So basically the story is and I know this has happened to quite a lot of people but one day the mic on my HTC One decided it would just suddenly have a very low input and now people can't hear me in calls unless I use my headphones with a built in mic or put the phone on speaker which they can hear me crystal clear and it's a loud volume but when in a phone call like normal without headphones or using speaker I've been told it sounds like as best as I can re describe what i was told in a text form it sounds like to the other person, "uuggh" "ugggh" "uggh" every time I am talking using it so I am hoping this is simply just an issue with firmware or something.
I am currently running paranoid android 4.6 beta 3 but I think from memory the issue occurred either after flashing a version of venom rom or after I flashed the unofficial multirom which I think is completely removed now.
All help and suggestions are highly appreciated but a suggestion of trying to access Diag mode or anything to do with that is un needed due to paranoid not including the htc self test mode in the rom.
I had the same problem..you have to change the microphone...it s not a software issue..it`s hardware

Damn that's annoying. I can't be bothered sending it back to HTC because people are reporting just getting phones back with the same issue or the purple camera issue so i'll just stick to using my headphones. Thanks for the reply though

not sure if my problem was the same but after flashing a bunch of different roms ...last one being insertcoin, I was getting complaints that people on the other end could not hear me. I would switch to speaker and everything was fine. switch back and they described me as sounding muffled ?
Long story short, I'm s-off so i just flashed back to Android 4.3
AT&T RUU and the microphone has worked fine since.

Now that's the kind of reply that I like to see. I'm currently at uni so I'll try flashing back to stock with an ruu when I get back home and see what happens and then update here but if that fixes it I will be extremely happy until I flash pack to 4.4 because I need me's some kitkat and it all starts again haha but to me if that works and solves it then the hboot update they did must have been the cause of the issue.
There must be something I can simply just flash to the phone while in s-off rather than having to flash a whole ruu because it has to be simply a low level firmware or driver issue where the noise cancellation is just not working properly
RUU Link
Hi. Do you happen to have a link to the RUU you used? Ive tried a few that I found on HTC1GURU and had a bunch of issues.
Thanks for any help!

The RUU you're supposed to use is specific to your device so if you use an RUU that isn't for your device then you need to change the CID and make sure you're s-off. The HTC1GURU download links have the CID's listed under the download as to what you need yo set your phone to
I've had this issue, and had mixed, albeit brief, successes with various methods. Tried everything, tape, gently clearing out the mic hole. It would work perfectly for a short period of time, even without me doing anything, but ultimately the mic would go back to being extremely static-y or not working. Ultimately had to send it in past the warranty and they claimed a logic board replacement was necessary ($200) and after some back and forth with me pointing out that this was my 3rd time sending in the phone due to hardware issues (bad autofocus, purple tint, etc.) they acquiesced and replaced it for free. It's a hardware issue and will get worse over time -- my advice is if making calls on your phone is important to you, bite the bullet and get it fixed.

