Hi, I'm new to rooting androids, I'm using a HTC One 801s (M7_UL) from Singapore:
Is it possible to flash a ROM for M7 on my M7UL without causing any damage? I want to flash the new CM11 but my camera doesn't work and I suspect it is due to the fact that it was not updated since Jan 2014...
Hey mate, camera should work fine on cm11 but if you can't find a stable version of cm11 drop down to like the latest stable version of cm10. Also Android Revolution HD make some amazing roms they are mainly the same as the stock but come with xposed installer and rooted so you can customise the interface more. If you flash the roms correctly you won't damage your phone, just make sure you follow instructions. Google play edition Rom for m7 is average, I didn't like Google play edition myself as it was too plain and boring. Sense based ARHD roms I have found to be the best though. Google them hope I helped a bit

ARHD comes with Sense toolbox also which adds further customizations to the basic stock sense roms. Sense toolbox is the best. Just know that the HTC sense camera app is better than the ones you will get on stock android based roms and you will also lose BlinkFeed on those stock android roms. Check it out!

Thanks so much man! But my question still stands, if the ROMS I want have the m7 version but not the m7ul, can I still flash them safely?

Their are no M7 only roms on this forum, but before flashing anything you need to read the instructions and support list for each Rom you intend to flash, most of the guys on here have the M7_UL and a few with the M7_U however they still build there roms on the UL base, if you did happen to find one you wanted to use that was M7_U only then it would work but you would loose LTE functionality.
I've only installed roms that support my specific m7 model myself just to be safe. Thing is, to flash a Rom that's for a different model, you would most likely have to get s-off on your phone and change your phone's model id and perhaps cid before the phone will accept the Rom. Take for example, when I installed Google play edition, had to unlock bootloader, root, custom recovery, gain s-off, install a different hboot, change model id and cid before being able to flash the Rom, because if my model I'd didn't appear as GOOG then the flash would fail. What Rom were you after that doesn't support your current phone model?

Kudos to you for being interested in rooting :good:
Shiromaru already answered the question here but why would you choose to remain on STOCK??? In the Android Development Thread of the HTC Incredible S, we have a TON of ROMs for use. They can be ICS with Sense 3.6. There can be AOSP or AOKP ICS. Theres Sense 4.X with ICS. Theres AOSP Jellybean 4.1.1 to 4.2.2. Theres really a lot to try. If you want to keep the (****y (excuse my language)) Sense 3.6 then u can try ARHD which is very stable. Theres also Blackout ROM and Incredible Bliss. If you want Sense 4.X you can try Nik_Project_X_Rebirth or Sabsa Prime. All of these ROMs have been modified to improve youre over all experience on the phone. I really would suggest you flash a custom ROM.

Rooting via htcdev will not give you s_off. That means every time you install a custom Rom you have manually flash the boot image using a utility called fastboot. And you can't change radios either. However for an initial root experience go right ahead with htcdev method and once you are comfortable you may follow guides in how to downgrade and then get root and soff using the revolutionary method. You may then also want to change your bootloader.
If you are going to root your phone then it makes no sense (pun intended) to remain with stock Rom. And as listed here in earlier post there are a plethora of roms to choose from.
Welcome to the joys of the android world.

I bought this 32 GB HTC One T-Mobile phone which is unlocked, and will be here in a few days. It IS an M7, right? It has rooted stock firmware (not sure if Sense or AOSP) but will probably flash a custom ROM. I read up on the Google Edition bootloader/recovery, and read Vomer's guide as well. I'm not sure if I need to do the whole GE process before I flash a GE ROM, or which GE/AOSP ROM I should go with. It seems like most of them are Sense, so which ones are AOSP?
The one original android development forum is the asop Roms .
There are GE versions that will work with your current setup. The only reason to "convert to the GE version is for official ota updates.

The what? Oh, you mean the ORIGINAL One forums has AOSP ROMs? How do you tell the difference between the original One and the 2013 model?
How often are there OTA updates? Those are usually compiled into current custom ROMs, right?
In the case of the HTC One, would Sense be better over AOSP (not just because of the camera)? It would seem there are more Sense-based ROMs than AOKP/AOSP ones. I also see a few Sense/GE ROMs. What exactly does that mean? Is it just Sense with the additional AOSP settings and options? If I wanted the best camera, should I just stick with Sense?

There is a android dev and there is an original dev. Read up on the stickies and you'll get an explanation, after you read ask questions with direction so users won't have to type up 2-3 paragraphs explaining everything out .

Stock Sense 5 is very good. You can try AOSP ROMs and see if you don't miss the Sense features. The camera app has been ported to AOSP if I remember well so you don't loose Zoe/Highlights.
I'm stock and haven't planned on going o AOSP or other custom ROMs because I'm more than happy with Sense 5, except some things here and there, but the same can be said about any other ROM. the one thing I change was the launcher. It's good, but not as flexible as Nova, specially for adding more columns/rows to home screens.
Hi, I'm new here and new also to rooting etc.
I have successfully unlocked and rooted my M7 and using TWRP recovery.
I am under the impression you can't update OTA when rooted, I would like a standard ROM with sense 6, but I just have a couple of questions....
1. Could someone supply a link to the best stable Sense 6 ROM suitable for an unlocked UK M7?
2. Could you also explain how to install the ROM using some not too technical language
Thanks for your help
Ben

I cant tell you much as I am using Miui rom and i have killed an M7 a while back but Viper ROm is the best I have used and that is Sense 6. Bare in mind I have not used a Sense 6 rom at all but last Viper i used was 5.5 and it was great.
There is Android Revolution HD, im not sure if this is Sense 6 but is is a custom rom as close to stock that you can get.
Just download the ZIP and enter your receovery and flash, it is simple as. Just dont wipe internal SD card..

