So i have been searching around for awhile and have found some pretty cool things concerning the Lapdock on the Atrix. It looks like some people have been able to run linux on the lapdock which gives full access. I did some searching but cannot seem to find if the Bionic and Atrix would be the same in the lapdock area. I know that the HDMI and Charging ports are switched but other than that is everything else the same? Can i download the APK's to run linux on the Atrix for my Bionic?
With the new lapdocks coming out for the Razr I was wondering if the 100 and 500 model would be compatible with the Droid Bionic.
Also, with ice cream sandwich just released I was wondering if a rom were to come out with ice cream sandcwich, would webtop still work?
Yes, the lapdock supposedly supports all of the devices that use webtop. which is awesome.
I'm assuming yes with ICS. If Moto doesn't change the /Osh partition, i'm sure it will work. Reason I say that is due to flashing over a custom rom and still keeping my modified webtop.
Hopefully Moto will leave it alone or add new functionality that we can break into.
here's what I was looking at earlier:
http://thisismynext.com/2011/10/18/motorola-lapdock-500-pro-lapdock-100-accessories-hands-on/
Thanks now I may just have to get myself a lapdock.
Just to make sure if I were to flash a rom such as cm7 the lapdock would still work?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I would have to say not without a little bit of work from the devs. Besides, we don't even have a daily driver for CM7 yet anyways.
from what i have seen, the 500 lapdock will support all webtop enabled devices but the 100 will be a RZR only model. as for webtop, will it even be needed if the phone already has a tablet OS on it. With the limitations that the ram presents I think i would rather have the tablet OS when on the lapdock over webtop

Actually i think thats backwards. 100 is already advertised to fit all of them on the motorola site. I assume the 500 is the expensive one that sanjay spoke of.
Sorry, but what are the differences between the tablet OS and Web top OS

Everything. The tablet OS is still android. Webtop OS Ubuntu and has more of a full desktop feel like a net book. the phones available ram holds it back a bit also

Well the phone was made to run Android, but Motorola has a sort of thing that allows them to run Webtop (which is Ubuntu) over it. I don't know too much about it...but I do know that it has a FULL Firefox browser that runs like it would on an awful netbook lol. I've seen that it may have awesome functionality, but it's very slow because of the amount of RAM needed to run Firefox now is less than the Bionic is capable of. It's a great idea, but motorola needs to develop it more and make it better (and more affordable).
And why hasn't someone hacked webtop so we can run Linux or something lol?
Well once you move the webtop to your SD, you can hack it to run gnome or other desk tops but ram is still an issue. I found another thread that techs how to make a swap partition that would help with ram but I am struggling with it. I am not a hacker by any means

Correct. 500 has not been confirmed to be compatible with hardware older than RAZR.

I want a 500 to use on my Bionic. If the 100 and 500 both work the same and fit the razer and the 100 is said to work with bionic, then why wouldn't 500 also work with Bionic ?
I would love to be able to use ICH on my lapdock rather then ubuntu due to the lack of ram, seems after 10-15 min of browsing my phone runs out of ram and closes firefox.
Just picked up the 100. I prefer the smaller size, a 10" screen is big enough and only weights 2.2lbs. Still get 2 USB ports. Posting from it now, love it so far! Only $149.99 at best buy. Obviously looking at the box, I have a razr.

I can confirm the 500 does work with the Bionic. Bought one in the $150 VZW sale last weekend and it arrived yesterday. Screen, speakers, SD card slot, USB ports all work great. Webcam, VGA-out and Ethernet port do not work with the Bionic, but may be supported in a future Webtop update.
The Bionic fits in the tray, which is made to support different sized phones. However, there is a weird bug where Netflix and some other video apps display upside-down when using the tray. This is not just a Bionic bug as it affects the RAZR as well. The workaround is to remove the phone from the tray and just lay it flat while still plugged in, which fixes the display. Moto has confirmed this is a bug and said it will be fixed in a future patch.
As of right now you can get one of these for $50

Quick question guys thinking of geting a bionic from a friend but I have a few questions first
1. I see there is and awesome noob root and custom rom guide however how easy is it to go back completely to stock for warranty reasons with my charge I could just use a cwm install to get back to stock is it that easy for the bionic or is more required?
2. Does the bionic have a working ics port yet?
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
1. Is not as simple as the charge, but yes. there are guides on how to go back to stock from a custom ROM. Follow them to a T and you shoud be good.
2. Theres a few ics roms, axiom, gummy, etc. just look in the development section or on rootzwiki. You're going to have to install a safestrap or cwm bootstrap in order to use them though.
Don't
Sorry to be blunt, but don't get a Bionic. Sadly, this phone has become a leper in Motorola's lineup. It seems like they shifted so much attention to the Razr/Maxx so fast that this one has been left behind. I wouldn't expect the official ICS build on the Bionic until way later than the Razr, if at all.
Aside from the apparent lack of love from Motorola, there's some goofiness on the Bionic with images not containing radio versions and such that cause some extra hoops to jump through if you got off the beaten upgrade path when messing around with it.
The screen on the Bionic isn't that good either in my opinion. Unless you're getting one for dirt cheap, don't.
Obviously, others may have a different opinion.
really how many people are going to post this every week just freaking search dude!! or try it out for a week or so and if you don't like it return it!!!
Dont get a bionic unless you find one for free...I'd def get Galaxy Nexus or RAZR.
I agree with Averix, do not get a Bionic even for free!
If you can find one around $200 I would. I had one, it's an excellent phone. never lagged, speedy, etc. personally I'd rather have a Bionic than a Nexus, with HDMI, a microS card slot, & much much better build quality. The phone's have identified specs (dual core lmao, 1GB ram, FCC, etc) besides the above. ICS will come, it's not even needed to make this phone great, as there aren't any problems with GB, and there are still several excellent ROMs a soluble if flashing is your thing. People just need to be more patient.