Hi folks
I'm wondering if my Kaiser is defective somehow. On occasions, during phonecalls, people are complaining about not being able to hear me loud enough, then after a few seconds they can hear me loud and clear again, without me doing anything.
This happens to almost every phonecall I make, which makes my skin crawl each time, as I'm afraid I could be using an expensive, yet defective Kaiser
Has anyone else experienced this, and if so found a solution?
Thanks for your interest!
Possible App conflict
I encounter the same problem and found out that a 3rd party application (resco audio recorder) is the culprit. Aparrently I enabled an option to record all voice calls and in effect, causes the 3rd party not to hear me. maybe you have the same issues
Try uninstalling any applications that might use the built in microphone and try.
Otherwise, you could have a defective Kaiser.
Try a different radio.
i have the same problem too. What is the best radio to use???
Doesn't upgrading the radio require a ROM update?
Upgrading the radio does indeed require a ROM update, but this is not the same part of the ROM as you would flash for example the AT&T or Dutty's latest to. You can change the radio ROM independantly of the 'application' ROM.
For my personally, the .17 radio ROM seems to work best, but others feel .31 feels best for them. You will have to consult the radio ROM thread (Kaiser -> Upgrading) for further information as to how to change them, and which ROM is compatible with your system.
EDIT: Note that this may or may not help with your issue, I simply do not know and you will have to try it yourself. It's just a suggestion that may fix this issue for you.
well why the hell cannot HTC do this at factory??? they really are dumb arses.
i dont expect to have to play with a phone changing files etc just to allow the person i am calling to hear me.
I wish NOKIA OR SAMSUNG had made it
If you've got a stock rom and radio - completely un flashed from new, then the problem is more likely to be hardware related. If you've changed the rom then there is a good chance that the problem is because the radio also needs to change.
Check here for which radios work with which roms.
I can't help with which will work for you but I've tried most radios and I've found 1.27.12.17 and 1.27.12.32 work well with stanfard HTC rom and also all of Dutty's and Schaps roms.
Yah, the same problem and found so far a brick wall as far as resolution. I am unsure if new radio will resolve the problem as one user has returned his "tilt" phone 3 times under warranty just for the speaker problem and each time the speakerphone did not work even when "replaced". Also, other users have tried different radio/rom as well as "replacing" there phone through warranty: each time result the same; speakerphone did not work.
Here are a couple links relating to the problem but each time the problem seemed to remain.
Here is first post under xda (5 pages i think;relates to speaker problem; you will see users tried different radios and such but no resolution to problem ever found):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=337931&page=5
here is another link from mobile planet that i started....
http://www.mobileplanet.com/ft.aspx?k=104689
resolution to this problem remains elusive. Some speculate that its due to non duplex design of the hardware while others speculate there might be some type of hack to correct this; but so far no fix has been found. Given the poor state of video drivers for this device; one has to wonder though if this is a software issue; but who knows.
Discussions regarding "callers not been able to hear me" seem to have died off.
I am still having this issue having tried many many different radios and roms. It's got to the point where I don't use the phone for calls anymore.
Today I flashed my phone back to the Taiwanese ROM and restored the OEM bootloader and went into the HTC service center. Of course the first thing they tried to do was test it on the spot by calling me in the shop. True to form it didn't show the issue which led them to believe it was more of a reception/network issue, even though I know it isn't. I have left it with them to send to their "technicians" and will await their outcome.
I asked another friend today if he's had the same issue where callers can't hear him and he does. Does anyone else still get "sorry I can't hear you" on nearly every call? I had always put this issue down to the crappy cellphone network in Taiwan but I had the same issue when I went back home last month where I've never had any phone call quality issues in the past (Vodafone NZ).
I'll post the outcome from HTC on Mon 6th Oct.
I'll probably get shot down in flames here but ...
The company I work for bought 200 Kaisers for our techs .... within a few days we people were complaining that the person on the other end of the phone couldn't hear them. It didn't take a genius to work out that with the STUPID mic location and the way you held your phone, the base of your thumb would completely cover the mic and make you inaudible!!
I do this daily without realising it!!!
Might be something to look at when/if I get my phone back. Out of interest... where is the mic???
The fact that the sound cuts in out out for my callers would suggest that it is a different issue though. It goes very very faint for them and then comes back to normal all without me moving or raising my voice.
Bottom right of the phone.... under the "reset" button.
Wow, I never knew that's where the mic was! Thanks!
That tiny hole next to the mini USB? It's almost on the back of the phone and definitely not close to the mouth when holding with your right hand.
I'll have to keep that in mind and see if it helps...
Yeah that's the one .... hold your phone in your right hand and let your hand relax a little and see where the mic ends up!! Completely covered by your hand!!

