Increase size of SYSTEM partition to prevent crashes and FCs

Hello guys,
I'm running the latest Onecosmic's ICS on my i9000.
I'm getting FCs all over the place where the apps start force closing on start up and I end up not being able to use the phone at all.
I've been running into this problem before but I seem to have finaly figured out what the reason is. At first I thought it would be a Cache problem, which can be fixed by using a cache cleaner app periodicaly. This helps Sync problems which cause Gapps to force close continuously but it doesn't help when the system begins to crash.
I figured it's the size of the System partition, which is pathetically small for ICS. 200MB just doesn't seem to be enough space.
Is there a way to increase the size of the System partition? Maybe some kind of partitioning tool or something. Because the phone has more than enough space; with 185 apps I've used only about 600MB of the internal space available for apps.
Would appreciate any help
Hi,
As far as I know, the system partition is read only. So no space is allocated on it at run-time and therefore it's size can't really affect anything.
There can be issues where the partition size is too small when installing a new Rom and the installer script doesn't notice and so some of the ROM just doesn't get installed; but in general, it isn't used for run-time storage, only reading.
thanks for the reply. But why am I getting such nasty system collapses where everything stops working?

Try fixing permissions through CWM recovery. Or if that doesn't help, then maybe your /datadata partition is full. Type "df"in terminal to see..and you'll find solution for that from general section.
Edit: I was in the mood, do here's the URL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444333, but it's meant for CM7/CM9, so I can't guarantee that it'll work with onecosmic's rom..it'll probably work just fine, but I'm just saying

[Q] How is memory managed on my Note?

I have to be honest and say I am a bit baffled when I look at the 'Storage' breakdown on my Note. So I have a few questions as to how RAM and flash memory work together.
From looking at some threads on the forums here I understand of the 16GB of flash memory on my Note :
2GB is reserved for the ROM
2GB is reserved for apps, actually my phone says I have 1.97GB
The rest (11.06 GB) as general storage e.g. music, movies, documents, etc.
Wondering what happened to the other c1MB as I have only accounted for 15GB?
So in settings when I go to 'Storage' it is broken down into 2 sections, 'Device Memory' and 'USB Storage' now I find this screen a little bit confusing. So, is the 'USB Storage' the 11.06GB flash memory I have for general storage and the 'Device Memory' the 2GB (1.97GB) of flash memory for storing apps I download?
I find it strange that my phone says I have 1.97GB device memory (flash memory) total for apps, and my apps seem to be taking up 1.47GB but I only have 228MB available. That doesn't add up?? Even more confusing is the fact that when I try to download a 40MB app I am told 'Can't download to default location'!!
Also do I ever see what the 1GB of RAM is up to on my phone or is this managed secretly by Android?
Thanks for anyone willing to set me straight
*Bump*
Anyone willing to help pls
Ram can't be accesed by u that's what your device uses to store processes so u can't save files or anything on it but anyways assuming your on gingerbread to "see what your ram is up to" go into system settings/applications/running services this what u see is runnning processes stored on your ram
Your note then has system internal and external memory
System memory is where your rom and system apps are installed (platystore youtube etc) you can't access this unless your rooted
Internal memory is the memory u get with your phone where u can store pics movies files etc and install apps I don't own this device but i doubt that it allocates a section of internal memory for apps
Then there's USB or external storage which is your memory card or flash drive (yes u can do that) u can store apps (which have app2sd support unless your rooted then u can move everything) movies files whatevever you want

you are a lil bit lucky than me.. my 1.97GB device memory is only used around 0.8GB but the available space is only around 200mb:crying:... and the droid started to give me storage space running out error...

Yes I guessed that, but when I view RAM stats I get:
604MB used and 260MB free, yet I have 1GB RAM. Does anything add up memory wise on this phone?!
System memory is where your rom and system apps ...

Again I guessed there was an area reserved for Rocket ROM and the associated system apps, I assume this is called the system partition. And I believe this is 2GB!?

I seem to have 'device memory' which is some kind of App partition of about 2GB but again its telling me I have over 200MB free but when I try to install another app I am told I have run out of space!?
I also seem to have USB storage which is referring to the remaining general storage partition which is about 11GB which I can't install apps to.
Thank you for trying to answer my query but I'm afraid I'm none the wiser. I though it would be easy to find a Wiki on the device which would explain how the 16GB is partitioned up and used like a memory map but I can't find anything. And the figures don't add up.
Isn't anyone else curious?

