Backing up without Sync Manager? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
So I took the plunge and installed cyanogen, backed up my HTC one first with their software and went ahead and installed the rom.
I had no idea the HTC sync software was dependent on SenseUI being on the device so now I can't recover my contacts or text messages.
No problem, I thought, because cyanogen makes a backup of the current image during install right? Apparently not, so I'm thinking my best course of action is to reinstall a compatible stock rom, get the phone numbers/texts, back up to google and find an app to backup the texts and then reinstall cyanogen.
My question what is the best way to backup the phone so I can retrieve the info with out sync manager?
Also, if anyone knows of an app that lets you save your texts to a file over usb to your computer that would be good.
Thanks!

Thanks for the reply, it sent myself an hbk file although I'm not sure if CM supports the importing of that format. The search continues
Edit: I used SMS Backup and Restore in the end

Missing people

A while back after a rom or two always using Titanium backup a number of contacts disappeared. I had flashed a few rom and all contacts always saved the titanium. Then after another flash many were missing and would not or could not restore. Even downloading contact apps that revealed missing contacts did not show all I uses to have. I believe this was when I went from Fasty to either rc2.1 ics, cm7, or another gb rom. Any ideas?

I've found its more reliable to use google contacts and just sync after a flash. As for recovering the ones lost, probably no hope unless you made a Nandroid of the last ROM you remember having all of them.

I just go into contacts and click menu and restore/backup then I click backup to storage, then when I want them back I click restore from storage and its finds the file for you

That is another way to back up contacts. However, if that backup were not performed before flashing a wipe ROM, it goes back to not being able to recover lost contacts.
(true life story)
I once had flash party with other junkies like me. Suddenly, people got missing!!!
But, luckily, nobody noticed it and the party went on!

HELP! Lost all Contacts, Market, Apps, Astro file manager...

Hey everyone,
yesterday I was trying to upgrade my Android to Froyo. I did all the steps, everything was going great and when I had to restore (the final step) after I booted the phone everything looked just like when I bought it. The main differance though, was that all my contacts, messages, the Android Market, Astro File Manager and many other apps were GONE! So far I have managed to restore some of my messages, I've been trying to import/export my contacts, but still no sign of them . The most interesting thing is that when I connect my phone to the PC, I can still see all my pictures, music, apps. Can this be solved?
Oh and I forgot to mention that this appears a lot "The process com.google.process.gapps has stopped unexpectedly..." I read how to fix it, but I can't since I cannot access my file manager
Please if you have any idea, let me know. Thanks in advance
Hi are you from stock ROM and you upgraded to froyo of which ROM?
I hope you backup first before the upgrade and I hope you did some clean installation.
Let us know specifically your problem.
I noticed that you are new, please take sometime reading the rules and introducing yourself to everyone Topics are in General Section
Didn't u backup before?
Well yeah, that's normal. Every upgrade requires a full wipe which means that all your data will be erased. Didn't you read the warnings?

Yes, as I said I did all the required steps for upgrade (including the backup), but I guess that wasn't successful, even though I was certain I did it right. Anyway, I was trying to upgrade from 2.1 to Froyo.
Yup, I'm new. Thanks for your advice

Yep, that's true
I found my contacts But now the only problem that remains is that I don't have Android Market and Astro File Manager I tried to download them via internet, but when I click to download it says "This is not compatible with your device"
I am such a noob with Android, but I'm learning. Don't judge me

HTC backup. Why is "Restore from HTC backup" option greyed out?

I've always used the Google backup options but it seems that HTC backup will restore the home screen settings and layout too. I like that idea so I've changed to HTC backup in the Backup & Restore settings area.
I have an HTC account and it appears to backup successfully to my dropbox account. I can see the last backed up file and date.
What worries me tho is the "restore from HTC backup" option is always greyed out and can not be selected. I don't know if this is a bug or problem with my backup or it is greyed out as a safety feature that only becomes selectable after a factory.
At the moment I don't feel I can trust it to be "selectable" when I may actually need to use it, so I'll stick to Google back up until I find out more info
Does any one use HTC backup?
If so is your "Restore from HTC backup" greyed out?
If it is greyed out, at what point does it become selectable?
Thanks
My HTC one is completely unrooted stock 4.2.2. (2.24.401.1)

As far as i know you can restore from HTC backup after a factory reset, when you switch the phone back on on the initial setup screen you have option to restore from htc.
Why is the restore button greyed out its a good question was looking for an answer but could not find anything.
I have checked on htc website it says that you can restore during initial setup or by tapping the restore button in the settings, however in phone tips and help it says only during initial setup.
So maybe it is a left over of some kind from previous sense version where we could restore or maybe htc simply forgot to remove it from the settings??
Do not know.

You say you usually use Google backups. I think it says that this interferes with HTC's backup. Try disabling the Google backup from your account settings. See if that helps. I use HTC backup and while I only ever used it once after a flash with full wipe, it worked pretty Damn well! Just don't mess with the files in your dropbox.

Thanks for the reply, could you confirm that "restore from HTC backup" is greyed out on your Backup and Reset menu or is it selectable? I have now disabled google backup under the google account settings and the option is still greyed out???

I've updated to 4.3 Sense 5.5 and tried to restore from HTC backup I've made before factory reset and not small was my surprise when it said that no backup was available. I've installed everything manually again. "Restore from HTC backup" is greyed also. What is the solution? Should I disable Google sync?
I went into Apps - Tools - Setup and was able to reintiate the restore through that.
I had the same issue when I updated to ARHD 30.0 but it worked fine when I went from 30.0 to 31.0
I'd guess it's a Sense 5 -> Sense 5.5 mixup
I understand I'm supposed to turn off Google Backup. How can I do that?
Is it worth it? Or should I stay with Google Backup?

