[Q] Battery Life? - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, thinking of buying this 'Exceptional Phone' My brother has a Moto G, and I noticed how much better the battery was as compared to my Nexus 4. If anyone here has bought the phone, could they please specify/make a comment on the battery life? I know you guys musn't have had it a long time, but seeing it's a 5" screen with 2070mah, I'd like to know whether it's around the same/better/worse as compared to the old Moto G. Any Screen on Times under Battery Info will be much appreciated, thanks

U need to wait abit...i m yet to receive my moto g

12-14 hrs on a normal usage..

Wow! Yeah I just read on a review on expertreviews.co.u too that the battery lasted for 30minutes extra than the old Moto G.
ThanKs, I'm gonna go for this phone :good:

few cons noted so far
Hi, I am from India,
About Moto G 2nd gen 2014,
In India phone is available through flipkart only :silly:
ppl on flipkart review section,
complaining about charging time to get 100% charged, which is 3hrs+
so few points are noted as :
1. wall mount charger shipped with this phone heats up like a molten rock.
2. there is no data cable in the box.
3. few reported that they smelled something like plastic is burning.
4. battery last for 12hrs max on wifi use. i.e. twice a day charging
Is anyone here has the same experience?

->battery charges up in 2 nd half hours..if u use it continuously while charging..then it would take 3hrs or more..
->i didn't face heating issues of charger
->cable wasn't there even in previous moto g..
->no smell
->u cannot expect more from a 2070mah battery as the screen is now 5inch..if u go out in the morning with full charge..u can easily end it up till night with normal usage..

thank you for point to point reply..
what about call quality?
is it too loud? that person nearby you can hear what conversation is going? also when volume is lowed?
NOTE : I haven't bought moto g or moto g 2nd gen, yet or haven't placed the order for it, it will be my 1st motorola mobile, as it is not available in store to check or non of my friends had any, so I am inquiring about it before ordering it.

Charger heats up a little for me. Not as much as you said though. No smell either. No complaints about battery life. Lasts a day on normal usage (had almost full wifi) just fine.

Well,
After using the phone for 6 days, I just got the feeling that the battery is quite average.
Yes, the charger supplied with the phone phone takes more than 3.5 hours to fully charge the battery.
No smell, no overheating of charger.
There is one major issue with the battery is that it drains like a hell during nights even on Airplane mode.
I experienced battery drains of 10-15% over a period of 8 hours during nights with Wi-Fi, GPS and mobile data all OFF.
This is terrible :crying:
After searching thru threads, I found out that the issue may with drivers of GPS and Wi-Fi. It requires constant re-booting of phone after usage of Location services and/or Data Services.
Let's hope Motorola fixes these issues in their update..

Not necessarily. I have like max 3 or 4 percent drain at night, sometimes with WiFi on. The problem maybe that yours doesn't goto deepsleep. Some apps maybe preventing if.

This will depend on where you are. In the US, the phone ships with only a data cable, no charger. At least that was the case with the first gen; however, some mobile companies had models that did ship with only a charger, no cable.
I'm guessing the included charger is designed for 110V optimal, but works at 220V (but gets over-warm).

You aren't in a roam or marginal mobile coverage area are you. I found my first-gen G drained about twice as fact if it was searching for signal or roaming.

No. I'm not roaming and issues with signal either. The issue seems to be with either GPS or Wi-Fi. I used WiFi last night and put the phone into airplane mode. But didn't reboot it. I experienced battery drain of more than 25%

I am using this phone from 6 days. i can say Moto G 2nd gen.'s battery life is awesome. it takes approx 3hrs to charged full battery. and runs almost for 20 to 22 hours. I suggest you all to buy Moto G 2014.

Hi,
I have moto g 2014 since 9-September.
I must say that the battery is good. You must use a low "a" charguer (1 A) and do 2 or 3 full cycles.
After that i achieve between 3-4 hours with average usage.
I have motorola assist disabled.
In the first 2 days i had troubles with signal, it seems to be Sim related. I changued the sim to 2nd port and is working well now.
I'm from Spain sorry for my bad english.

I am having the EXACT same problems as quoted above..
If I remove the shell, the phone smell like the battery is burning inside.
The charger hears up quite a bit, although not as much as a molten rock.
The phone is taking 3 hours + to charge.
My phone was delivered 2 days ago and I'm already facing this problem.
Do I have to ask for a replacement?
Kindly suggest.

