Hey guys!!
I am thinking about rooting my note ....I am bit worried. I have LB2 right now and I am going to downgrade to KL3. Will it affect performance of my note in any way. I have heard that on previous versions of firmwares game performance was not so good. I have latest version so gaming is just amazing. Will it be affected after rooting to lower version? Please note that I am not going to use custom roms. I just need rooted phone. Furthermore, if OTA update is available can I update it over the air even if I am rooted?
Regards,
Abhi.

Yeah there will be some performance issue in the earlier versions hence the newer version of stock roms have been out by samsung. The best you can do is root and then use Mobile Odin Pro and flash the newer stock rom by selecting the option of ever root so that the newer stock rom you are flashing gets rooted in the process of flashing through mobile odin pro!
Cheers!

Thanks.
Got perfect answer. What about OTA udpates? Furthermore, will I face issues with Video camera and other functions on custom roms?

You might be able to get them. But the best bet will be to take the roms from here on xda as you will get to know whether the new one can be rooted or not. So you can then choose to update if you want root and the new rom cant be rootable so you can wait for the root to come and then flash it.
I am currently on custom rom rocket v 23 as seen in my signature. And i haven't faced any of such issues !
I will advise you to go custom as you get to have many options and features. Rest depends on you
Thx buddy. Will do rooting thingy tomorrow and let you know the results.

Thanks Abhi. @mR.fR34ky : I am thinking about doing the same thing. Using stock rom kernel which is already rooted. I don't want to hurt my note by using custom rom. I was reading custom rom thread and ppl are facing lots of problems with that. You have to use patches to fix that. I don't want to go through all this trouble.
Can you please provide me step by step information to root only stock kernel? Will I get OTA updates after this root? I am waiting for ICS. It's going to b awsm. Please check below link:

Hi,
I installed a custom kernel under the latest stock rom. Here is the guide:
http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010/11/samsung-galaxy-s-how-to-install.html
this speedmod kernel looks promising. After installed the kernel you just have to install the super user from play store and titanium backup if you like..
Hit thanks if I helped
Cheers
I'm about to try chainfire's kernal and root my Note for the first time.
It seems pretty strait forward and looks like something that you might be interested in.

I need official CyanogenMOD for my Galaxy Ace S5830. The latest that is the MOST STABLE for Ace, meaning if CyanogenMOD 10 is latest but has bugs, and CyanogenMOD 9 is stable, then I want 9.
And I do mean absolutely no bugs whatsoever. ALL apps must be working, such as fm radio, camera, wifi, bluetooth, etc
If you can, please answer these questions as well:
1. To install a custom ROM like CyanogenMOD, is flashing ClockworkMod Recovery a prerequisite?
2. Can I flash ClockworkMod Recovery by first installing "ROM Manager" from play.google.com ? In other words, does ROM Manager have the ClockworkMod Recovery?
3. Do phones need to be rooted to flash a custom recovery (like ClockworkMod Recovery) ?
4. If phone is running CyanogenMOD, can it still use Samsung Kies to restore contacts?
5. What is a nightly?
Thank you so much!!!

Cyanogenmod 7.2 nightly or rc3 are stable. Also cyanogenmod by frozenaceteam is very stable. Cyanogenmod 9 and 10 still have a lot of bugs.
1. Yes you need clockworkmod recovery to install custom roms.
2. Do not install or touch rom manager as it will hard brick your device. Rom manager does not support ace.
3. Yes rooting is essential.
4. Once cyanogenmod is installed, kies will no longer detect phone. Try googling android contact backup.

What is a nightly? Is rc3 another custom ROM?
Also, in the ROM Manager page at play.google.com , it says:
"Samsung users: You must flash a Clockwork compatible kernel first (see XDA forums)"
Should I be concerned with this? Not that I wish to use ROM Manager; I'm just curious....
Thanks a lot!

Actually i wouldnt recommend the nightly version, as it still has some bugs and is for advanced users who uprade this every night. Rc3 stands for Real Canidate 3 and is close to becoming final. It has no bugs so i recommend it. These are all variants of cyanogenmod. I also found another rom called cyanogenmod 7.2 official. This is the final release and has no bugs. You can try rc3 or official and see which one is better in battery and performance.
Do not worry about it. You can root it. Then install clockworkmod recovery and flash the rom. There are many tutorials on xda. I recommend watching video tutorials too

RC3 is release candidate. It IS the official build. These are stable builds.Nightly builds on the other hand are builds that are made by Jenkins(build bot) everyday.
I recommend using vo-1's CM build though..
Oh,and you can't use Kies with CM7,and...
NEVER USE ROM MANAGER,it will hard brick your device.