Okay smart ass let me point out a few things....
I am a complete novice to Unix and how their filesystems are organised but I am trying.
Pointing me to a thread of partition tables with what I presume are hex values that I've never seen before is a bit too low level and confusing.
I am not asking for a programmers spec table for the Note memory just a simple breakdown of partitions, GB/MB sizing and what the purpose of the partition is?
And if you don't know enough to do that then don't bother posting because your not being helpful and your post has as much value as a troll
Actually my post was extremely helpful, and just saved you the bother to search for yourself. However 'mr. smart ass' assumed you had a bit of basic knowledge of the subject, which you just made clear isn't exactly the case.
So to try and tell it disney style :
Your phone has 1Gb of ram, used to run system and apps in realtime.
Android manages it and you can look at what is currently running and
if that makes you happy, even kill processes in taks manager.
Then your phone has flash memory, in general 16Gb, allthough 32Gb
devices exist.
Your Total 16Gb of memory actually has 12 partitions that each have
their proper reason of existence.
Number Size Name
1 21.0MB EFS: Holds device specific info like imei number
2 1311kB SBL1 : 1st bootloader, the devices uses this to boot
3 1311kB SBL2 : 2nd bootloader, see above
4 8389kB PARAM : Forgot what they put inside, guess you will have to read up.
5 8389kB KERNEL : Here goes your Hardware layer, drivers etc....
6 8389kB RECOVERY : here goes the little program to recover your phone when it's messed up
7 210MB CACHE : guess the name says it all
8 16.8MB MODEM : here goes the radio program for voice+data
9 893MB FACTORYFS : here go your android system files
10 2147MB DATAFS : here goes the data for your android system, like your apps
11 11.9GB fat32 UMS : your famous internal storage free to fill with disney movies
12 537MB HIDDEN : space reserved for samsung to put their bloatware
Hope the above is mashed enough to understand

[Q] How much internal memory can be cleaned?

Hello,
as I see there are some kernels and roms, but for me key question is how much internal memory can I gain after removing write protection (I couldn't find such information).
I know that it probably depends on how much I decide to delete, but I would be thankful if someone wrote:
- which applications take most of the space?
- what is "other" in memory management that takes almost 3GB?
Then I will know if rooting etc. is worth the trouble and warranty loss risk.
Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Chris
3 GB "Other" is the ROM of the phone, you basically have about 1 GB to use. You need a custom ROM to have more space, since in most of the custom ROMs the bloatware, the htc sence, htc keyboard etc are all deleted which frees up some space, but don't expect a lot.

Custom rom not help. Partition and data system has a fixed size. Deleting bloatware free up space on the system partition. Which is unusable.
Then its worse than I thought...

Wow, so it seems that in terms of free space rooting this phone gives you nothing. And that was my main motivation.
Is it possible to change partition size after freeing space? I mean some kind of gparted-thing.

Chris

Well, at least not something im willing to try, because the chances are to big that I brick my phone.
AFAIK, the partition table (partition size, place etc.) are stored in your hboot. Flashing a custom hboot is possible with S-OFF, but I don't know what I should edit in hboot to change the partition size., and I'm not really willing to try it.
factory reset does not help
Hi guys,
I made factory reset, but the "other" folder is still 2,88 GB out of 4 available after reboot. There are no pictures, videos, games or apps whatsoever, its fatory clean!!, and I don't know what this 2,88 GB data is?
I have a suspect on the /sys folder, which contains more than 500 thousands files! with folder like loop, mmcd...etc. see via ES file explorer. also not thumbnail found.
Any idea how to get rid of that data?
thanks.
ciao,
Rob.

Too much space being taken up in internal memory by 'System & other' category?

Hi All,
I am in possession of an M7 and have been surprised by how much of the internal memory is taken up just by Android and Apps; 23.67 of 32.00 Gigs have already been used, and I have not taken a single photo with my phone, uploaded music to it, etc.!
When I look in Settings > Storage I notice that most storage is being used by the 'System & other' category, which is currently consuming 19.39 Gigs!!
I have performed a little research on this before posting, and have turned of the 'Recycle Bin' in ES Explorer, removed same, and deleted the .estrongs folder using TWRP.
I can't see how my Apps could possibly take up so much space.
Can anybody assist with increasing my storage space?
Kind Regards,
Davo
That it's not normal, make a factory reset or reflash your rom.
Not normal. There are some storage analyzer apps that help you determine what precisely is using space, I use this one: com.google.android.diskusage
And if you cannot manually clean out the stuff, factory reset or flashing a ROM should fix things.. If the partitions are fked up, I have no idea how to fix that.

Yes, you're right. RUU is ultimate fix, but it would be nice if we could easily resize partitions.
Like, I have a debloated ROM, thrown out 2 GB of crap. So, now I have a lot of free unused space in /system partition, but no easy way to utlize it. I could of courze install more apps as system-apps, but..
Anyway, yes, RUU = Fix.