[Q] HTC One All day battery solutions? Share your thoughts

So we have all read reviews of the device and the battery performance. From all the reviews I read with various takes on the battery life, I can conclude one thing: HTC One has amazing stand by time but the 1080p screen undeniably consumes significant amount of power.
In other words, the best way to save power is not to use it. But you guys have better solutions, battery pack? battery case? which brand? Please share your thoughts.
I use a 7000mAh power bank from A-Solar.
With this, I can charge two phones or cameras.

As in im supposed to be revising for exams, as a uni student, and therefore have had alot of time procrastinating, playing with the phone .
Since ive had mine last week, ive non stop been using it, playing games, using camera, and normal day to day activities, and i must say, im sooo impressed with the battery over the One X,
For example, my One x would come off charge about 7am, by 4 - 5pm i would be charging it again. On my One i take it off the same time, and dont need to charge it till im in bed, approx 11pm - 12am.
Its brill!
Here's some of the things i've been doing since the hero days, a lot of you will know these but here they are anyway
Turn off auto brightness, move it to as low as you can bare.
Switch off all wireless controls when not in use. 3G, GPS, BT, Wifi, NFC.
Turn all email and syncs to manual (personally i leave google alone)
Try not to have a live wallpaper
Try to reduce the amount of active widgets you have.
If possible don't install apps with ads all over them, especially with push notifications, 10 or so of these on your phone can cause real problems with battery.
Use autostarts (responsibly) to reduce what starts up and when for example: Wild blood and Nova 3 (both paid for games) start up with your phone, nuke them with autostarts, there are many more.
Give your phone some full cycles of charge every now and again.
Don't use task killers and always close apps unless you really need to go back to it.
Install better battery stats and check for wakelocks, deal with them and then remove better battery stats, periodically check for them, once a month or every flash.
Try not to overcharge, if youre really picky then get a timed socket, so it'll only charge for the time that you set it to.
There are more but you get the picture, i personally get about 24 hours roughly, maybe more, i tend to charge at night time, this being my third HTC One, and that is roughly the average i got.
Hope this helps.
Fix your wakelocks, use the powersaver mode but only check data connection and CPU settings, only select reduce brightness if you're willing to deal with incredibly difficult sunlight visibility.

Most of these are decent. Recommending full charge cycles is not. There is no reason to drain to nothing and then charge to full. In fact, that represents a full charge cycle, and each battery has a limited number of cycles it will do. The more you do it, the more the battery degrades.

Agree on the first part... cycling isn't good, it also increases heat in battery which will only degrade the life of the battery, only good that comes out of it is that the battery percentage is correct, meaning it is used to make sure that the percentage you're seeing is correct but the battery life will stay the same.
Also, I thought that a charger cuts out once it has charged the phone, and so overcharging is not possible

Well i've been doing the same thing for my whole life and i've had mobile phones for a long time and the battery for me has never been an issue.
I'm not saying to cycle it all the time, but i would do it every now and again, bare in mind that the battery will degrade after around a year anyway, even worse after two. There isn't a lot you can do in that time that will change that.
Cycling isn't going to hurt the battery at all.

Well if you pop into a phone shop and notice that the screens on the phones sometimes become a bit dodgy, up until you remove the charging cable at least, and then it begins to work again.
Plus the batteries degrade heavily on those phones that have been charged all the time, so over charging definitely has an impact on your battery.
I don't care what anyone says about it not taking charge, overcharging is bad for your phone, excessive over charging anyway.

Cycling the battery does nothing for the run time except degrade it. Obviously, occasionally, isn't going to make a difference. But lets not pretend that running the battery all the way down and then charging it back up does anything at all except to use up a full charge cycle.
You're also using overcharge incorrectly. Overcharging is going beyond the limit of the battery, and this often results in flames. What you're talking about is constantly topping off while on charger overnight. So like 100>99>98>100>99>98>100 etc. That is bad for the battery, yes.
All cycling does for ur battery is make sure ur battery is reporting it's level correctly.. Nothing else. It's useful after flashing custom roms.. But it doesn't improve ur battery life or time.
I would always cycle my new phone for a few charges but after that I wouldn't bother. I've nearly always had an extra battery kit but obviously u can't do it with the htc one.

