[Q] How much internal memory can be cleaned? - HTC Desire 500

Hello,
as I see there are some kernels and roms, but for me key question is how much internal memory can I gain after removing write protection (I couldn't find such information).
I know that it probably depends on how much I decide to delete, but I would be thankful if someone wrote:
- which applications take most of the space?
- what is "other" in memory management that takes almost 3GB?
Then I will know if rooting etc. is worth the trouble and warranty loss risk.
Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Chris

3 GB "Other" is the ROM of the phone, you basically have about 1 GB to use. You need a custom ROM to have more space, since in most of the custom ROMs the bloatware, the htc sence, htc keyboard etc are all deleted which frees up some space, but don't expect a lot.

Custom rom not help. Partition and data system has a fixed size. Deleting bloatware free up space on the system partition. Which is unusable.

Then its worse than I thought...

Wow, so it seems that in terms of free space rooting this phone gives you nothing. And that was my main motivation.
Is it possible to change partition size after freeing space? I mean some kind of gparted-thing.

Chris

Well, at least not something im willing to try, because the chances are to big that I brick my phone.
AFAIK, the partition table (partition size, place etc.) are stored in your hboot. Flashing a custom hboot is possible with S-OFF, but I don't know what I should edit in hboot to change the partition size., and I'm not really willing to try it.

factory reset does not help
Hi guys,
I made factory reset, but the "other" folder is still 2,88 GB out of 4 available after reboot. There are no pictures, videos, games or apps whatsoever, its fatory clean!!, and I don't know what this 2,88 GB data is?
I have a suspect on the /sys folder, which contains more than 500 thousands files! with folder like loop, mmcd...etc. see via ES file explorer. also not thumbnail found.
Any idea how to get rid of that data?
thanks.
ciao,
Rob.

Rooted G1 with Cyanogen... only 14 MB internal Memory left?

Ok Guys, new to this site, hopefully y'all can help me out.
I recently rooted my G1, Installed the latest Cyanogen (4.7.2.1) and installed a theme ( Marks Theme). I dont have very many apps cause I didnt want to bog down the phone memory.....
I love the set up but it started running slower even after I started running the over clocker widget.
My phone is only showing 14.18 MB of free internal memory. I went through my applications installed and can only find around 25 MB being used from all installed apps ( including browser and messaging etc.)
I even tried to do a factory reset ( by going through the settings) and the factory reset is not working. It changed nothing.
Is there something that Im missing? I feel like I should have much more free memory.
I love the way my phone works and the set up, I just wish it had more free memory so that it would run faster.
Ive thought about doing the Apps2SD but I feel like I chould have much more memory on my phone even before doing something like that.
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
This is a question, and as such belongs in the Q&A section. You'll receive a better response to such things there.
The internal memory you're referring to is your /system partition.
It is where the entire OS is stored, basically. Which takes up, in your case, a whopping 55 MB (out of 70 MB).
If you //really// want more room, follow the Apps-2-SD tutorials out there. You'll get /plenty/ of space.
You could always upgrade to the new amon ra and then let it partition the sd card for you. Then you can have all that free phone storage for whatever it is.Bext time just try to restrict yourself from posting in wrong section
-Best regards

Thank you for the quick response. Is there a way to move this thread?
Also is there a better ROM that will take up less memory? I like this version but obviously it is wayy to large.
Anyone else running cyanogen 4.7.2.1 having this issue?
Most people using the Cyanogen ROM also utilize A2SD. Partition your SD card and you'll get more room.

There is no issue, you just don't have an ext partition ergo, all applications are installed to your phone which is why you have low phone memory.

Hello! app2SD will put the apps to ext...Then you will have more memory, why do you think people use it? To save even more money on geico?
Go here for the amon recovery...

Hi, first of this has nothing to do with development, should be in Q&A. Please remember for next time
OK, when you're on a custom ROM, don't use factory reset. Instead boot in to the recovery image and perform a wipe from there, and that's exactly what I'd suggest. Be prepared to loose everything stored on the phones memory, but you can use a backup app from the market for that... No you really should way more space than that, I can't really explain why...

The phone has two main partitions: /system and /data. It isn't /system that's filling up, it's /data (which makes sense...). The phone can't write to /system when it's unrooted, so it's not possible to store files there...
Everyone is trying to help but for a noob it can be a bit too much...4.2.7.1 is the best Rom available so keep that....RA Recovery is the best way to set up your memory card to accept your apps and keep them there freeing up a ton of space on the phone....simple way to fix is....Just format you sdcard with EXT3 using the RA-recovery v1.5.1 then once your card is formatted just reboot and Cyanogen's rom will move all the apps for you.....will not need to wipe any info on the phone that way...done it many times......Pm me if you need help!!!!

