Earlier this year dual SIM support was added to cm: https://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_frameworks_opt_telephony-msim
Is there anyone working on this for omni? What is the challenge integrating it into the omni tree? Does it require a lot of modification of frameworks and telephony?

It's a massive amount of effort that has a high risk of breaking things, and 0 devices currently supported by Omni use it.
The only devices anyone is working on that might benefit from this are Moto G (and most of its maintainers just don't have the time for it and also don't have XT1033 variants) and possibly Oppo R819 - but R819 has all sorts of other issues.
That does not sound too motivating.
On Google I/O a dual SIM Android One phone was shown. Hopefully that means AOSP L/One will come with native Dual SIM support.

Please excuse the noob here.
I have my LG L90.
I plan to root my phone using the root guide here on XDA.
However being a noob I'm afraid to root.
The main reason for that being I hear dual sim phones do not have good custom roms like CM11 or their upcoming androidL rom.
For example they have only ROMs for D415 here at XDA and that too has missing stuff like front camera !!
A friends phone got bricked and I'm pretty scared to put a single SIM rom of D415 into my D410. What will happen then?
Will my device get bricked or be very buggy because it is a dual sim?
Plz help

As far as I know (D405n here) these roms are universal. I use cm11 built for 410 (which has not got NFC) and the bug is I don't have front camera working (410 users have) and also no NFC. If you're going to use rom for single sim, your dual sim support will most likely not work, other than that might be little differences. But of course get sure you can use 415 rom for 410

The NFC not working IMHO is understood, but Isn't something like the front camera not working a major issue?
Where do you get a good ROM for D410? The rom I saw didnt have front camera support even for D410.
(I understood CM group doesnt release rom for each phone)

I am pretty sure front camera is working for 410 in quarx's cm11. I think he mentioned it does work in 410, but it doesn't in other versions since he doesn't own them. But then again, find yourself (it should be written somewhere on the few last pages in the rom thread)
It bugs me how hard it is for a phone to have a stable ROM.
Well maybe its really hard, coding these.
Ok I definetly will find out.
Thank you.

The L90 has only been on the market for 5 or 6 months. We've had custom ROMs for at least the past 3 months. There are only a small group, 4 people, working on ROMs for this device. We all have lives away from XDA too. I've literally dumped every free minute, and then some, in to developing my ROM for the D415.
As you stated, CM doesn't and cannot support every device out there. Myself, I technically don't have the free time to support ROM building but somehow I'm managing. The only way CM will support this device is for someone to be appointed a maintainer, by CM, for this device.
I can't see how the VGA front camera is more important than the rear main camera but that's just me. Also the D415 models, and any L90 variant with out 'n' in the model name, does not have NFC. So "LG-D4**n" is a NFC enabled device. "LG-D4**hn" is a dual-sim NFC enabled device.
Quarx is building ROMs for dual sim devices, I'm building for single sim devices.

Totally understand.
L90 isn't even popular, with a rating 0.8 compared to 7.0 of LG G2.
CM won't appoint a maintainer.
Should have bought a flagship device
I really appreciate the work you guys are doing.
Imagine what will happen when android L is out? People will start demanding the ROM almost instantly. Demand will always be higher.
Tough times.

Part of the problem is in what you just said right there the demand is out there but nobody wants to take the time to do it themselves.
Each device no matter if its a flagship or a non flagship device has many different variants each variant has its own quirks and its own needs the four people we currently have working on our devices are doing it in their own free time this is not what they do for a living everything they do for us is awesome everything everything fix yes there are bugs there are bugs in the stock rom on a phone so don't ever expect anything to be perfect for the cameras in camera I can understand the front facing camera why do you really need it? Do you need it desperately Skype somebody?
@shinobisoft does this means your rom is compatible with the d405n?

It can be. But when I release the next update, since the D415 doesn't have NFC or a FM reciever, NFC will be disabled and FM Radio.apk won't exist either. In order for me to support other devices, I must also build a kernel for them.
Let me work the bugs out of CM11 for the D415, then I'll look in to building ROMs for the other single sim variants.

With the introduction of Lollipop 5.1 dual sim now has native Android support.
Up until now different manufacturers implemented this function in their own way. I've had other dual sim (DS) phones that had different ports of CM but the DS function never worked on them. Always just one sim card!
I'm just wondering if in the future we will have CM versions that can be ported and support DS without issue, and how close is that future away?
It is possible (but unlikely) that we could see a future official Samsung firmware of 5.1 for our device that uses the now native DS support instead of their own version of it.
This would make porting a CM firmware with native DS support much easier I'd imagine.
Any thoughts people?

So today Motorola India launched a new variant of X4 in India. Bumping the RAM from 3 & 4 GB to 6GB with same 64GB storage.
The main highlight is the phone comes with Oreo out of box and it supports Treble..
Now see what Motorola has to say about new X4 Variant -
There don't seem to be any other differences but the RAM amount, and the fact that the handset ships with Oreo by default. Motorola does say that there are a few interface tweaks pertinent to the fresh X4, but the other models will eventually get them, too. After that the key difference will be the extra 2GB of RAM.
So what is Motorola is talking here abt that the older models will eventually get it..? Is it the treble support.?
If they don't enable treble on the original moto x4, they will be loosing out on many potential customers who care about the latest updates and ROMs. I think that not enabling treble will be a huge mistake on Motorola's part. I'm also starting to get annoyed with the huge market catering to India...
Honestly, I think there's 0 chance it will happen, sorry.
Do you guys think its possible to flash the stock rom from a new moto x4 to an old one ? That could be a way to enable treble for the "old" devices

