Hi,
I seem to have found a way to stop the ridiculous lag on the camera, although I'm not sure this will work for everyone.
I have a non-standard version of the Camera software installed (I think it's the Touch version from somewhere on here - not sure who, I'm pretty new here so please forgive me), but I've noticed that if I start the camera up, then put the device into standby for a few seconds, then turn it back on again, the camera is *far* more responsive, and this is for both still images and for video.
I have no idea why this is - someone more technically intimate with the Kaiser can probably shed some light on it, but it seems to work for me.
The only downside I can see is that it makes the low-light compensation stop working, but in situations with plenty of light there's no difference whatsoever in image/video brightness.
Andy.
Ya, weird how this works. This work around was discussed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=365345
camera is ugly?
my camera quality is so ugly i have one of the newsest camera software installed. i dont mean the lag or anything i just mean the camera quality is so blurry and unclear i have sharpness on high and styll :S
when i press a camera button to take a picture and it auto focuses before the green thing comes for juss like half a second everything is clear buh then becomes super blurry. any suggestions or is jus broken
Dear fellas,
Although this topic has been briefly discussed in various locations, it hasn't gotten "big" enough.
I know a number of ya guys are having this problem. The touch-sensitive action button used to focus does not focus the camera (and yes, I have set it to "touch & press").
Mine works intermittently, in fact, doesn't work most of the time. I know it's 100% not a hardware problem, as the button lights up and brightens up my screen according to normal behavior. Now I'm wondering, for those guys who don't have this problem, do U have a different version of the camera app?
K.. mine's the stock HK 1.93.831 ROM and my cam app is version 6.00 (build 31516).
I'm not sure what causes this problem. Although I'm not a camera freak, but this prob makes my baby "imperfect".
Pls post yr ROM and camera version (I wonder if there's a difference) and state if youre experiencing this problem. Thanks!
Hi MasK,
I'm having the same problem as you, the "touch & press" feature didn't work most of the time.
I'm using HTC SG ROM 1.37.871.3, camera version 6.0 (Build 31364).
I used to think the camera didn't focus properly until I took some time to play with it. It's pretty slow, but mine seems to work. When I touch the button, it will take anywhere from 1-5 seconds to focus, and then the cross-hair turns green and beeps to indicate focus lock. At first I didn't realize I needed to wait for the beep, so my shots were out of focus. Seems to work fine now that I know that.
I'm currently on stock 1.37.401.3 with camera 6.0 Build 31364 ... same as previous post, just a different ROM region, which I doubt makes a difference.
i have a similar problem where i run the camera app, then the 1st time i place my thumb over the button nothing happens, but if i take my thumb away and try again it will work fine.
It will continue working fine untill i restart the camera app, just never registers the 1st attempt.
This does show that there is some serious prob with this functionality. For me, it's the first time that has a higher chance of working.. not subsequently.
How abt the rest? We needa find out what's causing this!
upz...
Anymore ppl having this prob?
Same here. Most of the time, including 1st time also fails.
+1, most of the time I have to click on the button to do the focus + photo. When I just touch, the camera tries to focus but the square doesn't become green. Sometimes there's no white square at all.
Hi,
mine recognizes the first touch so it focuses correctly but after i take the picture, it doesn't focus anymore when i touch it. actually i just found out about this focus thing and tested. until now i always just pressed the button when trying to make pictures and it always makes a focus and then capture the image. is this OK or it makes them better if i first let him focus and then press the button all the way?
p.s. i do have "touch and press" selected.
p.s.2: is there any way i can change exposure time or something like that so my pictures won't get blurry when my hand shakes or something? many of my pictures are fuzzy because i don't really have a steady hand :-s
Best regards,
Florin

Yep that's how it works and I don't seem to be having problems, just tried doind a few shots and it works perfectly.
Everytime I touch the center button the white square appears and the camera does the autofocus until it turns green. Then I change the orientation and do the same again. I just did it 6 times in a row and the autofocus worked perfectly all the times.
I had this problem with all my previous ROMs.. I am now on Bepe's 0.96 which has the latest camera app and the problem is no longer there - I can touch and press to activate the autofocus as many times as I want after shooting as many photos as I want. No problems now.