You're right!! I got my phone back from HTC and they couldn't fault the mic. When i got home I tested it with my usual hand grip and sure enough it blocks the mic completely and nothing can be heard by the person on the other end.
Fault = I have fat hands
Hopefully this thread will help anyone else with similar issues.
LOL ... I wonder how many they get daily due to this!!
I'm a leftie so my hands aren't blocking the mic. I also had this problem with the Qtek 8310
Hello,
I have the UK unlocked HTC One, currently running Android Revolution HD 12.2. I've been experiencing really poor call quality - as well as the person I am calling being very quiet, apparently from the other end I simply 'cut out' with some regularity. This happens whether or not there is a case on the phone (although neither of my cases blocks the hole on the back for noise cancelling.) Today, for example, I had to call one person three times before they could hear me, but I also cut out mid conversation at points.
This is getting seriously irritating. Is there any way that I can prove that this is happening - any mic tests etc that can be done? Or is my only chance to go back to stock, take it into the shop, and hope they can replicate the issue?
Cheers for any advice!

Is there any chance that this issue could be solved by flashing a different Radio? I'm on EE UK, using their LTE network, and I'm not sure which radio would be best for battery/connection! I'm currently running Android HD 20.1.
Thanks very much for any advice!

I get this aswell, I'm on Tesco which is O2 but often the other person says they didn't hear me, like it went silent for a second or so. I read somewhere about holding the phone and covering the mic as a possible cause but I know I don't hold anywhere near the bottom of the phone. Every single time I make a call aswell there's like a 2 second pause before anybody can hear me, this bugs me also.
I haven't seen a solution anywhere so I too would like an answer.

That sounds like the exact same problem, and it happens whether or not I'm using a case. I'm *definitely* not covering the cut-out on the back either.
I'm going to try flashing the Orange UK radio, will report back on whether or not it works!
Dont see flashing to a different radio working.
I had my fully updated stock HTC One develop a problem with the Mic about a month ago, so i sent it back. HTC couldn't fix it so sent me a new one....just three days later that developed exactly the same problem.

How did you test the problem? I'm having trouble flashing the radio and the problem is sufficiently intermittent that I'm going to have a hard time proving it when I take it back to the shop.
If the problem is intermittent then i doubt you have the problem, once i got it it never went away.
So, fist time post.
Anyway, a friend of mine gave me his Flex the other day. He was upset because he couldn't get the sound/audio to work and no one could hear him on his end, showing his mic wasn't working (first time this has happened). After tinkering around for a bit (cleaning over and over), trying everything I could, even downgrading it from 4.4.2 to 4.2.2 to see if it was a software problem. Still nothing. Yet, when a headset or just normal headphones are plugged in everything works fine.
So, after all of that we took it in and they said it wasn't a hardware problem, but they couldn't find a solution and they couldn't replace the handset with his warranty already expired. So, I was hoping there was someone here who could help me. I was thinking maybe if there was a software problem I didn't catch if installing a custom rom on it would help. I was hoping to hopefully get some insight before going to that.
Also, sorry if this is in the wrong section, still new here.
There are no "custom" per say ROMs besides the cm11 one Playfulgod and I have posted in the dev section. If you're on 4.2.2 download Playfulgod's cm11. But it doesn't stay booted and there is no data. Download mine ,which is only Playfulgod's cm that I've modified to boot with 4.4, and the is no sound but it has data and stable boot. I don't suggest either one as your fix though. If you flash the stock 4.2.2 or the stock 4.4.2 software to it and there still is no sound except through the headphone jack then I can't imagine it not being a hardware issue. I mean it pretty much has to be a hardware issue.
And besides the kats at these stores selling you the phones or answering your questions, stereotypically no smarter about the devices than any other 20 year old that has googled and memorized the specs of the phones. They know specs and sales pitches. Other wise they have to revert to the computer and go through a series of elimination questions to diagnose your issue. Ive even had to show one rep how to use lg PC suite to flash his g2 back to stock. And that's the standard issue software that we all have.
My best guess on your issue is the device could have been dropped or damaged in some way that has loosened or broken a connection or part inside rendering the speaker useless. But that's my opinion.
Well I don't think it's been dropped. At least he said he didn't drop it. After pulling it apart I made sure everything was in the right place and nothing was shorted out or disconnected. So I'll probably send it into a repair shop to see if they can do anything with it. Though a headset would probably just be the better way to go, it's just an inconvenience.