I am curious to take a look at the firmware from this device. Does anyone have it?
No one should hold their breath for a "Treble Update" from Motorola... it may require repartitioning the device and doing that via OTA would be quite a challenge and be too risky for them.
That said, I would still like to see the vendor/HAL implementation, and especially check out partitioning. From an efficiency/cost standpoint it would be surprising to see any major differences in structure since that would require Motorola to have a dev team just for one new variant.
But even if the devices are identical that does not mean we could simply flash the Treble firmware. There would seem to be an intermediate step that would require partitioning. It may be beyond the scope of our existing tools. These may be changes that could only be made with Motorola proprietary software.
But an interesting development, nonetheless...
Just did a little reading, and it seems that the hardware IS different than the original X4...specifically the SoC which is SDM636 running custom Kyro architecture vs. our SDM630

Excellent... can't wait to see under the hood
I don't think so, but it IS possible.
When Oreo came out, it was important for Motorola to update their phones quickly to Oreo;
in order to look good compared to other brands.
Implementing Treble would take more time; but once implemented would make it easier for them to provide faster security updates in the future.
So it's a possibility that the next security update in january or february, may include Treble.
The moto X4 is due to receive Security updates until April 2019, so Treble might make sense to Motorola.
But there's definately no way to know for sure.
But isn't 6 GB just a variant of Moto x4, so probably it also doesn't have project treble enabled.

The slow development is because of the A/B partition scheme, if you look other phones that uses the same partition system it'll be the same, it's Google "fault".
Last I checked, all devices running Oreo have to have Treble. That is why everyone was mad at HTC for shipping new phones with Nougat. It especially makes sense for the Android One variant because the have to get timely updates out, which they have. It would be off for the 6gb to have it and no others because Google requires every
Today it has been announced in the XDA that redmi Note 4 got its project treble compatibility and it is a full project treble compatibility.
So when is Moto G5 s going to receive any kind of project treble compatibility but I think that it is relative the easier than the Xiaomi devices because it has all the resources available and I don't think there is any kind of heavy modification from the Motorola side as Xiaomi
But motorola does not offer enough sources to enable trebel i think..
What is project treble anyway, care to explain?

There's an additional abstraction layer / API between the OS and the hardware drivers,
that make it easier to update the Android OS across different vendors with the same chipset (SoC) and hardware features (and long-term probably also across newer Android and Kernel versions, not sure though)
In essence you should be able to run an AOSP build from e.g. Huawei on Sony phones, LG, etc. as long as the components are the same,
meaning: e.g. phone calling, WiFi, etc. all should be working out of the box after installing that, camera and specific features (e.g. dedicated sound DAC) might be a different story though and require adjustments (not sure how that is realized in detail with Treble)
The thing with Project Treble is that it has to be considered right from the start, meaning there need to be (2 ?) additional partitions for updates available:
Partition A (current),
Partition B (new)
So that means for existing device it would involve re-partitioning and/or adding additional partitions to make a device Project Treble "ready",
which is practically impossible since this cannot be achieved with OTA updates.
I've read that older Huawei (or other vendor, Xiaomi ?) has this experimentally added (community ?) but this would require TWRP and/or custom manual intervention through recovery
and most people aren't able to do this - so it's unrealistic that existing device without Project Trouble could be "upgraded", retrofitted through that means
that's at least the superficial level that I got to understand from the discussion from other Sony devs
Hope that helps
Anything that can be developed for this phone have to be figured out very fast because Moto is going to release the G6 family very soon and as you know that once a new family gets released the older family gets less attention and gradually dies over the time and sadly I can see that there are no dedicated developers for this phone so the community has to take the responsibility to do anything possible for this phone as soon as possible.
Respected developers, we custom Rom users solely depend on you & your efforts whenever we are fooled by multi millionaire companies like Sony, Samsung... By stopping the updates for any device whenever they feel. Its you guys, who keeps the device and our hopes alive here @ xda.
Respected devs,I've a request to make on behalf of all the Indian users With this device.it has been a long time since a telecom company RELIANCE JIO,introduced voLTE in India. But among the z series devices, it's only this device which hasn't received fully functional voLTE feature. As a disadvantage, due to lack of voLTE,we have following genuine problems::
1.we can't use JIO SIM CARDS ( cheapest service provider in India)
2. If we want to use them, we have to use an app JIO4G VOICE,which needs to kept ON & FUNCTIONAL all the time, we can't even hibernate it..... Our battery juice is sucked up by this app.
3.We have to keep our MOBILE DATA -- always ON, inorder to receive calls.... Which again consumes battery.
Through this post,I would like to request each & every developer for this device to please give some amount of your valuable time in creating a zip or rom,,,by which we can have FULLY FUNCTIONAL voLTE in our device.
Any help will be a real blessing for us all.
Thanks alot.

Devs are very few for this device @Quarx, @ olivier, @venkat kamesh and another one @machao.thats it. Out of them I don't think anyone is solely interested in z3+/z4. As their primary developments are for some other device. What we get, is just left over part of their hard work.
M-Rom and Lineage Os are only 2 currently maintained roms/threads for this device.M-Rom is not maintained by the developer himself at xda,as he @machao) updates his thread @ bbs.gfan only.
Without voLTE, we are really suffering in India as we are not able to use the cheapest simcard.