HTC Backup seems to not work properly for me.
It doesn't backup up automatically and when I try manually I get an error message ("there is a problem with your HTC account. Please check your account settings) after some time.
I then have to "re-authorize" Dropbox and then I can backup.
After that I have the same thing happening.
Have in mind that in Accounts and Sync the HTC Account is OFF, while I can't see a setting for the Dropbox account.
All this after 4.4
Any ideas?
Can't restore
HTC One:
I did backup both to google drive and dropbox.
Before "factory reset" I checked that I'm able to choose the restore file.
After "factory reset" I have no restore available!!!
Any idea?
I still have the dropbox files, but cannot find the google drive files.
Sorry for bumping this ancient thread but I just came along the same problem. I have my phone for a couple of months and I decided to run a full backup using the HTC Backup and Restore. My button was not greyed out, but when I pressed it, it said that there are no files. (dropbox backup)
After some research and reading a couple of guides online that instructed to do an account cleanup and afterwards it should've worked, I went to the HTC site to have a "Live chat" session with one of their workers. What she told me was that they have a problem with the specific application, and since they no longer have any business affiliation with dropbox, they can't help me and my files are lost. However, I still have the backup files in my dropbox folder.
Which leads me to my next question: Is there any way to either fix the problem, or manually use the files themselves and place them somewhere that the phone might be able to read and use them? I already tried to upload all of them on Google Drive but the application wouldn't see them there either. My phone runs Android 4.4.3 HTC sense 6. It's all factory settings except from the fact that it is rooted (just to install titanium after all this crap happened)
i had the restore greyed out-
because i had set the back up path to an external Harddrive-
so i quit htc manager,
plugged in my Harddrive,
then open htc manager
then the resotre was clickable again
hope this helps-

Merge multiple Viber messages databases in Samsung Captivate

Hey all, i dont know if this is possible but I flashed my captivate and before i could restore the data with titanium backup, i got a flurry of messages from my viber friends. basically, if i restore the backup now, i lose the new messages and without restoring, i cant have my old messages in the history.
is it possible to merge the viber_messages file on the captivate with the one from the backup? maybe in a sql manager or somthing? i'm sorry but i dont know sql but was wondering if it could work?
thanks

hello.. I think it will not work, because when I tried that, it require me to do a data wipe, so you will lose all your messaging hisotry then on your viber,

[Q] Upgraded to CM11 - want my Contacts and Messages back

I upgraded my S3 Mini from stock 4.1.2 to CyanogenMod 11. Thinking I was clever, I took a full backup of everything with both Titanium Pro as well as Online Nandroid Backup before flashing CM11.
Only... it looks like I wasn't so clever after all.
If I use Titanium to restore the Contacts Data only then the Contacts application crashes on launch, every time. Some reading suggests that Titanium doesn't always work nicely with system functions, and Contacts is considered a system function. To be fair to Titanium, it warned me before doing the restore that the backup was from a different ROM and might not work.
My contacts weren't synchronised with my Google account so I can't restore from there.
Is there any way to get the Contacts and Messages data restored? Are there third-party programs (for any of Android, Windows, Linux, or OS X, all of which I have available) which can read Titanium backups and export the data in a format that CM11 can use?
You can use this app. I use it on cm11 without any problem at all.
I tried that program, but I can't get it to import from the Titanium backup files. Perhaps I'm missing something in the options, but all I can see there is to transfer data between the phone, the SIM, Google, and Excel.
However, it looks like a useful program for the future, to save me this sort of headache the next time I mess about with phone ROMs; thanks for the suggestion.
Well, I'm getting somewhere, and this is something to keep my occupied on Christmas Day morning while waiting for the rest of the house to wake up...
I went back through Titanium's support documentation again and found something I'd missed earlier: the program has an option to "migrate system data", which is recommended when restoring to a different ROM.
I've got my messages and contact groups back, but I still don't have the individual contacts back. But, progress is progress, and I'll keep plugging away at it.
Worst case scenario, I'll just re-enter them all by hand but I'd rather avoid that if possible.
Reverting back to the pre-rooted stock 4.1.2 firmware from this forum, in the hope that Titanium would happily restore everything without needing the "migrate system data" option didn't work, sadly. The phone got stuck in a boot loop, and reflashing the PARAM file didn't fix it. So, it looks like I'm stuck with CM11. Serves me right for jumping straight in with both feet; no-one else to blame but myself.
However, it looks like the Titanium backup is in SQLite format, so all is not lost. I've managed to dump the data table successfully, so all I need to do now is parse it for importing. But that can wait for another day, as the rest of the house has finally woken up and it's time for breakfast and presents.
Merry Christmas, everyone.
Well, I persevered and finally got the 4.1.2 rooted stock ROM back on the phone without it becoming stuck in a boot loop. Titanium was able to restore my contacts and messages successfully. Now to investigate a more sensible synchronisation/backup tool before messing with a custom ROM again, perhaps Phosimgo mentioned in the first reply.

Seriously!?
I backed up all of my stuff with TitaniumBackUpPro and flashed from 4.1.2. to CM 11 and can't get my contacts restored either.
Your telling me in need to flash back to stock and export my contacts with a different app before flashing CM again?
How is that tool Phosimgo recomended?
I ended up using Super Backup. It worked flawlessly. For the future, my contacts are now backed up to my Google account.
