What problems to look out for when buying this tablet - Asus Transformer TF701

Hi, I just bought this tablet (wont get it for 3 weeks ), but I wanted to get an opinion on what to look out for. I heard that I don't need to worry about the build date so much since their wasn't many problems with the tablet when it came out? (is that correct??)
Should I look for dead pixels or broken digitizer? Also, was the screen coming out of the tablet an issue also? and was there a way to figure it out before it actually happens?
So, please let me know of any problems I can look out for and how I can detect it. thanks for the help!!

On mine the screen is not properly attached I guess glued around the edge. Its a slight issue but something to look for.

Only real issues that turn up on here is the faulty dock which is fixed with the 201404 edition. You can fix it yourself if you get an earlier model but it will cost you a bit more that way.

Has anyone here had any issues with wifi disconnection problems?
Also, did anyone have any issues with this tablet picking up fingerprints easily like the tf300t?

Can you tell me what your build date on your tablet is? You can find that on the back of the box you had the tablet in.
Also, are you using a custom ROM and unlocked, or are you on normal stock?
Or were you talking about the fingerprints issue?

Ok, here is an update. I just got the tablet (a week early!! ), but the tablet build date is 2013.10. Should I be really paranoid right now, or did they never really change the build date on the tablet only?? I am really nervous about it

Why??? There are hardly any issues with the TF701 (tablet only) aside from manufacturing defects you can get with any device you buy. If you don't have those - and they should become obvious just using it normally - enjoy this wonderful toy!
And yes - it's even better on CROMi-X, but good enough on stock that you can just leave it that way if you're not into flashing/unlocking (which would void your warranty).

Open question:
Any suggestion(s) on what you did to enhance your tablet experience? Aside from rooting, that is...
This is (finally) my foray into the tablet market. Have a Note 2 for my phablet, so going to a tablet seemed redundant. Found this for $280 on ebay brand new (reputable, actual company... not just "some seller"). Very excited to get my hands on this when it arrives later this week. Have a 64GB SanDisk microsd coming in too.
No idea what I'm going to use it for, other than web, fantasy football, some other non-essential need(s)...

Well, I am a student in school, so I actually mainly use this tablet to document all my notes using my stylus for writing formulas out and using the keyboard for typing the remainder of the notes. Rooting is really awesome though, you can freeze system updates, you can also install a custom rom so you can have some perfect AOSP goodness (although the stock rom is really close to AOSP). In my personal advice, I would suggest keeping your tablet on 4.3 rather than 4.4.2 since the 4.4.2 has some battery drain problems with its kernal.
Also, if you plan on getting the keyboard, beware, there is alot of defective keyboards around for the Tf701t sadly (you can read all about it all around this forum). Ultimately, just have fun and try to Nvidia Tegrazone games. Also, you can't go wrong with the free walking dead season 1 and 2 in the google play store. Enjoy!!

My tablet went back for replacement because of loose glass. Also keyboard at the same time because of disconnection issues.
They replaced the tablet but sent back the keyboard saying there was no issue.
Sent back the keyboard a second time... Every time i tough the tablet when in dock it disconnects and reconnects. They returned it a second time saying nothing was wrong.
I just gave up on using the keybaord with the tablet and use it to charge the tab when im not near a power plug now.

I use my tablet with the keyboard on a desk only with a mouse like a laptop. I don't have any disconnection issues that way because it's on a steady surface. I carry a tablet stand with me when I want to be portable. However, when I'm flying in a plane, I connect it to the keyboard and keep it shut off until ready to use it so it stays charged. I also use a POETIC brand case that holds a stylus in the back so my tablet experience is a little better. I really like this tablet and keep the keyboard use to a minimum. I was really dismayed when I saw how much I spent on the tablet/keyboard combo and then to have quality control issues with the keyboard. This is how I cope with it.

[Q] Before I buy..

I am going to Barnes & Noble today to get the Nook Color. I want to buy it so I can root it and use it as a tablet/ereader. Are the newest version of the NC's rootable or do I need to buy an older version off eBay or something. Thanks in advance!
No, you're fine. The current firmware, 1.01, is rootable. It'll probably come with 1.0 anyway.
If you want a great value on a quality android tablet, I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Alright thanks man, I am actually buying this over the Galaxy Tab, lol. Hope it is as amazing as it sounds.
Buy two nooks, set them next to each other, and cross your eyes a lot. Now you hve a 3d tablet for $100 less than a galaxy tablet...

