BEWARE! The Overheating MOD complications!! - Nexus 4 General

Hey fellas ;
As you may or may not know from my previous thread , i cracked my screen and had to replace it.
I had a knock off assembly whose Touchscreen+lcd assembly dropped out of the frame , i flamed the seller and got my money back. I had a friend who works at LG , i bought the original assembly from him and installed it.
Along the way , i decided to get the shim i cut from a 9v battery's exterior and do the overheating mod to help cool things off.
A couple of days ago my digitizer popped out of the frame again (but with the original one) , i went to see my friend and we talked about it. When we opened the device he saw the shim and immediately knew what went wrong.
Apparently , quite a lot of people come to him with this problem (Nexus 4 being mostly a dev or modder device). When you do this overheating mod , the frame gets hotter and consequently , the adhesive that is between the frame and the lcd assembly. Heat weakens the adhesive and when there is enough pressure from one side to lift the other side , it comes out.
I sometimes use my slimport to take a look at the pictures that i've taken which heats up the device a lot and sometimes i play real racing , daily tasks such as browsing may not heat it to breakage but i'm not sure.
So , my friend told LG that the assembly was faulty and we replaced it , i removed the shim.
I've been using the device for 2 days or so , and it doesn't lift off.
So , the knockoff assembly wasn't so bad after all.
Hope i spared you another nightmare.
Edit : Here's the my other thread ;

BE WARY! of the devil of the knock off lcd assemblies!!!

Hey fellas ;
I just wanted you to know that i cracked my screen and half of my digitizer was not functional.
I used "wm size 768x800" on the terminal to be able to use the screen until i got my replacement lcd assembly. (Frame included.)
Yesterday i got it. I wish i hadn't.
I first realized that the screen is significantly more blue than the original. I thought maybe when i mount it it would go away (It was a long shot.)
I mounted it and it was ready to go , then i received a phone call and i couldn't end it because the screen wouldn't turn on. I immediately knew that there was something wrong with the proximity sensor. i plugged it out and tested it , it works fine but the problem is with the slot. It's significantly higher than it should be , causing a gap between the screen and the proximity sensor. Proximity sensor outputs it as an object in proximity and turns the screen off , never to turn on again unless the other side ends the call. I solved that with power button ends call feature.
Then i got a notification from facebook and i realized there is a circle around the notification led , that circle should have been covered with an optical filter which filters and focuses light. Without that filter you won't be able to get side colors such as purple because there are two sides to that LED which light up differently. One side lights up as blue , the other as red then these lights go through the filter at the same time , they are combined to give you purple.
I harvested my broken screen's filter and cut it so that it fits the circular spot in the frame. The actual shape is a rectangle because it is put between the frame and the digitizer.
So , i got it to a tolerable state then i went to get some cigs. I got a call , talked then when i slid the phone in my pocket , the digitizer fell off and ripped the flex cable.
Then i got home , flamed the seller so hard (politely) , he probably caught fire while reading it , so he accepted paid back my money , didn't even ask for a return shipping , he said to keep it.
I went ahead and bought the original one from a friend who works at LG , and all's well.
I mean not even a hiccup , it's great.
I'm opening this thread so you don't need to live through the same nightmare i did.
First thing to check is the digitizer's IC on the flex cable , it should be wrapped with aluminum foil , if it's not , it's a fake.
LG doesn'T sell the assembly without the frame so those that are without frame , they're fake.
There shouldn't be a circular spot around the notification LED , if there is , it's fake or without frame , still fake.
The screen should be pitch black on medium light , if it's bluer , it's a fake.
If the screen bulges out from the frame so much that it's annoying , it's a fake.
If the proximity sensor isn't working , it's probably a fake as well. It doesn't have anything to do with the purple filter , it does with the gap.
If the lcd does that weird thing when you tap on the screen , it's a fake. (That weird thing is , colors and pixels getting all mixed up like there is some kind of a liquid inside the monitor (there is). It happens because the glass is more flexible than it should be , thus it's not gorilla glass.
I mean i wouldn't mind a nice clone with just the blue of the screen , but this is intolerable.
It was 40 dollars on ebay , should have figured it was a fake from the price tag.
I hope i spared you a nightmare.
Edit : So , i still had the knockoff screen lying around , thought i would buy a broken nexus 4 for 100$. I got it , installed the screen , fixed the digitizer flex cable , everything was fine but out of the blue , the screen started appearing weird , there were lines on the screen and the resolution somehow dropped to like 640x480 , i can see the pixels clearly now , they got bigger. I don't know how or why. Anyways don't buy knockoffs because they're cheap. A week tops , then you'll need to get a new one. OEM FTW!
I have also been bit by knockoff screens for a few phones. The knockoffs just are not held to the same specs I guess. My latest was a new screen for my daughters G2. Cheap price and fast shipping, but as the phone heats up from use it gets ghosting and white lines......hard lesson learned I guess.