It's strange that battery lives are variant according to your feedback, my guess is because the screen panels are from variant manufacturer.
As for myself, unplugged at 7:30am, by about 9pm I usually have less then 25%, 3hrs web surfing (using 3G), around 20 min call, one hour gaming and some texts. I think moderate would be a better word for One's battery. Sure a big improvement of One X but still no where near iPhone 5

cycling the battery isn't going to hurt it if you do it every now and again (LIKE I SAID) as another user has said, it helps with stats and calibration.
To save the battery life , Is it ok to charge the phone even if the battery has 40 percent ? Or I should recharge it when it is less than 15 percent ?

Exactly,
I always (try to) charge my phone when battery shows in between (15-20%). I keep it plugged in for 1.5 hours till it reaches 95%+
Charging at 40% means you have used one of the charging cycle of a battery and i've read somewhere that every battery has 1000 charging cycles..
Yes..its better not to go there..
My friend uses iPhone 5 and he gets like one whole day with moderate usage (2 hours 3G, 1 hour of gaming, 2 Hours music.,30 minutes of calling & whatsapp ) .. i think the term moderate is different for everyone..

Could the highly varied battery life be a manufacturing issue?

Just throwing this out there... I have a Nexus 5 here has pretty poor battery, mostly when it comes to the screen time. Barely getting 2 hours per charge. In fact, I called google today and they are going to replace it; more on that in a bit.
I've tried stock, CM11, CM11 w/chaos kernel, paranoid w/franco kernel - neither is better than the other.. fter seeing some people on stock + franco and other combinations getting 6-7 hours of screen time it got me thinking. Could we be seeing a set of battery manufacturing defects? Google has already changed the speaker grill and button designs [ironically, my Nexus 5 that was ordered 1 week ago came w/the smaller speaker grill and loose buttons].
However, I'm wondering if there was a bad batch of batteries out there? If I didn't get an exchange from google I was going to pop this phone open and replace the battery with a new one just to prove a point. When I spoke to google today, they thought that a 20% drop in about 30 minutes of use was excessive, which I have to agree.
Ideas? Thoughts?
-t
I'm repeating a post from the battery thread I just made....
I'm wondering if all the variances in battery life we are seeing could be a sign of a broader issue - a large batch of defective batteries?
opened this thread for thoughts/comments: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2686119
Nope. Its the variances in usage and settings. Guaranteed.
I got 6 hours screen time plus on my Moto x....always. with no changes whatsoever, my wife gets 4 1/2. Why? 90 percent of my use was tapatalk. Mostly just text. 90 percent of her use is Facebook, mostly images....with text. Images take more power to load than text.
That primary difference in our usage patterns made a consistent hour and half screen time difference. Oh....and she makes a few calls, I barely ever had or made calls.
Sent from my cell phone telephone....
Not meaning to debunk your theory....there are occasional defects....but mostly the huge differences are usage and settings.
The guys getting 6 hours plus screen time usually are running with most services off or frozen. Dim screens. Obviously not gaming much or at all. Not using location services or navigating. These things can make giant differences in battery life.
I suggest getting gsam. And doing a full discharge with it and doing some screen shots at the end. I'm betting if you think you have an issue that can be solved.....or its your particular usage patterns.
Sent from my cell phone telephone....
I can stand to have location services off for the hour of better SOT. However I can't stand having a dim screen so auto is the way I go! I still get 41/2 to 5 hours SOT!

I was using auto....and yeah, generally it's not to bad....now. I think 4.4.2 improved it....doesn't Jack up to full as much.
Then I saw someone mention "display brightness" app ....its awesome. A little slider always on my screen. Love it!