If you can live without GPS, cameras, 3G, etc., I see no reason to pay over twice as much for a Galaxy Tab. Mine has everything I would have wanted from a Galaxy Tab-- and this is without a custom ROM.

Yes, I bring my evo everywhere, so I can just easily tether to it, I don't need GPS or cameras because obviously the evo has them.

Yep - that's exactly what I do. Wireless Tether app (version pre-12 I think I'm using) works great.
While there's no GPS for navigation, it gets other location services from the network, so Google Maps and whatnot get my location to within 100 yards or so.
I’m using my DroidX to tether.
I don’t need camera and crap on the tablet.
I have NFS Shift running on mine flawlessly along with just about all the apps I’ve installed.
I think the new thread should be “what does not work”. Everything I’m using sems to work.

Cool, thanks for the feedback
You may want to buy somewhere that has a better return policy, but thats really up to you.
When I was at B&N today just to look, two people walked in within 5 minutes with defective units...One had no WIFI, the other had screen issues.
They sent the guy with no Wifi home, telling him he must have typed in his password wrong...They would not exchange for him.. They never even looked at it.
They sent the lady home because she did not have her charger.
I JUST bought mine at Best Buy...First one had a dead dark pixel right smack in the middle of the screen, also had some dust and the flicker everyone mentions..
I exchanged it, however they really gave it the 3rd degree and looked like they did not want to exchange it..They pulled all the packaging apart, turned it on, went through all the menues, etc....
Second one is in good shape, but does have a stuck pixel that only is seen on a full black screen..I can live with that I guess.
Examine yours closely, because I have a feeling there is quality issues.
I would assume they are getting a large amount of returns now and are probably going through them thoroughly..
Alright thanks, I might consider buying from Best Buy then instead.
Just got mine Christmas Eve. I had looked long and hard at a Galaxy Tab. But at the price, I just couldn't pass up the Nook. With rooting, it is everything that I wanted in a pad. As mentioned before, coupled with my rooted HD2, it is an awesome duo.
And as a stand-alone, the Nook does everything I could want. It came with 1.0, but updating was simple. Auto-nootering was just as simple. AWESOMENESS!
Another possibility for the return scrutiny is that that B&N/Best Buy are now well aware of what many are doing with these, and are happy to sell more units--as long as it isn't causing them to lose money.
. . . And one way they could lose money is if people screw things up rooting and want a replacement or refund. Dead pixels have nothing to do with rooting, but the retail world could easily over-generalize as "don't take NookColor returns lightly."

[Q]Any development updates?

I haven't heard ANYTHING in the past few weeks about ICS, it's status, the work anyone else is doing (except Leo and Xron) or even the possibility of any updates to the beta we're on now. I've heard rumours of a min Jan launch for ICS on our TP, but can anyone else confirm?

Yes yes their one silly rule of not asking about when it's done. I didn't ask just about CM specifically, I also stated "the work anyone else is doing". I'm just looking for people keeping their ears to the ground and hearing things about whatever might be going on from whomever.

That's all we know for now. Hope that their work on ICS is so successfull that they literally have no time to post about updates
The vB2.8 Xron thread in the device forum has Leo talking all the time about how he's getting other really great devs involved. I'm sure 2.9 will be out soon, but CM9 is a different story.
Devs are always hard at work. They like to tinker... Patience is key. As for right now, Xron is good enough for me. I use it every day. Can do anything with it besides Skype (although I really haven't tried that yet).
"A little nonsense, now and then, is relished by the wisest men."
we have a very good xron rom so it's not difficult to wait few months for ics)
If you want to stay tuned , check dalingrin's twitter and cm's site.
Xron is pretty awesome. I'm thinking about getting a native android tablet like a Galaxy Tab 10.1 (someone is selling a brand new one for $300) and just selling this Touchpad. Maybe I'll wait it out and see. Has anyone had any issues with the casing cracking on their touchpad? What can I do to get warranty?

i will buy your touchpad if you decide to sell... I know a few devs ready and willing to buy it. This will have ICS long before Galaxy will have a good working one.
It will be a little bit for ICS. It's being worked on by whom I consider the best in the industry. Problem is we have NO GOOGLE or HP support for the touchpad. Then top it off we have a dual boot situation. Tonight I booted webOS for the first time in a month. That lasted an hour then back to android.
There is no way in Hell I would consider giving up my touchpad. No other tablet will have dual boot with two fantastic operating systems along with one that has native beats leaving the door cracked open for beats in android.
But, if you can't wait, name the price and what type of TP you have.
Thanks,

