Using the Omar ROM, I've been running into this weird issue that the Media app (Media storage, Downloads, DRM, etc.) would run using all CPU, noticeably overheat my phone and drain battery — in Running Apps, it's shown that the MediaScannerService is running, but I couldn't find a way to disable just that while keeping useful functionality of the application intact.
If I kill the application, things calm down, and I can use my phone just fine until the next reboot.
Anyone else with this problem?

All of a sudden today in my battery usage, "Media Server" is 2nd only to the display and the phone temp will climb from 89f to 120f or more just sitting there not in use. I looked to see what was running but nothing out of the ordinary shows up under running services. I also can't quite figure out what "media server" is or what would make it run like that. Any ideas or links would be really appreciated.
running GB continuum rom with the latest talon.
Check for updates to your apps, also have you installed any new apps?

I did install a few games and I also tried the gps fixes I found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272141[/URL] .
After I noticed the heat from the phone I looked at batt usage, saw the "media server" and immediately uninstalled the games. then I rebooted into recovery and cleared caches and volt settings (just in case) and rebooted. It instantly started to climb in temp after the phone was done loading up.
Since it says "media" I also cleared app cache for the music app and for the video app but no change. Have also pulled the battery a few times.
I would try flashing shomans revert file from the continuum site (use the one for the version of continuum you are running). If that doesn't work, only thing I know to try would be reflashing the ROM.
Still having this issue off and on with no real pattern. I would appreciate any info on "media server" what it is, does or what app might use it.
I recently moved to HellyBean. It has behaved fabulously on my Captivate. But I'm not sure I want to stay here because of one issue - without killing it (by hand or automatically), the media scanner runs continuously now (continuous 100% cpu usage). This takes the battery down really, really fast. When I have the process killed, battery life is extraordinary!
But I'd like to solve this if possible. Is there a chance it isn't HellyBean or JellyBean related (the way the multiple copies of music was an ICS issue)? The fact that no one else reports anything similar would make me think it's possible. If so, can anyone suggest what might be the issue.
Or what might be the other problems I might anticipate with the media scanner off. It sees my music, and seems to play everything. Camera works fine.
I did a scandisk of my removable SD, and it found no errors, and still gives the same issue on scanning - never stops.
This happened to me on GB with Corn Kernel 7.06a. I booted into recovery, cleared both dalvik cache and system cache, then booted and media scanner went through its startup normally.
you orobably know this:
it takes a long time to boot the first time after clearing caches. just wait for it to finish.

Thanks for the idea. Thought I had probably tried it before, but it was worth another shot. Unfortunately, it didn't work. CPU usage still pegs out at 100% until I shut her down.
maybe try freezing media storage app with TiBu or system tuner then reboot. Then you can troubleshoot without cpu tied up?
have you booted with external sd card removed?
if you can't freeze it due to cpu tied up, then boot into recovery, turn off init.d, syscontrl tweaks, oc, and whatever else to see if it helps.

Two good ideas. The external sd was fine. But I had some crap in the init.d (I don't know how, I thought I had cleared it on the flash) that wasn't decipherable. Deleted that, booted up, and it's fine now. Mega thanks.
Problem is cleared - thread can be closed now, moderator.
I have this same issue on a Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S II:

I have been using the note 3 4G since 3 weeks now and everything works smoothly apart from the lag that present in different situations and I can conclude those situations right now to share it with you guys so we can have the best experience out of this device.
The apps that has been lagging for me yet are:
1- Facebook Messenger: the lag is in the pop up animation when the app notifies you on the screen and sometimes it doesn't lag.
2- Google Play: its always lagging but this is due to the caching process while you load the list of items it takes a while to show up the related icons and stuff so this is the cause of lagging.
3- While you are working with downloads and installations its always lagging in any situation. Transitions, using other apps and so on.
4- When you browse the internet sometimes it lags.
I think the lag is not due to the hardware quality and those stuff that people are considering. I think its a matter of 1 or a combination of the following:
1- The CPU.
2- RAM Management
3- GPU.
and this is because if you restarted the device you will be able to use it lag free for a while.
My best practice with the battery is that I use it always down to 2%, shutdown the phone totally and leave it in the charger, never overcharge it I don't trust the way Samsung handles that and then use it all day long with everything working like a charm.
Some solutions are about the developer options and turning on animations but I think its just to hide the lag not to remove it so I don't do it. I always clean up the cache, Removing all unwanted applications, games and useless background services and using the task manager to end unwanted running applications from time to time. If you do so I guarantee you the best user experience with you Note 3
I will be reporting all issues for you and hope that the next 4.4.2 update handles all this sh*t

