[Q]Refurbished Phone Screen Washed out??? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I needed to get a replacement phone because my original HTC one had purple and pink hues at night. So I got the new phone and it has HTC sense 6 on it and the battery is better and everything but I noticed something was off. When I compared my old phone and new phone, the screens were really different when it came to whites and blues. Websurfing and facebook was a lot duller, washed out and had a yellow tint on it. It was not horribly significant but I definitely noticed it and was wondering if this was a problem with the screen and phone itself or was this just something that was the case with sense 6 (which I apparently can't get on my old HTC one for some reason). Otherwise I will have to ask for another replacement. Any help would be REALLY appreciated.

this is normal and this was already discussed many times here. There are slight color differences between some display assembly used on the M7

Ya I have heard about the different screens used in assembly before actually. The link you sent me has a pretty great and detailed analysis of it but some of it kind of goes over my head lol. So I am guessing there is nothing I can do to change that or request a particular type of unit? Also my new phone makes a strange popping noise when on speaker phone as well which did not happen before. I assume that is not normal?

[Q] Stuck pixel/s - fix, return, or live with?

Hi guys,
So technically I'm on my third HTC One, the first bulged at the USB port with a scuff, and the second was opened in store and had similar bulging so I refused it.
The third seemed good, and so I took it. I went home, set it all up, checked for bad pixels and it was grand. So i set it up, installed all my stuff, unlocked the bootloader and rooted etc.
So, dial forward a week, and I notice a brighter spot on a white background, right on the edge of the screen, on the left. I'd guess its a few pixels, as it is kinda triangular, and bigger than just one I believe. Using a pixel tester tool, they only show up on green (looks more white) and white (looks brighter), not on black, red or blue. So, I'm guessing its a group of sub-pixels.
It's one of those things - it doesn't bother me that much except I know its there, so I get drawn to it, particularly on white browser screens. I've briefly tried a pixel fixer app but it didn't fix it. So, I need some advice really, I love the phone now that I have (had) one that was perfect, but this has disappointed me. I'd hate to get back into a cycle of more returns for more issues like overhang, camera etc, if they even have any in stock. So, has anyone any advice on a possible fix, as that would be the best solution?
If not, given I've unlocked the bootloader and rooted and stuff, am I likely to encounter some resistance trying to exchange this? I got it from Three, and I intend to call round to them shortly to talk about it, but wanted some advice first.
Thanks for any help,
Matt
If it isn't too annoying I say live with it. You'll get used to it eventually.
If you replace it again there's a good chance you'll get one with a worse problem.
Replaced
In the end, I went with the replacement - sat in the store and checked off a list of the common faults I've seen haha, from aluminium quality to video hissing!
Think I've finally got a great one; it had a different batch number, HT32WW, as compared to HT338W for both the previous two. Very pleased! I can hopefully now relax - bar any more sudden dead pixels!
I'll add that Three were really great about it, very apologetic, I dunno why they have a reputation for poor customer service, maybe their call centres? Anyway, yeah, kudos to them!
Anybody saying live with it is a total idiot. Its like buying a car and saying it has a crack on the window but live with it. If its broken, change it! Its free and you deserve a problem free device for the price.
Yeah, and given that attitude I had Amazon send me three devices in a row, and none of them is free of dead pixels (no gaps etc. nonetheless). If you're going for pure you might have to stay strong to finally receive the one you've been waiting for .

Screen problem?

Hello, I have seen that my htc one screen have a light leak on the op of the screen, I thought that is a problem of my HTC One, but I have seen in internet that many Ones have this problem, so Can you see that your one have this problem?
Images:
PD: It is visible only in light colors or white.
Thanks and sorry for my english.
According to you (and maybe the other ONE user) I think I'm lucky because my screen doesn't have this issue..
but I got two deadpixels in less then a month since I bought it
it's called backlight bleeding, i have that too, there is nothing you can do about it..
I have spoken with HTC Chat and they say me that I can send the One to the SAT, but I am worried because I have seen another One in a shop of my city which has the same problem.
Thanks
Anyone has this problem too?
Idon't have this issue. Good luck

I have that too, it looks the same, even the same pattern (two gaps where the sensors and camera is).
But to be honest, it is not noticeable at all, only when looking at bright colors from a high angle. Maybe the level of bleed varies from unit to unit, and if it's bothering you very much then RMA it.
Don't get me wrong, I am very picky about this kind of stuff, If I found a single badpixel I would go bonkers over it. However looking at what kind of issues people are having with their Ones I wouldn't complain at something like this.
Reported here as well, but my One is fine

I'm the OP of the linked thread. Wanted to return it, but my shop didn't think it was a good enough reason for an exchange.