I get 6 hours screen on time on the reggie. Location left on (high accuracy) and same with Google now. I think the only things I have turned off in Google now are search history and location reporting. NFC off. Auto brightness. I agree with kj its based on your usage. I really only use my phone for tapatalk or texting mainly. Some Facebook (not really too into it) emails and a liiiitle bit of gaming.. I also use custom kernels and slightly undervolt. My phone can take -25 across the board and 675mV at 300mhz. I mostly UV for heating purposes when I game. (Addicted to robot unicorn attack 2 and smash it). Also don't use any kind of tap or swipe to wake (KILLS battery on this phone). Plus I always charge with USB. I read somewhere that lithium ion batteries discharge slower if they are charged with USB as opposed to AC. That and I don't have free A/C slots in my man cave. Just a USB port to from my PlayStation to a qi wireless charger. Yes it takes a while....
your battery life majorly depends on tbe quality of your phone/data connection. really majorly! it can make the difference of just 2-3 sot hours if not such a great signal is around, to 5-6 hours sot if there is a great phone/data signal. and it varies greatly for everyone. also, how you personally use your phone makes a large impact. its also going to vary greatly as we al use our phones differently. and how you set up your phone and which apps you use is going to majorly affect battery. and thats going to vary greatly as well. and there are even more reasons for the large variation in battery life.
Unless you heavily use GPS or voice calls, 2 hours SoT is too low. To get that you probably have a rogue processes preventing the phone from sleeping. In comparison, I've used the phone to game for over 3 hours on a charge.
Once that's out of the way and if you're still not happy with the battery life you're seeing ask yourself: what's running on my phone that I don't really need?
Every frivolous widget, forgotten service, or Google Now card is going to use some amount of battery and they add up on a limited power source.

That's a great point @simms22, don't think people factor into the equation quality of reception. In China on crappy HSPA+ with 1 bar, I'm lucky to get 3-4 SOT. In Los Angeles on an excellent LTE connection I can get 5-6 SOT. So reception adds 2 hrs of SOT in my case.
OP, as I suggested. Get gsam from play store....do a full 100 to very low discharge and lets see what it shows.
Otherwise we're all just guessing.

Do a few screenshots when your battery is fairly low. Don't reboot or gsam resets.
For screens, try main gsam screen, app screen...then click the app screen dropdown, and do time held awake and kernel wakelocks. If you're not rooted, not sure which of these won't work.

My son played some games on the phone and i had to use the phone for work, so i need to restart the test.
Right now i'm at 1d 17h 40m, screentime 3h 28m; GPS off, google now off, hotword off, bluetooth off, wifi on, LTE.
Regardless, in gsam, the time held awake is
System 33s
Battery Monitor Widge Pro 29s
Google Play 18s
Android System 15s
Kernal Wakelogs
"no apps that have consumed the specified...."
I'm going to let the battery run out (at 6% right now); I've disabled wakelock for google play store in App ops; charge it up and then let it run w/out Wifi, and leave it on 3G.. My location is on the edge of LTE so its best to leave it on 3G here
Will post screenshots of that test when completed in the next 24-48hrs
Thoughts?

We can look at the screen shots still....but 1day 17hours with 3 and a half hours screen time? That sound pretty darn good to me! LOL
Guys getting 5 hours of screen time and that are usually near 24 hours, it much less. At a day and 17 hours....and that screen time, I'm doubting you have an issue at all.

Keep in mind 3g uses the most battery for your internet condition. WiFi and LTE are more efficient though your low signal on LTE wouldn't help.

That is false. 3g uses less than LTE. Why do you think the Moto G gets such great battery life? LTE is a battery hog. WiFi uses the least power of the 3. Unless your 3g signal is very weak, it will conserve battery life over LTE.

It has been confirmed by users on XDA as well as this test.
http://anandtech.com/show/7517/google-nexus-5-review/3
N5 LTE is more efficient than previous LTE phones due to some Qualcomm tech. Also by being considerably faster than 3G it can finish its task and go idle quicker.
Moto G battery life is mainly due to its considerably less powerful specifications.

Moto X 2013 Battery Problems

I am using a Moto X 2013 Dev Edition on T-Mobile, this particular unit I got from Moto Care after my initial one broke. It feels like it gets much worse battery life than the first. I did not unlock or root this one yet. I'm on the latest update with pretty good LTE/4G coverage and the phone completely discharges from full to 5% in less than 4.5 hours while only browsing! It then recharges from 5% to 87% in less than 1.5 hours, this seems unusually fast and led me to believe that the battery is faulty. What do you think?
Check what is using battery the most. You can check it in battery settings. Moreover I would encourage you to install one of the apps like Better Battery Stats (you need root) or Gsam Battery Monitor to see which app prevents your phone from going to sleep.
Sent from my XT1052
Um... Your screen was on that whole time mostly.
That's your issue. ?
Yes I know it was, I was browsing for 4.5 hours XD
But I feel that's a short time for the phone to completely discharge.
I felt like my first Moto X retail unit did much better, maybe this one is refurbished and the battery is worn already?
Thoughts?