Back when the digitizers were separate from the lcds and gorilla glass wasn't so popular , i used to order knock off digitizers from ebay for me or my friends then i would fix their phones with that stuff , it always worked but i myself glued them to the frame. I had never tried knockoff LCDs because i knew better.
FFS , i live in Turkey and nobody and i mean nobody has ever heard of "3m". So i usually need to order it from U.S. , which takes about a month to get here and i was out of double-sided tape.
Genuine assemblies come from European countries or U.S. but almost never from China , which is a shame because nobody else offers free shipping. 10 $ for the glass + 30 $ for the shipping. That's just unfair.

Replacing broken screen/digitizer

Guys,
I broke my screen, the LCD is good but the digitizer doesn't work. Aparently, this phone works differently from olders phones in which you can replace only the digitizer, but not this one since are fused together.
My question are:
Where can I buy one that WILL work? (i bought one in ebay and was faulty)
Will any LG G2 screen fit the VS980 (D805, D802, etc)?
Any help will be appreciated.
thanks!

If you haven't already got one, you can get it at repairsuniverse - http://www.repairsuniverse.com/lg-g2-lcd-touch-screen-digitizer-replacement-black-verizon.html
The repair is a little delicate in that you have to completely disassemble the phone and pry the screen out. You don't need a proper heat gun, a hair dryer will work just fine. One problem to be aware of: the screen really needs to fit flush against things otherwise the proximity sensor (top left of screen) will think that something is near it all the time and will make the screen turn off and you'll struggle to get it on again. They supply you with double-sided tape and it sorta-kinda works if you're careful. Pro tip: don't do what I did and unseat the newly-installed screen without heating it - you'll damage the screen. Also, superglue seems to do bad things to the screen. I now have a fully functioning digitizer with a screen that looks like hell. YMMV.
I am also in the same boat, having dropped it this past weekend. LCD works, not digitizer.
Any thoughts on replacing just the digitizer/glass vs. getting the whole assembly with the LCD? Seems significantly more dificult, considering the heat gun/glue assembly and only about a $30 difference between the two methods based on ebay prices.

Any suggestions on getting this LCD vs. one from ebay that is also pre-attached to the frame and comes with tools? They seem identical otherwise.
Hi,
I have some experience since I replaced twice mine lol xD
There're no good quality screens (they are all copies, no OEM screens) and all 3 that I got from 3 differentes vendors suffers from yellowish spot on the lower left corner (its not my phone that has an issue, one screen actually was a phone that I bought on ebay and had the screen replaced and still suffered from that) and others from misalignment. Here's a pic that I had to send to an ebay seller to prove them that their screens were ****:
http://i62.tinypic.com/15mn1w1.jpg
And got the money back at least.
The digitizer and the lcd are fused, so if you try with digitizer/glass and screen apart, you'll have to buy optical glue in order to fuse them, if not you'll end up with two things glued together that looks awful.
If you go with the whole assembly, its luck to have one that works, so you'll have to be patient and asume that you may receive an awful screen. Luckly, ebay protect you, so if you're not in a hurry you can test until you grab the working one.
Any question if I can help, just le met know.

