How bad is the main camera on the ZR - Sony Xperia ZR

Because of a combination of features (removable battery, fm radio, sd slot, etc), I was considering getting a c5502 or c5503 ZR to use with T-Mobile, but have read some very bad reviews of the main camera. Having a hard time deciphering the mixed opinions, and also wondering whether any software updates, firmwares, ROMs, or apps make the camera better. Sorry for the broad and uninformed question, but not sure how to really gather up this information. Thanks.

XZR is my fourth Sony device. The camera is excellent. XZ, XZR and XZL have same camera of 13.1 MP.
previously I had xperia SP and it had worst camera as per sony standard.
If you want best camera phone then go for Nokia Lumia or Lenovo.

Thanks. Curious why I read so many reviews of the ZR panning the camera (main, not front-facing). I'd assume Sonys would have good cameras. Surprised to hear Lenovos might be a good choice.

IS the i9100 Galaxy S2 camera better than the Xperia ZR?

ZR is my dream phone well the Z is but due to so many hardware issuses and bad design I want to go with the ZR
But can the camera match my previous i9100 S2?
My S2 was incredible at taking photos especially at night. No noise at all.
The Samsung used SONY camera module till S3 Galaxy. The ZR takes incredible pictures once you do the settings right and for critical pictures use HDR Cam+ or other utilities like I do.
ZR gets better photo than GNexus. The camera sound effects can't mute by sound settings, I can't take photo of my sleeping kid with this. It's good camera among phones.

I keep reading on review websites that the Z and ZR camera is horrible its really really bad
But some people are saying thats cause those guys are morons and don't enable HDR
can anyone confirm how the Z and ZR camera matches other phone cameras?

wow thanks holy crap
the S2 i9100 is significantly better sharper and less noise than the Z and ZR
the Z does look better than the ZR
how the heck a old phone like the i9100 S2 can have such a better camera? how is that even possible?
it's sony's post-processing and crap compression that screws up a great camera... it's the software :/
so can this be fixed using HDR?
what about rooting and flashing custom rom etc?

i believe it'll be fixed by next software updates.. as most of the reviews about the Xperia ZR camera was made on the 4.1 ROM ,and we have some positive feedbacks about camera quality and focus-speed enhancement in the new 4.2.2 update
so we need someone who is using the 4.2.2 ROM to confirm it..

4.2.2 user here.I can tell that the camera is way better, and for the lowlight shoting please turn off the SAM - superior auto mod. and try playing with the settings abit like stopping HDR / chosing Fill flash / focus - multi auto focus. It really gives a very good low light pictures. So basicly the camera is great for me here

and guys don't listen to just one review specially the one from Phonearena.. it's the worst review ever for the ZR and you may see the positive comments there for the users..
you can just only check the photos quality from Here ,but don't read the the whole page you'll hate the phone
the photo's aren't that perfect.. but they're still great for me (note that these photos were taken on the 4.1.2 FW)

Xperia Z1 Camera is Terrible

Hi everyone,hi to all my friends.
I want to ask very important question.Z1's camera is very bad I think. I am waiting for a better camera. My old phone Xperia Arc is better than Z1.Is this a software problem? Is there anyone who thinking like me? Or Are there some special settings for camera?

yeah number of people are complaining for camera... actually hardware specs are good enough for a mobile but sony's software is a complete mess... all you can do is wait and try to upgrade it to latest version...

Hello,
I am also very unhappy with the camera.
Today I updated my firmware from 534 to 257 and I cannot see any differences in the pictures.
But this is only my view, maybe there are improvements which I do not see.
What is the problem? I have to admit I am quite happy with the camera.

Guys these are two shots I took with the new firmware... not too bad I guess
This is @1000 iso... noise level is pretty good and white balance is better than earlier
This is in daylight with plenty of details
I think camera-quality is just where you can realistically expect it.
About on par or better than cheap compacts with same sensor-size, but as you can expect it can´t compete with high-end compacts like Canon G-Series, Panasonic LX, Olympus XZ or similar (I don´t want to mention Sony RX100(II) of course which is far ahead).
On the positive side is relatively low NR of luminance-noise which leaves most fine detail intact, virtually no ugly chroma-noise without the colors being washed out up to the highest sensitivities and quite low contrast which leads to quite good DR for a phone-camera (and of course also doesn´t hide the noise by clipping to black like many other phones)
Negative is mostly the camera-app, unfortunately most other phones aren´t better here as well:
The so called "Manual" mode is a joke, on a real camera this would qualify as P-Mode as most, but certainly not M.
Why are the even give you the chance to adjust ISO while not telling you the shutter-speed the camera will use is beyond me. It is not useful to set ISO yourself when you don´t know which shutter-speed you well get. Of course a real shutter-priority-mode would be much better, but I guess that´s to much to ask.
Superior-Auto is too limiting. I know this mode is meant for point&shoot, but I think the possibility to choose the AR you like wouldn´t be to overwhelming for beginners. And of course that you can only start superior-auto from the lockscreen or with the camera-button also is very stupid.
Besides the scene-recognition of superior-auto is also a bit hit&miss.
Also sharpening can be somewhat high, which emphasizes noise and can destroy fine detail.

[Q] From Xperia S to Xperia T: is it worth it?

