[Q] Phone not accepting Virgin UK sim.....or any other sim. - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I am in real need of some help here. I have a S3 Mini GT-I8190N. It is an unlocked 02 phone. I have a Virgin uk sim (rolling monthly contract). I simply do not understand why my S3 mini will not accept it. I've tried several custom roms. ( at this moment I'm using AOKP Golden KitKat) I've also tried various stock roms. Started by updating the original stock rom which came with the phone. No matter what I've tried my sim will not allow me to make/receive calls or texts. On one occasion it was allowing me on to the internet but still wouldnt let me make calls etc. The sim does work in other phones. I have tried a mates 3 uk sim and also an unused O2 payg in the S3 mini. Neither worked. I should also mention that the phone recognises the Virgin uk sims number and if I don't insert any sim it notifies me that sim is not present. I've been puzzling over this for a week and my head is battered. I should mention that whilst I am no genius, am I not an idiot. There must be something I'm overlooking. Unless of course the phone is just kapput. If anyone out there has had a similar problem with Virgin sim or can offer me any advice then please let me know. This is beginning to make my teeth itch!!! Cheers.

Sim Vs Usim on Kaiser

Hi Guys,
My Kaiser arriving tomoz to replace aging m3100 (Orange TTyN), but as I share a business contract and need the Kaiser, we have needed to switch Sims on our phones, hence I only have a none-3g sim for my kaiser.
Question is thus;
Do I need it to be a 3G sim to use HSPDA? I understand HSPDA is 3g 1.5 or something, but wanted to clarify the issue.
If no good, how can I get a 3g sim into the phone but retain the number? Orange don't want to play ball, as I have suggested they can 'upgrade' the Sim with new code etc.? ( yes, a little knowledge is a very dangerous thing.. )
Any help and advice would be much appreciated..
Cheers
I phoned orange they sent new 3G sim two days ago though mine was on PAYG.
My old sim only got GPRS.
The new sim has a number to phone to register it. Follow the prompts...The rep will ask you for the new sim card number and apply it to your phone.
After you put the new sim card in you'll get a text telling you to switch the phone off then on... then presto HSDPA
Make sure you specify that you want a 3G sim card else they'll try and send you a normal one
Yeah I dont follow at all...
Orange are anal about sim's with devices. You should register the new sim you get with your device and they will change it to your old number within a few hours.
I'm running a Kaiser on T-Mobile and I get HSPDA whenever its available. I don't have 3G service so I think you should get the max Data connection available when its available.
Thanks for tips Guys !
As I have found on other parts of these forums, plenty of great advice given quickly ! Cheers
Just to get this straight, as its a business phone and I cant screw it or lose my number...
Problem is, as I swapped phones with my Bro who I work with, there is already a phone using the number provided on the new sim... So I cant register the new sim.
Orange are ANAL about their sims, and ANAL about removing TouchFlo (Grrr) bunch of ANAL freaks if you ask me..
Anyhoo,
Could I register the sim, and give MY number, and they will register to that number? Orange Bod says there is NOTHING that can be done, NO WY to solve the situation, but you guys are so much smarter than them...
Keep it coming ! Is it poss. to re-code the sim to 3g using a simcard reader? should I find out where Head orange guy lives and shake him warmly by the throat?