I liked my Bionic now that I've rooted it. I'm not a fan of the stock OS. Currently I'm on Eclipse 2.2 because I had problems with Gummy.
-First post
Bionic with ICS here - I like it, but I think it's time to switch it up. If you're used to constant flashing...don't look for it here =/
Personally I have 2 bionics and find them to be very stable, good (not great) screen rez and can be purchased on eBay for a decent price (I got both of mine for around $180). RAZR's and GNEX are going to run a lot more, though I admit they are both superior devices. For me I simply wanted a dual core w/ very good LTE performance (Hotspot at home) and I get around 15-20Mbps-down, 12-16Mbps-up at home and on the road. ICS would be a plus but I would rather wait 4-5 months when VZW ships an update. I decided NOT to use my upgrade yet, I would rather wait for the next gen of phones w/ Tegra 3 or Exynos Quad processors and hang with the Bionic for the time being.
But if you want to be on a devices with regular ROM updates, yeah the ship has sailed on the Bionic.
DO NOT GET THE BIONIC. though i am still using it and toughing it out for the moment. Moto really screwed all Bionic users in 2 ways:
1. the phone in stock OS is terrible. it is slow, laggy, atrocious battery life (even with extended battery) and has many bugs that updates have not fixed.
2. Moto delayed its release for so long that they rolled out the RAZR (which has much better hardware and runs much smoother) a month after the bionic effectively stabbing all Bionic users in the back by killing further development of the bionic. A lot of developers have jumped ship from the Bionic to new phones. It looks like the RAZR will be getting ICS before the Bionic showing that Moto doesn't have much loyalty to the Bionic.
If you're gonna get a new phone, get a RAZR MAXX
Agree eclipse 2.2 on bionic is awesome excellent battery life ;-)

If you can get a bionic for a price you like. Great phone. Not the most development for it, but its still better than most androids in users hands right now. If you like flashing a lot, go with HTC or the nexus. I've been.seeing people sell their nexus for cheap on Craigslist lately. I wouldn't get a nexus though. No HDMI and screwey 3 on screen button is a deal breaker for me. Android been using 4 buttons for so long, I see no reason to change that's up.
The majority of the complaints about the bionic can be found with any android. At this point, a lot of it is nitpicking.

Came from the Droid X and found a gently used bionic with an extended battery and door and the stock battery and door with the lapdock for 200 bucks. In less than an hour had it rooted and gave Gummy ICS, liberty 3.2 (radio didt work. I'm on 902.) and settled on eclipse 2.2. It's a major improvement over the X. And I still have something to look forward to when ICS matures or even Jelly Bean is released.
I'm happy

Bionic has some pros over Razr
I actually decided on the Bionic over the Razr/Razr Maxx for a few reasons:
1. Bionic fits very securely into the Bionic Lapdock. I can sit in bed, on train, plane, etc., with the Bionic in the Bionic Lapdock and it stays in securely. I much prefer this over the Razr and the Lapdock 100/500 which is a universal Lapdock that very loosely hold the Razr. I found unless you are sitting at a table with these Lapdocks and Razr, than it is going to be cumbersome to use with the Lapdock. Also, easier to just drop Bionic straight into Bionic Lapdock than having to fiddle with cable of Lapdock 100/500.
2. Bionic Lapdock's build is much better. Bionic Lapdock is aluminum and feels more sturdy than plastic of Lapdock 100/500 used with the Razr.
- theses reason were more specific to use with Lapdock obviuosly, which for me was a deciding factor. however, Bionic has another pro I feel is overlooked, and that is its removable battery...
3. Bionic has removable batteries. Though everyone goes on about battery life of Razr Maxx, it is still not removable. Granted, it last a long time, but when it runs out, then what? Unless u got charger with you, you are out of luck. With Bionic I can easily carry a couple of extra batteries with my Lapdock to keep me going as long as i need. And I do not have to be tied down to a charger cable and outlet if Razr Maxx runs out of juice. I am often on Bionic with Lapdock in coffee shops, web browsing on LTE, streaming Pandora, editing files, the whole works. Even the Razr Maxx cannot keep up with me. And I never get a seat by a power outlet. With Bionic, I carry a extra battery and extra battery wall charger and usually have this extra battery charging on wall while i work across the room. When one battery runs out, i simply walk over, switch out batteries, and while I'm using up the new one, I still got one charging and I do not need to be tied to a cable. Works great. Razr Maxx cant do that and LTE is a killer.
Raxr Maxx = 3300mah
Bionic Batt = 1760mah....get 2 of them and swap one out while another is charging with a extra battery wall charger and you got = unlimited battery life = unlimited mah!!...for cheap!!
The extra bulk, updates of Bionic, dont compare to this nearly inexhaustible battery life with removable batteries that everyone seems to overlook with Razr Maxx. Plus I got my Bionic, extra batteries, extra battery wall chargers and other accesories for less than what Razr Maxx costs. Bionic all the way for me! Now just give me ICS with Webtop 3.0 tablet mode and I do not see a phone in sight for the price that has this many features.
Well if anyone wants a Bionic with a silicone case, extended battery, and charger let me know