Hi guys,
I've had my HTC One for over a year now and love it except recently it seems to have gone really slow / sluggish and visibly takes ages to do anything recently. For instance today in work I wanted to show someone a photo I took on my camera this morning... I went into the camera app and then clicked the thumbnail at the bottom to get to gallery and it must have taken 30 seconds to open the picture.... as much as I have iPhones, with them I have seen people click and it is pretty much instant....
I have updated it to the latest software (4.4.2) as soon as it was available a few months back and it is completely stock / unrooted etc.
Is there any way to either a) find out what is making it slow or b) get something to make it faster?
To note, I would rather not root / install a custom rom if I don't have to but if thats the only way then please do say so.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Did you install any new Apps that might be hogging resources?
There are process loggers and probably take a look at battery drain to identify apps.
I'd suggest to backup essential information (just in case) and perform a factory reset.
Thanks for the responses guys:
@gotcha69 - I install apps all of the time so it may well be this but I have no idea how to track down which one is at fault, shy of a very long process of installing everything one by one...
@davebugyi - can you recommend a process logger please? Looking at battery app usage this morning, 41% Google Play Services, 40% Android System, 5% MX Player and TV Catchup 2%... does any of that seem unusual?
Was watching a video on the way to work this morning and when I got there, pressed pause and it took a couple of seconds to actually stop the playback. I just cant get my head around a phone more powerful than most desktop/laptop computers from 3 years ago can be so sluggish for simple actions.
Definitely thinking about a factory reset - is there any way to backup apps on a non-rooted phone?
@gk141054 - I use only the built-in app in Android Tuner, but you can try OS Monitor or Elixir 2 or CPU Monitor.
For me GP services a bit too much in my opinion.
To back-up things you can use the accounts sync option on a non rooted device - copy all your stuff into a computer from SD Card, but nothing much can be done with apps. Maybe you can try HTC's backup app (can't help much, since I am rooted and using Titanium backup).
Check your media server

I've been having a bunch of trouble recently on my HTC One... some app update (I suspect Twitter for various reasons) has been causing my HTC's media scanner to go crazy, frequently hogging 25% CPU and causing 15% logcat (as measured by CPU Monitor).
I finally solved the problem seemingly by force closing the media server, clearing its data, force stop twitter, clear its cache, and delete it's cache folder (Android/data/...twitter/cache). For good measure, I also cleared .thumbnails (DCIM/.thumbnails, use ES file manager and enable hidden files).
Your mileage may vary...

I had definitely the same issues with my HTC One M7. I identified Mediaserver as the source of the problem. Mediaserver regularly scans all files on the device.
What I did to get rid of the problem is installing SD Maid (Pro) (no rooted device needed!). Scanning and deleting all the trash files that accumulated in the last 2 years freed about 2 GB of space!
Since then no lag on my HTC One was encountered!

I have been seeing issues with my phone lately (crashes).. The app just freezes then crashes without any messages.. Should i rollback to oreo?
To explain the crashes: when the app freezes, a few seconds it closes and returns to home screen... After that the icons starts loading (which should have been preloaded from the start)..
Weird because i have alot of RAM available (2GB) and i have enough memory (7GB).. Also when using 9GAG, when i load comments sometimes the app crashes, compared to my j7 prime; the app works fine (a lower spec phone). I tried battery optimizations, wiping cache partitions, everything the internet, XDA provided, but the problem still persists.
This is really annoying, as it ruins my game, losing data, etc.

Try clean your memory and also try use performance mode on battery settings. Hope it will help you