Hi guys, I'll go straight to the point: I was thinking of exchanging my Xperia S for an Xperia T, paying about 30€. I have some questions for you owners, hoping you'll take a couple of minutes to answer me
T is more powerful, no doubt about that (actually I do have a doubt: does it have dual channel RAM like Xperia V or is it the same RAM as Xperia S? ). What I'm particularly interested in is:
- Camera -> Better? Worse? Same? Apart from those 13 MegaPixels, Sony sensors are always quite good, the problem is how Sony optimizes the software part (sometimes awfully, unfortunately). So... would I regret switching from S to T?
- Battery -> Neither T nor S have great battery life, this is actually well known. But how's battery life of Xperia T comparing to the one of Xperia S? I'm actually satisfied (enough) with my S... would I regret buying this T?
- Bugs & Problems -> Is there any terrible bug that I should be aware of? And in that case would I be able to solve it with a little modding?
- Last question: would you recommend me to change my S with a T for just 30€, or do you find it useless?
Thank you for your attention, hope to read you soon
I've got the T, my brother has the S, so I#ve had the chance to use both (at least a bit)

About even. 1MP more doesn't matter (you won't notice such a small increase in pixels. A camera needs to have at least 25% more pxels to show a visible increse) - and since most of us don't print and most screens still show only 2MP the pixel increase is irrelevant.

Also: about even. You can get through a day with both with restricted usage, but heavy usage will drain both fast

Not really a bug but an annoyance: the home/back buttons are softbuttons that take up screen real estate unlike the S, which has those buttons as sperate touch areas

I wouldn't upgrade. Maybe, if I knew I could sell the S for more than 30€ but otherwise: no. Not worth it
Camera MP count

I agree a 1 MP increase is irrelevant. Unless the increase goes in hand with a bigger pixel size, which usually means a bigger sensor. Even the opposite is true. Higher pixel count means higher pixel density which mean higher digital noise which means more software noise suppression which means more loss of detail!
The really relevant data would be the sensor size, and secondly pixel density. The same sensor size with 5 MP count would potentially deliver a far better quality, especially in low light conditions.
The useless counting of MP is the prove of marketing powers. Even when using the build in digital zoom, anything more than 10 MP in a hand phone or compact camera is looking good on the package description, but delivers no value to the consumer. Professionals seldom need more than 20 MP. They have much better sensors in their cameras, which are multiple the size of the toy sensor which is in a phone. The right feature in the Xperia would be a switch to connect two or three pixels to one unit, that would be a real improvement.
To the phone, wait for the next good offer. The differences are not earth shaking.

Yeah the biggest reason I could see to upgrade is the increased screen size it's a lot nicer to use then a 4.3 and maybe the build of the LT30A is one is one of the things that made me fall in love with this phone when I was buying it but other then that and maybe the small apps I can't see a reason to upgrade just wait till something better comes out.
Thanks for your replies. I actually specified that I know those "13 MegaPixel" means nothing: that's why I was asing users about the camera quality, because I can't just rely on that number
Apart from that, I'm just willing to change because the Xperia T design is one of my favourite ones, plus it will still receive support from Sony. I'll probably go through a serious change in march/april 2014, but for now I'm just a bit tired of the S (though I'm quite satisfied with it).
Thank you anyway for your opinions, hope to read more from you

Actually 2 words : "Under investigations"
From a development point of view it would make much more sense to take the T over the S. The T is getting an official 4.3 update (maybe even 4.4) and the S isn't. Developers are currently doing fantastic things with the T from solid stock ROMs like Hybrid and Miui to super fast and smooth 4.4 ROMs such as OmniRom. They are doing so much on old kernels and software. Imagine what they'll be able to do once the T gets 4.3 or 4.4.

[Q] Is ZR camera better than SP in terms of quality?

Hi folks!
I bought SP couple of days ago and have upgraded to 4.3. I have been previously using Xperia Ray which has 8MP camera. After shooting different photos in different light conditions (low light, outside, inside), it seems that SP shoots mediocre photos. I have tried SP's superior auto mode as well as manual mode with different ISO settings, nothing seems to help the image quality.
Here is the link to public dropbox folder containing few SP pictures - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/zar4xykqq4p3k1h/AADY4dfkscywQNFz7WJPHeb2a?dl=0
Camera quality is the only let down of SP, everything else is great. But, I am not willing to sacrifice on photos quality. I was wondering if ZR is any better in that department? Can it shoot better photos than SP?
From GSMArena image quality compare tool, it seems that SP camera is better - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/zar4xykqq4p3k1h/AADY4dfkscywQNFz7WJPHeb2a?dl=0
What is your experience with ZR? Do you like it's camera?
yes absolutely. XZR camera is way better than XSP. I had XSP before. but now I switched to XZR as XSP wont go beyond 4.3 update.

Yup your argument is based on what Sony or other device testing webpage told us. Don't think me wrong it is completely natural to believe and valid to affirm. However, I had these two phones in the past, and based on my observation (not even formally tested LOL), XSP did PAR with XZR in terms of camera department. I got so frustrated that......I.......(dumped my phone, you say?:laugh......switched to a Z2.:good::good:

Reclaim of the camera

Hello dear xda users,
as we know, our xperia Z doesn´t have the best camera. I have it for several months. In my case, it makes worse pictures then mid-range devices I used before it, especially in the indoor daylight conditions. I noticed there are some tips to make it better in manual mode, but still it isn´t a win.
So what do you think, could it be reclaimable? Do you have some experience with it?
Thanks for your opinions.

Some softwares can help you produce better results. However they would not by nay means increase your camera pixels or anything but only help you focus better with better exposure and produce better colours
Like for example if you snap documents from your phone camera, camscanner can do wonders.
There are other applications for taking pictures as well on playstore.
Quote me if you have any other question

I tried some other camera apps but photos still have ISO set too high what makes big noise at them.
I found some cyber-shot app/xposed module. Does it worth for try, could it make better photos?

If you think your camera is faulty, only then Sony can help you with your warranty. However you can visit a Sony care and discuss your problem with them. They might be able to help.