Cool.. so it goes to show it's a pure firmware issue. I'm wondering perhaps it's due to registry tweakings that creates this problem.
Any more feedbacks?
Is there a difference in quality if it makes the focus on touch and picture on press versus focus and picture on press?

No difference in quality, however with the "touch-then-press" focus you see a focused picture on the display before taking the shot.
Mask,
Can you tell me what is the camera app version in Bepe's 0.96 Rom?
I just changed the camera capture setting to "press" rather then "touch and press".
Now all I have to do is point at what i want. Then just press the button down and it does all the auto focussing itself and then takes the pic.
Couldn't be easier.

I actually prefer the 'touch and press' option, because I might end up needing to re-adjust my position before taking the shot.. and having the 'touch' to autofocus, before 'press' to shoot allows me to do so.
@MasK: I don't think it's a firmware issue or related to registry tweaks, but more a issue related to the camera app - bepe noted that it was a newer version (thus you won't see the Resolution icon in the Settings anymore - you can still change the resolution via Advanced settings). You could ask bepe more about the camera app and whether he did any tweaking in regards to the camera.

Yeah I know what your saying, I tend to just point n click, let it auto-focus once clicked and take the pic. As long as I'm pointing at what I want and I'm as far zoomed in as I choose then it's fine. I'll take a load at a time and then just delete the unwanted ones later.
But none the less I think the general point is that everything should work!

Quite right. I do not see why HTC overlooked this problem. Seems to me that HTC rushed the release of the Diamond without going through more intense test phases.

Completely agree, it's plain to see now that the phone was rushed. I know for a fact that if I hadn't found this site and wasn't able to flash the thing with new ROMS and applications etc then I probably wouldn't of bought it.
In effect this site is doing the work that HTC should of done in the 1st place. We shouldn't be finding ways around their problems by simply saying "oh doing it this way doesn't bother me". It would of been nice to have the thing working smoothly from release.
But then again this is half the fun right? Mucking around with new ROMs and apps to set it up how each individiual likes.
I know that I would feel sorry for anyone with a brand new HTC Touch Diamond that is still at factory settings!
The one I am running now pisses on the phone it was 2 weeks ago
So which version of Camera is best and includes the ability Auto Focus, i know there is Low FPS problems and thats a hardware thing, but i just want to know the best version of camera available, Thanks
I will respond since no one else seems interested...
Ironically, I am using the default camera app right now (4.x I believe). I tried Nadavi's 5.0.4 for several months, and it seemed faster than 4.x, but I eventually realized that auto-focus was really crippled in that version as well (half-press of the button to focus, but full press causes a re-focus before the picture is taken, which always causes me to lose the shot).
Long story short, 4.x doesn't seem to have the problem, so I decided to stick with it for now. Plus it takes pictures at a decent speed when the lighting is adequate.
Short answer... you cannot expect a Hyundai to win a Nascar race. Sure it will drive around the track, and if you want to do 500 laps with it, no problem, but it ain't ever gonna be the right tool you need to win.
The camera on this phone sucks, it has serious limitations. If you want to take a picture of a significant event, bring a stand alone camera.
I agree with the previous poster, the default camera software is about as good as you can do.
I am with you about the half press and full press problem , but i get over it by making the option of taking the photo is press half press only and it work so well.. its auto focus then take a pic with no blur at all.. i am using this ver attached. so well in TYTN II .
also now i can take photos using the front camera with it .

