then they would send me a brand new one after receiving the bad one. Good you are getting a new one. I actually went a got a black one from the store. I had, had enough of Verizon and just wanted a properly functioning phone.

Ya, if it's not new I'll just swap it out at the store for a regular S6. At this point I'm just hoping they keep their word and it's a new device. I'm not a very patient person and with as much time as I've already put in with Verizon, it's not worth it to keep swapping phones.
How's your replacement working so far?
Gave droid-life some info on the issue and they did a write up. Hopefully it'll get some more attention and we'll get a definite answer on the cause from Samsung soon.

Nice! If the same issue pops up on the new phone I'll definitely be doing that.
So far so good. I'm doing a fast charge to see if that makes it kick the bucket, then I'll add my apps again. If it goes bonkers in a few days, I'll move on to the S6. Anyways, what I wanted to post is some disappointing news (for me). It'll be hard to tell unless anyone else has this issue and can download the "Phone Info Samsung" app. My original phone that had the issue was made on 3-29-15 in China. The phone they replaced it with was also made on 3-29-15 in China. If its hardware related, surely I'm screwed.
Got my edge on launch day and was fine for one day, then wouldn't rotate. So, I replaced it. Agaij, for one day it was fine and then started to not rotate again. I wasn't going to replace it every time this happened, so I waited it out and as of yesterday, the rotation is working fine, like it just fixed itself.

I'm having the same problem. I honestly didn't even realize it until I started seeing people with the issue... Now it bothers the hell out of me. I'm going to try to get a new one from a store after work today.
Although I find it hard to believe it's a hardware issue when this many devices are seeing it. Working right out of the box and then all of a sudden it stops is pretty indicative of software in my eyes... At least that's what I'm hoping for.

If you dont mind, download the Phone Info Samsung app and share when and where your device was made. Seems like devices made in China are the majority of the ones with the issue.

I'm definitely starting to guess it has something to do with the phones made in China. What sucks is the replacement phone I just got was made on 3-29-15 in China too.
Thanks for sharing your info btw!

well the next question I have is... does anyone have a phone that WASN'T made in China? I haven't seen anyone mention it was made elsewhere.
OK, I've noticed a strange occurrence that happens on my phone, its like the screen shifts down. What's up with that? I've attached an image below showing you what I mean.

Phone is not rooted, running 5.1

Whatttt lol never seen that on any phone before
I know, it's weird, it's only ever happened 3 times, twice in the last 2 hours.

Wow. That's strange. Wonder if its a software issue vs a hardware issue. I've had my nexus 6 for a little over a month and haven't had that happen yet
I'm thinking it might be a software issue, I didn't notice this until I updated from 5.0.1 to 5.1

with that line down the middle it seems like it's a permutation of the screen tearing effect.

Known issue on the Nexus 6. Some devices the screen will "split" or tear down the middle and be unresponsive. I've had it happen. Your picture shows a definite line down the middle of your screen and I wonder if it is just another version of that issue.
line through screen
Hi guys
I too have the same issues with the Nexus 6. I notice it every time I watch netflix. Watching it horizontally, I will hat a horizantal line in middle and then sometimes even a vertical line. SO it looks like 4 window panes. I have to shut off phone to correct issue. Please let me know if you come up with a fix.
Thanks

Does the screen go black, or does it freeze. If it is the latter, most people say an RMA will resolve it.

It continues playing the movie with the black line. I have read this happens often w Netflix our this phone.
Happened to me too. I've read that for some people locking and then unlocking the screen solves it but I had to restart it to bring it back to normal. The screen stayed responsive though.
I can only assume that no fix for this has been found. I also have the issue, though turning off the screen and turning it back on fixes it until the next time it messes up.

My nexus 6 started having this problem from a few weeks ago. I think I saw the black-line-in-the-middle issue initially as well, but the prevalent issue for me right now is shifted or wrapped-around screen (need to figure out how to post a picture - this is my first post). The amount of shift sometimes varies (as much as half of the screen), and the video playback is not affected (phone works fine other than the screen shift), and screen is not frozen. I have had the phone for about 6 months (T-mobile) and it's not rooted and it has the latest android version (5.1.1 I think). Initially it showed up when playing netflix for a while (like 10 minutes), then it happened in youtube as well. It only happens when the screen is in landscape mode, and it does not happen every time. Turning off the screen then turning it back on does not make the problem go away. Only reboot can fix the issue, but the problem will come back after some play time.
I haven't seen any post talking about the same problem, let alone people talking about this kind of problem 6 months after using their phones (most screen problems reported are within a few days after the phone was received). Anyone has similar experience? I haven't talked to t-mobile yet but I will. The last android update on my phone was from a while ago so it shouldn't be related to that, but it could be related to netflix/youtube app updates but I don't remember when I updated last time. I am also using a phone cover with a lid which I expect would make heat dissipation situation worse but I started using that cover many months ago so I don't think it should be related either.
Not same issue I'm quite sure but I had a small think black like going across my screen, just appeared one day... This line didn't quite touch the edges of the screen but had an even gap on each side where it ended. I did a factory reset and no dice so I ended up taking it back to Sprint and after attempting to tighten a ribbon and they could not fix it they ordered me a new one and I see now that my og N6 was indeed defective as the speakers sounded completely different and on this new one speakers don't sound like crap.. Tk God for insurance.
On most roms I am to get the half screen problem, and I was wondering if there is something I can do to prevent it.
According to T-Mobile it is a know problem. Got my replacement on order. I had the problem happen before I even rooted the phone. Seems to have gotten worse over time for me though and that's why I called to have it replaced. If your having the problem I totally recommend the same to you. I will say after trying chroma I think it has gotten more frequent even after loading up my light rom backup. I can't blame it on anything other then bad hardware though cause like I said it happened before I rooted a week into having the phone.
Hardware issue, replace it

Yeah I had the issue before I rooted as well. Lol I had called tmobile for the replacement 5 min before reading this and they are sending me a replacement device. Thanks for responding though!
When to you guys called it in, do you get the normal "factory reset" troubleshooting, or do they know that this issue is random and just send a replacement? I get the issue with certain kernels, and not with others and am wondering if I should call it in.
