[Q] Curiosity Question

Hi Guys,
I've been wondering for a few days, Sony is basically making the "Waterproof" function of this phone as the main selling point.
I'm just curious as to how the insurance and warranty is going to be affected by the water proof.
As I know most insurances claim its water damage and say its not covered.
Can they still do this with the Xperia, as its water proof?
Are warranties etc going to change incorporating the water-proof(ness).
Thanks.
It's not water-proof, it's water-resistant.
The water seals inside the phone will still void your warranty if voided, its just like a water proof camera, if YOU haven't secured your waterproof flaps/seals properly and then submerge it, then it is user error.
Wait a minute, so why the hell do they claim "Water-PROOF" whens it not.
So basically, you couldn't just wash it off like the advert.
Define RESISTANT compared to PROOF....?
??? It is water resistant, I washed my xperia z a few times now, mostly as a show of, and also spent some time in the bath with it watching....
Nevermind point is when you don't close the flaps and submerge it the sensors underneath the flaps turn red, making warranty void, but if there is water damage without the flap sensors tripping, then you are covered by warranty, some users are worried about the flaps turning red, but for me they are still white eventhough I submerged the phone in water several times now.

Erm... There are flaps on the phone covering every port and I'm sure the Xperia Z is advertised as water resistant. Not waterproof. It can still witstand being submerged underwater for up to 30mins and 100m though.
I guess you mean 1m and not 100m. But that would have been nice for deep sea diving.

If i am not wrong, the spec states ip7 and ip5.ip 5 would likely be water resistant while ip 7 is water proofing

So whats the use in the flaps?
Why not just remove the flaps and then theres no chance of you messing up?

You are wrong, it is
IP55 = Limited dust ingress protection low pressure water jets from any direction
and
IP57 = Limited dust ingress protection immersion between 15cm and 1m depth
And as long as the flaps are closed you'll be a ok.

What the heck, I need to see one of these in real I think.
I really wanted one but now with all the talk of flaps I'm thinking twice...
go ahead and get it. this is the most rugged high end phone to date and probably for the entire year 2013. all the best.

The flaps don't really disturb, To charge the phone you can use the dock, and for listening to music (if you do that a lot) you can go with bluetooth earphones.
And I've submerged my phone also in a galss of water and also took it into the shower, you should just make sure that you dry your phone before openening the flaps again, then avaerything should be fine
Great, Xperia looks like my upgrade then. May see some of you around here in a few months time when I'll be an owner
Have fun all, thanks very much for your responses.

droid 4 water resistance?

hi, i was wondering how water resistant the droid 4 is. i remember one of the selling points for the droid 4 on motorola's website was that it was water resistant. but is it take in the shower water resistant, or just a few drops of water?
also, i heard that there was some kind of coating you could spray on your phone to make it waterproof, does anyone know what its called? i also know there is a company out there that waterproofs phones, but i cant remember the name of it either.
The Droid 4 isn't weather-sealed or otherwise resistant to water any more than other high-end smartphones. If you dribble a bit of water on it, you probably won't kill it, but definitely don't go taking it in the shower or texting in the pool.
I forget what that company is that applies the waterproofing coating too... google around though.
the water resistant coating isn't very reliable.
if you want to use it around water, get a water proof case/bag

Kindy funny subject lol. I remember my cousin threw his old phone straight into the pool just to show off and his phone worked fine but it also wasn't a droid 4. I wouldn't advise go anywhere near the water with your nice D4 ha ha.

water resistant?
I know this is an old thread but i had to throw in my two cents. i was recently riding my bike back from the bar and took "evasive action" and fell into a pond... it was about waist deep and i was fully submerged for a second or two with my droid 4 in my jeans pocket. when i clambered out i immediately took it out and my friend dried it off... worked fine. So take that for what you will

The very first picture.... check it out.
Also this is on the Motorola website itself...
DESIGN: DROID STRONG
What makes a phone strong? Well, DROID 4 has a display designed to resist scrapes and scratches and a force field of water-repellent nanoparticles shielding the phone against water attacks — even the electrical boards inside. This is DROID strong.

Dust under screen?

Hi, I'm contemplating buying this phone. I know it's dust-tight but does that mean the electronic internals are, or everything, including the screen? I know Super AMOLED and Super Clear LCD have no air gap so can't get dust under the touch panel but I've seen an S4 Active in the "flesh" and I saw gaps round the bezel of the phone where the glass meets the plastic (like every Samsung I've had) and I worry that dust might get in there and under the touch panel (into the actual LCD). Anyone every had a dust problem with this?

I work at a body shop (very dusty all the time)and can confirm u will not be getting any dust! Main reason for buying I537.

Same here...I drive a truck in a very dusty environment, phone is left in a holder on dash, all day long. So far no dust under screen or under back cover. Ive had phone for 2 months now.
Thanks for your replies Just had another go on one in a phone shop. It's a beauty. I only wish it did slow motion like the S4 But it's waterproof and that's brill!

