Moto assist - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it supposed to read text messages to you when you are actively using the phone? It is driving me absolutely nuts. It takes over the screen and announces the text

I'm lonely and don't get many txt... so I don't know.... I know it reads me the sms I get from tmobile when I pay my bill.

If you're actually using the phone, you can pull down the notification tray and tap the button to dismiss the Assist functionality, e.g. "I'm not driving" if you're riding in the car with someone else.

I'm referring to being home. It makes no sense. It knows I'm at home, which is in the notification tray. Say the phone is sitting on the counter, it will read texts to me - great. Now, I'm using the phone, browsing the web, etc. Someone text messages me and Moto Assist takes over the screen and announces to me, even though I'm already at the phone. Makes no sense.

Ah I see what you're saying. Perhaps that feature could use a bit of tweaking.
But isn't there at least an option to tell it to turn off?

I don't think you are understanding my point. I want this to happen but not if i'm HOLDING and USING the phone. It makes no sense.

I turned it off. Like you said, if it reads it while I'm using my phone, it makes no sense. Maybe in the future it can use the IR sensors to detect your face and not read messages aloud

Is there anyway to disable that? Also is this an lte device?

pretty sure that's gonna require a custom ROM.
When there is a notification, the att icon is hidden temporarily. So maybe take an app that displays battery level or sth for now and wait for custom rom.
So if I had a weather app or something that would hide the att nonsense? Two things holding me back from getting this that stupid att symbol and no 4.3.

Nope, it's evolved to always be there regardless of actual notifications.
Honestly, to me, the AT&T logo in the status bar and the empty space when on wifi are the only problems with this phone.
The AT&T logo just really pissing me off... They already branded the back why shove it in our faces?
All I ask is for a rom with these two issues fixed, and nothing else touched. Then I would be at your mercy : )

I pretty much agree. It's a shame all these android devices get so close to "perfect" and let AT&T or Verizon or whoever ruin it.

Most people don't realize how powerful carriers are in the United States. They have a disease that needs to be eradicated gradually. The Moto X is the most unmolested contracted phone to ever hit AT&T through direct subsidy. Its a cause to celebrate, although artifacts of molestation do exist in the form of the AT&T logo on the back of the phone, the text in the notification center, and the 2 apps that come pre-installed.

the 'gap' however, is a Moto thing. So that will remain even on the dev edition unless someone fixes it.

The gap is such a weird thing. I swore off moto so I've not seen it in a while, it seems so lazy.

Yes they are, and they do need to be cut down bigtime.
I don't buy my computer from comcast or my bathtub from the water co. I'm ready for them to be nothing more than dumb pipes.
I try to buy things from the google play store just to support some positive change in the US's wireless model.

Yea the gap is crazy. On the One, you see the 4G LTE logo the whole time, so there is no gap, but you constantly see the 4G even when on WiFi.
not sure why the logo bothers so many folks......
if I had to choose I would rather have the logo than the soft and purple camera.
patiently waits for my 32 gig black on black so that I can moan about the camera and celebrate the remainder of the phone.

The camera is one OTA update away from being on par or better than the GS4 and iPhone. Little too much processing, and runs up the ISO high which introduces noise in low-light situations. Add in a little more saturation for colors, and they're golden.

Nope, mine's perfect in the build department (for once)! But Motorola accidentally sent me someone else's phone as well, and that one had a huge gap between the front and back on the left side of the phone. I tried to snap it in to no avail. I feel bad for the person who is getting that one.

Are they giving you an advanced replacement or do you need to send your phone back first? Also, how's your vibrate motor? Is it loud and obnoxious?

waiting to see, but I imagine it will be advanced replacement,
Vibrate motor seems about the same as any other phone I've owned. My HTC One is louder.
Mine isn't so much squeak as when I push down on the ATT logo you can hear the sticky get pushed down then that awful sound as it lets go again, trying to decide if it's worth the RMA effort.

Voice cutting out on other end of call?

Is anyone experiencing this? A significant number of people over on the Android Central forum are experiencing their voices cutting out pretty frequently, especially when there's background noise. To clarify, the people on the other end of the line are saying that the person with Moto X's voice is intermittently dropping out.
Some are speculating that it's a problem with the noise cancelling software.

Well, I think it'll be fixed by software at some point, apparently the bug isn't being exhibited when using voip apps (Skype, csipsimple, etc)...
Not having any of those problems
Motorola is aware of the problem and working on a fix:

Allow me to be thanked. For cdma versions (VZ and rogers) go to phone then settings and disable voice privacy. First it's BS anyway since cdma to cell is digitized anyway with basic encryption. Second the 48key encryption method I think called is95 umm sucks! It's uses bandwidth on a network that has none and causes breakup and delay. It's an immediate night and day difference.

Thank you for that tip. I was so frustrated with my phone cutting out on the other end I was ready to throw this one in the trash. I exchanged my phone once already because of the call quality and I was on the verge of making the switch to another phone altogether.
Since turning off privacy I no longer have the issue. Thank you!

It doesn't matter because this doesn't fix anything. I'm on Verizon and every phone call I have people complain. I can tell they can't hear me, because I'm asking questions and they just sit there silent. Its really annoying. Especially since I shelled out $705 for a Developer Edition and I can't even use it for its main function.
I really hope Verizon pushes out this update soon.
Mine still does it...
Hey everyone, I know it's been a year since this thread has abruptly stopped (to which I credit an OTA update that fixed the voice cutting in and out issue)...but...I just bought a moto x and my phone is doing it. I have the latest OTA software, stock everything, and I pretty much have to yell for my voice to get above the noise cancellation level to be heard on the other end of the phone call. Interestingly enough, if I speak directly into the mic on the backside of the phone, I come through loud and clear.
I've tried the "voice privacy" setting to no avail. I've tested all (three!) of the mics with the phone's built-in "CQATest" app and can confirm that all three are working. I've spoken with motorola support, cleared my cache, did a full factory reset, and still no dice. Can anyone help?? I hate to send this thing back because I'm almost certain that it's a software issue and not a hardware issue.
Thanks in advance, this is frustrating!! If I don't get replies then I'll start a new thread, seeing as this one is old.
[edit] update: I got a replacement phone and everything works fine. Turns out it was the hardware. I have a suspicion that the used phone I bought had its screen replaced, and it messed up the noise-cancelling features of the mics.

HIs and Hers Moto X: what happens when you talk?

So you have his and her's Moto X sitting on their respective nightstands across the bed from each other. You say "OK Google... remind me to buy penis wash!"
What happens? Do both of them activate and add the reminder? Can you train them?

My roommate has been trying to get mine to trigger on his voice since I got it, and it hasn't yet. I think we sound somewhat similar, and he's tried to imitate me and it doesn't work. If I alter my voice a little bit (higher or lower) it doesn't always work either.
I was pretty happy with how well it worked in a loud bar last night as well. The football game was on, lots of people around making noise, etc. I was holding my phone with my hands resting on the table (18-20" from my face and said "OK Google Now" in my normal speaking volume, and then said my search term, and it worked fine.

I'm curious as to how it will interface with wear. If when they go out of range or (preferably) the victim is able to make a small gesture the phone locks and can't be unlocked until the wearable is reunited AND the password are re-entered. To me that seems like the ideal.
Then again I would love for smart lock to do a better job of using relative signal strength of estimating how far away the wearable and would automatically lock them outside that zone of control.
Ultimately, I think these two things are sort of right there and just need to be brought together.
Got it on my 5.1 Nexus 6.
Not working that reliably at the moment.
When set on the table and the screen turns off, it doesn't lock automatically...