Absolutely. I would hate to have to through in my ear buds every time I had to answer a call
Well after installing Master Volume Control, I have been able to test that the speaker does in fact work. But no sounds of any kind aside from voice call, work, the normal beep you get when using the volume rockers. This is starting to drive me crazy.
might have solution
Just received my refurbished flex phone, realized no sound from speaker. Popped the back off a couple times, suddenly I hear sound! The cable over the battery when lifted and remove the crease caused by shape of battery removed, speaker now works! I hope this helps you. Best of luck.

Alright so basically I posted sometime last year that I was having issues where my mic won't work so when I make a phone call the other person can't hear me at all, unless I put the phone onto speaker phone then they can hear me fine. I've tried flashing new roms of different Android versions, custom and stock, I've also reflashed a couple of different hboot versions and also firmware just incase it may be linked to that but yet still no resolution. So recently I went ahead and bought a new mic, replaced the old one with this one and still, no one can hear me unless I'm on speaker phone. Can anyone at all suggest what the issue could be, I'm starting to suspect an issue with the main board because I've tried pretty much everything to fix it.
Thanks in advance

Hello,
Both the earpiece and the other speaker suddenly stopped working on my nexus 6. I am suspecting it is a hardware issue since I performed a hard reset but the issue still persists. The odd thing is that both the earpiece and the speaker are affected at the same time. Are they connected to each other?
Is there any way I can make sure that this is indeed a hardware issue before cracking open the phone?
Thanks

Before I opened the phone, I'd boot to safe mode and see if things work. If they do, reboot and see if the problem comes back. Booting into safe mode disables all unnecessary apps, clears caches and resets settings to default. Sometimes that resolves your problem and on reboot things are working again.

So I guess it sounds like hardware. You might take s close look and see if there is damage/dirt in the jack making the device think the headphones are connected. The pin is easily bent and wears so it's probably just that. ifixit has a repair guide.
Alternatively, you might consider Bluetooth headphones [emoji4]

Thanks. I don't think it's the jack issue because I installed an app that shows a headphone icon in the status bar when a headphone is plugged in and it doesn't show it when nothing is connected.
Do you know why both speakers ceased functioning at the same time AND if there is a way for me to direct audio to only one of them, either the earpiece or the speaker, to see if one or both
are dead?
wow. I reverted back to an earlier build from Feb and now it's working. Very interesting.

First, sorry to hear about your problem. But, I am actually happy to see this up at xda. Tell you why. I purchased a uesd nexus 6 from a seller on ebay. Description was everythings works. Pics showed it was in excellent condition.
Problem was when it arrived. I discovered the top speaker was trash. Total robot like voice. Of course seller denied any knowledge of it. My option was to return it to him. But judging from the way he spoke to me. I could tell it was going to be a fight. There is no way he did not know about this. I wound up eating the phone and am currently awaiting a new top speaker. So, please dont forget to ask about speakers if buying used. My concern was body and screen. I never thought to ask about speakers and I never thought there would be crooks like him. Wrong...

It is interesting. Is it possible you had a mismatch between kernel and security updates? "Newer" kernel on "older" ROM? Or vice versa. The difference doesn't have to be more than one has a security update that the other didn't.

More like mismatched or corrupted libs or drivers
Know this is an older thread, but just figured I'd post what I found regarding a similar issue I had. My phone basically took a 3 second dunk in the sink. Everything seemed fine the first hour or two, then the speakers stopped working. However, it seems like the speakers failing is some kind of water damage failsafe or something. The solution is just to turn your phone off and on around 5 times (I can't remember the exact number, but once or twice won't cut it), and you will have the speakers return to normal. Not sure if the OP had the same issue, but just an idea in case something similar happens to others.
Bumping an old thread but I had this same issue and had to flash back to previous builds. I stopped updating my phone around Jan/Feb. Tried to update to the Aug 7.1.1 build and the same thing happened again. I didn't try the turn on and off 5+ times, I'm just once again restoring my Jan/Feb build.
Can anyone else confirm this "fix" or has this same problem?
I'd boot to safe mode first. If it works then, it has something to do with an app, your app restore process or something like that.