Great, cracked the screen of my Z3 Compact

This morning I was cleaning my phone (getting rid of the finger prints/smudges) while standing up when it slipped out of my hand and hit the tiled floor. Everything is fine except the screen (which is cracked). Screen works fine but is unresponsive no matter where I press or touch the screen. How much does a Z3 Compact replacement screen cost? I searched around and it seems it is about $100?
Screen replacement costs in Poland +/- 135$
(authorised sony service)
Yes' it's hard to get original one cheaper than 100-120$. You can search for some Chinese replacement cause sometimes it looks quite similar to original one but You must check it before buying. Last time I had a client with Z1c replacement screen which he bought for 40$ and there was no white color, everything what should be white was purple.
Voids warranty, cheap replacement
Got mine from here replacebase dot co dot uk (can not post links ), of course you void your warranty if you do it yourself.
Parts are good quality till now. I advice to order a back glass too, I broke mine when taking it out and had to reorder again (costs approx 6 pound).
Next time just heat up back glass with hair dryer and You wont break it.

Thanks for the input
The problem was a small crack which did not matter until you have to remove it, you can not pull on it when its cracked. Anyway I will use a hair dryer to put it back together (assemble, heat up, press with books).
Thanks for the replies.
I'll be getting the repair done from the official Sony shop/distributor I bought the phone from. Just wanted to get an idea of how much it "should" cost before I approach them.

Hello
I have tried to change my backglass 3 times but after a few hours the glass falls off... (Yes, I cleaned the phone removing all the old adhesive - and yes, I had pressure on it over night ) But all the instructions I have found on the internet never mentioned anything about putting the glass on, and HEATING it up, and the putting pressure on it... Where have you found that advice? You could imagine that heating up would ruin the adhesive/making it thinner and thereby not waterproof...? But on the other hand your succesrate probably beats mine...

I think it was a comment below the iFixit tutorial. But one big warning here, I did extra maximally stupid and put it to 'press' under my table (with books around it). The table was too heavy and cracked my front screen once again :crying:
+ The rear glass sits fixed and has not loosened.
- Don't put too much pressure or you destroy it yet again like stupid me

Doh!!! ? I have also read on Ifixit and can see there are different opinions about if it is nessesary to heat or not. But I think I will follow your advice and heat the new back before putting it under (less pressure) ?.
Another thing I read on Ifixit is that someone writes that you should put on an adhesive sticker - eventhough the new back comes with adhesive already on...? What is your advice on this?
Most pre-glued adhesive stickers on back are useless. Now everytime I change back in Xperia Z, Z1, Z2, Z3 and compacts I need to remove pre-glued sticker and change it to original one. Many times I had complaint on it from my clients saying that back glass came off. So it's better to order original back glass or just original adhesive.

Good
Mine came with the adhesive ON the screen, I used that one, I didn't have a separate one. Be extra careful when 'placing' the adhesive where it belongs because you can not remove it once place (okay maybe slightly). Its important that it fits on the first to first and a half try. More adhesive means thicker layer --> glass will stick out
Anyway, most of the stories you read online are partially BS, the phone will work even when the glass is a tiny bit loose or when the adhesive rotated and is a bit thicker in one place. In my eyes, when you dared to order, you are very much capable of assemble the parts.
In btw, ordered new glasses today, hope my two left hands fix it this time.
PS: A lesson I learned on a friends Galaxy S2, do NEVER EVER try to use force when something sticks or is not as loose as in a video. Google or ask another person maybe you just dont do the trick. A connector didnt want to come off so we used a lever to lift it, CLICK, the place where the lever levered broke the board... :silly:
Edit 1: I think its not necessary to HEAT it, it just has to be a lil bit warmer than in your pocket or when calculating heavily. 30s under a hairdryer will be more than enough i guess.
Forgot to update this thread. I received my fixed phone last week. They replaced the screen and even the "bumpers" around the phone for $98. They even delivered the phone to my home free of charge. Looks brand new, all the minor dings I had on the phone are gone.
On another note, I also bought my first iPhone. Got an Space Gray iPhone 6s 128 GB with the official/Apple leather case for the 6s. Got it last Thursday. Been playing around with it a lot and, overall, I love it. Deciding on whether to keep my Z3 Compact as a back-up phone or just sell it. But geez, does the iPhone 6s load games and other apps fast (thanks to its NVMe storage).