I quite agree, but I need to mention that the camera on EVERY phone sucks. If you're buying a phone because of the camera, that's waste of money. You can't expect this tiny bit of lens (more than ten times smaller than the ones used in real cameras and of dubious quality) to produce anything but lousy images. The problem is not with the software, but with the CCD and the lens.
I have this phone for about 6 months and I haven't taken a single picture with it - I prefer my Pentax

Hi
Got my Hd 7 from o2 pay as you go
Am quiet happy with it, but has anyone noticed that the camera is a bit rubbish or is it jjust me
Camera snaps close up are super brilliant. but the moment you try to snap far away subjects its all blurish
Its seems to have a digital zoom which just blows up to picture to distortion
I have noticed that even the zoom function just blurs it up as well
feed back would be appreciated
It's indeed not the best WP7 camera but it's not too rubish also. It should be no more than decent (while to video recording with continued focus is ace) . Can you provide a sample so we can judge ?
There was also a pink-camera isue with an earlier HTC device (can't remember the exact model) and problem was solved with a quick update.

camera on hd7 does suck... tend to bluish every single shot unless u play with scene mode .... thats one of the reason im trying something else .. maybe focus
Hmm.. do you think that it will be possible that they release an update for this?
Not too keen on getting it if the camera is useless.
I have the awesome pink hue issue with mine... and for the other guy... the other phone with the pink problem was the HD2.
anyone know if this is just the software or is the hardware?
ive noticed too that on long distance shots its horrible on keeping focus of the picture. Though i think that maybe because metering is set to center and it cant focus in that much in the distance.
Though your every day snaps are usually ok for me. No problems with tints or anything and i find the video quality to be decent
I haven't had any problems at all with taking photos on my HD7 - no focussing issues, near or far.
Are you guys half-pressing the camera button to focus first, before pressing it the rest of the way to take the photo?
This seems to be the biggest cause of issues, people not realizing it's a two-stage shoot process, just like with digital cameras.
Note to the OP: Metering is actually light metering and has nothing to do with focussing. If you have metering set to centre, the camera will adjust the exposure according to the brightness of the object in the centre of the shot. If metering were set to "average" it would work out the brightness of the whole frame and set the exposure to that. Nowt to do with focus.
Incidentally, don't forget to ensure the lens is free of dust, fingerprints and other crud as that will obviously make your pics look mushy.
nope i always press on the first stage and let it focus and then press
There seems to be issues with focusing on objects on the 13MP camera of this new X.
I was trying to take some snaps in really good lighting of my old Moto X so I could throw it on eBay but I just couldn't get it to focus at all. In the end, I had to enable the object mode.
I agree. I have the same problem takes forever to focus. That is really the one big let down of this phone. The camera sucks. My friends new Iphone 6 which is only 8 mega pixel takes way better photos..

it is sad, because the LG G2 has the same problem, after a while with an update to kitkat they improved focusing speeds, but still not close to being fast.
ANd new motoX uses the same camera chip that is in the G2.... allthough with some modification to camera software through custom roms and camera firmware, it gets better.
When and if someone will mod this camera is a question... so sad to hear this as I was planning on getting new motox, as i own the old one now and its an amazing smooth phone with bad camera...
It really is a shame other than the camera I love the phone. Switched from nexus 5 cause I wanted an amoled display
I'll download the Google camera app to see if it's any better.
If not, I might get in contact with Motorola about it being a defect to see if they help.
Y'all know there's a setting to manually focus right? It puts out a crosshair that you drag around to adjust focus wherever you want in the viewfinder. Very handy, the entire experience makes more sense now.

Yes this is the only way to get any focus. The normal camera mode doesn't really focus properly which is more my concern.
Camera Zoom FX
So first thing I did upon getting this phone was tried take a bunch of pictures. I am a heavy phone camera user (I have cats), but I realize the drawbacks of using a camera on a phone. The stock camera is just terrible, even with the focus cross hairs. It just takes pictures whenever you tap the screen and I am not cool with that, especially when I am trying to take a close up shot. I messed with lighting etc. no luck.
I tried google camera. Still eh. Google camera is better though.
I decided to try Camera Zoom FX and it works really well. Pictures are amazing in comparison to stock camera.
Overall, If you are just taking landscape/scenery shots then stock camera is good. For anything close up, try Camera Zoom FX.
With focus control activated it works good for me.