It's a 32 GB wifi Touchpad. I'm having a lot of issues with the casing getting cracks along the speakers and charging port. HP better warranty this. Apparently it's happened to a lot of people. Like I said, I don't know what I'm going to do yet. It works alright right now, a little on the heavy side and I have a few android phones I can sell to make up the $300 someone wants for their brand new never opened Galaxy Tab 10.1. I bought the HP Touchpad knowing that because WebOS was linux based that Android would be possible eventually. It's just development is moving a long a little too slowly. That's not including your ROM though, Leo. You're doing some awesome work for the tablet and in fact am the only reason why I'm holding on to it this long. But eventually the weight thing might be the swaying factor and the fact that a naively supported device is going to have so many less issues and small problems.
We'll see what I decide to do. I have someone looking at a few phones I threw up for sale and what HP says about the warranty on this thing. Max I would make you pay? The original $157.50 I paid for it plus shipping.

well the cracks around the speakers is cosmetic. Contact HP Support they will replace the casing.
I had the same issue with my TP. The customer support was good. They sent me a return box and label. All you have to do is to pack you TP as per instructions and drop it at nearby UPS store. I received the repaired TP within a week.
Act fast before the warranty expires.
Do you really expect these guys to be working on this much over Christmas? They have lives too, you know. Xron has become a great ROM lately as well and is getting new releases all the time. I'm sure ICS will be out some time this month.

My contacts tell me that making ICS for the Touchpad is almost like starting over. They have to get the drivers and all the goodies fixed before anything even close to stable can be released. It's sort of like when we waited for Gingerbread to come out. Man, it seemed like it took forever, but it was WELL worth the wait.
Patience, young ones.
Well I called HP and told them that it's cracking. They said they're going to send me a box that I can send the Touchpad back in and they'll fix the casing or give me a new one. I think I might end up getting it replaced, not touching it for fear of possible cracking AGAIN and wait to see what we're gonna get with ICS. Since we have all month to wait anyway it's a good time to send this Touchpad back to get it replaced. I just need to make sure I uninstall all the android based stuff and reset partitions so they don't see what I did.
why would anyone care about the TouchPad when new tablets are coming out

Upgrade or downgrade to Nexus 7 2013?

I love my original Nexus 7.. but it's finally starting to fall apart. I'm a super power user and take the thing everywhere and it's just beat to hell.
So here's the question.. upgrade to a new Nexus or buy another original nexus?
Lots of complaints on the new one out there.. rattle in the camera, bad touchscreen issues, more..
If you own both.. that's the comments I'd really like to hear. What do you think of one vs the other?
Facing the same dilemma, I have an opportunity to sell my N7 and get the 2nd generation.

I'm in the same boat - my original Nexus 7 was replaced after a month or so because of a screen fault. The replacement then suffered horrendous battery drain (~70% overnight when off!) after an Android update, so it also went back to Google. I replaced it with the 2013 model, which clearly had touch screen issues straight out of the box and random freezes, so back it went too, this time to Amazon who I bought it from - I'll never again buy anything from Google!.
In the month since it went back I've been considering what to do, and in all honesty I'm looking at avoiding Nexus 7's altogether, because of the problems and also because Google's customer service is simply the absolute worst I've ever encountered.
I have a large Amazon gift certificate balance which would cover the cost of the 2013 Nexus 7, but if I *was* to buy another Nexus 7 I think I'd go for the 2012 model and hope that the KitKat upgrade didn't cause any battery issues. Also by buying from Amazon there'll be no hassle if (when?) things go wrong.

I didn't have any issue with my google tablet. I bought my first one off of someone who had used it for about 6 months and I've used it every day at work and at home. Rooted, modded and ran like a champ. I put so many miles on it that it's starting to fall apart around itself. But I've loved everything about it. For the price I haven't used anything that even comes close. (IMO)
On paper the 2013 is closer to what I'm looking for.. but man are there are lot of complaints about it online.. definitely has me a bit nervous.

Well I suppose the safest thing would be to buy the 2013 model from Amazon, and if you have problems just return it for a refund. Any touch screen problems will show up before 30 days - mine showed up during the initial set-up process!

I am sure the issues are not that wide spread, if you look closely at any electronic device the first batch is always not 100%. pick any device ull find problems. its like after software now devices are also in beta state so buy nexus 7 2013 and check if u find problem then replace and if the problem still exist then replace with some alternative. Remember the power u want is only available with nexus devices or els u cn always check galaxy tab and that will cost u more so basically wither u get the latest update with fairly powerful device with low price point or slow updates super power and less issues. choice is yours.