Young Money. Cash Money.
(partition sd card)
The non rooted standard T-Mobile rom is about the same size and will give you about the same amount of free space. There could be a more barebones rom but I think it's just a lot easier to run Apps2SD then to create a rom that might get you an extra 10mb of internal space. This is the fault of the internal memory on the phone being small. The only way to fix that is getting Apps2sd running which if you make a partion of 100mb should be enough to install all the apps you need. Getting a larger SD card for $10 is also another option so you wont have 1/10th of your sd cards storage gone.

You can always try different roms. CM is good and fast, but maybe try dwang 1.13 or Wesgarner version. wg is based on CM. I find it faster and more stable but this is just my opinion. if you back everything up with nandroid and some app like mybackup, you can flash all you want. you'll be able to get everything back with a nandroid/mybackup restore. try different stuff out and figure out what you like!

Xperia T Can't Free Up Device Memory

Guys, how can I free up device memory? Where can I find the files on internal memory inside a file manager? I see only SDcard 0 and sdcard 1. I have uninstalled and moved apps, deleted files and folder but the internal memory always remains the same, almost full.
Please help, my phone is becoming useless!
Thanks
Astralogic
Apps are installed at /data, your internal sdcard is located at /storage/sdcard0 and your external sdcard is at /storage/sdcard1
So your apps install by default on the /data partition, which has nothing to do with sdcards0/1, so you can only free space for apps by deleting other apps, but also from using some utilities like "Clean Master"(search it on google play. Maybe you would also like to take a look at this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712253

That's an excellent link I will be looking into, but my problem is that the memory is not freeing up, no matter how much I move/delete/uninstall.
Also where can I find this /data folder? There's one on my sdcard0 but it's empty.

You're probably removing small apps. If you use a root file manager, such as Root Explorer, you'll be able to see all the partitions on your phone, not only the storage partitions, and even delete things (which I don't recommend unless you know what you're doing) if you are rooted, which you obviously aren't.
If you are rooted, you can remove a lot more by removing lots of bloatware apps.
I'd also use some app to clear the cache; I've seen some apps gather a large amount of cache data, especially apps that deal with photos, such as Instagram. And a lot of people install an endless amount of apps not realizing that they will run out of space.
Of course, IMO, the best option is to root and get rid of stuff/apps you don't want/need; or even use apps such as GL2SD, or similar, to install apps and/or move app data to the external memory card.

Well the thing is I am rooted. I am planning on unrooting (so I can apply a firmware update that may fix this problem). I just never found rooting to be useful, the idea of Greenify rooted sound great but it's just the same as non-rooted version.
So if no one has any ideas I can try I'm just going to unroot, and download that firmware update. I've literally moved every single app to my sd card and I've cleared the cache, it does nothing.

if internal storage is a problem why dont you resize it so SDcard0 is smaller but internal memory for apps is bigger
i mean you did say your where rooted right?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712253
i followed the steps in that guide word for word and i now have huge space for apps and still enough internal storage for photo's etc and my music i keep on my external sd (SDcarrd1)
the only thing you have to remember to do is when flashing an image is to exclude the partition bit but i believe thats explained in the guide aswell

That actually looks too complex, I don't want to brick my phone. The problem seems like a bug anyway, the space isn't freeing up even if I make space so, I'll unroot and update the firmware.

Regardless of the fact that it might be a bug... without root:
1.- How would you monitor the alarms with BBS to know which app is chewing up your battery life?
2.- How would you mount /system as RW in order to change stuff, like say, the boot animation?
3.- How would you install a recovery to make complete backups that would save all your /data, say for instance, someone steals your phone, or you brick it while trying to do something, such as posted in the previous post?
4.- Greenify with root works automatically (without root, you depend on the widget, and manual interaction, not that I use Greenify anyway, just saying).
5.- How would you use any of these apps, to not only potentially solve your problem, but expand memory for installing apps to up to 16gb, without having to re-partition anything, as in the previous post?
6.- I could make this list longer...

Is there any way to get the firmware update without unrooting? If not, I might unroot, update, then root again. I might even install a custom rom (although I'm a bit nervous about it). A custom rom would make the firmware update completely useless correct? As the rom would replace the firmware right?

If you're talking about OTA update, then I'm pretty sure you need to be unrooted, and not have made any modifications to your /system. Mind you, there are no sure ways to root on 4.3 if your bootloader is locked.
You can't install OTA updates on anything except a Stock ROM.
Instead of doing the OTA update, you could just download the latest FTF for your phone model and flash it with Flashtools; it wouldn't matter if your BL is locked or unlocked, or if you're rooted or not, you'll end up with a Stock ROM.
Custom ROMs shouldn't scare you unless they are in very early stages of development, i.e., not stable, and I think there are more stable releases for the T.