[Q] Need Help: Using In Japan

Hello. I posted this yesterday in the Nexus S forum (I have an S, not a One) but no one seems to know the answer so I was wondering if perhaps someone here could help out, as the Nexus One has been out for some time now.
In a nutshell, I would like to know how in the world I can get my unlocked Nexus S to work in Japan with respect to data transmission.
Early this year I developed an interest in foreign smartphones as all we had here in Japan was the (IMHO) horrid Xperia X10 and the wonderful HTC Desire. I have purchased a number of phones from overseas (either Hong Kong or the UK) including:
HTC Mini (HK)
HTC Desire (HK)
Xperia X2 (UK)
Galaxy S (UK)
Galaxy Tab (UK)
Nexus S (USA)
Now here's the thing: ALL of these phones were unlocked yet NONE of them allowed any data transmission except the HTC Mini. To this day I fail to understand why.
When I got the HTC Mini, I was using the Mopera U APN/service. I put my Docomo SIM card into the Mini and without doing anything at all, it had data connectivity from the start. To this day I question if it was something related to Windows Mobile, as all of the other phones I listed above are Android (except for the X2).
I had Mopera U with all of these other phones and yet NONE of them work, even after I have tried multiple APN services and have manually typed in the APN settings (i.e. mpr2.bizho.net, spmode.ne.jp, mopera.flat.foma.ne.jp, etc).
Just yesterday I received my unlocked Nexus S from the USA and while it hardly came as a surprise, I am nonetheless infuriated once again that the phone refuses to connect to the wireless network.
It should be noted however that the very first time I attempted to connect the Nexus S to the mpr2.bizho.net APN, for a scant one second, the 3G data transmission icon appeared in the taskbar at the top of the screen, but then immediately disappeared. Since that initial setting, it has never reappeared when I toggle the APN.
Can anyone please offer some advice here? I fail to believe that there is absolutely no way to use this phone in Japan. With all the different network bands and whatnot supported by this phone, surely it has to work. I am still at a loss as to why the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab failed to connect to the network here when both are in fact, available for purchase domestically. Are the manufacturers actually creating modified band phones for each country despite making the same exact product?
Docomo is absolutely no help whatsoever, claiming that the ONLY band supported here is "3G" and denying any understanding of the other band spectrums (i.e. Quad Band GSM, Tri-Band HSPA, etc).
Some of the IT-related people I know have suggested that my phone is in fact, NOT unlocked and thus the problem stems from that, however considering that the phone will instantly register the NTT DOCOMO network and I can make calls and receive SMS messages, I fail to believe the phone is locked.
I will bring up a point that a friend passed onto me: They suggested that perhaps my problem is that the phone won't work because the previous carrier settings are still on it. The seller on eBay however stated that this was a factory unlocked phone and thus I don't think this applies, though I was a bit confused as to why there was a T-Mobile SIM card inside the Nexus S box, which led me to believe that perhaps the phone is unlocked but it is "defaulted" to T-Mobile network values?
Anyway if anyone could be of some assistance here I would greatly appreciate it.
You seem to know your stuff -- so I'm baffled as to why this isn't working for you.
You're armed with the Docomo APN and authentication, as well as compatible hardware. NTT Docomo (as well as SoftBank) operate 3G/UMTS/HSDPA on 2100Mhz, which your Nexus S supports.
Each year I visit family, I get a rental SIM, get the spiel that loaner SIMs aren't allowed to be used in smartphones (might have changed now). So they give me a phone instead, which I just rip the SIM out of and place in my phone.
I doubt your previous carriers' info would be interfering, since I'm guessing the only entry you have under operators is Docomo (and removed every other carrier), and you have your FOMA SIM inserted.
The only thing I can think of are: your HTC Mini's passing some authentication type handshake (or maybe it's a parameter or setting its' flipping), or the network has some strange blanket ban on IMEI numbers.
Both scenarios are pretty unlikely -- which brings me back to me being baffled. I was able to rip out a SIM and use in a Nokia E51 and an HP iPaq 910 (a handset not sold in Japan). I just entered in some APN settings and it was happy as pigs in ****.
I'm sorry I don't have anything more to offer -- but from what you said, and you are correct -- this should work.
This might sound obvious : Sometimes, Android will have a database built in with APN settings and will use those. Sometimes, It'll read the settings off of the SIM, and use those. Some cases, the auto-selected values might be incorrect if the carrier changed something on their end. Or sometimes, it might not do anything at all. You might have already tried this -- find a working handset (HTC Mini, friend, demo unit in a store, etc), write the settings down and enter them in by hand on your Nexus S. If you've already tried this, I apologize.