Did anyone swap the motherboard from another nexus 5x ?

Hi,
I love my nexus 5x it's the best for me i would'nt change my phone. But it has some minors issues :
- The back camera is dead, so is the glass that (was) protecting it.
- The screen is a little broken but it's still completely fonctional.
- The battery is very old
EDIT : I recently bought a spare nexus 5X that wont start anymore (i will get it in a few days).
DO people that already oppened one and try to change theese parts inside could help me ? Will i be able to get the used camera form another nexus 5X and put it inside mine ? I gess the back glass i can take the whole back cover of the other phone, and the batterry... i'll buy another one.
Finaly, the screen. To use the new screen, i'll have to do the reverse and swap MY motherboard into the (bootlooped) one. Will that be possible ? Can the bootloop comes from other parts than the motherboard? Otherwise i'll stick to my screen and just swap the back camera.
I've done it, and it's a 10 minutes job. You only have to swap the mainboard from your phone to the spare phone (wich seems to be ok but the mainboard).
It's very easy to disassembly the phone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NDYbEQNEPs
I did it in 20min finaly and it was very easy, no issue at all. Now i have a working screen and a nice back caméra , but thé front caméra is loose and blurry, i might have made a mistake while putting it in place.

My guess is to take a look at the wrong mainboard. There are some tiny rubber pieces that are fitted into the screen chassis, but sometimes got stucked in the mainboard components as you removed it like, for example, the rubber gasket of the proximity sensor. If you miss this last piece, the screen will remain unusable during calls. You have to be sure of removing all this pieces from the old board when swapping the mainboard.
I disassembled the phone once again to change the front camera and that was enough. Turns out the front camera of the (motherboard-fried) nexus 5x i bought was also ****ep up. Mine was OK, so now i have everything working.
The only thing that remains un-perfect is the battery. Is there somewhere a possibility to add a bigger battery to this phone ? Or, will at least a new one be a huge difference ?
IFIXIT - Nexus 5X
I swapped the motherboard on my 5x
I swapped the motherboard on mine. Friend of mine gave me his out-of-warranty 5x after we tried the heatup trick.... since the heatup trick didn't work.
Meanwhile, my 5x had bricked and I'd gotten a refurbished replacement from Google-FI. Well, I did not have a cover on it so the camera shied cracked (it sticks up a bit on the back)... I just kept using it like that for a while. I eventually swapped rear case covers and that was wonderful. I also swapped batteries since mine was quite swollen(even thought it always worked fine).
Then I somehow managed to crack the display (don't even know how)..... I kept using it like that for a couple of weeks and then decided to get a new phone (first) and then try the motherboard swap (in case I killed it).
Got my new Moto G6 at costco (Google-FI told me they weren't gonna restock theirs), and then planned my motherboard swap.
Looked on youtube and found the page that we had previously used to try the heatup trick for the nexus 5x. Followed it to swap the motherboard, the battery, and of course the good back case. I was pleasantly surprised when it started up like a dream!
I bought some UNICORN BEETLE cases for the 5X and G6 on Amazon - since I had points and other bucks I ended up getting them for like 10 bucks. (was about $37 otherwise methinks?).
Anyway - motherboard swap is easy, but as always be slow, patient, gentle, and just plod along with the Youtube video.

Exactly what happens if you don't remember these rubber inserts.

cracked screen. what can I do?