No offense...But most of what you said is wrong...
RC stands for release candidate
Cyanogen Mod 7.2 is a rom.
RC and nightlies aren't variants. These are names for the builds, there are nightlies,Release Candidates and stable builds..
RC3 IS the office build.Ace doesn't have the stable version yet.
CM is pre-rooted and comes with CWM recovery.
Root is also not required for flashing from recovery.

If so, how is the speed? and battery performance?
Also, are you referring to the cm10 for ace that is NOT an official cyanogenmod? Because I know cyanogenmod team will not develop cm10 for ace because they know ice cream sandwich would degrade functionality of ace.

Hi prawesome. I still don't get the difference between nightlies and Release Candidates. Are they not "stable" versions?
Also, you say root isn't required to flash a custom recovery?
And you also say "CM is pre-rooted and comes with CWM recovery". But I thought you need to get cwm recovery first before you can flash CM? Why does CM come with CWM recovery when CWM recovery is already a prerequisite?
Anyway, can you just recommend the LATEST STABLE version of cyanogenMOD for Galaxy Ace S5830? and if it's not too much trouble, can you post the link?
Thanks a lot!

I know you asked Prawesome, but I can help you with some of your answers:
The following passage is taken from http://www.cyanogenmod.com/about
"Right now, CyanogenMod consists of two parallel and active major versions: CyanogenMod 7 is based on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), and CyanogenMod 9 is based on Android 4.0 (ICS); CM9-capable devices are being phased out of CM7, but since there’s a large amount of devices still on the market that aren’t capable of fully running Android 4.0, CyanogenMod 7 exists to support them. The variants of the firmware are split into 3 categories, Stable, Release Candidate and Nightlies. The Stable version, as suggested by the title, is the tried and tested variant of the firmware proven to be mostly bug free and suitable for daily use. The latest stable version is available for an assortment of the officially supported devices. A Release Candidate (RC) build may not be the final version, but a variant that has no fatal flaws or bugs, on the stabilization stages to become the final product that is the Stable variant. Lastly we have the Nightlies, which are as volatile as a firmware can get. These releases keep coming at an interval of a day or two and if you do end up trying one of these, do not be alarmed if the your device goes cuckoo on you. These ROMs are largely untested, and as advised by CyanogenMod, not meant for use for an average user. These releases, are meant to test untested waters that may or may not break your phone."
As for the latest official CyanogenMod Rom for our device, go to get.cm (by typing "get.cm" without quotation marks into your browser and look for cooper (not ace))
Cheers
Rich

Official stable download link: http://get.cm/get/2K8
I would say though, that a lot of people find that roms based on Vo-1's version much better, like Droidace, Apocalypse (second last release), and the work Cryss is doing to keep Vo-1's CM7 going for example. I do urge you to give these a try too.
At the end of the day there is no best rom and you must try quite a few to find the one that suits you best.
Happy flashing!

If you take the time to read this thread you will see that
1) nightly versions are unstable by nature and are not recommended for regular users
2) unofficial versions based on vo-1's cm7 are recommended
Try another ROM
@venkatcse539 Try Aplocalypse (its a barebone rom) or cyanmobile (it awesome) or democracy (its latest updated and stable)

Can i install xposed on there ?? i think xposed is not supported on lollipop right now....
Stuck with pulsating crDroid 'eye'
Don't get past the boot image.
How can I detect what is wrong ?
Tried several things.
Factory reset, wiped dalvik cache, wipe cache.
The zip file is not corrupt, it flashed without an error, several times, as well as gapps, tried with both recent KK and LP ones.
So far, I have been able to flash CyanogenMod files since version 9 with both CWM and TWRP recovery installed.
I don't see anything suspicious in recovery.log.
Where else shall I look for vital information ?

This one is good. Haven't faced any single issue from yesterday. However, don't know if it's fully stable or not, that's why gonna hold onto this for a while. Let's see what happens. And a big thanks to Crdroid for this awesome rom! keep up the good work guys.

You should have installed this using custom Recovery.
Just flash this

it should give you KK back that too with root.
see this is why I suggest people not to rush for lollipop, it's full of bugs at this moment. that's why it's not coming to Android One devices.

