[Q] Hard lock: Throw away a perfectly good phone? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, so because I had a major brain fart I stupidly purchased an Xperia Z that is hard (counter) network locked to T-Mobile Austria.
Please do not waste time replying to this post if you don't know what this means.
I refuse to believe that all I can do is throw it away for scrap. But nowhere on this forum can I find a post from someone who successfully got a hard lock resolved by the phone manufacturer or the carrier, or anyone else for that matter.
I just spent 20 minutes on the phone with Sony Mobile support here in Sweden and not even they could tell me if it can be done.
What if a poorly trained authorized dealer rep accidentally hard locks a phone when attempting to code unlock it for a customer? Does it go in the bin for recycling? I don't think so.
I am prepared to eat the cost of getting it unlocked. Surely someone must have done this?

Ok, so i managed to loose my phone over the weekend at V in Staffordshire. So there are 2 outcomes to this.
1) The phone got killed as it fell out of my pocket, and then probably got stamped on a few times by people not knowing its there.
2) Someone has found it but not turned it over to lost property. They arent gonna be able to do much with it as it has a flat battery and has now been IMEI blacklisted and the SIM locked.
Thank god for insurance that what I say! However, I wish i had configured RTConfig properly and then I would have atleast got some info from the device if anyone swaps out the sim.
What tends to happen to these phones even though they are IMEI blocked?
Some police forces will recover your phone when the IMEI is blacklisted by triangulating the position.
I have heard about this in the UK on some show and here in romania i know they recover stolen phones because one of my friends got his N95 back.
So how i dont think the police are going to raid a house just to get the phone back.
When you unlock these things so that you can put custom roms on them, does this sim unlock the phone?
I know there are methods available now to sim unlock, but i wasnt sure if the hardspl thing did it as well?
Some little blighter has got all my contacts and calender events, along with some cracking photos of V! That is if the phone wasnt destroyed in the mosh pit.

Nope, i dont tend to have the password on otherwise i cant invoke a call from my bluetooth headset, unless that has changed.
or they might find a way to change the imei.
Well if they manage to do that, then kudos to the criminal activity. That or it gets flogged to some terrorist.

Get real my friend .... no police force will recover the phone...by triangulation.
Yes , triangulation can be done, but for sure no police man will ever hunt down the user of the stolen phone.
By now the pohne has alredy been sold to un unsuspecting user...

have to look around too for something like this cause a phone this expensive is not worth loosing over an accident like yours

Yep, I get phone insurance with my bank account. I have to pay £30 excess though when I make a sucessful claim. The new Sim from T-Mob cost me £10 however that can be claimed back as well. They then send you the same phone back (probably a refurb) or a same spec/better phone if they can't get like for like. That one should be interesting as I will be sure to print the specs of for the Diamond and make sure its either the same or better.

Mine is covered by Orange Care anywhere in the world for £5 per month for loss, damage etc, I think now they charge an admin fee .
As for IMEI ~ these can be changed but is against the law, if not changed then the phone is only IMEI blocked in this country (AFAIK) unless agreements have been arranged with other conutries by now?

I know your pain, mine was stolen a few weeks ago. Bought a new one, but I didn't have insurance. I've bought Sprite Terminator now, gave my girlfriend the phone and told her to go shopping or something.

[Q] Where to get I-9000M Fixed in Toronto/GTA while unlocked on Rogers??

Hi everyone.
Like myself, I'm sure a lot of you LOVE this phone, and, again like myself, bought it and unlocked it to use with Rogers and don't have the option of taking it to Bell to get it fixed after this fiasco of a fried internal sd. So we're potentially stuck with the most beautiful brick in our hands right now, knowing what it is fully capable of.
If anyone else has been in these same exact shoes (fried internal sd, unlocked on Rogers, no Bell option to fix - regardless of before or after 2.2 update) and has gotten their phone repaired, could you please lend a helpful post to the community and recommend to us where you got it fixed, how long it took, and how much it cost? I live in Toronto, and I'm looking for Toronto/GTA options to get it fixed.
This is by far the best phone I have ever used, and would love to get it working again soon.

Bring it to bell
I believe bell is obligated to take your phone and send it for repair, given you have the receipt.
There have been a number of people in your situation where they purchased it off contract to use on another carrier and have sent it into bell for repair when it bricked.

just prepare yourself to be without your phone for a while. i send my phone in on December 3rd and parts for repair are apparently on back order until January 3rd

I decided to just go through Samsung Canada themselves, and I wrote the following in one of the other threads:

Second call got through, first went to voicemail, redialed right away. Talking to them now.
So during the call, I was told that I would have to take the phone back to where I bought it and send it in from there. I then advised the guy I was talking to that I had read that other people were able to get Samsung to send out the shipping label and do the repair. He double checked and confirmed it, and is in the process of preparing the repair order right now. Have the phone handy, because they will ask for the phone's Serial Number (S/N) behind the battery. 7-14 days business days is the estimated repair time, and no cost. He estimated the label will take about 24 hours or less to be e-mailed to me. Hope this information helps. All told the process took about 20 minutes, depending on the knowledge of the csr.