I don't think it would matter, but I'd do it either before installing the ROM or after installing your ROM but before installing all your apps, that way there will be nothing to lose/restore. Then again, personally I wouldn't do it; given the tools that currently exist, resizing partitions is pointless to me. If I ever need to install app that use too much space, I'd just use Foldermount or GL2SD.

[Q] Internal Storage Missing 4GB

I am missing roughly 3 to 4GB of space on my internal storage. Long story short -- flashed cm11.0_golden.nova.20141127.ODIN_TWRP the first couple of tries it failed mainly due to me not knowing how to enter into recovery mode. After about 4 or 5 tries I figured it out and all was well. Then I notice a large chunk of my internal storage is missing. I enter recovery mode and format all internal storage. I gain a few hundred MB. I cannot see those missing GB of space at all. My best guess is that those first few unsuccessful attempts at flashing the rom are still there in the internal storage taking the space I am missing. Is there any way to repartition the internal storage? I have used all of the methods available to me with TWRP and have had no success in gaining that storage back. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Guessing you have S3 mini soo i have same "issue" it's actually the phone itself takes around 3-4 GB i have usable 4.64 gb and i have 8GB model.
So is this just the normal amount of space taken up by the system? And yes mine is an 8GB model also.
Yes guys it's normal if you have 4GB.
4GB for system and 4GB for user
When i look at how much storage total it lists 4.72GB. For available space it shows 4.27GB. Will the 4GB taken up by the system not be shown? I just figured that it would list close to 8GB total with X amount taken by system. Im pretty sure this is how it was before I flashed the phone.

Could it be the missing 4GB is the partition of the system? I am using stock ROM also can only access about 4GB for saving files and apps. Maybe the CM11 itself using 4GB for OS process and pre-installed/bloatware apps? Just my guest.
You can try to reach the missing space using 3rd party apps such as XDA File Manager. BUT, I wont dare to do anything to the 'hidden files', as I know it could damage your system. That's why they made it invisible to normal/average user (like me). Unless you know what and which files to be played with.

Too much space being taken up in internal memory by 'System & other' category?

Hi All,
I am in possession of an M7 and have been surprised by how much of the internal memory is taken up just by Android and Apps; 23.67 of 32.00 Gigs have already been used, and I have not taken a single photo with my phone, uploaded music to it, etc.!
When I look in Settings > Storage I notice that most storage is being used by the 'System & other' category, which is currently consuming 19.39 Gigs!!
I have performed a little research on this before posting, and have turned of the 'Recycle Bin' in ES Explorer, removed same, and deleted the .estrongs folder using TWRP.
I can't see how my Apps could possibly take up so much space.
Can anybody assist with increasing my storage space?
Kind Regards,
Davo
That it's not normal, make a factory reset or reflash your rom.
Not normal. There are some storage analyzer apps that help you determine what precisely is using space, I use this one: com.google.android.diskusage
And if you cannot manually clean out the stuff, factory reset or flashing a ROM should fix things.. If the partitions are fked up, I have no idea how to fix that.

Yes, you're right. RUU is ultimate fix, but it would be nice if we could easily resize partitions.
Like, I have a debloated ROM, thrown out 2 GB of crap. So, now I have a lot of free unused space in /system partition, but no easy way to utlize it. I could of courze install more apps as system-apps, but..
Anyway, yes, RUU = Fix.

Large System Memory?

Hi,
I recently found out that system memory is taking out 25GB of space from my phone. After googling, I still can't find a way of cleaning that. I understand this is where the important system OS files are storaged. I think these contain old update files from OTA which are not deleted after OS updates. Any ideas how to delete them without resetting?
I tweaked my note 8 a lot and really don't want to reset it because it will take so much time backing up and restoring plus you can't really back up the data of some apps and settings.

What's OSD? And are you talking about the drive space that the operating system is using? Because there's no way in hell that the phone has 25GB memory lol.. Mines using 17.2GB of space itself so yours doesn't sound like it has a problem and besides it only stores the OTA files until it's done flashing them and then gets rid of it..

I meant OCD lol. Took it out cos I think more people are going to be confused. It's the system memory section under storage of device maintainence. I have backed up everything now and reset. It was still 25gb afterwards. I was thinking it just had piles of OTA files that aren't deleted.
Will let you know when I finish with my reset from recovery mode. It just seems too much to me.

I meant OCD lol. Took it out cos I think more people are going to be confused. It's the system memory section under storage of device maintainence. I have backed up everything now and reset. It was still 25gb afterwards. I was thinking it just had piles of OTA files that aren't deleted.

The 25GB used was just the Android operating system and then whatever apps are installed.. it's not actually taking the memory/ ram away..
