Everyone knows I love my Note II, quad core with dedicated GPU on a 5.5 inch 720p screen. But when the galaxy gear smart watch came out it wasn't (and still isn't officially) compatible with anything but the Note III. I decided to see if I could get it to work.
After some digging I found the .apk for the galaxy gear watch manager for the note III and low and behold it installs just fine on my Note 2:

It's not totally 100% compatible, some things I still have to work on, but it does sync contacts, take photos, show the time etc.
If you have a Samsung galaxy device and wish to get the gear, feel free to try the APK I found:

EDIT:
So I was able to update my adb sideload program I always used to use and install standard .apk files after enabling usb debug:

Here's some video of me tooling around in minecraft PE:
I didn't keep minecraft on the watch but I wanted to see if the watch could handle it.
Thus far I've installed a small calculator, and an uninstalling application to remove things I don't want to keep. I've also tried other launchers like Nova. Nova worked fine except you can't load widgets and there is no clock on the top right so the device is useless as a watch. I'll be sticking with the standard touchwiz launcher as it has a working app drawer.
I've taken the standard launcher and taken all the home screens out except for time, app drawer, and notifications so it's much more stream lined and I can get to all my apps with just one swipe. The question is, what apps do you think would be good additions to my wrist aside from calc, schedule, phone, and time? .apk links would be great too.
You can't use any apps the require a data connection as the device doesn't have wifi. I tried using pdanet tablet edition & foxfi between this and my phone via Bluetooth but it force closes unfortunately.
Can you get notifications, and which?
Still trying to figre that out. When I go into the gear manager on the phone and click "samsung apps" the manager freezes and I have to force close it.
What I can do right now is make calls, take photos / video, see my call log, tell the time. I can also see upcomming events.
I need to find a copy of the note III's s-voice to be more compatible. Anyone have an .apk? I'm not sure if it's the exact same as the s4's

I've done a lot of reading on the gear. It's not worth it at the moment, especially since the CEO himself said the gear is lacking a little "something extra." Also, due to this, they have already started working on the gear 2. Mainly, Samsung knows they screwed up big time and Apple and Google will most likely produce something better. Your meta watch and my pebble are still better at the moment. The problem is battery life is terrible. All notifications from apps other than stock email and messaging show nothing but a notification icon with a number. You have to open up even gmail on your phone because it will not display on the gear. The metawatch and pebble showed all this from day 1 and even improved with each update. Every big tech review site has given the same statement. It looks great but fails everywhere else. Maybe if it was $100, it would be a decent accessory to have until something better comes out. However, $300 is a complete waste for a subpar overly hyped product. I wanted this device, but glad I read all the reviews. Samsung is retarded also for making it only compatible with the note 3 on release. A very stupid and limited form of marketing that will only hinder their progress. Anyway, if anyone bought it, good for you. Trust me it's better to wait as mentioned in many reviews of this device. Then again, it's smart marketing in one way because people will buy it for the cool factor, and then they will upgrade to the gear 2 because it's better. Same concept on cars. Mercedes has this trick with the E class. They've already got a 6-10 year outline of the horsepower and design of each future car. That's why it's the most changed and most bought Mercedes. Think about it before you fall for the gear.

When you take photos and videos, does it get stored on local memory only, or can you transfer it to phone memory (select saving destination to N2)?
Dont believe everything you read. The gear is a perfect companion watch for the note 3 and from the post above its not bad on the note 2 and it's not even officially supported for that phone. The reviewers have really got this one wrong I have had it a week and it gets better every day