Nice phone.
Better than the Pantech Breakout I returned for it.
I snagged a Bionic lapdock recently during the $80 sale, and mine is in perfect working order. Unfortunately Webtop doesn't have the performance I'm looking for and I would rather just have HDMI mirroring, which it doesn't look like it officially supports.
I can't seem to dig up any info on this, anyone know?
you can always just switch the Mobile view tab to Landscape and full screen it. IT runs smoother but not as sharp as lapdock view. ICS is supposed to bring us a new webtop with smoother performance but who knows when that will be
I would be a huge fan of this... find any solutions? I'd like to mirror and VNC into a full chrooted ubuntu version rather than my limiting hacked up webuntu...

One of the reasons I purchased my first Motorola (RAZR) was because of lapdock and WebTop. I'm hoping that someone can bring this back either in an app or as part of a Custom ROM.
Is this possible?
I would pay for a working webtop app. I would actually keep this phone instead of the Droid Ultra.

Not sure what good it'll do but id pay for anything that made my lapdock usable.
Have you guys tried airdroid? I am sure there are others but I only use web top for testing on occasion.

Missing WebTop
I like the lapdock and I like the browser in WebTop because it is not the phone browser so WEB sites stay in PC mode. I have looked at Airdroid but I don't want to have a laptop with me.
I posted in this forum in hops that this feature can be added in a custom ROM or in to an app.
I wouldn't count on seeing it as I think Moto has stopped using Webtop and will not be using it on any future devices. So unless someone makes a standalone app to do what Webtop did you may be hard pressed to see it in the future.
MIssing WEB Top
I heard that about Motorola dropping WEB top that is why I posted here in hopes that there is enough interest it resurrect it as an app or in a custom ROM

Webtop bounty here here! I got $30 contribution for a port to razr maxx hd xt926m.
This was mentioned in another thread. We tried changing resolutions for certain lapdocks.
These phones do work just fine with the lapdock 100 and 500. But it just makes your phone display look like a tablet. Then use opera or Firefox.

Nice. Yeah I tried the atrix lapdock and did the mod where you flip the micro USB and hdmi. It works just fine (speakers, keyboard, track pad, everything) but the screen has black bars above and below that are like letterboxes. Even with the script manager you linked to still a no go.
The aforementioned screen issues do not happen with the lapdock 100 or 500. It goes full screen just fine. It basically just enlarges the display and makes it look like a tablet layout. I've seen lapdock 500s sell as low as $70 on ebay and the 100s go for as low as $40 shipped.
Why do we need webtop then you ask? If we got it ported, we would have more options for hdmi output, and it would have a dedicated layout for when it's docked. Also the black bars would no longer be an issue for those who have atrix or bionic lapdocks. Plus there's Firefox with flash, etc.
I have a brand new atrix lapdock that I modified. I also have the Motorola brand leather portfolio case. I have been very hesitant to get rid of it in hopes we get this bounty going. But with school starting again I'm afraid I might be less hesitant to buy a ld 100 or 500 if it's a great deal and list my atrix ld on ebay. Either way the whole situation is frustrating. I may just sell my phone and get the droid maxx or galaxy note 3 after they've been out for at least a month and I've been able to play with them thoroughly.
How much do you pledge Ronbo85? Hopefully we can get more folks interested. Spread the word!

The bionic one is nice because it's ports are oriented correctly. No physical mod needed. But it also has the black bar issue. So beware.
There is not a developer on board currently, if you could help with that, I'd appreciate it. I figure the more people that pledge the greater chance someone will commit to helping.

OK well let me try and get a lapdock. I am definately interested. I do need a little education here. So the lapdock is usable but has issues? The Atrix/Bionic ones have black bars due to screen resolution fit?
I was checking the 2 razr maxx's (non-HD) I have, one has JB the other has ICS and they both report webtop 3.0.0 in the settings menu. One of them has the stock rom and 2 custom roms all JB. One custom rom has webtop the other does not. I gather webtop is incorporated in the rom. Maybe the avenue is to appeal to a ROM DEV.
I appreciate your help.