[Q] Why isn’t sim card being recognized?

Hey all, I’m having problems with my sim card not working, my Captivate doesn’t recognize it at all. I got this captivate to hold on to from my older brother who is currently serving overseas (not possible for him to use phone) a few months ago. When I got it, I rooted it, sim unlocked it (I have t-mobile), and got to flash roms and have fun with it thanks to you good folks on these forums.
About 2 weeks ago, the speaker was issues that really bothered me(had to keep tapping it in to get It to work) so I decided to send it over to Samsung to fix. The phone was still under warranty, so it cost nothing to fix fortunately. I just got it back yesterday, and since then my t-mobile sim card would not work. I rooted, sim unlocked, and flashed many different roms and still not working. Its as if the phone thinks there is no sim card at all (“No SIM Card Emergency Calls Only”). I also tried this app called Samservmode, and enabled all bands (GSM/WCDMA) to see if it would work; it didn’t.
I was ready to call Samsung again, but when I went over to my friend’s house and tried his att sim card; it worked perfectly and I was able to send texts and make calls. So something must be wrong with my sim card, it works perfectly on my g1 though (my backup phone that was used while Captivate was away). I was able to use the same t-mobile sim for a few months in a row before I sent it to Samsung, isn’t this possible for me to do it again? Any advice on doing so would be much appreciated; thanks.
P.S. My t-mobile sim card is prepaid if that matters, so I don’t use 3g or edge or any data networks.
Also my current setup (if it even helps, I've been flashing between froyo and ginger nonstop trying to fix this issue)
Firmware: 2.2
Baseband: I897UCKB1
Kernel: 2.6.32.9
Phone number and network is unknown
Mobile network type: HSDPA
Service state: Out of service
Roaming: Not roaming
Mobile network state: Disconnected
Everything else works pretty fine on this phone (wifi, bluetooth, etc.)
UPDATE: I went back to my friend's place and with his att sim card in, I tried adding a t-mobile APN based on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744535
Unfortunately this did not resolve the issue. I did this with his att sim card because when there is no sim (or in my case, my tmobile sim) in the phone, you can't access mobile networks in settings.
I am also currently on stock I897UCKH3
UPDATE 2: So I just tried my other friends t-mobile sim card (that is on a plan) and the captivate had service; was able to make calls and text. My prepaid sim card seems to be the culprit here. I don't understand because as I tested my friends sim card on the captivate, I also put my sim card in his iphone 3gs (unlocked) and it worked fine there. Is the captivate on strike against my sim card or something? I'm going to try calling t-mobile tomorrow (doubt they'll help since the captivate isn't their phone) and see if anything can be done. In the meantime if you guys have any advice, I'm all ears.
UPDATE 3 (This is getting kind of annoying): I just got off the phone with both Samsung and T-mobile and both of them don't know what to think. I'm beginning to think this is a special case and this problem only occurred to a very few amount of people. If anyone can help with suggestions I would be very grateful. I'm thinking about going to a t-mobile store today to see what they think, maybe seeing the issue in person would help in their perspective.
Doubt anyone is going to answer or even post, but here goes:
BUMP
I also went back to stock and followed this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881162
with no success.
You try getting a new sim card?
Sent from my I897 using xda premium
Does T-Mobile have any policy of replacing prepaid sim cards? If so, that sounds like your best option. Also, Samsung might have been angry at you cheating their system, and purposefully disabled your sim card. Make sure you take out your sim before sending it back for repair.
Thanks for the reply guys, much appreciated. I decided to just live with it and keep the captivate as a galaxy s wifi if you will for media purposes only like an ipod touch. My g1 will be a phone. Once the nexus prime comes out I will start up a contract and finally experience 4g speeds and w/e else I can get with a contract thats not available on prepaid.
Also I did not send Samsung the phone with the sim card in, idk how they must've known to block it. Thanks again.

Unlock issue with UK i9305 - won't work with Three (3) network sim!