Doing it this way, I never had to leave the warmth of my office lol. The phone is now in a box with the label, waiting to be picked up.
LUCKILY I hadn't sold my old HTC Tytn II Kaiser that I have Android flashed on, so I don't have to go Android-less!! Man that phone is so reliable...it's a massive brick, but so reliable...I was going to sell it, but now I think it will remain a permanent mainstay as my trusty Android backup phone. I may even consider getting another HTC phone for Android, and sell this Samsung Jekyll and Hyde machine :S

Anything special you said in your conversation? I called Samsung twice and they did not know about the whole shipping label via email thing, insisted on going to the service provider.

[Q] Jtag, IMIE, IMSI Unlock

Now Its my understanding that changing my IMEI number on my phone is so illegal that my grandchildren will serve part of my jail sentence..
I hard bricked my HTC ONE M7 and sent it to Mobile Tech Videos to be Jtag repaired. After about a month of hardly any communication and him finally saying that he revived my device but couldn't get it to unlock no matter what code was entered. I told him to send it back to me and I would figure something out.
Once I received my device back after a month I started doing some research and then ran a fastboot getvar all and noticed that my serial number was different and my IMEI number was different. Besides how upset I am about that my question is this..
How come its illegal for me to change my numbers but it seems when a Jtag service does it, that seems to be alright?
Now Im stuck with a device that is just as worthless as being hard bricked.
Wondering if I call ATT would they except my new numbers or just a waste of time?
Any thoughts?
It's not illegal to restore the original IMEI, as in a repair.
ATT won't help you with an unlock code for the new IMEI as they have no record of it.
Most likely you got a new motherboard. Also a few people reported unable to unlock after JTAG process. If your Imei is different, take a chance to get an unlock code

My motherboard wasn't replaced as far as I know.
I played for a new unlock code but doesn't unlock my device.
My device won't even connect to the ATT network.
I've had a Samsung jtag repaired and everything worked great. I believe the connection problem is directly related to the shotty job done by the repair shop.

seems like your MB was replaced
The board was NOT replaced. Also, I'd stress here that you were actually refunded in full (not sure if that was ever mentioned). See the issue that causes this problem as I have outlined in some other threads below...
"We are continuing to dig for a solution but the issue is there is a unique identifier within the eMMC which is checked by the modem through amss.bin with an RSA certification. If this unique identifier is destroyed by user corruption (bricking the phone within that region) then there is currently no way to rebuild it. The most logical way to resolve this issue is to have a developer patch the modem/radio to bypass that check. It should be able to be done and is already being done on the N7100 and I9300 devices which were facing a similar issue...

Mobile Tech is well known and respected here. IF they said it cant be done and they did everything they could then you can trust that.
People need to understand that there is very real risk with what is done here. When you flash your device, you accept that you could brick the device and have to buy a new one. This is all part of game that we play. If you are not willing to accept that then dont mess around with a $600 dollar device.

First of all I would like to make sure Josh (Mobile Tech Videos) and all the entourage are fully aware that Im not an idiot and I can clearly see whats going on here. If you want to continue on with the smoke and mirrors then that's fine we can play this game all year.
I was in fact refunded most of the charges but not all. And I was refunded by a "Paypal" screw up. So lets not get carried away with the sincerity of a half hearted %80 refund.
I dont care about the refund lets get that straight! From a business standpoint sending my phone to get fixed cost me a lot of money in a week but a month I could have bought a new one. I was told 3 days it took 5 weeks and still no phone or resolution. I have heard "Bad Brick" "Your Brick" "Unusually Bad Brick" and my favorite "Your unusual Brick". All these terms are usually defined as Hard Brick. I only sent my device to Mobile Tech to transfer liability of getting the shell opened. I paid for express service then a week later I get a call asking permission to take my device apart. Now... Im not familiar with an HTC One m7 Jtag procedure at all really but especially one through the micro port.
I tried to be patient and wasn't surprised that problems arose. I understand that somethings just cant be fixed but I have tried to communicate with Josh (the staff at Mobile Tech Videos) for over a month then finally i get a message apologizing for the delay and communications problems.
I would like someone to explain to me how all the "Bricked" terms differ please.. And im talking about Dead no response NOT SOFT Brick. My point is dont say you can fix something that you cant fix and if your experimenting with my device I dont care just let me know.

Help with my secondhand Note 5? (device protection lock)

Yesterday I bought a Note 5 from a guy including the original package and the receipt. I realised that it has this Device Protection triggered (the new feature on lollipop which locks the phone when the phone is factory reset while still having the lock screen enabled and requires the original owner to log in with his google account). I asked him to meet me again for him to log in which he refused as he thinks it is unnecessary and now he is not responding since. So I'm just stuck here with the brand new locked device. Anyone know what I can do? Can it be unlocked via warranty as I have the original receipt? Thanks

Contact Samsung to find out. Warranties and laws regarding them are different in every country. I don't think anyone here will be able (or willing) to help. We have no way to know if you paid for the device, paid for a stolen device, or stole it yourself. (I'm not accusing you of anything - just pointing out that folks here on xda developers have no way to know.)

