[Q] Internal Storage Missing 4GB - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am missing roughly 3 to 4GB of space on my internal storage. Long story short -- flashed cm11.0_golden.nova.20141127.ODIN_TWRP the first couple of tries it failed mainly due to me not knowing how to enter into recovery mode. After about 4 or 5 tries I figured it out and all was well. Then I notice a large chunk of my internal storage is missing. I enter recovery mode and format all internal storage. I gain a few hundred MB. I cannot see those missing GB of space at all. My best guess is that those first few unsuccessful attempts at flashing the rom are still there in the internal storage taking the space I am missing. Is there any way to repartition the internal storage? I have used all of the methods available to me with TWRP and have had no success in gaining that storage back. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Guessing you have S3 mini soo i have same "issue" it's actually the phone itself takes around 3-4 GB i have usable 4.64 gb and i have 8GB model.

So is this just the normal amount of space taken up by the system? And yes mine is an 8GB model also.

Yes guys it's normal if you have 4GB.
4GB for system and 4GB for user

When i look at how much storage total it lists 4.72GB. For available space it shows 4.27GB. Will the 4GB taken up by the system not be shown? I just figured that it would list close to 8GB total with X amount taken by system. Im pretty sure this is how it was before I flashed the phone.

Could it be the missing 4GB is the partition of the system? I am using stock ROM also can only access about 4GB for saving files and apps. Maybe the CM11 itself using 4GB for OS process and pre-installed/bloatware apps? Just my guest.
You can try to reach the missing space using 3rd party apps such as XDA File Manager. BUT, I wont dare to do anything to the 'hidden files', as I know it could damage your system. That's why they made it invisible to normal/average user (like me). Unless you know what and which files to be played with.

But, what's the actual space occupied by the system files? We could try to resize "system partition" to gain some gb on "data partition"?

I'm also interested in repartitioning it, I successfully made it for a Galaxy S2 and my Note N7000... I used a specific pit file flashed with Odin... is there any pit file for GT-I8190 8 Gb? Thanks in advance!

Im not sure about CM11, but with Slimrom is about 1.23GB. You can see this using Titanium Backup in the overview.

[Q] use SD as main storage?

This is what I am currently doing: I made a 1GB ext4 partition, and i link all my apps to that using Link2SD.
This is working and i maintain about 100MB free on my internal memory. I have seen some other screenshots of ACE users, that somehow trick their phones to thinking that the Sd partition is the internal memory and everythign will automatically install there, and in system storage it reports the total space as that of the partition and not the ~100 MB.
how can i do this? what apps do I need

that looks confusing as hell. and he doesnt even use an ace. before i try it and may ruin something, has anyone tried this with an ace
Lol. What u describe there is what the amarullz script doing, swapping internal memory with sdcard and made phone think sdcard is the phone memory for app data.

LOL, just copy and paste script and set permission.....
dont need to read the whole thread
looking at his picture, it seems like he will be saving more files on the internal memory as opposed to what im doing now where everything is on SD. is that not counter intuitive

yes, but the creator said it will improve overall performance.
the more you install app = more dalvik cache
and one day, your internal memory become full.....of dalvik cache
so is there a way to still have everything on the SD card, but also have the phone think that the 1GB partition is the internal memory

[Q] How is memory managed on my Note?

I have to be honest and say I am a bit baffled when I look at the 'Storage' breakdown on my Note. So I have a few questions as to how RAM and flash memory work together.
From looking at some threads on the forums here I understand of the 16GB of flash memory on my Note :
2GB is reserved for the ROM
2GB is reserved for apps, actually my phone says I have 1.97GB
The rest (11.06 GB) as general storage e.g. music, movies, documents, etc.
Wondering what happened to the other c1MB as I have only accounted for 15GB?
So in settings when I go to 'Storage' it is broken down into 2 sections, 'Device Memory' and 'USB Storage' now I find this screen a little bit confusing. So, is the 'USB Storage' the 11.06GB flash memory I have for general storage and the 'Device Memory' the 2GB (1.97GB) of flash memory for storing apps I download?
I find it strange that my phone says I have 1.97GB device memory (flash memory) total for apps, and my apps seem to be taking up 1.47GB but I only have 228MB available. That doesn't add up?? Even more confusing is the fact that when I try to download a 40MB app I am told 'Can't download to default location'!!
Also do I ever see what the 1GB of RAM is up to on my phone or is this managed secretly by Android?
Thanks for anyone willing to set me straight
*Bump*
Anyone willing to help pls
Ram can't be accesed by u that's what your device uses to store processes so u can't save files or anything on it but anyways assuming your on gingerbread to "see what your ram is up to" go into system settings/applications/running services this what u see is runnning processes stored on your ram
Your note then has system internal and external memory
System memory is where your rom and system apps are installed (platystore youtube etc) you can't access this unless your rooted
Internal memory is the memory u get with your phone where u can store pics movies files etc and install apps I don't own this device but i doubt that it allocates a section of internal memory for apps
Then there's USB or external storage which is your memory card or flash drive (yes u can do that) u can store apps (which have app2sd support unless your rooted then u can move everything) movies files whatevever you want