You are looking at a shallow angle at the edge of the screen.... do you see this when you look at the screen straight on..... if not then there's no problem.

Not really, but compared to the other side, it is quite bad!

So what's the deal with the camera red tint?

I have 3 HTC Ones (all sprint) in my possession at the moment. Mine has the red tint problem. The other 2 (wife's + wife's insurance replacement.. she just broke the screen ($first time ever using phone insurance, thank god we had it$)) both seem to be fine - no red issue.
All 3 phones started with 1.31.651.2, both mine and the broken screen phone have been updated to 3.04.651.2 The new replacement is still 1.31.651.2. We've had these phones for just about 2 weeks (embarrassing, we weren't even a week into enjoying these before she dropped it..). Anywho..
I did some camera experimenting tonight to find out a few things, here are the results:
Camera issue exists with both 1.31 and 3.04. I saw some posts about people thinking the update had something to do with it, but I don't think so. The phone w/ red had it both pre and post 3.04. The normal phone has been normal both pre and post 3.04. The 3rd phone is still on 1.31.. I've left it alone as a sort-of control phone.
Heat doesn't matter (maybe if you melted things tho.. ). My phone would exhibit red regardless of waking 'cold' fresh from sleep or after heavy usage where it would really start to warm the hand. Both the normal phone and the control phone would be fine following the same pattern.
ISO 100 doesn't fix things, it just lowers the ISO enough that the camera software? stops trying to add gain/noise to the signal. Taking [roughly] the same picture between all 3 cameras at iso 100, the red one is still noticeably red tinged when compared to the other 2 phones, they're all just much darker so it's less noticeable esp if you didn't have anything to compare to.
Full wiping/resetting (incl media/data) doesn't make a difference.
Unrelated to the camera and this is kind of a nitpick, updating to 3.04 really slowed the UI down. It's still extremely fast, but it's kine of like things run at 30fps now where as 1.31 everything was 60fps. The best repeatable example is scrolling when unlocking the phone. 1.31 is silky 60fps smooth, 3.04 is crossfire/sli microstuttery. Reset/wipe doesn't make a difference.
Attaching a few boring pics.. excuse the boringness The 2 normal phone pics are pretty much the same so I've only uploaded 1 to compare w/ the red phone. Have a bunch more, but these pretty much typify what is going on.
So is this a hardware defect? What's the best way to deal with it? I don't mind shipping it to HTC and go w/o for a bit to get it addressed, but I do want to make sure it's dealt with. I'd also be pretty steamed to get either a refurb or used phone in return, because we bought these new less than 2 weeks ago (Costco).
Even though we are technically still in the 14day return window, I'm pretty sure we can't return the phones and try to switch to another Sprint offering because of insurance being used already (sigh), but that's fine - we do like the phones and want to keep them.
How do I get this fixed?
Thanks!
*edit* Contacting HTC via http://www.htc.com/us/contact/email/ just gave me a 403 Forbidden error, so this is already starting off in a bad light (pun?).
*edit2* Resubmit and got through, I'll keep this thread updated as I find out more. (I haven't been able to find any concrete info regarding all of this, so maybe this will come in handy for someone in a similar situation at some point)

Yeah I have this problem as well. Had it since I got the phone (before 4.3 update). I just try to not take pictures in low light even though that's what the camera is for. Hopefully it's a software problem and they fix it but I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem

4.3 update fixed that. If you still have it after 4.3, your device is defective.

Hi guys i just bought a g flex today and first and foremost it is an amazing phone. There is a couple of things that i have noticed which would help me if anyome would know how to sort them.
1. There is a hravy screen burn. I know this is a common thing but wondered if anything can sort it.
2. No update for 4.4 i know this phone is a little old but you would still ecpect an update of sorts but nothing since the release.
2. The blacks on this phone just are ent black they have a grey hue and whites do too. And there are very small dots all over the screen. Now i came from a nexus 5 which had a FHD display and this doesnt but come on it shouldnt be that noticable to see eaxh pixel.
If there are any solutions to any of these problems they would be highly appreciated.