Agreed...and there are many top tech websites and comments by people like us on xda that agree with you, lol.
T-Mobile already sells it at 25% discount, but I think you have to buy it with N3. Yeah, unfortunately Samsung rushed into this one. It has potential since its based on modified Android 4.2 OS (or whatever 4.x), which means it will get hacked and modified at some point. But the price point of $300 is too high to make it mainstream now. Remember what happened to original Sony SW? Nobody cared about it until they dropped the price to $99 and opened SDK. Boom! It became affordable and open for XDA community to jump in with new app development and support. But with Gear, no matter rootable or not, you still will be limited by poor battery life, proprietary charging cradle (imagine forgetting it to take with you before even a 2 day trip?), and bracelet which is not replaceable and kind of flimsy looking with that camera sticking out asking to be bumped.
About a month ago if someone would have asked me what smart watch to buy at the current moment, I would suggest Pebble only (because of it being mainstream with developers support). Today, this answer would be Sony SW2 because of all the improvements (watersplash resistant, easily accessible standard micro-usb, great touch display where watch face can stay on permanently and you still get a decent multi-day battery life). My personal fav right now is Omate. Don't care about stand-alone phone (will never use it), but the whole idea of portable android device fully waterproof with a camera, micro-sd, and 600 mAh battery, and already released SDK ahead of official availability (and XDA developers already working on it now) - that intrigues me a lot!
Yes the Omate is certainly the most interesting at the moment with full Android 4.2. My only gripe with it is how thick it is. I really don't see me wearing a watch that size at the moment. Maybe in a few years I'll be saying it's too small but right now the SW2 is the largest I'll go.
The SW2 is sleek and does what I need which is be a companion to my phone, allowing me to leave my phone in my pocket a bit more especially with where I'm living at the moment :/. If Google (or anyone else) doesn't beat it by December, the SW2 will be my next gift to myself.
I've enjoyed the watch so far, even it being in my possession for less than 12 hours I'm still having fun with it. I very rarely make expensive purchases on a whim and although I did read a ton of reviews I wanted this watch more for my own curiosity more than anything.
My friends helped kickstart the pebble and if I would have known about it I too would have been on that bandwagon. So far the picture quality has been great, I've yet to take any videos however I can tell you that you can transfer the files from the watch to the phone seamlesly. I belive it does it for you after awhile or you can push them. I took some shots of my parent's dog I was watching today and the photos looks pretty good, especially on this small screen.
I like the fact that I can use multi-touch things like pinch-zoom etc. The audio controls are nice and when 4.3 comes out for the note II there will be even more things I should be able to do with this device. Samsung did say that the marketplace for this device will be open for app devs to make things for it specifically, and it can have a dozen or so apps installed at once.
Great feedback from everyone. I agree that the Sony Smart Watch 2 seems to be the best new option currently. It delivers on battery life, is splash resistant, can open and read notifications, esp with the notification pull down, and has the ability to see multiple apps on each screen similar to android phones and the Omate interface. It's definitely an improvement for the current smartwatch genre. It's actually also thinner than the Gear despite being boxier. I do like the Omate and the Neptune Pine, but they seem way too bulky and geared towards being stand alone devices despite Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity for use with smartphones. I just hope Google does one better.
The gear is the worst deal lol. A waste of $300

Thanks premiatul however I tried that version of s-voice and it is only the BETA (as listed in it's info page) so it won't sync. It looks like I need one taken directly from the note 3 via root or something.

I run with my pebble and sweat a lot. Pebble is totally waterproof even in the shower. That's really pathetic on Samsung's part. They clearly didn't do enough testing.
Pretty disappointed after picking up my gear last week. I'm going to give it a month before I dump mine for sale if they don't start putting out useful apps for it. Seems like half the stuff is pushed out with bugs and semi working or not working at all. Half the apps in the store (gee there really isn't much) hang on install, fail to work correctly or are just junk that you don't need. Is it really that hard to offer an app that would let you read your full email body on it, or an app that would give you facebook updates on it without reading them on the phone, or a watch making app that actually tells time and doesn't lock up 4 times a day? Samsung should just change its name to the Galaxy gear beta edition. I understand the 30% return rate on them now after owning one.

I don't really get where people find the time and energy to post like this. Get a refund and move on with your life, already.
The galaxy gear is awesome (and so is the pebble, the sony smartwatch, etc. Can't wait to see what Google and Apple do)
Samsung has really knocked this out of the park and showed us the potential of wearables - probably better than anyone - and how they're so obviously going to be the future.
Samsung has been innovating incredibly well lately. I really hope Microsoft/Google/Apple up their game and keep up!
Well...it is indeed lacking a lot of features that should be there right out of the box but I am sure you have done your research before you bought the watch. I did do my research and I am quite happy with the watch. I wouldn't buy it at $300 but at $210 with tmobile discount 30% off, this is not a bad buy at all.
I never once had a problem with installing apps from Samsung app store. Their selection is really small and apps are not that great but it never hang or fail to install for me. You can also sideload apps as long as they don't require access to internet if you don't mind some extra steps of installing.
Reading email would be a nice thing but I don't see myself using the tiny screen to read email. I would rather want to do it on the phone.
Facebook update sure would be nice.
Never lock up 4 times a day but then I don't use watch styler app or custom face.
Also please try the ATN app. It helps with all the notifications that I need the watch to show such as whatsapp and whatever others app you might need.
Could it be better ? Sure. Will it get better? Of coarse it will !
There's nothing BETA about it, its simply a new consumer product which hasn't boomed yet.. once the developers gain interest you can bet your ass your going to see some amazing stuff from the gear.
Anything Samsung related on the watch works extremely well, could they have included additional features sure. But why would they ? Its a Samsung device providing support with Samsung products/applications straight out of the box.
All the things listed can be easily resolved via software updates, or third party software. Eg. ATN.
Any complaint you have about the gear will have the same complaubt about the new sony smart watch. Its new. Do your homework before you buy something.

