Email client - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone with the phone share what the email client is like for exchange. If I recall correctly, what came with the original x was missing some features like conversation view.

I can't. But I'm sure its going to be just like any stock 4.4.4 email client and be lacking as you mention. The best thing I ever did was try nine exchange and it is awesome. Like stock but with all the features you wish you had.

Yea I did the nine trial but trying to not buy more stuff lol

Mail...what's better than the native

Looking for a better email client than the native..free would be nice, the default one doesn't seem to refresh correctly. The Hero native one looked promising but went back to cupcake instead
Any suggestions since you guys have been using it longer than I have (since Sunday)
you can try K-9 seems to work really well. is based on the native client but seems to work better worth a try.

I'd recommend K9. Had it since it was first released onto the market, it's an excellent app. in my opinion.
the htc mail app is excellent. see the rogers rom.
Another vote for K9 Mail. Latest version that's not yet on the market has nice improvements and fixes.
The HTC mail app was pretty nice when I loaded the Hero rom on but I took it off since it ran to slow, is there a way to get just the mail app?
I tried out k9 and I like it and works pretty well...don't really care for the icon but that's something I can live with lol

Likely origins of the icon: link. The devs must be Doctor Who fans
Ah yea looks pretty similiar...works well though, much better than the default with my 4 other email accounts

Android Exchange Apps

what apps do people use on their phones that support ms-exchange?
I know of
Touchdown
Roadsync
Moxier
I think thats it,
What i'm after specifically is support for multiple folder push, i'm not so bothered about the calendar, just the multi folder push
I look forward to your suggestions

hahahahaha. Do you know what exchange is and how it is supposed to work?
yea stock android exchange support is fairly lame, certainly compared to the iOS offering
I installed touchdown again and that does what I need but it makes my eyes bleed!
Has anyone tried modding the stock exchange support?
I'm not a coder so I was kinda dropping a subtle hint

[Q] Rooted tonight and got CM6. I feel so screwed.

The phone is fast. Everything is smooth - but I may have to unroot. There needs to be an instruction manual or something. Here are my problems. I really hope you can help me!
I cant get my charter mail to come in. I have tried numerous settings. So far none work. This is VERY important to me.
I cant figure out how to get my contacts. I generally keep them in Outlook. Tonight in an effort to make it work, I exported them to Gmail. How can I get them to go from Gmail contacts to the phone?
How do I get the Market, GPS and other apps back. I guess if I have the Market I can get the other stuff...
Thanks very much - many frustrating hours tonight...
Did you install gapps?
Like the guy said above... You install gapps (google apps). It is a separate download, usually located in the same post as CM6. Flash it like you would a rom. It will install all google apps (market, gmail, and so on including the files for google to work). Google apps can not be included in an AOSP rom by legal means if there is any changes within the rom (such as cm6).
But once you get gapps installed, all you do is sign into your google account and it will auto sync contacts, email, and calendar. Also market will show all paid apps.
http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?type=gapps here are the gapps you need the mdi version...
Ok - things are getting better. Here is what I have done.
I downloaded Google Apps. I also copied / synced my contacts from Outlook to Google Mail. I really prefer them just on Outlook because it seems more secure. Anyway - I now have the contacts which beats not having them, even though it is not the way I wanted. I can live with it I guess.
The Charter email is still VERY important to me, if someone can help with that.
Also can somebody refer me to a good (hopefully free) clock and weather widget - hopefully similar to the one that was on Sense. Separate widgets is fine.
Thanks again.
Its OK to feel screwed, but your anger is directed to cm6 and not sprint! Sprint is the one who I am feeling screwed by, they still sell this phone full price online but refuse to support like the full priced phones are getting Anyway, just flash gapps and then when you reboot from that you will be prompted to sign into gmail, the market will be there again, and after 5 or so minutes your contacts will be there.

