Hey guys, longtime reader. I was wondering if there was an app that i could DL that would give me the funtionality of the Hero's Mobile network sharing settings? I have searched far and wide and have not seemed to find a solution for me to easily tether my PC running Ubuntu 9.04 to my G1 running Cy's 4.1.11.
Sorry if this has been discussed elswhere, and as you can see ive been a member for a long time and have never needed any help, but i have been lookin for about a week now and have only been able to find these 2 sites about it: http://joshuaredstone.blogspot.com/2009/01/bluetooth-tethering-from-ubuntu-to.html and http://www.kryogenix.org/days/2009/...thout-jailbreaking-or-installing-applications
The second one is the one im inquiring about.
thanks
Please correct me if I'm misreading you, are you looking to tether? ie. use your cell phone to get ubuntu online?
If so I use aNetshare, first result in google. It has worked best for every rom I've ran, the older RCs, cupcake and now donut. I'm roaming 99% of the time so that may be why the other more popular ones give me trouble. idk...
For any of them to work you'll need root and su permissions. There is a paid app out there which claims to tether w/o root or su. I think through usb.
yah im slightly confused as to what exactly it is you are looking for as well...but the one im using is called PdaNet just google it and its one of the first choices.
its free.
it claims it works without root, i wouldnt know cuz im rooted =] but you can try!
it works via usb so it charges the phone while you're surfin =]
EDIT....heres the link. http://www.junefabrics.com/android/index.php
PS. my bad...didnt realize you were already running cyan =]

sorry if i wasnt clear before but i have Ubuntu and want to know how to tether my G1 through bluetooth using Ubuntu....i cant get netshare to work through Ubuntu. how did you get it to work?
bluetooth, you got me there... sry
Ya, sry no idea how to tether via bluetooth. I really only use wifi. Dunno why(maybe because of high data traffic) but my phone would constantly die while tethered and charging via usb.
Other than getting ubuntu to see&install my wireless card(nothing to do with my phone) I don't remember having any problems getting it to see or connect to my phone.
Or am I still confused and what you're really trying to do is use the internet you already have working on ubuntu to get you phone online?
for whatever reason my Ubuntu 9.04 does not automatically read my phone (Tmobile G1) as a modem through the usb. whenever i configure the steps (http://technologyheaven.com/2009/08/27/phoneasmodem/) to get it to read my phone it still says not connected even though it IS connected. I know the usb ports work cause i can get it to mass storage...just not modem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thx!
it's been a long while since I used USB tethering (anyone remember tetherbot & socks proxies). You may need to have the android sdk installed or atleast know how to communicate with your device via console. Connecting as a mass storage device and as a modem are two different things, so one may work great while the other still needs more setup.
Hopefully someone else with more experience can chime in.. please.. anyone...
I don't know a ton about cyan's roms but I'm assuming they come rooted by default. Is there a reason you don't want to use the wifi method for the time being?
edit: fwiw, you can use the wifi method while charging via usb. But, with heavy traffic(downloading huge files consecutively) the usb may not be able to keep up with the battery usage.. especially if on a 3g network. Using the stock charger & wifi on 3g the battery actually gets a little charge(power supply is ~500mA on usb, ~1A on charger). Either way, usb or wifi, usb or charger, turn off your screen for best results.
Im surprised no one mentioned Wireless tether for root users:http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
supports both wifi and bluetooth.
@B3astofthe3ast, cool I didn't know that(no bt on my laptop, ya it's kinda old heh). For whatever reason on several different roms I get terrible data when using that app, it might be because I'm 100% roaming with no 3g ever. Tethers to pc fine just 9/10 doesn't seem to be able download stuff.
thx, but i have that (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/). anyway, im thinking its got something to do with my comp and not the phone itself, seeing as i can get on internet with windows just fine. Im just trying to move away from windows and to Ubuntu.
p.s. i dont have a wireless card in my self built computer, thats why i dont use wifi!
I've been trying many multiple things to get wireless tether to work. I currently have CM7 installed and have tried Wireless Tether for Root (versions 1.6, 2.0.7, and 3.1b2) and I've tried Barnacle Wifi Tether ver 0.6.7. In both apps, I can start tethering, but I can never see the phone from any other device (Win7, Evo 4G, iPod, Xoom). I also never see any data being transfered (up or down).
I swear I used to have tethering working on my Hero before, but I just cannot get anywhere with it. Does anyone have any suggestions I can try? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Make a Nandroid Backup!
Then Try Flashing a Different Rom, This way you can possibly determine if its the Rom, or whatever else that it may be!