Eh, I love mine (got the 30% off deal) but I agree with the OP and am disappointed with the small amount of apps in the Samsung store... and at least half of it is junk. A big reason for that is because Samsung is being weird about releasing the SDK to the public, I wish they'd get on with that soon. Though I think (I hope) the situation will get a lot better soon when they release official updates for S3, S4, Note2 to make them compatible with the Gear.
I have to disagree with the OP. The gear is amazing. I don't have problems installing apps and I think some of them are pretty good like watch styler. The only thing I don't like about the gear is that it doesn't show notifications for third party apps and I hope Samsung releases an update enabling notifications for all apps.

Has all the Apps I want.
Anybody that takes the time to find this forum should know,
You do not have to get all the Apps from the Samsung Store.
A member of XDA has a solution for notifications, many people use it and like it.
Do not know about facebook, could care less about facebook.
Sounds like the OP thinks the device replaces a smartphone,
A smartwatch tells you at a glance if the message you get is worth pulling your smartphone out.
Who other than the OP, has every had any problems with the Gear Locking up?
Who other than the OP can not find a way to tell time with the Gear?

Every review is the same.. so so on it. Return rate is high also. The few that love them, great, tinker away with yours. When I can read my 3rd party apps emails, pick from 100s and 100s of apps maybe Ill dig it. Till then its a beta toy as far as im concerned. i knew it when i got it just didnt expect it to be this crappy I guess.
I'd like to know how many of the returned watches are due to either people not usually wearing a watch or because it wasn't compatible with their device
I've not had any of the problems mentioned here (mind, I didn't use watchstyler). Mic and speaker seem fine to me
Hardly any apps these days mention what has changed between versions so can't see that being a negative. Having to reset every time there is an update sucks though (however, the restore thing seems to go ok for the most part)
I just want my notifications to give more detail - mms to show pic, email to display html, sms/facebook/etc not be limited by character limit. It's all very possible going on the evidence
Couldn't care less about apps. Good to be able to sideload though

I'm loving my gear but can also appreciate where the OP is coming from. In the main I think the gear lives up to its expectations ax far as I am concerned.
The biggest issue I have is the lack of water resistance, and how it handles facebook notifications. I am hoping though that this thing gets better as time moves along. It does worry me however that work on the Gear 2 will already have started and we will end up with a non supported device quite quickly.

Hey everyone:
I have been installing and uninstalling lots of apps and widgets to determine what works on the Galaxy Gear Smartwatch. I've got my Gear Null Rom'med and connected to a Galaxy Note 1 Phone. Since I am not giving up my Note 1, the Galaxy Gear looked to be my only choice thanks to the work of the NULL ROM developer. Mostly everything on the Gear works-- except notifications, weather, and third-party contact apps. I'm looking forward to the SMS developments going on in another thread. My partner also has the same phone and Gear, so I've got two mouths to feed!
Otherwise, these are the best apps for the Gear 1 that I have found so far. I am learning some new stuff too, so there may be a part two in the near future.
Please comment, looking forward to your feedback, and I salute all of the developers who are continuing to hack the Gear device. Thanks guys!

What a fantastic and informative video as well...I can't wait to get home and try out that remote media controller as I have my note automatically connect to a decent set of Bluetooth speakers when I walk in the door. It'll be really cool to control the music from anywhere in the house..
I noticed that you are using a stock touchwizz ROM on your note. What version of gear manager are you using and with what degree of effectiveness? I am using an AOKP kitkat ROM on my note that I absolutely love and don't think I could tear myself from but I may just nandroid and try stock if you tell me that there is greater functionality..
Great video! Nicely edited and covers a lot of mysterious capabilities n features that aren't immediately obvious to beginners-including myself. Nicely done!
PS: Love Google Goggles and Price Rythem for instant product information, nutritional facts, reviews, current pricing! Either scan the bar code or take a picture of the item, and your done!
Runner up would be Pie Controls to quicky access your favorite apps. from your watch face.