I seem to have 'device memory' which is some kind of App partition of about 2GB but again its telling me I have over 200MB free but when I try to install another app I am told I have run out of space!?
I also seem to have USB storage which is referring to the remaining general storage partition which is about 11GB which I can't install apps to.
Thank you for trying to answer my query but I'm afraid I'm none the wiser. I though it would be easy to find a Wiki on the device which would explain how the 16GB is partitioned up and used like a memory map but I can't find anything. And the figures don't add up.

Okay smart ass let me point out a few things....
I am a complete novice to Unix and how their filesystems are organised but I am trying.
Pointing me to a thread of partition tables with what I presume are hex values that I've never seen before is a bit too low level and confusing.
I am not asking for a programmers spec table for the Note memory just a simple breakdown of partitions, GB/MB sizing and what the purpose of the partition is?
And if you don't know enough to do that then don't bother posting because your not being helpful and your post has as much value as a troll
Actually my post was extremely helpful, and just saved you the bother to search for yourself. However 'mr. smart ass' assumed you had a bit of basic knowledge of the subject, which you just made clear isn't exactly the case.
So to try and tell it disney style :
Your phone has 1Gb of ram, used to run system and apps in realtime.
Android manages it and you can look at what is currently running and
if that makes you happy, even kill processes in taks manager.
Then your phone has flash memory, in general 16Gb, allthough 32Gb
devices exist.
Your Total 16Gb of memory actually has 12 partitions that each have
their proper reason of existence.
Number Size Name
1 21.0MB EFS: Holds device specific info like imei number
2 1311kB SBL1 : 1st bootloader, the devices uses this to boot
3 1311kB SBL2 : 2nd bootloader, see above
4 8389kB PARAM : Forgot what they put inside, guess you will have to read up.
5 8389kB KERNEL : Here goes your Hardware layer, drivers etc....
6 8389kB RECOVERY : here goes the little program to recover your phone when it's messed up
7 210MB CACHE : guess the name says it all
8 16.8MB MODEM : here goes the radio program for voice+data
9 893MB FACTORYFS : here go your android system files
10 2147MB DATAFS : here goes the data for your android system, like your apps
11 11.9GB fat32 UMS : your famous internal storage free to fill with disney movies
12 537MB HIDDEN : space reserved for samsung to put their bloatware
Hope the above is mashed enough to understand

FACTORY RESET SHOULD FIX THAT. POSSIBLY THE MOUNT POINT CHANGE MADE THE PREVIOUSLY INSTALLED APP EXIST, BUT UNSEEN.
OR IF YOUR MIND IS AS STRONG AS YOUR CAPS LOCK, TRY MOVING YOUR PREVIOUS ROM'S INTERNAL TO THE CURRENT ROM'S MOUNT POINT.

I second that. had this happen to me.
I've had something similar, but for me it was incomplete downloads being cached in the the internal storage - a few roms, an attempted firmware download and there was 1.5GB of stuff that I couldn't immediately locate.
One of my favourite utility apps is called Disk Usage - this gives you a visual representation of what is taking up space on your SD cards (so bigger files/folders are large on the screen), I forget the exact name of the folder but thanks to this app I could quickly work out what was taking up so much space.
And some versions of CWM do seem to hide the back up somewhere not obvious - my average back ups are betwen 1.5 and 2GB so one or two of these will eat up most of your internal storage.