Charter is a POP3 email correct? You will have to google "set up Charter email on outlook" use the settings it gives you for the email app in cm6. I know them for comcast but not charter, my comcast works fine on here
You are absolutely right about Sprint. I generally have had a good experience with them for years but they really stuck people wiht the Hero. I am just looking for a way to make it tolerable and then I will replace the phone. At this time I am looking at going back to Blackberry. Anyway, I did google the settings but it still doesnt work. Hopefully somebody has a Charter email account working that can tell me exactly what they had to do.
Found exactly what i needed for charter email
Hopefully this will help somebody else with Charter Email on Android. I found it on another forum and it worked like a champ!
Here are the instructions and if you follow them to the letter, you will solve your Charter email problem and get the POP3 email setup properly:
"IGNORE what Charter said the address is for Incoming and Outbound. pop.charter.net and smtp.charter.net will ONLY allow you to RECEIVE, when you try to compose, reply, reply all, forward, you will get a error, and it will NOT go out.
the correct settings should be:
Mail Type: POP
Incoming Mail Server: mail.charterinternet.com
Username: [email protected] (first part of your email address DO NOT omit the @charter.net)
Password: whatever the password is to access the charter email account
Port: 110
Encryption: None
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.charterinternet.com
Authentication: ON
Username: [email protected] (first part of your email address DO NOT omit the @charter.net)
Password: whatever the password is to access the charter email account
Port: 25
Encryption: none"
the constant complaining about sprint and the hero is comical, its the equivalent of hiring a cleaning lady and expecting her to paint the whole house for 99 bucks. I paid less for the hero than I did my previous phone wich was the lotus. In other words if you dont like something break out your wallets and get the Evo. And of course dont for get to complain about the Evo too!
+1 on xjayman. Read all the other posts on other carriers and phones. None is perfect, you got cheaper service with no signals, better signals but higher prices, crappy phones no support blah blah blah. Personally I love my phone, especially it being rooted. If you want sense based froyo wait for the wildfire port. If u want it now buy an evo. For all the things that cm6 doesn't have built in there is a widget you can get to make up for it.

Also, to make your phone look better check out the gold and black theme by Impaler, very nice!

xjayman - I agree that you can't expect every feature from every phone. The issue with the Hero is it does not perform as promised - not even close. People were screwed that bought this - not because the didnt get the be all and end all to everybody but because the phone (as it was sold) failed to live up to the promises of Sprint and HTC because the lag was unbearable (God help you in a 911 situation) , the bluetooth doesnt work for $%#, and other basic failures to perform. You should have to pull out your wallet for the newest and the greatest - not to get what you were already promised.
That being said, since I rooted a couple of days ago, this thing is light years ahead of how it performed and what it could do when I bought it. I am not a phone techie and, as a result of having tight financial constraints, I had to spend many hours to learn how to root and load a rom, etc. so I could get the phone to do what it should have done 'out of the box'. That is where the resentment comes in.
no, the price of the evo isnt a deterant...i just figured that i didnt want to carry a brick in my pocket...THAT THING IS HUGE. plus, as far as size and features, the hero WAS a mid to upper phone when alot of us got them. now with people being tied up in contracts and so forth, we are bound to this device< unless you just want to get a different phone off contract and switch> i think having a "custom" phone is far better.i love it when a evo owner is talking about, "MY PHONE DOES THIS AND THAT" and i am able to say mine does too, and its smaller, and less a month! Now if sprint offered the incredible or something smaller but more powerful,, i would prob beat my hero with a bat. im not being a ****, its just my reasoning...

Search for Fancy Widget 1.30 on 4shared.com, that'll give you a very good approximation of the Sense UI clock/weather widget.
For clock, use Retro clock. Small and handy. Or, use beautiful widgets. Not like sense, but they have a lot of cool options.

This. And get LauncherPro Plus through the market or otherwise and you won't miss sense at all.

It's not even that at this point. At this point it's like hiring a cleaning lady you know won't/can't paint your house, then complaining when she doesn't.
Anyone buying a hero recently (which isn't still "full price" anywhere, fyi) should know what they're getting into, or it's their own damn fault. These idiotic notions of "Sprint didn't tell us about all the problems" are just bizarre. You really expect HTC Hero commercials and the like to point out the fact that the phone is underpowered and thus laggy, and so on? Please.
That is what review sites are for. Same as cars, all other electronics, etc.
I asked the sprint store if the hero was thw best phone they have or if there is a new phone coming soon when I bought mine. They said its top of the line. 3 weeks later. The evo dropped. Called to complian because my phone stock is unusable. Yes unusable. And that there was a better phone out when I specifically asked and was told, no new phones would be out for awhile. They said hey no prob come on in and we can replace your hero for the evo. I said. Great be there Saturday. Showed up on. Saturday and was informed that Friday was my cutoff date and I would have to pay $449 to get a evo. Sprint sux so you jackasses saying its our fault can go stick a meatpole in their mouth.