Hey fellow Torontonian! Does the KitKat ROM on your Note 1 allow you to keep the S Pen features?
I can only get to Gear Manager 1.2 and basically none of the notifications work-- the Gear Manager is only able to open the Contact app on the phone. The Gear's camera app does transfer photos to the phone automatically. Nothing else works in Gear Manager. I can't give up S Note on the phone, so it hasn't been rooted since Samsung released a JB update a year ago. I wish that SMS and email notifications could work but--- but there's not really any other smartwatch that will work with the Note 1 so I accept these compromises.
Hi, I'm interested in buying a Gear 2 Neo. I just want to ask a couple of questions before purchase one because I am also torn in buying a G Watch R or Gear Live/Moto 360(if it ever becomes available locally).
Q1: Can it sideload apks and stay and work without any issues? I read somewhere that they were able to sideload some apks but after some time, the apps disappeared and could no longer be reinstalled again.
Q2: Does Watch Styler faces work with it right now especially with the latest Gear Manager app? I even already download watch styler and downloaded watch faces and there are just some comments that make me wonder if it really works for the NEO.
Q3: Is it "LAGGY"? If you have used an Android Wear watch and compared it with this, is the performance noticeably slower? I'm kind of used to the lightning speeds of my Note 3 and I can quite annoyingly obsess about little lags.
This is just my main concerns for now. I hope you guys could help me. I have already watch tons of reviews but I want an answer from people who actually is "using" it. Thanks!
Hi all,
I'm new here, and wanted to get some feedback from you experts. I own both a note 4 (for work) and iPhone 6 plus (personal) and am wanting to dabble in smart watches. More specifically, I am looking to get a smart watch for my iPhone 6 plus.
Although, I have searched the forums, YouTube, some blogs, and Google, I am still not sure what will be my best bet for a smart watch for my iPhone, and with the threads I have found, a lot seem to be half done, and a lot of comments, tests, etc, so instead of searching all over and getting to the end of a thread that asks me to check out this thread, then jump to this thread, etc, I was hoping a few of you experts could give me some advice on what will work best for my needs.
So I understand that the gear 1 or gear 2 can work with my iPhone 6, with limited capabilities, which is okay, but the info I've been reading is confusing and again was hoping some of you experts could point me in the right direction..
-so what I'm looking for is a couple things:
(A) first, find out which smart watch, gear 1 or gear 2 will work best for my needs.
(B) second, be able to add apps from outside sources such as Google play or vshare, or something other than what is in the watches stock stores. And have Internet access on these watches, which I'm assuming I could do by adding a browser via one of these stores on the smart watch.
(C) third, which ever smart watch I chose, I would like it to do as much as it is intended to, however, I understand that the gears only do limited functions. With that said, I'm hoping you guys can enlighten me which Samsung gear will work best with my iPhone 6? Should i be getting gear 1 or gear 2?
(D) and forth, definite directions, or links, on what I need to do to make either the gear 1 or gear 2 work with my iPhone 6. (I have seen several threads and will use those once I can get definite info on what I need to do to the gear 1 or gear 2, or my iPhone, etc to use them with each other)
-please correct me, but what I understand so far is:
(A)for gear 1 and using with iPhone 6:
-I've read that the gear 1 will work with iPhone 6, if I root the Samsung gear 1 using null rom or other?, jb iPhone 6, install cloud notifier from big boss repo, use mi wifi or Bluetooth teathering, on the iPhone, and need to activate the watch using an android phone first. And get an account for pushing notifications, but not sure which are myoptins for that..
(A2) side loading apps or using vshare store for additional apps?
-I also saw a YouTube video that shows I can side load apks on gear 1, easier than on the gear 2 because gear 1 uses android and gear 2 uses tizen. If that's the case, then I'm thinking the gear 1 would satisfy my desire to side load apps. I also didn't see anyone mention if they have tried to install vshare and install apps from that store? (Either by side loading vshare and or from a browser?)
(B) for gear 2 and using iPhone 6:
-I've only see a few definite threads, and videos, where they use the gear 2 wight their iPhone. So I'm confused if the gear 2 will work or not? And also, I thought I read or saw someone say for gear 2, you root the phone and don't need to jb the iPhone, to use with iPhone or any other android phone? And also read that some say they were able to get them connected simply by using BT, make visible, etc. but again, the threads seem to go on with issues and nothing ever definite on what works..
-so basically not sure if the gear 2 will work with I phone 6??
(B2) side loading apps on gear 2?
-I've read the side loading only works with gear 1 because it's android. So is there a way to sideload apps on gear 2/tizen? Would you be able to use a browser on the watch and install vshare store from their website, like you would on any android device? Or what's the verdict on side loading apps on the gear 2? Less flexible because it's not android OS? Or??
Misc: (I'm not too excited about getting a pebble steel watch as it just doesn't do it for me).
And finally, Based on the info you guys provide, I'm looking at either Galaxy gear 1 or gear 2 to use with my iPhone. And if all else fails may just go with a cheap Chinese smart watch that would work with my iPhone. But that wouldn't satisfy me unless I could side load apps and/or root those either and have found limited info on rooting some of the China smart watches like zgpax, or u watches.
I know I might not get all that I'm looking for, and even if so, may have limited things working, but with that said, what's your guys advice? Gear 1, gear 2, or some other China smart watch that should work with iPhones? (Don't know if I'll ever go Apple watch, but if I do, it won't be first gen and/or until the price drops 6 months after release, so yeah, looking for something good to hold me over until then, that will require some tech work on my end...)
Sorry if this has already been asked, but I'm still confused after all the threads I've read as mentioned and still lost lol. If this thread needs to go to another part of the forums, please move. Cmon experts please chime in! Thanks in advance and sorry I'm not a developer, just a curious geek that likes the info on this site!!!
