[q] twrp v.2.8 for galaxy s5 ng3 variant? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

Hey all. Just wondering if TWRP is compatible with the NG3 variant of the Galaxy S5. Or if any of you could point me in the direction of a custom recovery substitute that works with NG3. SafeStrap seemed legit, but doesn't support my kernel...as far as I know. I just want to be safe with a nandroid backup! Thanks!

The bootloader on the S5 is locked for AT&T and Verizon, so even if you could flash a custom recovery it would not work right and probably brick the phone if you tried to flash something. Safestrap is the only recovery option at this time and is based off of TWRP, so you can still make nandroid backups.
As for the kernel you're going to do the same thing you did to root your phone. Both towelroot and safestrap require the ND3 kernel, so you want to flash the ND3 kernel to your phone using odin. Install safestrap (make sure you read and follow the op carefully). Once that's finished you can flash the NG3 kernel back to your phone and you're all set. I would suggest making a full backup of your stock image before doing anything else...just to be safe. Now you're ready to head over to the development section and look for something you like.

[Q] Cant flash ROMS from stock 4.2

I have newly acquired a samsung s4 active with 4.2 stock. I couldn't OTA upgrade or manually (keeps failing halfway through), couldn't flash 4.4 ROM through recovery, and couldn't do backups through ROM manager and recovery 3.0+
At this point i'm not sure what i should do. i'd like to set my phone up and forget it.. but nothing is really going easy for me. is this because of the s4 active recovery? why is it so hard to change that darn 4.2 stock rom?

It depends on which version of the phone you have. If you have the i9295, then it really shouldn't be that hard to do what you are asking about. If you have the i537 then you can't really do anything you're asking about because it has a locked bootloader. If you have the i537 you need to check out SafeStrap.
i believe i do have the i537. is there a thread i can check out to help with getting started on custom recovery roms etc?

The i537 has a locked bootloader which means you cannot install a custom recovery or any other kernel. Your only option is to use SafeStrap along with 4.2.2 TouchWiz-based ROMs. Read more about SafeStrap here and a list ROMs that will work with SafeStrap here.
Because of the locked bootloader you will not be able to use CyanogenMod, any CM-based ROM, or any AOSP-based ROM. The only ROM I like using that is different than the stock ROM is the 4.2.2 GPe. Do some reading before you try SafeStrap, otherwise you could brick your phone pretty easily.

Soft-Brick Safestrap.

Hi, having a problem, I was getting ready to flash a custom rom on my new Att Galaxy S4 NG3, everything was ready to go I was in safestrap, advanced > formatted everything and then the battery fell out. Now all I get is the splash screen that says Samsung with the custom lock on it....

First, is it an S4 or S5? Double check that BEFORE trying these next steps. Find the ODIN file for your phone and you'll have to start over. ODIN, root with towelroot, install busybox, install safestrap and be on your way.
It is the S5, At&t Version, and I can't seem to find the stock ROM anywhere, I have the NG3 firmware edition.
For anyone else curios I was able to solve my problem. Although I could not find the newest exact version that was on my phone, I used the previous version from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785185
and was able to use odin to reflash the ROM and am now starting over with the process to safestrap and custom ROM's.

Att note 3 help

I rooted with towel root NC2 and safe strap and was using some roms like firekat and firenote but they didnt change the kernel. Recently I downloaded one of the lollipop alliance roms and installed on the stock slot and it changed my kernel to OC1. Now safe strap doesn't work and I want to go back to where I was before. I wouldn't mind going to a lollipop rom that is rooted. Or just plain stock rom that is rooted. I need help since there is so many different tutorials and methods and things to download. I'm newer on the rooting and such, so any help is appreciated. I am able to use the phone still it just doesn't cycle thru safe strap on the boot like it did before and sometimes it won't even boot up it just freezes and I have to factory reset to get it back. So I quit restarting. I'm limping on one leg so to speak. I assume I have installed something wrong and I just want guidance towards something rooted and stockish. Link me a tutorial or something or just give it to me straight. I have better than average skills in this but I mainly follow guides of some kind. So keep it as simple as possible. Thanks

Safestrap doesn't work with kernels newer than NC2, so in order for safestrap to work, you can do either of the following things-
1. The simpler way (do this if after getting safestrap to work again, you want to install a pre-rooted stock OC1 ROM) : Install the apk NC2flasher. It'll flash the NC2 kernel and then when you reboot, you'll get access to safestrap once again. Download it from http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3452253&d=1440595672. Before installing the apk, download the pre-rooted OC1 stock rom from here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934549604 and place it on your device storage/extSD card. After rebooting into safestrap, factory reset and flash the zip and you're good to go!
2. The more intensive way (do this if you want to rollback to NC2 stock completely):
Download odin from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711451
Download the stock odin flashable NC2 files from here: https://mega.nz/#F!wg5wRQrQ!vR7a6pze9dgSWjbaRSyhWA
Warning: These are data_wipe tars, so take complete backup since the internal memory of the device will be erased completely (backup to PC/cloud/extSD card)
Put your phone in the download mode; it can be done through pressing the volume down and home button simultaneously while powering up the phone.
You'll notice that the 2 starting characters of the files (BL,AP,CP and CSC) are the same as the options found in Odin. Keeping the default checkboxes on the left side as they are, load the files in Odin as they match with their downloaded counterparts (ie. BL in BL, CP in CP, CSC in CSC and AP in AP) and flash it.
You're done!
Awesome thank you