Thanks for the suggestion. That's actually the last thing I tried before I posted my question. I tried the Toast Hero 2.4.0 ROM and that didn't make any difference. I still could not get anywhere with any wireless tether, couldn't see it, and it never reported any data transfer.
Any other suggestions?
Kushdeck ftw. I tether everyday. Great rom too.

Don't know if your Big on Sense Roms? But you could try my ExEnHeroC Rom... I'm Sure that Tether works, at least for Mostly everyone that I've spoke to! It should also work on the SenseFroyoV8.1 or V8.5 Roms too!
Also what Tether App are you using?
Good Luck!
Thanks everyone for the help. I think I figured out the issue. I think my issue is that the Hero can only do Ad-Hock connections. Am I correct in that? I was trying to connect to the Hero with another Android phone (HTC EVO) and a Xoom. It appears that neither of them support Ad-Hock connections.
Am I correct in all of this? Can the Hero support non-Ad-Hock connections?
hero only supports adhoc signals
Well, shoot. I thought for sure I tested it on a Win7 laptop and an iPad. I guess I didn't.
Does the bluetooth tether option work with the Hero? Thanks for all of your help with the WiFi option.
apple devices and windows will conect to it fine linux has issues.
I never had problems with Linux.
Oh, how I love my Evo 3D. Hotspot is so much better. Especially with 4G. I have my blue ray/ netflix player tethered to it to watch netflix.
"Damn you look even uglier in 3D"
im not sure about other linux distroes but on ubuntu at least it always just hangs on connecting then itll disconnect itself after five minutes or so. usb tether always worked fine though.
Have you tried PDAnet(Bluetooth&wired) ? If you don't want to switch ROM's just for tether. I've had it just over a year & am very happy with it especially after this last update.
So I am strongly considering the Moto X not that Verizon has Moto Maker and the 32GB verizon. The one thing I love on my current phone running CM10.2 is the ability to tether my laptop to it for internet access without getting charged extra by verizon while I travel. Usually in a monthly billing cycle when traveling with work I'll consume about 20GBs of data. Can I do this with the Moto X without getting charged tether fees? Do I need to root it to do this?
FYI: I'm i'm on an unlimited plan
If you root with RockMyMoto, yes..
For using Wifi Tether for Root app, see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449534 You MUST use the specific version now linked in the first post, or it wont work.... In other words, do NOT get the version from the Play store. (I'm using this way with my Rooted X, also unlimited plan)
To use the built in tethering app see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2443562 (I haven't tried it, but there are many reports in that thread of it working).
If you don't want to root, then you could try Foxfi. Not sure if it works, I've never used it.
I have always used THIS, on multiple phones. I'm on the 3.3 beta 2 and it works fine. Go into settings, and make sure the device profile is Generic ICS/JB (wlan0), and check the WiFi driver reload, MSS clamping, and Routing fix options.

For some reason I couldn't get that version to work on my Verizon X. While the PC and tablet saw the X, it saw it as WLAN0, and never properly connected to the phone.
The thread I linked to has a patched version that works properly for me, including seeing the "hot spot" as the SSID I set on the phone, and letting the PC and tablet connect to the phone and get to the internet.
The x is awesome for one. All u gotta do is root and follow the thread to use built In tethering appreciate. Works great. Or better yet flash Nitro's eclipse ROM. Its all done and its a great rom

I did notice the wlan0 where on the other device I had u could change it or use the ssid, but my tab and others will connect? The initial connection always funks up, usually just have to cycle WiFi from the device and cycle tether too. U try reboot, fix perms, and cache/dalvik wipes? Haven't tried modifying that system apk, heard about some issues and this never gives much, if any.

I tried everything. Yes.
I liked the way wifi tether worked on my past phones. Using the patched copy found in this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449534 , which is also needed for the GNex w/4.2, works just like it did on my Bionic, Thunderbolt, and other past phones. No issues. After initial config and allowing SU, just launch the app, tap to start tethering, go to my PC, Tablets, etc.. and connect and go.
The APK is originally from https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1661#c109 however, I just noticed lower down in that discussion a patch was added to the experimental 3.4 ( https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1661#c197 ) so I might try that.
I don't feel the need to mess with those system files to use the phone's built in tethering app. I don't have to. I only offered that because some were using it since Wifi Tether for Root wasn't working.

editig one cell in the system settings to get the built-in hotspot app to work is hardly messing with the system files. i've done this on my last three phones and they've all worked flawlessly. plus the built-in app has decent security features.

