Access to /system folder on 4.4.4 - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a rooted Xperia Z1 running 4.4.4, is there any way for me to please get write access to folder /system without unlocking the bootloader?

Rooting is enough to access to the System folder
No need to unlock the Bootloader

You don't need to unlock the bootloader to have write access to system folder. Install SuperSU from Play Store and use root explorer of your choice.
By the way. Wrong thread to ask questions.

I have SuperSU and I’ve tried lots of different file managers with root support (like ES file manager or Root Explorer), but when selecting RW on / or /system nothing happens. And when checking again it always says RO instead of RW. Its like something still is blocking RW access to those folders.
Maybe this mean bootloader must be unlocked and a custom ROM is needed to access /system after 4.4.4?
(Sorry about posting in wrong thread, please feel free to move it).

I have 4.4.4 installed on locked bootloader and have no issues with RW access to system folder. You might want to try re-rooting with rootkitXperia tool.

Try this link https://seo-michael.co.uk/enable-root-browsing-on-es-file-explorer/ and make sure you have rooted your phone properly.

You have not killed the ric.
Google for to do it.

In that thread you say to check if a certain file in sys/kernel/security/Sony_ric but this folder is empty in my phone. (And the option to show hidden files is enabled in ES file manager as well).

Create the file and put a 0 in it, save it, reboot and check again
Or just flak the package I linked and check again

First you need to root your phone. As the term implies it gives you root access.
Then use an app like root explorer to get into root directories, mount them as rw, then do as you will.

Hello,
for me sounds like you need root access to your system to see this folders and a file explorer with root too like root explorer....but is not for free. I already didn´t found a free option.
Is only a idea...I didn´t try self
Edit: I was too slow :-D

My phone is rooted with Darky's 9.5. I would know how to do this in linux, mounting...chmod for permissions, something like that...are you saying an app like root explorer lets me access /etc, /mnt, and so on? Are there free alternatives?
If you want you can try this both....but the feedback is very mixed..some like some hate

[Q] Edit system file without root

does anyone can tell me how to edit android system file without root?
Sorry for my bad english
Not possible i guess. Only root users will get access to System partition. If not rooted, you'll only able to access the SD-card folder only.
If there is any exceptions, correct me if I'm wrong.

Go ahead and root your device

It's impossible.

Yes, it's impossible, you have to root......may I suggest you this: Universal Gingerbread Root & Unroot 2.3.3 -> 2.3.7+ ?
actually it is possible with abd it is like a temp root
what you need is a stock kernel in which ro.debuggable is set to 1 and you can use adb root command to push and pull files to system dont know about deleting
but still it is far better to root the device.

yes thats right, we need to mount system to r/w and thats need root, if not then we'll just in r/o state and we can only see and do nothing about it
I think it's possible
I have the same problem. I want to change the system sounds.
Today I was looking in my files with astro file manager. I noticed a little phone icon in the path. I tapped it and i got in the system partition.
P.S I have a galaxy nexus. It has no sd card. I don't know if it works with other phones.
I'd use adb, as dheerai said. I think u mean with 'root' that u flash sth with loosing warranty. But using adb doesnt void warranty, i think, cause if it would, no single developer using adb (and they do use it!) would loose his phones warranty and this might not be googles intention.

what if the phone don't have root....?
If you just want to view them then just flash TWRP flashing doesn't require root and you can view them and if you want to edit them then sorry there's no way to edit them without rooting
Can you please elaborate the process about how to edit the system files through adb commands?

[Q] need help with r/w permissions

Hello
I recently picked up a HD Fire which is on the newest update 7.2.1 and rooted it with the "Qemu automated root" method, which it said was successful. I see the SU app, thing is "ES file explorer" wont let me turn on root explorer and another app "root explorer" wont let me change system permissions to R/W to move apps around.. I am stuck, and I am assuming that I am not rooted if I cant change permissions?
Thanks..

Glad you got it working....In My experience (which isnt great) Id Just sack ES Explorer and use Root Explorer....Its quite simple in there. There is a button at the top that is for read only or read write.....It says Mount R/W to get read write or when your in RW it says Mount R/O for read Only. Im a massive fan of Root Explorer ....And no I dont have anything to do with it......Its the best Stat! for less than £4 I also have their SQL database editor....Which actually lets you edit stuff...Unlike some Ive had to get refunds for!

It seems to me that you have problem either of your root or correct permission of bootanimation you try to install. What happened when you try to install it?

You used file explorer to check out your /system/media folder right? which one? But if you delete something there it not supposed to be there if you have correct rw permission there. I first think that it could be problem with bootanimation you try to install but if you can't delete something there for good I guess first look at your permission to write that folder.

I tried many and different bootanimations not just one and with different ways. I'm rooted and I use the root browser and the permissions are right. But the when I delete the original bootanimation or overwrite it after entering the media file it is there. (when I tried with recovery I got an error)

Basically no and yes. I moved the audio folder it moved successful but when I got back it was both at the moved and original location.
It's like the system generates the missing files by it self

Root again. Use "Easy Root Tool". If it stuck cleaning part just run it again and you should be good.
I was trying to change Xperia S bootanimation last year. Ending up to find that problem is much deeper then basic root and root explorer.
Didn't find the way how to apply custom one.
As I remember is somehow connected with bootloader or kernel

Don't know about Xperia S but with Z1 I can change bootanimation. I use X-plore by Lonely Cat Games with r/w rights and have zero problems.
I would suggest you do not have root.
Check if you have killed the ric.
Goto sys/kernel/security/Sony_ric and see if the file called enable says 0 or 1. Also check it just after a reboot.
If it's a 1 you will lose write permissions to the system partition after a reboot, which explains the symptoms you are talking about.
Changing the boot animation had nothing to do with kernel or bootloader, you just have to change the bootamimation.zip in system /media

Go to the twrp file manager, move the backup file to the root of your sdcard, reboot and it you will be able to see it in es and from your computer.
/sdcard/TWRP/backups
On a separate issue... On my device I can see my TWRP folder is there, but when I tap on it I get a message that the folder doesn't exist.

Thank you for posting this, I was wondering where the TWRP backups were going.
I noticed this when I first unlocked my Turbo as well, however I no longer have this problem and I have no idea what I did to solve it.
However, I always make backups onto my USB OTG flashdrive, so it wouldn't be much of a problem (at least for me).