Going to lollipop

So I'm in nc2 and wanna jump up to a new rom. Thinking alliance, biggins or Arya mod. What all are you guys running and how'd you do it? I can seem. To find the thread on how to do it. Did you use safestrap or flashfire? If you used flashfire, how do you use that? I must have the stupid on the search here lately...

You got it easy.
Root with towelroot, Install SuperSU, Install Busybox, Install Safestrap 3.75. Done.
Reboot to safestrap and flash what you need. Don't worry about flashfire, you probably won't ever need to use it. Or at least out of my experience I've not had to use it. (For the note 3 that is)
I'm much more versed in rooting and roms than you assume. I'm on dk7.1 and have odind many times. Just curious as to the actual process of switching to lp. And what would need done to go back to kk if necessary

Before you flash, just back up your kk rom. And then when you flash the rom, make sure to flash the kk kernel so safestrap is still accessible

It doesn't matter what ROM you are currently on you can always odin back to NC2 and then upgrade to NL1 or OC1/2.
Examples:
If you're on OC1/2 and want to go back to NL1, you would full odin back to NC2, re-root and such. Then flash a NL1 based ROM.
If you're on NL1 without root and want OC1/2, full odin back to NC2, re-root, etc. Then flash a OC1/2 based ROM.
I've never even head of nl1. And Don you need to flash the kernel and radio or is just the kernel necessary?
Sent from my SM-N900A using Tapatalk
It depends on the ROM you plan on going to.
AllianceROM v12 doesn't require a kernel flash
UrDroid Stock Deodexed requires an OC1 flash (optional OC2 patch available)
OC1 is 5.0
OC2 is a security patch for OC1
NL1 is 4.4.4
NJ2 is 4.2.2

Are you sure about alliance? I tried to flash that and got stuck on the Galaxy Note 3 screen
Sent from my SM-N900A using Tapatalk
I've ran Alliance v12 more than a few times on both my phone and my girlfriends phone, I've not once had to flash a kernel if you get stuck reboot into the stock recovery and look at the top, if it says OC1 then your on the right kernel. But flashing it definitely won't hurt anything.
This is taken out of the changelog for AllianceROM v12
ROM will automatically flash OC1 Kernel so after install, just hit reboot.

Failure to install TWRP ROM [Samsung Galaxy S4 Active]

So I have been trying to install a custom recovery on my rooted phone, I am on 5.0.1 or 5.1.1 not sure at the exact moment but when I go to install TWRP Odin mode I believe it is, is stopping me from continuing so the device is just sitting at "Downloading... Please do not turn off the target". I attempted multiple different flash APKs (Because I don't have a computer). I did see another post with someone who has the same problem (not sure if he used a PC) but this is very annoying. Can someone please assist me?
I am making sure my device is rooted, I have the proper version for my device I just need to use this to install Xposed installer on my phone, but again, no PC access..

Based on a post you made in one of the other threads it sounds like you have the i537 (AT&T version of the phone). If this is the case you have a locked bootloader, meaning you cannot flash any custom recovery. You're only option is to use FlashFire to flash things.
If I misinterpreted what you said and you do indeed have the i9295 (international version of the phone), you should be able to put a custom recovery on your phone.
Based on what you said above, you are putting the phone in download mode where you can use Odin to flash things to your phone. Odin is a PC program and you can only use the phone in download mode in conjunction with a computer. You need to put your phone in recovery mode in order to be able to flash things without a computer. It sounds like you need to do some more reading about what you're attempting to do and how your phone works because you are starting to mess with some low-level programming on your phone and you could permanently brick it.
This is true, I have the AT&T variant. My friend sold me this for real cheap so brick in it isn't the worst thing. I did state I cannot use a PC as I do not have one. I also don't believe I can put my phone into recovery mode, or at least I don't know how. I tried [HOME+PWR+VolDown] and I believe it tried to install the recovery. So, maybe I am missing something there is a lot to read. Do I need a computer to do this or can I found it without?
Could you please maybe private message me or leave it here, a step tutorial on how to put this phone into recovery and install the a custom ROM. (I know how to use flashify already) the only issue is the locked bootloader. Thanks for the information. I do not have the international phone. Just AT&T. Not unlocked.
You cannot install a custom recovery or flash anything through the recovery menu because AT&T locked the bootloader. The only ROM that exists right now for the i537 is the Slick As Hell ROM in the development section.
As far as learning more, check the stickies it's always a good place to start.

You didn't need to post this question on two different threads. Check the other links in the stickies.