last year i recommended a colleague to buy this phone (mi a2 lite)
A few days ago, he told me that his son dropped him on the ground and broke the screen. he went to a shop and was asked for € 75.
later, he went to youtube and noticed that it's not that difficult to change it yourself. I searched the screen on the various e-commerce sites and found many. He would like me to help him buy a decent one so that he then undertakes to assemble it himself.
Do you have any to recommend? there are a lot of them and I wouldn't want to waste too much money. He said he needs the screen and any glue needed to attach it.
Many thanks in advance : Highfive:
(I translated everything with google translate to avoid too many grammatical errors ...)
I recommend watching the video in this link to disassemble. Also, Google for other A2 Lite tear-downs to get a good feeling for what you are going to do. As far as which screen to buy, I don't know which is the best but I bought this one. I am happy with it. The only other recommendation I have is to buy the screen AND the frame. It's only a couple more bucks for the frame. Then you just transfer the motherboard, etc... to the new frame/screen. No need to glue anything back and no need to worry about heating up the old screen to remove it.
A couple pointers:
* Be careful removing the fingerprint ribbon cable - it can rip easily (but a replacement can be purchased as well from China).
* Be careful removing the earpiece. I pried it up wrong and it split in half. I had to buy another from the UK which took about 3 weeks to arrive.
*When removing the tape that holds the battery in place, wind it slowly but firmly. If you go fast it will snap and then the battery will be hard to pry out.
Overall, I didn't think it was too difficult. I just had a problem with the earpiece & battery tape. Not bad considering I don't do this everyday.
Good luck!
Thanks a lot for the answer!
I watched the video and read the answers in that other thread too.
As soon as I catch my colleague, I will tell him all these things. I must also remind him that the phone has this middle name (redmi 6pro) so that he can get better information.
A little thing I didn't understand is that he told me he had seen a video showing how the screen was changed. And he told me how it has to be heated for a few seconds in order to detach it. Instead, in the video link in that other thread, it shows how to detach all the components until you get them all on the table. But, the only piece that had to "warm up" is the fingerprint reader.
Clearly, you suggested that I watch other videos on google and since this colleague of mine is not very well versed in the internet and the various ways to "retrieve information" I will have to help him both in recovering instructions and then ... ordering the necessary "pieces".
He told me that in addition to detaching the screen, after heating it ... there was only need to detach a cable or two that connects the screen to the motherboard and the game was done.
There is a thin thread that binds my future skill in recovering assembly and disassembly instructions ... the cost of the components and hoping that he has grasped the concept.
(I hope google translator has translated everything in a decent way xD )
If you follow my advice and replace the screen & frame, you won't need to heat anything to replace it. You just transfer the contents (motherboard, earpiece, etc...) from the cracked screen/frame to the new screen/frame.
The fingerprint reader attaches to the back cover and that gets replaced onto the new screen/frame...so it never has to be removed in the first place.
I found what I did was the best method for me. I tried replacing a screen on a Samsung Galaxy S4 years ago. Heating up the screen wasn't easy since I only had a blow dryer. I ultimately completely destroyed that phone trying to heat/pry the broken screen off, even though the video made it seem very easy. I didn't want a repeat of that so I choose to just transfer the components to the new screen/frame.
this is the video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNuRf7uOADc&t=437s
I finally found my colleague and told him about this other method.
I showed him (from my phone) the video posted in the other thread.
His response was:
"oh my god how do I put it all back together?
I would be confusing for sure. In the video that I have seen, just heat the front part and then I will only have to detach and reattach only 2 cables. "
he told me that he doesn't have that tool that looks like a hairdryer. But he would like to use a kind of hot metal counter that is used to pack the products in plastic. He would like to put the phone down a few seconds and then take off the screen.
I, if I had been in his place, I would have certainly opted to disassemble and reassemble everything. I do not trust very much to unstick and glue such delicate components.
But I've never tried either, so I have no idea how to make him understand that it's not as easy as it seems.
Assuming, that I have to buy him a screen that allows him to do as he says, which one should I buy? In the sense, I noticed for sale the famous screens with or without frames. But in your case, which one should I opt for?
I hate the fact that I have to take on this big responsibility of having to help and choose what to do.
however this forum is beautiful. As soon as I can I would like to follow him more to read the various topics ...
thank you for the advice not to heat the screen but to follow that method of detaching and reattaching the components but I may not be able to convince him ...
Reassembling the phone is no more difficult than disassembling it. In fact, it might even be easier.
Who is going to do the actual work? You or him? If it's him, let him do whatever he wants...his way. If it's you, then just get the screen & frame and swap components over.
The rest is up to you guys now. He asked you for help/advice. Tell him to let you help/give him advice or he's on his own.
