So I had a weird problem. After doing a reboot, my phone deleted all my pictures from my camera roll. I ran Disk Digger to recover deleted photos, but all it recovered were pictures the pictures I had sent via MMS. And only the camera roll pictures were deleted--pictures from other albums like screenshots and downloads are still there. But the ones I actually want are apparently gone without a trace.
Any ideas for me?

Sorry to say, but if you have already tried to run a file recovery program and it didn't retrieve them, they are likely gone forever.
I can't shed any light on how or why this happened, but I do know a good bit about file recovery. If somehow the partition index was damaged, the filesystem would "believe" that those files no longer exist, and if the RAW data still exists on the flash memory, it can get "over-written" very quickly. This is my best GUESS on what happened to you...
If you try flashing your exact same firmware again...without erasing userdata with fastboot.... Sometimes it fixes issues and they will magically reappear. Sometimes.

"icare data recovery" does -exactly- the same thing as "Disk Digger" - which the OP has already used. He already advised that it only recovered some MMS pictures...
Likely, the data has already been subsequently overwritten, which make the files permanently irretrievable.
Anyone is welcome to try, but if one has already tried with diskdigger and the files weren't retrieved, I can guarantee that icare can't recover them either.
But ty it.. icare data recovery software works for me

It's weird that virtually all of his pictures were instantly overwritten. I played with DiskDigger for fun a while ago and found pictures I had deleted months earlier.

Just make sure if you restore that you are on the same rom that you backed up.
Will do. Is there options rather than restoring? I cant seem to find a "recycle bin" of sorts for android but I am betting I can find some type of revovery program that if I dont make file changes should be able to recover them. Going to look at that but will take suggestions if anyone has a better idea or a program that will work. Freaking sucks, such a stupid and careless mistake.

I have looked for that and I do not see it. I deleted them from within the gallery app. The files were stored both on my external SD card and on the internal in the starndard DCIM directory. No .trash folder exists in the locations I have looked. Would you know a specific path?
My friend was doing the OTA to ICS, but the phone powered off midway through the update and is now softbricked.
How can I access the data on the internal SD card? There are pictures which HAVE to be removed. The phone was rooted, not sure if it has CWM.
Any help would be appreciated. I don't have the D4 on me right now, but I will get it on Saturday in it's half-bricked state, needing repair.
Try RSDLite to flash the fastboot files for ICS.

It didn't the one time I needed to do it.
As far as I can tell, if it's in /sdcard or /sdcard-ext, it would be safe. Downloads, photos, documents, and the like would be there.
Application specific stuff (like notes in a note-keeping application... Note Everything, I'm looking at you) may go. I hope you had that backed up. Frankly, I don't know any way to pull those out anyways. (Most of the ones I've seen in that class are MySQL databases in application-specific directories. If the app has an option to back those up to sdcard, I always use it; that way, it can be restored post-flash by the application.)
im on 4.4 stock, non rooted, i deleted some pictures in the gallery app by accident. is there anything i can do to get themh as back? all the apps such as disk digger are for rooted phones. i am extremely confused when it comes to rooting 4.4 and i know you have to revert back to 4.2.2 and im afraid that will overwrite that data. without usb mass storage mode, i cant do a scan on the computer. please help.

Chances are, they are probably gone forever. BUT, you could try these apps:
hxxps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bero.sdrescan
hxxps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.baloota.dumpster
I've seen reports of lost pictures coming back after a rescan. You could also check the .thumbnails folder to see if they are there, but they won't be the full-res photos from your camera folder. another spot to check is /sdcard/DCIM/Camera/cache. Do this on your computer or with a file browser on your phone such as Astro. Helium is a good app that doesn't require root to back up your stuff. I'd recommend using a backup program and set up an online storage solution using google+ or dropbox to automatically upload new photos you take.
A last resort, you could try using your PC to recover them as well using hxxp://www.recovering-deleted-files.net/android-data-recovery. I haven't used this myself and don't know if it's free or not, but there's a youtube video out there showing how it works. There's also another program called Recuva that you could try.
Best of luck. Let us know how it goes.

you must be looking at a wrong folder.
go to root folder of your device (where system, sys, etc, sdcard, data, storage and other system folders are) and check there.
edit:
actually, you aren't rooted, that's your problem. root, go to data/media/0/dcim. the photos should be there i think.

give it a try, but i doubt it will work. sorry :<
at least from now on, use the new way to backup. use a cloud backup app. for example for pictures i prefer myshoebox. u can do the same for contacts and everything. that way even if u go to another phone and log in to your cloud, you will always have your apps, your photos , your music , your contacts , everything.
If there is anything to save left ,then best chance is hexamob recovery on play store, but doubt it will find anything besides thumbnails.

Try using recuva sw, it helped me once, but i think files have to be deleted to work and not overwritten or formatted
But since i'm not sure you can give it a try, not much damage to be done
After the update last night, all my folders with data files (files I created, documents, shortcuts, etc.) are gone. My program files are OK. I have searched and cannot find a way to get them back. I believe I have backed them up somewhere like Google cloud or the Samsung option. But I can find no way to restore them. So, I am lost...

if you have backups made the check the settings menu or use the search to look for backup restore
Thanks for the replies. I think I know the problem. I found one of the back-ups on OneDrive. It restored all programs and settings. It did not restore data files. I believe that is because they were not backed up, my bad. I can't seem to find a back-up on Google, so I must not have done that. At least I didn't lose anything critical, just a lot of shortcuts and websites I bookmarked.

oh right, I understand you more clearly now. I don't think you can backup app data in such a way. the only method that can do this without root is by ADB which has to be done one app at a time. some apps can be backed up by copying there folders from /storage/emulated/0/Android/data or /Android/media but even then that might not be everything you need for a full backup.
any folders apps create outside of the Android folder can be copied to external memory and copied back later. I have to do this to guarantee that my messaging apps will have all the media I've previously downloaded.
I downloaded a program called GoodLock which saves the items on your home screen and supposedly back them up. I don't know if that just means the icons or it backs up the data. I hope I never have to find out