What an odd outlook. I've already had the Nexus 2013 which as I said was faulty straight out of the box. I am not alone in this as there are indeed *many* people having problems with it, and I won't be buying another as I'm not paying to be a beta tester.
You should check yours as you seem to be missing many letters
lol i am using 2012 version and yeah i am bad at typing and yes i am worse when it comes to touch screen keyboards but since you asked question in 2012 version nexus 7 thread u should expect a 2012 fan

I'm not keen on touch keyboards either, which is a slight problem with a tablet! Lol!
Are you using KitKat on your 2012 N7? I'm still tempted to buy another if KK's working ok on it. I read some reports that it broke 3G and disabled SMS apps in favour of Google's own (can't remember what it's called), but as I'd go for the WiFi only model these problems wouldn't matter to be. And besides, they're quite cheap now.

I just replaced my 12 N7 with a new 13 N7. Bought from Amazon. No issues yet. Used about a week so far. Much quicker/smoother than the 12 model IMO. For the money, its tough to beat.

[Q] Newer build TF701t docks confirmed defect free?

I've seen posts that newer builds of the keyboard dock would have the connection issues fixed. Has anyone gotten one of these " 2013.11" or later newer build keyboard docks and can confirm it actually has the issues resolved? I'd really like to get the keyboard dock for my tablet, but don't want to deal with the issues of the broken keyboard dock.
So has anyone actually gotten a working keyboard dock from a newer batch?
Thanks!
My friend is getting one for Christmas. Unfortunately that means you'll have to wait until then to get confirmation from me.

I've had two docks now. I got the replacement on December 2. It's funny because I never had a problem with disconnection until I went to write a response to you OP. I can tell you that the second one seemed put together far better than the first, but it still has A LOT of wiggle room in it. It does not dock like the TF201 did. It has no support on the front. That is nice if you use a screen protector like I do, but like I said, it does have issues.
The primary reason I buy these tablets is because of the dock. I really hope Asus does the right thing here. I hated my tf201 because of the extreme lag caused by the i/o controller or whatever, and now this. Kind of a drag.

Was the "build date" number different on the packaging when you got the replacement?
I agree, the primary reason I got this tablet was the real keyboard dock for it. Seemed like a much better solution than the generic bluetooth keyboard docks I see on the internet. It's funny...always heard about the IO issues with this series of tablets...but dock always seemed to be really solid. The one time I actually go buy one...the IO issues are fixed, but the dock is now having issues.
On the transformerforum someone got a tablet with dock with production date 2013.11.
He reports that the flex is nearly absent and it connects more firmly.
Also the connection problem didn't popup.
Good news but now waiting for more people with the same experience.

I received my 6th keyboard a few days ago from Amazon. I was happy to see I finally got one with a manufacture date of 11/2013. I immediately inserted an SD card and tried moving the viewing angled. I did not see the SD card disconnecting and reconnecting so was hopeful.
Last night I noticed that the dock was not charging the tablet. I had to disconnect and replace the tablet in the dock 5 or 6 times before the widget showed the tablet charging.
This morning I tried viewing a video file on the external SD card in the dock. Changing the viewing and repeatedly caused loss of the data connection and the video player to crash.
Fail :crying:
I had the TF101 since it came out and was happy and had none of these problems. I now have had 2 of the tablets and 6 of the docks. I really want the TF701 to work for me but think I need to give up on this device find another option. I might try replacing dock or both dock and tablet again just because I want the tablet/dock combo and I am stubborn.
I got message that Tabletcenter had the TF701 in stock again and I could get a swap.
In the store they showed me the newest batch and it was 2013.10 so now I said keep it buddy and give money back.
So for now no TF701 anymore till it is proven that the problems are solved.
Using the TF700 again.:crying:

I certainly would not accept a dock with October manufacture date. You did the smart thing.
@marcmarshall - how was the flex in the 2013.11 build compared to your previous dock versions?

Not sure what you mean by flex but I have not noticed any obvious slop in the connection on any of them. I really went by performance and did not check closely for that though. I did have to replace a dock with my original TF101 and I learned back then that you want to hear two crisp snaps as the connectors on both sides lock into place. I have been having trouble getting that and even when I do I still get problems. The connection right now feels tight with no obvious slop but I just did another swivel test as I am writing this and the SD card disconnected and reconnected causing a video to crash.

The 11/2013 dock I have now had that kind of flex. I never thought that would effect the connection but maybe it does.

If my repaired dock has that flex I'll be happy - my 2013/10 was far worse than that.

My 2013.10 from ebuyer is similar to the YouTube video. Also I've had no disconnections so far
Guess there is no need for me to do a RMA for the moment.