I did call Samsung/google yesterday but they were not too sure and just suggested to send it - which makes me a bit worried that if it cannot get it done which can be a waste of money and time.. oh well!
I'm posting to see if anyone went through the same situation!

Samsung won't be able to do anything about it. They have nothing to do with Android's device protection. Google support is probably your only solution, and you'll need to keep at it until you get directed towards somebody who does know. I'm not sure they'll be able to help you, but apart from convincing the guy you bought it from to meet again, it's all you can do.
Honestly, you'll probably have an easier time convincing the guy to unlock it than convincing Google support you actually purchased the phone.

just a few pointers to consider....original receipt?
from Samsung or cellphone shop /provider
or from person you bought it from ... or who ?
Why don't you approach them.. for assistance ?
Another point, that warranty that you got, is it "transferable"...? to a 3rd party.(in your case)
In my country and my experience you get very few companies. /shops that would accept /honor, warranty if sold to 3rd-party?.(resold on the sidelines)
I found that even when a customer bought device cash, the company (seller) normally has some record of the original customer and in some cases you have to register device to be entitled to be covered re warranty. It might be different where you are.. i don't know.. i mention it in my post that you can consider it. If not applicable, plse ignore above.

After going thru all the possible places (Samsung, google, retail shop the phone was bought from), the only answer is to reach the seller no matter what...
I nagged my seller and explained every single part of the problem and then he finally decided to meet me and log in for me which he did!
However, I seriously feel that Google has to do somethimg about this device protection. For example, allowing the seller to generate one time code for the buyer to log in when they can't meet and don't want to dhare the password, or something that seller can disable this on a computer.. just something.
Well I hope my case gave you some heads up
When selling/buying an Android higher than 5.1, always check the device protection.
If youre a seller, factory reset after disabling the lock screen!

sprint locked my phone for ever, any help please?

I bought an used note 8 and used for 3 months, then "phone not allowed" started to show up in the top corner.
After I went to sprint store and they ran the imei #, they said this device is locked by sprint because it's reported stolen or lost and there is nothing we can do :crying:
Any help to save my money please?

You need to either get a hold of whoever you bought it from or there's not going to be anything that anyone can do about it because whoever sold you the phone waited for 3 months after you got it and then they reported it stolen and the reason they do that sh¡t is because they'll be given another phone for free usually or a small fee and then they'll turn around and do the same thing all over again! That's why you don't buy from people unless they're willing to meet you in the carriers local store that way they'll know for sure that you bought it and the person won't be able to do that.. If you can't get your money back or find the person you bought it from then you'll have to accept it as a lesson learned and don't do that again..

there are a great deal of sites that can fix a blacklisted IMEI for a fee. Usually around $35 to $50 or so. The blacklist fix does work when obtained from reputable sites. Double edged sword there tho, youre needing a "reputable" site to do "not reputable" stuff for you.

some of what you said is right. Always get the IMEI from the seller and check it yourself. Do not believe what the seller tells you. Its actually very fast and easy to check for blacklisting. Even at the time of purchase, boot up the phone and triple check the IMEI and once youve done that and purchased the phone, thats pretty much all you can do. Also make sure that its not currently attached to an account. And when you buy it, you can dial the *86 (i think thats the star key combo to get customer service) and verify that the phone doesnt have a balance on it. Of course, all of this is best if done in person for obvious reasons.

some of what you said is right. Always get the IMEI from the seller and check it yourself. Do not believe what the seller tells you. Its actually very fast and easy to check for blacklisting. Even at the time of purchase, boot up the phone and triple check the IMEI and once youve done that and purchased the phone, thats pretty much all you can do. Also make sure that its not currently attached to an account. And when you buy it, you can dial the *86 (i think thats the star key combo to get customer service) and verify that the phone doesnt have a balance on it. Of course, all of this is best if done in person for obvious reasons.

Yeah I understand the IMEI thing but the IMEI will come back clear in the beginning because the person who sold the phone didn't report it stolen right away they purposely wait 3 months that way whoever they sold it to is long gone and can't prove they bought it from them so it gets black listed and then the seller gets a new phone and the buyer has a paperweight if they can't get it off the blacklist.

reason #732,155,289,001,914 why i hate humans detailed in this gentleman's post above. Unscrupulous people trying to pawn their bullshyte off on other people for their own gain and waiting 3 months to intentionally f*ck a person out of their hard earned money by putting a phone up on offer and letting a person buy it in good faith and letting them use it happily for 3 months then eff the buyer right in the a by reporting it stolen for their own pathetic gain

Thanks for the valuable information. If you all could be so kind to give me your opinion. I was considering buying a phone from ebay advanced as having a. clean IMEI with 30 day free returns. Therfore, am I correct in assuming that the prof of purchase from PayPal and ebay will prevent a seller from blacklisting imy phone in the future? Will, the carrier accept this as prof of ownership? Thank you.