1. Do you have permanent burn-in or suffer temporary burn-in?
2. It is possible to flash 4.4 yourself if you are feeling a little adventurous and can find files. There are guides on the forum.
3. It's not even black in a dark room? Or are you talking about the reflections making the blacks appear grey? Amoled white won't be as white as on LCD.
Regarding the pixels/noise/grain that you see, it seems to float around different revisions of the screen. I've seen two Flexes. Mine and another. Mine does not suffer from it. I can hardly see it even if I look up close. While on the other one it was VERY visible and the only thing I could see all the time. This screen also heavily suffered from temporary image retention which mine does not.

1. Its temporary burn in
2. U ended up flashing 4.4.2 just couldnt find the tot file but did in the end.
3. I mean it is seriously grainy. Is there any way of telling which model has it and which doesnt

You probably have the first model which was as grainy as the other one I saw myself. It was seriously grainy and unbearable.
Try dialing 3845#*955# (replace 955 with your model number). Then "settings/version info/HW Version". Do you see rev1.0 somewhere?

Hmm same as mine then. But the screen must be different. I've seen how grainy it is and the one I have now I barly can see the grain even if I look close for it. So it's a none issue on my phone.

1 but i guess you have to be lucky becuase all three had thr issue. I toon the first one back because of the burn in issue but the econd one seems to be free of that now also the 4.4.2 update helped. Is there any way of improving it. Any mods of drivers i can install.

No. No other than software updates from the manufacturer. Hmm maybe I was really lucky with mine. Would like to look at more physically. But they are hard to come by just like that no stores have them in my area.

Right side for me. Still, just because it's faded doesn't mean it's over. I wanted to unlock the bootloader, but I can't go voiding the warrantee when I may end up needing it.
I'll probably return it and wait for the US release of the G 5G equivalent.
If all it needed was a break-in, that should've been done at the factory.

I am in the same situation. I see the green tint, but it isn't as bad as when I first turned it on.
I posted a new thread over in the Q&A with a poll about it. The moto support forums are starting to buzz with folks complaining, and the best buy reviews are starting to roll in with photos. Moto may have a slightly big problem on their hand.
Mine did the same after just 1 week, i send it to the service and they said they ordered the hardware for replacement, couldnt return the phone and get my money back
UK model (single sim) MOTP-EDGBLK - same issue.
Only apparent when the brightness is below 50%.
I received #4 replacement
This time I noticed some changes in hardware
The screen looks OK for 18 days
Nothing funny so far
I returned mine back to Amazon and bought another - after 3 days, same issue.
Gave up, got a refund and bought a Pixel 5.
Such a shame, I really liked the Moto Edge design, size and battery life. Unfortunately it seems that Motorola can't make phones, had a screen related issue on my Moto X Force a few years back too, seems like Motorola have not improved at all.

I assume it's difficult to have good yields due to the waterfall design. There could be a relatively high failure for this type of design.
It's funny how my 2nd Edge is exhibiting the same green tint. I was so sure I could put this behind me.

The waterfall design isn't new though. Other OEMs have made similar style displays (Samsung, OPPO etc) and none then have such a high failure rate like this.

Whatever the source is, Moto is clearly struggling to obtain good panels. Reviews say the screen is great but they fail so easily. It's beyond strange.

Green tint seems to come before purple streaks and double images, no? Look at reviews on best buy, green tint is the least of your worries.
Also you could use swift installer to make certain apps black. I only noticed the green tint cause I happened to have another phone next to the edge.
3 days in from bestbuy retail stock, box has a 20 october 2020 date on it. No screen issues. Of course, when I have the light theme enabled there are often situations where I can see a slight greenish/grey hue to the edge as it begins to curve. That's just optics and not at all as some of the pics I have seen. Sweet ride so far.
As of December 8th, no more purple blotches, which has shadows of the notification bar, and cutout. Hasn't happened in about 2 weeks. I did notice, with the latest build(October), that the battery drains a touch faster. Still don't know if it's curing of screen materials, or update.
Screen is still perfect after full 8 weeks