My TF701 (2013.10) from eBuyer does have flex, but no disconnects as of yet. I've tried various angles.
My guess is that the flex could be to stop the few reported instances of cracked glass (previous generation Transformer Pads).

My TF700 has about that much flex and it doesn't loose any connection with the dock. Maybe the TF701 connection issues arenot completey caused by this flex?

Screen Died (and I'm unlocked) - Suggestions?

I'm on Cromi-X and last night the screen just died. No warning or other issues were noted. My wife was in the middle of a game of PVZ2 and it stopped working, She assumed that the battery had just hit 0%. I have been on Cromi-X for about 5 weeks and had zero problems - the tablet was running just fine. It's still running fine, with an HDMI cable and dock, the tablet is perfectly useable. So now for suggestions.
1) Is there any point in going through the effort of returning the tablet to stock and sending it back to Asus (hoping that they will honor the warranty)? Obviously unlocking and rooting aren't going to cause a hardware failure like this, but their language is pretty clear that unlocking voids the warranty regardless of whether or not this has anything to do with the failure.
2) In a sad coincidence, my second TF701T was damaged yesterday in a car accident (yes, I actually lost two tablets the same day). In this case, the problem seems to be just the digitizer as the display looks perfect below the cracked glass, but I know that replacements for qty=1 aren't really an option. That one wasn't unlocked by the way (too bad they weren't reversed). This one may get covered by insurance since the other driver ran a red light and smashed into the car. However, I might end up with a functional LCD available to use on the other one (I'm guessing that the digitizer is probably fine). I realize that this is a tricky repair.
3) Are there any known problems anyone has heard of about screens going dead like this? Is there a connector that could have worked its way loose or anything like that?
What do you folks think I should try? If #1 is a 0% chance of getting Asus to fix under warranty, then I'd rather not waste the time and money on round-trip freight. On the other hand, if there is a chance, I'd be screwing myself by opening the tablet to look for something loose or fixable on the connection to the screen which definitely would void the warranty.
Thanks in advance.

I have something I have just discovered 2 days ago.... When I was playing real racing 3, my tablet turned off as the battery got discharged. I connected the charger and turned the tablet on, then all I could see was gliches on the screen. The colors were hazy. And the touchscreen was not usable. I think it is a hardware issue because it did not affect only android but also the asus logo that appears before loading the os. I tried to reboot several times in vain. Fortunatlely, I found out how to get rid of those glistches. Very simple: when the os boots, I lock the screen then unlocked it. Yeah very weird!!! the problem was reproduced as well as the solution... However, I dont know if it happens only when the tablet goes off while gaming or does it happen every time the tablet gets discharged. Other than that, everything works flawlessly!!!
You unlocked it which means no you no longer have a warranty. ASUS are quite clear on this. You can send it back to Asus and they will charge you to fix it.
Or you could open the back and check the ribbon hasn't come lose? Same with the other one, get a screen from eBay and fix it yourself. Probably some vids you can use on you tube.

So, I opened the tablet. Angry Dinosaur was right, it really is easy. Unfortunately, the cables connecting the display to the board look fine. I haven't seen any spare TF701T screens on Ebay, but I will keep looking. If anyone knows of a place, please let me know. Thanks.

I'm bored A week speaking Japanese and nothing but Japanese TV and crappy BG WiFi modem I need some normality. That's you guys with your broken gadgets.
I normally don't do this, but based on what just happened, I added the Amazon 2-yr drops, spills, and hardware failure protection for $45. This one DOESN'T say anything about unlocking voiding a warranty (an that might be hard to prove in the event of a drop anyway). Anyone have any experience with this? For $45 it seems like a decent alternative to the loss of Asus warranty when I root. I can't not do it either, since I noticed such a big improvement on Cromi-X.
SBDAGS, if you are bored for a minute I had another question for you. I know that you love the stock browser and I agree that it's faster than Chrome. I want the extra screen space and so am using the quick controls. The one problem for me is that I like to scroll with my left thumb and pull out the menu with my right. I end up accidentally pulling up the quick controls and jumping to another page when I'm trying to scroll. This happens about every 5th scroll attempt. Do you have any idea how hard it would be to modify the labs setting to allow quick controls to function off left, right, both - maybe check boxes? I searched but couldn't find anything already done. I could create another donation fund for you if you think it's not a huge amount of work.

It'll be in the smali code probably. A good question for someone like @elesbb who loves these challenges. it's not a question of being bored for this one, I don't have the tools with me to decompile the apk.