I'll try and keep this breif but getting pretty frustrated with this...
I bought this handset sim free from T-Mobile UK. It was brand new and sealed. When inserting my Three(3) sim it would say "invalid sim" - which was expected as it was locked to T-Mobile. I paid a third party UK company called mobileunlocked.co.uk who have a very good reputation and lots of good reviews for an unlock code so I could use it with a Three (3) UK 3G Sim card. I received the unlock code and an un-freeze code and used both several times, resulting in "unsuccessful". Thinking it was a bad code, I paid ANOTHER unlocking company off ebay (again, reputable) and was supplied with the same codes and the same results but a slightly different method which involved entering * and # keys before the codes in the code box. This resulted in a popup saying "Network control code is blocked".
Following this, I tried the *#197328640# method to access the hidden menus as detailed in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2014982 (this has been proven to work with Note II, Galaxy SIII and Galaxy SIII LTE).
I followed that guide to the letter and restarted the phone. At first, I had hope as there was no sim lock code entry box, however I waited and waited and waited and the phone did not pick up my Three (3) signal, despite it no longer saying "invalid sim".
Basically, it just shows several bars but does not pick a Three(3) signal or any date. I have tried manually selecting the network and manually entering APN settings, but I get the same result. When I try connecting manually it just says "Cannot register on network".
-I have tried using this sim card in other phones, it works OK!
-I have tried using other network sim cards (Orange, T-Mobile, EE, Vodafone) and they all work.
-I have tried using a different Three(3) sim in this phone and it still doesn't work.
I can't return it to the T-Mobile store as the warranty is invalid as I have unlocked it (or so I think!). Can anyone help? I know three(3) sims are compatible with this phone as others on this forum have stated they are using Three (3) sims in unlocked i9305s.
Any idea why my unlocking codes that were valid wouldn't work and why it said "Network control code is blocked"?
Any idea why my Three(3) micro sims won't work but other networks do despite this phone being compatible with three (3) sims?
Help!
It doesn't appear that 3 UK has any publicly available LTE network at this time, but that they are rolling one out. Perhaps it is physically available and being picked up by your phone, except 3 isn't allowing just any sim card to register on that network at this time? Try disabling LTE and attempting to connect again.

I know I won't be able to get LTE as Three (3) aren't offering LTE until Q3. I am perfectly happy just using 3G. I have tried disabling LTE and using 3G only and the same things happen.
I have tried 2 different Three (3) micro sims in it and it still won't register on the network. I know Three(3) sims work in the i9305 as others have unlocked their's and used Three (3) sims.
It's either something wrong with the unlock, something wrong with the hardware or something isn't enabled/disabled. Like I said I've tried automatically connecting and manually entering APNs and still NOTHING.
Frustrating having spent over £450 on a brand new handset which I can't return as warranty is invalidated through "unlocking" (which hasn't unlocked it fully!)

Shouldn't be a problem to be honest. Have you tried calling three to say that you're using the i9305? I love three and their unlimited data plans I plan to do this once samsung/EE unlock my phone.

Hi,
I am in the same boat, I actually got the S3 LTE from EE in December (GOT IT FOR 359).. Initially, it worked with three after unlocking via xda..*#197328640# method ..But it stopped working or it was working intermittently...
So tried rining three..they said..ohhh our network is best and our (three) sims will work only in three mobiles..
Anyway I tried all other methods..re-set..factory etc..
Finally sent the mobile to Samsung...
after 10days, I got it back...Now as soon as I insert three sim..it says invalid sim..So tried *#197328640# method again..unfortunately..i can't do that as (the last option INITIALIZE...) does not show up now..
Anyway managed to get unlock code from ebay...NO USE..it shows the same problem as yours.."network control is blocked"...
Donno what to do??? might ring samsung again tomorrow...
Have you tried speaking to T mobile about getting it unlocked????
If you find any answers..pls let me know
Thanks in advance
I'm having the same problem. Any updated on how things went with T-mobile or does anyone have a fix?
Should I cancel my order?!
I just bought the S3 LTE i9305. I purchased it as an upgrade and its arriving tomorrow. I wanted to give my sim to my mother and keep the phone to use with Three's DC-HSPA+ which will work on the S3 LTE. So can I unlock it or will it be facing the same problems as mentioned in the thread. Sorry for not helping out, ama noob and GOOD LUCK! :good:
I recently put in an unlocking request at EE. They get a samsung unlocking code directly from Samsung. So I'll give this method a go. I am getting my Sim Card in soon from three. Decided to jump the boat on to the one plan @ £25 a month. =) EE's london signal is pants. =(

