Hi Guys,
I've been wondering for a few days, Sony is basically making the "Waterproof" function of this phone as the main selling point.
I'm just curious as to how the insurance and warranty is going to be affected by the water proof.
As I know most insurances claim its water damage and say its not covered.
Can they still do this with the Xperia, as its water proof?
Are warranties etc going to change incorporating the water-proof(ness).
Thanks.
It's not water-proof, it's water-resistant.
The water seals inside the phone will still void your warranty if voided, its just like a water proof camera, if YOU haven't secured your waterproof flaps/seals properly and then submerge it, then it is user error.
Wait a minute, so why the hell do they claim "Water-PROOF" whens it not.
So basically, you couldn't just wash it off like the advert.
Define RESISTANT compared to PROOF....?
??? It is water resistant, I washed my xperia z a few times now, mostly as a show of, and also spent some time in the bath with it watching....
Nevermind point is when you don't close the flaps and submerge it the sensors underneath the flaps turn red, making warranty void, but if there is water damage without the flap sensors tripping, then you are covered by warranty, some users are worried about the flaps turning red, but for me they are still white eventhough I submerged the phone in water several times now.

Hmm, what flaps?
Sony is deceiving me here. I though it was water-proof !!

Erm... There are flaps on the phone covering every port and I'm sure the Xperia Z is advertised as water resistant. Not waterproof. It can still witstand being submerged underwater for up to 30mins and 100m though.
I guess you mean 1m and not 100m. But that would have been nice for deep sea diving.

Hahahah XD Yeah! My bad! Was doing Math while typing that post
Math screws up your brain.
If i am not wrong, the spec states ip7 and ip5.ip 5 would likely be water resistant while ip 7 is water proofing

So whats the use in the flaps?
Why not just remove the flaps and then theres no chance of you messing up?

You are wrong, it is
IP55 = Limited dust ingress protection low pressure water jets from any direction
and
IP57 = Limited dust ingress protection immersion between 15cm and 1m depth
And as long as the flaps are closed you'll be a ok.

What the heck, I need to see one of these in real I think.
I really wanted one but now with all the talk of flaps I'm thinking twice...
go ahead and get it. this is the most rugged high end phone to date and probably for the entire year 2013. all the best.

The flaps don't really disturb, To charge the phone you can use the dock, and for listening to music (if you do that a lot) you can go with bluetooth earphones.
And I've submerged my phone also in a galss of water and also took it into the shower, you should just make sure that you dry your phone before openening the flaps again, then avaerything should be fine
Great, Xperia looks like my upgrade then. May see some of you around here in a few months time when I'll be an owner
Have fun all, thanks very much for your responses.
I am trying to decide on getting the active or the regular s5 on AT&T and I don't care about the drop proofness of the active, but all I want is the water resistant part of it. Are they same when it comes to that?
Side question, has anyone really swam with the S5? I have a baggie with a headphone jack right now for my s4 and it works pretty just, just wondering tho?
thank you
No they are not the same. Different IP certifications make the Active more resistant to water ie deeper depths and longer periods of exposure
seeing as both phones are rated at IP67 that would mean that they are both resistant to the same levels of water. the main difference in the phones is the fact that the active comes with the milspec 810g which just means its shockproof in and of itself up to 4 feet on a flat surface. so add a decent case to that and you've got a nokia brick pretty much, but as you said you dont care about that side of it.
So for the original question, they are identical in waterproofness, and dustproofness. IP67 = IP67

Wrong. they both are the same IP67 certification, in terms of water resistance they are both exactly the same

Perfect, thank you guys, I think I rather keep the sexiness of the regular one, not to mention, I am sure the ROM's will be different (when that happens) and I am sure more people will build these roms for the regular aposed to active. also the regular one has the finger print sensor, so....
Ahh apologies, I thought I had read when the phone was announced that it was a different rating
Anyone know of a waterproof case for the N6? Something similar to a lifeproof case, perhaps? I know its water resistant, but looking for waterproof.
I believe the Nexus 6 is IP67 rated - 1 meter submersion in water for 30 minutes with no damaging ingress of water.

It's not it's only splash resistant like the moto x due to the nano coating
So this isn't scientific or from the manufacturer, but some guys did an IP67 test and the Moto X passed. The moto website only says "water resistant" which is horribly ambiguous. The Nexus 6 has the same water resistant tech.
[can't post link]
I'm an electronics engineer, and a few of our products are "IP67" rated. A lot of times the manufacturer will not state or guarantee the IP67 rating because some devices will inevitably get water damage and then customers get pissed because they think waterproof means water invincible.
I would bet the Nexus 6 will pass the IP67 test every time - provided the device is new and the seals aren't damaged and you haven't dropped it too much.

Interesting. I watched a Motox review that showed the opposite--phone stopped working after a couple minutes in a kitchen sink.
My theory could very well be wrong. Search "submersion test" at androidpit.com.
Everyone should tweet lifeproof to let them know there is a demand. The nuud would be awesome for this device.
One of the YouTube videos I watched on the nexus 6 had it submerged in a bath tub and it worked fine.

nexus 6 lifeproof case
What about sending an email to lifeproof for a nexus 6 case from the nüüd series? Would that help?
The nexus is not nearly popular enough for lifeproof to make a case. They only do iphones, galaxy s series, and the droid turbo. They only did the turbo as part of a deal with Verizon because Verizon is most likely their largest customer.
What are you planning?
Looks good enough for me.

I have a couple of these. I hate em lol.
I use my phone in the rain snow and water fell on it here and there no issues. What are you gonna go take photos of Atlantis? Lol
I'm looking for a case myself. This spring I will be riding ATV's in the dirt/mud/water etc, and want to fully protect my phone. Sure, I could drop a sim in my S4 and grab a lifeproof for that but would prefer to bring my normal phone with me.
My ultimate goal is to handle-bar mount it, paired with a go-pro.

Yeah I was thinking similarly for my Mountain Bike.
I just want to use mine in the shower in the morning, but scared the steam and water will still get in despite the nano coating

Even IP67 certified stuff could get water damage if you accidentally put the device right in the stream of water

Don't do this. The heated water/steam will damage it without a good case designed for water proof.
So I was reading the nexus 6 spec sheet and I saw that it was water resistant. I was wondering if anybody knows how water resistant it is since I know that it doesn't have the standard IP 6/7 military rating that most phones that are water resistant claim to have. Like will it survive a me dropping it in a puddle or being submerged completely? IS anybody else curious?

There was a post of someone doing some things with it in a bathtub, http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/video-nexus-6-water-test-submerge-t2949904 . But since it isn't rated, this is a YMMV sort of situation.

Thanks for the link bro. That video made me cringe.
My Xperia Z drowned in a bath eventually, no way will I be doing anything like that with the Nexus 6. Had to claim on insurance for water Damage on a water proof phone!
I guess the title is quite straightforward. The gsmarena and the box itself show "IP65/68" and it confuses me a bit. Is it 65 or 68 or something else?
It means it has both certificates: IP65 and IP68.

But 68 has the 65's characteristics already included, why bother pointing it out?
Could be that they went first for the IP65, then tried 68. I can't find official information.

Neither can I. I just want to find out to what extent is my phone officially waterproof.
It's officially ip68. I've dipped mine in water a couple of times. No damage.

No it doesn't.
IP6x is dust protected.
IPX5 is protected against low power spray.
IPX8 is protected against immersion.
You can be priced against immersion but not spray, or protected against spray and not immersion. The system doesn't mean you are protected against everything that has a smaller number.

Yes, water sprayed into a Port for example can damage it do to higher pressures exerted on the Port then static immersion.