I know you read the one thread I posted a link to as you asked about doing the SQL edit, and posted a screen shot from your D4.. Its OP talks about replacing a bunch of APK files which are system files...
In Post #24 of that thread, thepolishguy the SQL tweak doesn't work.
... hence my saying I didn't want to mess with a bunch of system files.
Not to mention, side loading an APK and using it is easier. It might not be "cleaner" or seem as "integrated" but it works.
Awesome thanks everyone. I defintely plan on rooting my phone and installed xposed.
I looked around and did not see this. Now that the phone is opened up, if there an easy way to just enable the wireless tether?
I've had WiFi tethering since I bought the phone right after it came out, I'm not sure why others don't have the option. I found it in Settings -> More -> Tethering & Mobile Hotspot. I've had this on KK 4.4.4 as well as LP 5.1. Is it because it's only available with non grandfathered unlimited data devices (I think they got rid of that recently too)?
Unlimited can tether the same way, but we have to pay $20 a month. Xposed module xtether seems to work. It let me turn tether on without the message that I need to upgrade. Did not connect and test it yet.

Just flash CF's 1.1A ROM..it has wireless tether enabled where you can turn on in the stock app. No need for a separate xposed app.

Anyone care to share what to edit to get WiFi tethering? Flashing a different ROM is not really what I wanna do right now, would like to just do it on my newly unlocked stock rom Turbo

I'm interested in the WiFi tether as well.
Install xposed, look for xtether, I've used it all day and 0 issues.
Alternatively, I think you can add the following line to /system/build.prop:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true

So I need a little help please. I have my phone unlocked, rooted, twrp installed, made a backup, and now SU updated from reading on here. I have a UDP and want my wifi tether to work without installing custom roms. I'm happy at this point with what stock does. I'm not the greatest with this, but I am not afraid to read. So to my problem. I'm stuck with the xpose thing. I just don't see or get what needs to be done to install it. I read I need to flash something first? But i'm not sure why. I looked a little at just adding the line in the build file but was not sure if that would still work or if that was old news. Please someone point in the right direction.
Thanks.

Use a file manager with root capabilities such as solid explorer, amaze file manager or whatever to edit the build.prop file. It's in /system/. Add 'net.tethering.noprovisioning=true' without quotes and reboot. Tethering within the settings app should now work.
Thanks for the reply. I added it at the end of the file. Rebooted and turned the tether on. no messages. I think I'm good to go. Again Thanks for the help.
Thanks for the tip on the build prop edit. I've been trying to figure out how to do this for a bit now. Just to confirm, this method will work on the latest version of 5.1 so long as I'm rooted and unlocked, correct?
It has worked great for me. I do not load in ROM'S or make a lot of other changes to my phone. Paying the 25.00 is just math for me. I was giving 30.00 a month to Verizon to pay for tethering. Now I don't. So in 1 month I come out ahead. You need your boot loader unlocked, and will need to pay for that 1 time.
Will this tether-unlock be "visible" to VZ and cause me issues under my unlimited plan? (I presume by smooth's reply that he hasn't had this problem, but I want to be sure)
I'm coming from my Note4 which I specifically bought so that I could have a rooted phone. Making the switch back to a non-rooted phone has been frustrating so far to say the least. My main sticking points are:
Wireless file transfers w/ windows
adblocking
disabling loud volume alert
titanium backup
Wireless file transfers w/ windows
I hate MTP. And, I use MusicBee for music management. It allows you to transfer files wireless as long as you mount the wireless device as a virtual drive in windows. I've tried just about every protocol I could with wireless file transfers.
1. Samba servers
While this was my go to as root, but it seems like there isn't an app that can setup your phone as a samba server without root .
2. SSH
This seems to work fine as far as apps on addroid, but I wans't able to get it mounted as a virtual drive despite tinkering with win-sshfs. What a headache.
3. FTP
My current solution. I'm using on windows DriveMaker to mount the ftp network location as an actual network drive and not just an internet location (for some reason these two things are very different despite interfacing w/ them the same way in explorer). The server is where it gets weird to me though. Only one app actually allows me to write to the Note8 server: WiFi Pro FTP Server
I've tried: Ftp server Pro, FTPServer, Server Ultimate Pro to no avail. I can mount them as network locations and then as virtual drives, but throw an error when you try to do write to them. If anyone has any insight onto how WiFi Pro FTP Server is able to access both internal and external storage it would be appreciated. It seems WiFi Pro FTP Server uses a built in Nougat file explorer to choose your location, while the others have custom ones, which seems to make a difference.
4. WebDav
WebDav has the same issue as FTP, though I haven't found a magic app like WiFi Pro FTP Server for WebDav.
adblocking
I'm using block-this now. Seems to do the trick. Though the VPN notifcation is annoying. Is there a way to disable that?
disabling loud volume alert
My biggest UX gripe with TouchWiz quite honestly. I'm always plugging into my cars aux, and getting this useless notifcation that I have to interact with. Usually use an Xposed module to deal with this like Wanam.
titanium backup
Haven't found anything similar with this on non-roots, but let me know what you use.
What issues are you facing without root? How are you solving them? Do you have better solutions for any of the points I brought up?
I was thinking about whining about not being able to use Viper for eight or nine posts, then jumping off a bridge.
Ya know, if you spend a grand on a phone that has a dicey chance of being rooted, and you can't live your life without root.....
Em maybe read through the forums ?
Root is here and has been for a few days.
There is also twrp and a custom Rom which is already at V2.