I tried to get an unlock code from T-mobile, they said that Samsung wouldn't release it for another six months, since it's a new phone. Even though we've been with them for donkeys years!
Right today, I recieved my sim. I'm glad to say everything works. I'm getting around 8mbps down and 1mbps up in West London.
If yours doesnt work then it probably is a damaged sim.
Tell T-Mobile you want to speak to someone that knows what they are talking about. It takes up to 60 days for direct Samsung unlock code. You might have to pay a tenner but worth it jn my perspective. I'm glad I have unlimited data again. It feels like freedom. No Joke. o2 Used to do an unlimited tariff and I loved it. There reasoning was to improve their network but instead it made it worse. I know Three arent known for their calls but they certainly know what customers want and thats data.
PS how do I know if im getting the optimum speed?

Try this

I think you have updated the software via OTA.. you need to downgrade to I9305XXALI5_I9305EVRALI5_I9305BVALI5 (this is for people who have got phone from T-mobile). Download from Sammobile.com, flash via odin (this wont affect ur warranty as this is stock firmware and doesnt increase the binary counter).
once you are sure that you have the above software, then follow the instructions on the below in first post in the mentioned link, again no rooting involved:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2014982
People have confirmed that after unlocking via this method if you go ahead with OTA, you will still have the phone unlocked.
I have followed the above procedure but havent updated the firware and have not used the phone yet. But its unlocked and I have tried using Three UK sim, it works,
Do let me know how it goes.

On the site, it says it's for EE, is that still ok? I know T-mobile, Orange and EE, are all pretty much the same thing now, but I just want to be sure. I wouldn't want to put something that starts putting EE logos all over on boot up etc. The one that came with the phone doesn't mention anything about T-mobile on boot up.
It won't EE is unbranded
Thanks... I've zapped it with 4.1.1, used that trick, and then allowed the 4.1.2 update + plus another update of some sort through OTA, and I'm now using O2 happily! Cheers!
Phone arrived Friday on Orange EE with 4.1.2. wouldn't accept 3uk sim.
Tried the *#...640# trick but menu options not present.
Reverted firmware down to 4.1.1. Li5 Uk EE and voila menus present.
Tried 3uk sim and works fine.
Flashed latest Wanamlite rom and still unlocked on 3uk.
Getting a reliable 15.5 Mbs down on dc HSDPA at home despite only having 1 bar signal, on three One plan unlimited for £15/mth.

Great news!

[Q] HTC ONE UK EE to UK/EU Model

All,
I've been out of the Android loop for some time, I bought a HTC One M7 from T-Mobile UK (EE), it's a non contract/non payg model just the handset, I decided to switch providers and unlocked the phone with no issues.
However T-Mobile have modified the device somehow and locked the APN/MMS settings, I have put new ones in but it defaults to the T-Mobile (EE) settings, as I am using a Virgin sim card it sort of half works as it's on the same network. But I do not get MMS etc.
Also when I dial my voicemail it will no longer allow me to make calls until I remove the sim or reboot the phone which is annoying!
What I would really like to do is turn it in to a non carrier UK/EU device and get OTA updates from HTC.
I have looked and looked at information, but my head is fried, can anyone help me with this, OTA updates are important, I do not want any modified ROMS and I want to revert it to normal if I need to send it in for a repair.
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.