I...wouldn't try it. I think your phone just became "oh #*&$" accident water proof. ie. if you drop it in the neighbors pool or something on accident you're probably fine, but I wouldn't put the "1.5 meters/30 minutes" part to the test anytime soon.
This also probably compromises any warranty given on the water proofness. If they see that it has a cracked back they could easily use that as an excuse not to repair it under warranty claim.
Just like i thought guys, but i think its still waterproof, because the film helps glass keep in his place, and the edges of the glass is still glued. That crack is like hair, really small. Ill try to take a picture in the evening, because its morningright now.

I'm still wondering: why shouldn't it be waterproof if the film is COMPLETELY covering the glass crack? I actually don't know if what I just said is true because I can't get a damn nothing from that pic :')

The film could have scratches or little tears in it itself...
Plus who is to say that the film isn't slightly lifted.
You are betting on a lot on a very thin layer of plastic.
Is it worth the price of a new phone?
It's like when you put beers in a cooler. Wait for the ice to melt and you'll see all the stickers on the beer bootle lift up and float on the water.
Simple physics, water will find the smallest whole, smallest gap, smalest opening and make it trough. That's the reason not all devices are IP rated, most of them don't even bother to manufacture something "tight" enough to get a rating, and even if they do, it's more likely a IPX7, not IPX8 like Xperia's.
Water is strong, and it will find its way.
http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/support/discover-more/water-and-dust-resistance/ look guys, Sony xperia z1 ip58
Sent from my C6903 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yeah guys you're probably right.. The risk is not worth it
As already mentioned here.
It is not worth the risk, you get water in the phone and no warranty, because there is damage on the phone that was not there when you received the phone.
If a phone goes in that has water damage. They clean all the flaps to ensure no debris, then close them, then test the phone to ensure that the phone is watertight at 1.5m for about 30 minutes.
Water in phone = warranty, no water in phone = no warranty. It would be determined that water in the phone had to be lack of care from the user, not keeping flaps clean, closing them properly or even leaving them open.
Further to this, I am certain they would just say the crack in the glass was the issue, again deemed to be user negligence.
I've faced this problem before. I drop my phone on 3 feet high, and crack my front tempered glass protector. And guess what? My phone dead when I submerged it underwater for less than 30s. And yes, water going inside.
if you got air tester machine u lucky but i recommend you bring to sony center

Water resistant for a short time.
It has a hydrophobic coating on it. Of course, those coatings do wear off over time.

Straight from Motorola:
http://motorola-blog.blogspot.com/2014/11/moto-maxx-choose-to-live-life-unplugged.html
Enduring protection
On the outside, Moto Maxx is designed with premium ballistic nylon, a first for the industry. It’s a high-quality, durable material with a distinctive texture and rich color - you might recognize it from outdoor gear, like backpacks. Under that, is a layer of DuPont Kevlar® fiber, a material that is five times stronger than steel.
Moto Maxx is protected inside and out with water-repellent nano-coating and then topped with Corning Gorilla Glass.

What I found interesting is the ballistic version -- which the Maxx is -- has both Kevlar AND premium ballistic nylon. Droid Turbo comes in both Kevlar and "ballistic nylon" versions. But the ballistic nylon version has Kevlar underneath. It has BOTH.
As for "water proof", no. Water repellent is as much as they will say. If it was water proof, it would also have an "IP" rating. For instance the Galaxy S5 has a IP67 rating, and the Sony Xperia Z3 has an IP68 rating. (Ealier Sony Experia Z phones had IP55 and IP58.)
But especially with the Sony if you try testing those ratings (dunking the phone on purpose) and the phone fails, Sony may not honor the warranty:
Abuse and improper use of device will invalidate warranty.

Sony's Xperia Z3 phone - not as waterproof as you think
http://www.abc.net.au/technology/articles/2014/10/15/4107561.htm
See more about IP ratings here: http://aceeca.com/handhelds/ip67
Neither the Moto Maxx nor Droid Turbo claim any IP rating:
Not water-resistant like the Samsung Galaxy S5, the Motorola DROID Turbo is splash-resistant
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Not-...orola-DROID-Turbo-is-splash-resistant_id62265
To reiterate, the Motorola DROID Turbo is protected from spills and light rain. But we definitely would not use this phone near a swimming pool or a bathtub.

Yes, the ballistic nylon version has Kevlar underneath. So does the metallized glass fiber version. Both have multi-material backs.

dropped my MAXX in a lake today 5" to 10" of water for about 1 or two min of digging around before i found it. Seems to be working fine. I'm going to try to not do it again, but I thought I'd share.
I confirm that at least if it has ip65 certification since if I support 12.5L of water per minute (I do not think it holds 100L per minute that asks for the ip66 and I have no way to prove it v:
it also says not to submerge, so I do not think that I kept soaking it for 30m and I don't want to take a risk either) and the truth is that it will help me so that when the cell phone gets too hot I simply put it in a jet of cold water and I already have my liquid refrigeration xd