Have you tried to fully discharge and recharge it while turned off?
I did this and now my Battery is nice again! About 24 hours with about 3 hours SOT! Wifi + Location always on, 1 hour of recording (so not Deep sleep), 4G and a little Spotify streaming via Network!
ahhh and i deinstalled Switch Widget Pro and some other Apps because they kept my X from sleeping! :good:
Good luck!
I say 4,5 hours of screen on time while surfing is great for the x, i don't see the problem here

Abnormal battery usage

So today while visiting a friend and doing a couple things on my phone the battery showed 81%. Suddenly it cut off and would not cut back on. I put it on the charger for about 20 mins and it came back on and showed 16%.
When I took it off the charger it was at 100% and I didn't use it at all between her house and mine. It's also eating battery super fast now. I'm not rooted or anything but this has me concerned. I signed up for the 1 to 1 trade but I'm worried about waiting now. Anyone else experiencing weird battery issues?
I'd be a bit concerned about that. If the battery really was at 81%, and the hardware decided the battery was dead, it really makes new wonder if this wouldn't allow it to become over charged and go "pop"..

Last night mine went from 21% to 15% instantaneously while watching YouTube. Not worried, however, it's going back when the replacements arrive.
So now I get a Samsung+ warning that my device is draining battery faster than its charging. I was using my official wireless fast charger. After noticing that the phone only got up to 30% after a hour I switched it to the wall charger that came with it. charging is still going slow. I even did a factory reset.

I'd do another factory reset and let the phone sit for a while before setting it up. Then I'd make do and exchange it ASAP! Keep a careful eye on charging temperature in the meanwhile. I'm thinking of charging mine on a baking sheet so it can't ignite anything, lol! Since you are having such unusual problems, can't be too cautious!

This happened to me exactly the same way. I had over 70% left and then all of a sudden it wouldn't turn on. I plugged it in and phone showed it was at 0%.

Mine was at 30% and turned off. I've also noticed sometimes my battery says 100% but will still have the red led charging light on,rather then green when it's fully charged. I wonder if it has something to do with the battery stats.

Edit: Haha, I was looking at the screen shot from my thread and saw 4% battery. I thought my phone's battery hand tanked again and was about to drop it before it burst into flames!

Is your phone running hot? Mine is always warm and I'm getting very high cpu usage from Android system and Android IS. It didn't die outta no where today, but my battery life is horrible. Today I got 57 mins of Screen time by the time it 15% in about 7hrs and that was with battery saver on all day.

No, it actually runs very cool. I also am getting good battery life (about 5 hours sot). Actually, everything went back to normal after the bizarre battery behavior that I had one night a week ago.

Weird. Mine did it twice, battery life has been horrible and my wireless fast charger wont charge it. Says it's draining faster that it's charging. I've factory reset 3x already. Can't wait until my replacement Note comes in.

Who's to say some problem won't crop up with the new iPhone? Maybe you shouldn't rush in. I wouldn't be in this mess if it weren't for the high price and my plan to use the promotions to mitigate that. I always wait a couple of months to buy but by then the promotions would have expired. Anyways, it's done, now trying to stay positive and remember I have a Tab and SD card for my trouble.

Moto g6 play battery

I recently bought a used, but very good condition XT1922-9 . I had read beforehand that the battery is great in these.... unfortunately I'm not having the same result. Is there any recommendations for helping battery life on these? Would rooting help or a custom rom (if available on this phone)?

No. It all depends on usage. It has a big battery. What are you comparing it to? And if you're talking screen on time, that's the biggest battery hog no matter what device/battery you have
If I'm doing anything at all it dies fast. Heck it lost 13% while I slept.

13%? Uh, not major.
Try disabling apps you don't use.
I plug mine in at night. But ymmv
In my case:
I used to have LG X Power with a 4100mAh battery and when I charged the phone before bed, the phone stayed at 100% till morning, and in the morning I played 1 game of Golf Clash, which is about 7/8 minutes, the battery was still 100%.
I bought Moto G6 Play, with similar battery of 4000mAh, when I charge it before bed, I clear the list of used application (under the square button), and overnight t lost 4% of power just lying on the desk (with mobile data and WiFi off).
I was expecting similar results as with my previous LG, but unfortunately this phone disappointed me.
Any way to fix it? Maybe changing charger to Fast Charge, or even Regular Charge, instead of Turbo Charge that we have now, will fix it?