So I download the zip file on my computer, where do I save it on my phone, bearing in mind it doesn't have an SD card?
Thanks for your help by the way
Sent from my HTC One
Just place it on the internal memory of the phone. Don't put it in any folders. Then boot into TWRP, select "Install zip from SD card" (the internal space paritition is labelled as "sdcard" due to the way android works), find the zip and install it.
Awesome, I guess I don't delete the original ROM then?

You would be well advised to make a back up of your original rom first. If something goes wrong you can go back to it, may be hard to find it on the web if you dont.
Best advice. Do a nandroid backup of your Rom now and try a few different ones. Personally I like android revolution hd. If you are going to try that use twrp 2.6.3.3. It doesn't like other versions very much

I know you've asked for sense roms, but I would definitely give some aosp roms a try. I've always liked aosp better. That said, it seems like development for this phone leans more towards sense based roms and definitely sense kernels. Only a couple of aosp kernels to choose from. I'm new to this phone (switched to Tmo a couple months ago and didn't want to buy a new phone on payments), but I was disappointed to see that after being out for a year the aosp development was somewhat lacking.
Hello everyone, my name is Manuel and I'm Italian (so excuse my bad english)
I am an unhappy owner of a HTC Sensation XL, unhappy because since I bought it, it's really never worked, despite having been in reparation for 4-5 times.
I have two questions then:
What is today, the most stable, lighter and faster ROM for this smartphone?
I had ICS 4.0.3 with Sense 3.6 and it worked decently, then I have flashed the recovery (TWRP before CWM after, because TWRP would not turn off) and I installed 4.0.3 no sense v1.1, Pac-Man,Tik-Tak and RunnyKitKat v17, with none of them worked properly, especially, poor pictures, frequent crashes and wifi that does not function.
My second question is:
If I wanted to restore the original OS that is ICS 4.0.3, is it possible? He was the one that worked best.
Where could I find my ICS ROM STOCK?
P.S.: Of course, for best ROM, I mean I need lighter but that it works everything we need, without having great things because I know that it has very limited hardware.
Thank You
"Best ROM" threads are not allowed in XDA as it tends to start a series of opinion-based rants. The advice is always to try ROMs for yourself as only you can determine what is "good" or "bad" and so on...
However, in the interests of allowing others to help, I'll leave this open. If it deteriorates, then it will be closed.
Thanks
I think you should check sticky thread in android development are.
RUU word suggest htc ROM which are original.
Download, relock your phone, start fastboot, and easily install downloaded specific RUU.
Device will restart and done.
About best ROM;
I hace used multiple ROMs but finally i uses runny kitkat with blinkfeed and xposed framework module.
I didnt found any bug till today(approx 2month use)
I think it will be helpful.

Btw i dont have s-off, same as you, s-off is not necessory..
Download XLmultitool kit and do as screen shows , ( s-off)
Other option for s-off is farjadb software for it.
And runny kitkat does not have any remarkable bug yet. And wifi issue is/was/will be not there.. So feel free and enjoy it.
For xposed module, search for xpised in xda, and download gravity box and you will get even more customization which is provided in ROM inbuilt.
More advanced Sensation XL u will get.

to be honest theres issues with all roms for this device,
with sense there was issues with bluetooth and audio
with aosp there was various nuances, i tried my best to fix what i could.
not any one person will have the same opinion on this matter as it depends per person.
runy kitkat when i stopped building it was pretty much stable,
there is no tik-tak rom im aware of though...
I recently made the switch from HTC to Samsung as it looked like Samsung slightly won the battle this round. The only thing I miss about my HTC phone is the ViperOne Rom. ViperOne was packed with amazing features, customization options, good with the battery and still ran smoother than my Edge's stock software. So the question is... Are there/will there be any Roms that even put a fight up against everything that Viper Roms have to offer? Thanks for the help!!
just switched from having 3 htc phones in a row as well. I know how u feel. Missing Viper Roms to. Xtrestolite Deodexed unified ROM is the only thing even close that we can flash right now.

Yea exactly the same boat for me. I saw that Xtrestolite*rom. Is it stable? My biggest pet peeve is glitchy roms lol.
I haven't had any problems so far. Runs fast and smooth.
Sorry for noob question but can I flasg that rom on the att version without issue?

Xtrestolite rom? yeah, kinda funky while using aroma but it does work.
not the 2.1 version but 1.5. the 2.1 is for android 5.1.1 which we dont have yet
I relate to this. I miss ViperOne. I keep having memory leak issues with my s6e. I need to restart it so often for it to function properly. I wish viper would do something for our phone. I'll take a look at Xtrestolite. I also hate that I cannot unlock hotspot.