The only things that I will miss about having root are ad blocking and being able to monitor wakelocks. I don't care about custom roms or kernels anymore, and haven't since the S3 days. I did always miss the ability to change up the way the phone looks, but Nova is fairly decent for that. I am still on a Note 4, but only had root on it for a short period of time before breaking it and losing it. When I had it, the main thing that I did was work out why my phone was always awake. There wasn't a whole lot of development for it.
For me, root just isn't as important as it was when I was on the Evo or S3. Those were both complete failures at battery life and root was almost a requirement to be able to make the phones last. Note 8 seems to have decent battery life.

There's no root for the Snapdragon version of the phone. Only Exgynos.
Well im surviving pretty damn good because the phone itself even unrooted is awesome. However its only been released a couple days and knowing everything we do about the snapdragon situation, obviously that will take a while to achieve root. So I know it will happen eventually so in the meantime I am going to not worry about it and enjoy the hell out of my phone.
I root only for tether and maybe certain customization's that come with a certain ROM. Luckily an answer for tether has been found that works, and I am ok with theme's for now.

Definitely a great phone. I think I may have found a soultion to my issue of file transferal using sshDroid and expanDrive.
I haven't had a real need for Root in quite a while as well. Since Samsung has gotten into giving us the ability to add themes, and I also use Nova, the themeing options are all I really look for now a days. Ad Blocking would be great, but not really necessary for me.
I came from the S7E on AT&T, the root method for it was not a real viable option for me, way too "unstable" was the feedback I was reading in threads, so I never even tried. I wont even be trying on my N8
I survive by installing the unbraded Samsung Galaxy Note 8 firmware, running BK Disabler, using Ablock Plus for Samsung browser and installing the Pixel Launcher. The battery life is phenomenal and I am not missing any features all while running a debloated rom..

Ya know, it's sacrilege to be on XDA forums and not want to root your phone. /snark/
I missed Viper4Andriod also custom Rom .
It's actually not that bad nowadays one of the main reasons I used to root my phones was for customisation battery life and performance but the Note 8 has all of that right out the box as far as ads go I simply pay to have the ads removed and for those annoying ass selfish apps that insist on having ads and no option to pay to have them removed I use Lucky Patcher no I don't feel bad about it, the only thing I do miss is having Titanium Backup
Root these days seems to be more trouble that it's worth. Things aren't as easy as they used to be and there seems to be more compromises that there were before, as well. I'm happy with my stock experience but I do miss TB. I guess that's the only thing I'm really missing. Otherwise things are pretty awesome on my end.
i would never own an unrooted phone.
NEVER
Ever since I discovered Adguard Pro, I have had no reason to root my current. I still have an old Note 4 and Note Edge rooted to run Adaway but Adguard Pro requires no root to block ads in apps.
I miss free Wireless hotspot on OG unlimited plan, Verizon branded phone. I haven't tried the workaround yet to see if it works.