Dude... I've seen you on many posts telling people not to root or unlock bootloader... or not to flash stuff etc etc... Why would you come to xda if you dont want any of that? use your phone normally and wait for OTAs if you are so scared... yes flashing things like a moron will lead to soft bricks and bootloops. but those are basics of debugging any device... if one doesnt know how to recover from a soft brick then he/she shouldn't flash things to their device. Yes nowadays playing (and messing) with our devices is really easy, so noobs tend to make mistakes... I have too in the past. But if you stay scared then you dont belong on XDA

(this is because TWRP is more stable, and supports all ROMs from 4.4.4 to 5.1, unlike philz touch or CWM) otherwise you can manually download the .img file and flash it via cmd prompt on PC. (If you dont know how to do that just let me know... I'll guide you through the process)
then download the flashable zip of your choice (I suggest official CyanogenMod11 ... I use it as my daily driver and confirm that it is stable with everything working)
Here is the link
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=sprout
additionally you need to download GAPPS from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397942
Copy the two downloaded files to your external sd card (remember the path)
then boot into recovery and flash (install) them... then reboot to system and voila!! you are back on 4.4.4 !!
PS. I advise against going back to stock 4.4.4 because there are some added precautions you must take, otherwise you risk losing your imei , and wont be able to make calls/sms/mobile internet. Switching to CM is much safer and easier... plus gauranteed official (and faster than google) updates thanks to our beloved dev Varun Chitre

But if you stay scared then you dont belong on XDA

funny, I didn't tell anyone to not to do it, I told if someone worries about the warranty then don't do it, some people ain't even aware of that.

Well yes.... Even when DEVs put huge warnings and disclaimers on their stuff, people just tend to ignore them. My post's intention was not to take a dig at you. I saw a couple of your posts on other threads, which I felt were a tad bit negative regarding modding our devices

Download the factory image of 4.4.4 and place it in ADB folder ( if u have not setup adb, search in Google ), now take a backup of your current os via recovery ( just in case ), next wipe cache partition, factory reset. Now connect to PC, flash the factory image through ADB. [emoji2]

Easiest way to downgrade is to flash cwm backup of kitkat stock rom via custom recovery. If you had made clockworkmod backup of your rom before upgrading then just restore it from recovery after wiping data, system, boot and cache partition, there is no need for pc and Sp flash tool. If you have no backup then try to look for it on xda,and flash, it works without any issue.

No. CyanogenMod is a different organisation altogether. They have those Jenkins(server) which builds for officially supported devices daily and uploads them (which will be downloaded later by the users as OTA)

Well... Google doesn't make cyanogenmod ... And official support for CM11 is dropped.... Use CM12, or the last CM11 NIGHTLY... Or choose an AOSP based Rom
Can someone help me? I have a nexus 5 running marshmallow and want to get back to kick at 4.4.4......any advice.....I already have twrp recovery installed...and it is a rooted device.

You should have installed this using custom Recovery.
Just flash this

it should give you KK back that too with root.

is this working for galaxy e5 sm-e500h????
Nope, this is only for Android One devices.
So.... 2 months ago I tried to flash CM 12.1 on my phone (S III mini). I looked in the tutorial and do the same things, but when i flashed CM 12.1 ( not Gapps ), it gives me an error. I was really scared and then I tried to reboot my device, but it said "No OS installed." So then I realised I deleted my OS. But I went to samsung service and they fixed my phone ( maybe they flashed original android). Please help me!!! I want to try to install second time CM on my phone, but i'm really scared. I dont know what it can cause that error and how to prevent that error in the future. ( i had root on my device)

I hope you can help me.
I flashed TWRP Recovery and successfully rooted S3 mini.
Now I have cm 12.1 .zip and Gapps for Marshmallow on my PC.
Am so confused about Gapps.
What if I flashed Gapps for marshmallow along with cm 12.1 ?

The best is to install the cm12.1 gapps because maybe you will have an error if you install the M gapps..
If you want try it you can be lucky but don't play with fire every time

Well, i think that this should be more appropriate on my thread which i explain also how to install gapps, but anyway.
At any given time, you can flash ONLY the same gapps with your rom's android version. I think this has something to do with ART.

It means that I have to choose appropriate Gapps based on the Android version of custom ROM.
If it's cm12.1 , I have to flash Gapps L 5.1.x.
Okay, anyway I have to update the App after installation. Then why not to flash the updated Gapps for any custom version?
I'm New to this world of custom, so only much confusions and questions.
Thanks