[Q] free space disapeared

Hi,
On the first screens, i've no free space on the phone storage and i've about 3 or 4 apps that need just less than 1gb... What does mean the 4.31gb "other" ?
What can i do to fix that ?
As you can see, part of my application disapeared because of the way in the storage changed...
For example, when i take a picture it's located in storage/emulated/0/picture/screenshot and before it was simply picture/screenshot.
I tried to do a factory reset but nothing change after that...
Thanks in advance

It seems like you have just under 1GB of free space on phone storage.

Ok. Thank you very much that is all I needed to know.
It seems like there is nothing you can do to fix that.
Your applications disappeared because you moved them to the sdcard, but something else also happened or you just need to restart your phone so they will reappear. If you remove your sdcard after moving them to the sdcard, they can appear greyed out like that. There can also be a problem with your sdcard and that is why your apps appear like that and your pictures save on your phone.
Try to change your Primary storage by going into Settings-Storage-Primary storage and set it to Automatic switching. You may have to restart your phone.
I really think there is a problem with your sdcard, ranging from a minor problem all the way up to it is not working anymore.

First, thanks for your answer !
I know there were a part of "other" but this part was not more than about 2 gb before. I don't think the problem is my sd card cause the application i showed you on the screenshot are the only one i did not move ... For example, i had Hearthstone moved and it steel on my sd card.
The picrture was just an example, all my memory moved to emulated/0
And the same for settings/storage/primary is the same than ever
When i plugged my phone with usb to my computer, the internal storage were about 7.60 gb,... And look what i can see now
I can't download what i want with that...
All of that happen when i followed a tutorial to upgrade RAM with ROEHSOFT. I was needing to partition my EXTERNAL storage, what i did. I make a swap part about 3gb and the rest for the storage in fat32. After the partition, i had my 2 part but my internal storage change like what you see on these pictures. I think partition is now in my internal storage & that why the default internal storage way changed... But i have no idea to fix it... Can't use backup, can't part internal storage again, can't factory reset cause it has no effect after reboot...

I think you should delete the apps that are showing that they were on your sdcard then try to reinstall them. They should be in Settings-Apps.
I just looked up the ROEHSOFT RAM Expander (SWAP) app. I have never heard of this app before, but it had this as a note:
Note: only FAT32 Drives can be used for Swap. When you are using a Partition then use fat32 format or swap otherwise it will not be visible in the Drivelist!
It may not be working right because you need to use a FAT32 partition for the SWAP/RAM. If needed you can use Aparted to format the sdcard then use ROEHSOFT again to create SWAP. I found this tutorial. Is this how you did it or something different?

Where did you get CWM from? Did you use this recovery? As far as I know, there is no ROM for 64-bit, you cannot use the Cricket/Boost/etc. Those are just for 32-bit. There is a kernel.

Oh, ok, I didn't know that CWM was available for the 64-bit version. Thanks for that info.
As far as I know our ROMs are KitKat based, which only supports 32-bit devices. It will be good when Lollipop hits our devices as it supports 64-bit devices, but I'm not so sure if the ROMs that were built for 32-bit devices will work for a 64-bit device. You would have to ask the respective developers of those ROMs. My guess is no.

Too much space being taken up in internal memory by 'System & other' category?

Hi All,
I am in possession of an M7 and have been surprised by how much of the internal memory is taken up just by Android and Apps; 23.67 of 32.00 Gigs have already been used, and I have not taken a single photo with my phone, uploaded music to it, etc.!
When I look in Settings > Storage I notice that most storage is being used by the 'System & other' category, which is currently consuming 19.39 Gigs!!
I have performed a little research on this before posting, and have turned of the 'Recycle Bin' in ES Explorer, removed same, and deleted the .estrongs folder using TWRP.
I can't see how my Apps could possibly take up so much space.
Can anybody assist with increasing my storage space?
Kind Regards,
Davo
That it's not normal, make a factory reset or reflash your rom.
Not normal. There are some storage analyzer apps that help you determine what precisely is using space, I use this one: com.google.android.diskusage
And if you cannot manually clean out the stuff, factory reset or flashing a ROM should fix things.. If the partitions are fked up, I have no idea how to fix that.

Yes, you're right. RUU is ultimate fix, but it would be nice if we could easily resize partitions.
Like, I have a debloated ROM, thrown out 2 GB of crap. So, now I have a lot of free unused space in /system partition, but no easy way to utlize it. I could of courze install more apps as system-apps, but..
Anyway, yes, RUU = Fix.