How come 90% of your posts are you *****ing? If you didn't like the hero you should have returned it. Its up to the consumer to research a product, and up to a salesperson to sell it.

[Q] Can You Use CLIENT Certificates with Xoom Mail Client

We are thinking about getting a Xoom at the office but were curious if the honeycomb mail client can support client certificates. Can anyone confirm or deny this. I know that previous versions could not and so far secure eas is the only way we can use them other than with Touchdown.
Thanks
I have to use touchdown with mine, google sucks at the enterprise client

Exchange SSL is a server side certificate that validates the identity of the server. Client side certificates validate the identity of the client TO the server. They are different animals, this was explained to me in the MOTO forums and there is in fact like half a dozen people working on this very issue.
The short term solution is 3rd party as already mentioned.
Moto is working that or google is?

People at MOTO are working with at least one particular user in their forums.
this is a huge thorn in our side as a secure corporation
I tried the app secure eas (which works great on froyo on the incredible) but it is soooo unstable. I know that we can use touchdown, but i wish we had a free version. Just sounds as though the client certs are not even thought about... kinda rediculous.

Well if the company is that hardcore about security they can probably kick in 15 bucks for the e-mail app. That's my initial knee-jerk reaction to such a statement. To my knowledge, the MOTO team has gotten nowhere on this FWIW and the issue I'm sure goes back to the default mail client just not being up to par for it.
To be perfectly honest, it's not all that suprising to me.

Well it is a combination of two things...
1 - the company wants to be secure and because of it (like many other companies) is all Blackberry at this time.
2 - I cant stand freaking bberry devices so I am trying to get the devices to connect to exchange and in a way we can control and monitor.
With that said, how the hell can the iphone support client certs and android cant? Especially when there are like 10 mail apps out there... the only one that does... oh of course... the one you have to pay for.
I am not saying paying is out of the question, but it sure would be nice to tout that free price tag.

Well it's a misconception that any ipad app worth a **** is free, they're not... I own one.
There's also no "free" anything going on here... you bought an $800 Xoom to get around using your companies crappy blackberrys and I would do the same lol. for less than 5% of the total purchase you can complete the experience. Just do it and get it over with lol.

Best EWS email app

Anyone have any luck with any EWS clients? I've been using AquaMail, which works well, but is tough on the battery. It must be an OWA or EWS compatible app. The reason for this is, any Activesync app causes my companies security policies to ban my email access because I do not have Maas360 installed. I refuse to install Maas360 and give my company that much access to my personal phone. Also, it wont work with my device being rooted. I would also prefer the app handles email like AquaMail does. Thanks for any recommendations.
I wish there was a way to make NineMail work, that app is excellent.

I just recently installed the exchangesservices.apk and it runs through my GMail app. Works fine, no issues. I used this one here and just installed like normal.
Thanks @palosjr. Does your work email have extensive security features? Ill try it and see how it works for me. How do you stay on top of app updates? Thanks.

We are pretty locked down... our IT department is tough when it comes to permissions and such.
Normally I just keep a look out on reddit.com/r/android and when I see that an update for Play Services has been released, I look into it and see what it entails.

Unfortunately, this did not work. I got it installed and setup. Got my emails synced and bam! Blocked by Maas360. My experience has shown me that if the app doesn't access email via OWA or EMS, I will get blocked. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Best is always samsung stock for me. It can show my company contacts name company position numbers etc. There ia no app can do that. And colored signature.
I tried boxer (cm mail app now), cloudmagic, nine, gingermail. None of them work likw i want it to. If your company have office 360 work you can use Microsoft app ews outlook. Ita really nice and themed like windows phone.
Just happened to come across this post in a Google search and hoping someone could ban the following spammers that posted above..
The OP specifically said no ActiveSync apps and specifically not Nine (which uses ActiveSync). CloudMagic / Newton Mail is a SpyWare / email harvesting application that collects your mail on their servers.
So, the posts from these individuals are spam:
