Now im trying to root it with towelroot, but it says my device isn't supported. And I even tried the 3 codes you put into the app, and it still said my devise was unsupported. PLEASE HELP! Thank you

What firmware are you on (we need the alphanumeric code) NC9, NE3 or NH3? There is no such thing as 4.4.3 for the i537.
Once you determine what firmware you are on, go to the following thread and follow the link to root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2629093

My S4A is running rooted NH3.
You have to reflash the inital KitKat (NE3) firmware, but minus the bootloader, using your existing NH3 bootloader, then re-root with towelroot. You can then reflash NH3 AP, CP, CSC. Thanks to @Devo7v files and instructions are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-active/general/guide-update-to-i537-att-firmware-t2835481

@Lane5SOS, do what @Devo7v suggested and read through the link he gave you. Hadn't known till now of your quick thread, [GUIDE][HOW-TO] Root Any i537 AT&T Firmware, which you created 2/1/2015 here. Excellent helpful wrap up to those seeking info on rooting their AT&T SGH-i537 Samsung Galaxy S4 Active.
Also similar is Sunderwear's thread, Galaxy S4 Active 4.4.2 Kitkat ROOT, here. Like you, Devo7v, @Sunderwear has always been very helpful in the past.
Again, Devo7v, you have my respect, my trust in your reliable XDA posts, and many, many thanks!:highfive:

Trying to figure out how to get 4.4.2 on my motox XT1053 tmo. I rooted it and installed a custom rom before the update, and I'm not sure how to get to 4.4.2, all the custom roms seem to require 4.4.2 before installing them. Much of the documentation seems to be outdated or missing, I've been looking for days or I wouldn't ask.
How do I get a 4.4.2 custom rom installed if I only have 4.4 installed currently?
Easiest thing to do is download the 4.4.2 firmware and flash with fastboot and mfastboot.
Or, return to stock and take the ota.
Everything you need to know is in this great guide.

Good luck!

MLG is not official. NC2 is the official kitkat.
Restore your phone to MJ5(if your on MLG only), root, install safesrap, then upgrade with odin to Dyamic Kat or Undriod kitkat that already has root, install safestrap.

Sorry for the noob-ness of this question. I just went to the DynamicKat (3.0 NC2 version) thread and read the OP.
The OP makes it look like you need to use SafeStrap to flash this... Above, you referenced ODIN. I'm very confused.
I'm getting a warranty replacement Note3 this morning in the mail and, assuming it comes with 4.3, I'm NOT taking the NC2 OTA. I'm really wanting to get rooted KK.
Any advice or guidance you can further provide would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you.
If you get a 4.3 device you will need to root it, then use Odin, then install safestrap.
Here's an example.

A new update is being released for the S5 Active, since i didn't see a thread on how to root the device... Here it is...
Towel root works on the NE4 build but will not work on the new NG3 update.
So what i did was downgraded with the firmware file found on Sammobile with the NE4 build.
Then used Towel root and installed SuperSU, it said it failed to install Supersu but after a reboot all was well.
Oh this was a AT&T S5 active.
SuperSU worked fine and root was verified!
I haven't posted much before. I would like to give back to the awesome community who has done so much for me!

Trying to use your same method
I am trying to root my phone with Towel root and it won't recognize my phone either. My phone deleted all it's text messages, for some reason, last night and I need to root my phone so I can save some of the messages. Came across your post and figured you can help me. I downloaded the may version of the sm-g870A and odin. Odin won't open. I've never done this before and could use your help. If I can downgrade my firmware, or change it, in a way where Towel root would recognize my phone that would be exactly what I need. Also tried all the Modstrings, did no good. Whatever you could say to help, can hit me up personally and help me, idk if you could do that, but it'd be awesome if you could help me.

NE4 and NG3 are official kernel images...
Downgrade consists of flashing the NE4 kernel image via Odin...then rooting the device....and then flashing the NG3 kernel via Odin which will give you a fully rooted rom that is the latest version...
Knox will NOT trip if you follow the thread instructions...
We are forced to downgrade the kernel to gain root due to the exploit being patched in the latest update...
The root method works perfectly....g
Thank you for your help

My question is. Is TowelRoot the way to root the phone or do I need the tar file through Odin??
I've read and can't really find an answer unless I've looked in the wrong place. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes it is safe and because you are not downloading it from the Google play store you have to check unknown sources and so you get a warning saying that it may be malicious software or something like that.
Also, if you have an anti virus app on your phone like Avast it'll also say that the Towelroot app is a threat. Its not just ignore it.
To get root there has to be some sort of vulnerability on the phone's firmware for the root program to exploit.

Trying to root my S5 from 4.4.2. Phone is a SM-G900A,Baseband; G900AUCU2ANG3, KERNEL 3.4.0-2178781.
