Should this be a concern? - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Xperia z3 compact popping display: http://youtu.be/9JrfMjiNB9E
Mine does the same thing. Serms there is a hollow spot with something like tape or maybe a buffer of some kind. Anyway it sort of bugs me. Anyone break one of these down or know why it does this?

That's probably what it is. They put tape inside to reduce creaking and make it feel a little more solid. Original Moto X had a blue silicon pad inside with adhesive on both sides.

This is ridiculous, why would you even press on the screen that hard?!

My G3 or Note 3 don't do that. I can press as hard as I want and the display will crack before it bends. Is the glass bending? I am looking to get a Z3 but I would like to know what is actually moving.

I lightly press my screen and get the same result...it's not pressing hard at all.
What kind of joke is this phone?
So many issues.

I was going to order one now I don't know... It was tempting with the 10% off for students but seriously why must all good phones have issues? I just wish that my G3 was water proof.

what the hell? the screen flexes that easily? i've never had a phone that did that...
between this crap, the spontaneous cracks, and the scratch magnet back cover, i'm seriously regretting my purchase

Yep there's a lot going wrong with this phone...you've got to wonder about the legitimacy of all the early glowing reviews.

it's hard to get a feel for build quality when the review just consists of 2-3 hours with the phone. Looks nice, is thin/light, runs well -- A+!

Very happy with the phone myself, but I don't listen to as much of "the sky is falling" crap as others. This doesn't bother me though it is nice there is some bend, probably help with drops versus a straight shatter depending on how it hits..

I have zero bend/give

are there production dates stamped on the phone? i'd be curious to see if they switched materials at some point.
or if they're made in different factories

my wife's phone pops when you are looking for it and press alot more than you would ever do during normal use. Not really an issue on this particular phone.
If it would pop just during normal operation I would consider it a problem though.

In this German test the glass back display cracked spontaniously:
http://www.areamobile.de/handys/4275-sony-xperia-z3-compact/testbericht
I tried to test the glass panels in the shop the other day by pressing it with my thumb a bit and I noticed that the front display could be pressed in quite easy, changing the colours on the display. Seems like pretty thin glass, hence the many reports of broken panels I guess.

It reminds me of the old cheap watches you got as as a kid that went all black when you press on the screen. Man i lobe everything else about the phone., well mostly, the other issue i have is terrible speaker phone quality when people are talking on their end. It sounds low and very crackely. Cant have that with my business. Anyone else have the speaker problem? Sigh i was so happy to get this thing and the smooth and fast feel is the best.

I'll tell you what is the issue. There are lots and lots of people who've bought this phone in a short time and the ones with faulty units are all gathering in communities such as this one. So you will have the illusion that this phone (or any other) is a major problem child, if you look no further than these online communities. It's like concluding that humans are a physically impaired and unhealthy species just because the people in hospitals are mainly sick and wounded ones.

I'm interested in buying the xperia x1

I'm considering to buy the xperia x1 but I've done research on the phone and there are apparently cracks showing on the phone after a period of time.
Based on research, it shows that it mainly occur to only the silver xperia x1 as people are saying, the phone is made by hard plastic, but the black one has rubber feeling on it? Can someone clarify that please?
Would be much appreciated if someone can give me all the answers i'm looking for, cos my old phone just died and i'm in need of a new phone.
I believe xperia's way of functioning and the windows mobile feature is the perfect phone for me, but if there are so much problem with it, i really do not wish to spend a fair amount of money and have no satisfactory.
Thank you to all the people that reply in advance !
So far my Xperia (black) has no cracks. But since I bought it in september 2009 I think I have to wait a bit before delivering a definitive judgement.
By the way: No offence meant but I doubt that everybody whose Xperia got cracked has always treated it appropriately. I would not be surprised if some of the people who complain about cracks in their Xperia's case had dropped the phone several times.
I do not doubt that there is a general problem with cracks but my personal experience from my time as a multimedia shop assistant is that some customers are not always honest when claiming warranty for their devices.
I highly recommend you the Xperia X1 because it's a great device. It has a beatiful high resulution screen on which movies and pictures look simply incredible. The panel system is really unique (you have the possibility to use different user interfaces simultaneously) and and thanks to Windows Mobile it is completely up to you what you want to do with your phone (no restrictions like on the Iphone).

You can always recognize a noob when u see one....well actually you can treat it like a baby prince but this sh** will crack !!
Now as much as I love my xperia the FACT is that it cracks....its defo a gd fone though, and one of a kind in its category !!

Although I can imagine why you'd think that, it's not correct. Even people who treated it with utmost care (never dropping, using carrying case, even silicone protectors) got cracks. Hell, nearly everyone did.
I've got this phone for over a year now; it lasted long, but eventually, two weeks back - guess what? Cracks. Guess I couldn't skip this dance either.
had mine for over a year never seen a crack on it
maybe it's a question on how often and violently one

the most common cracks are not near the stylus but rather on the frame around the battery...and these have nth t do with usage...
Unless u'll say it depends on how violently and often one removes the battery
Folks like I wrote I don't want to accuse anybody of anything. It's just like this my Xperia has never been dropped and guess what, it has no cracks at all. But I also stated that my Xperia is still relatively new and thus I cannot deliver a judgement yet.
It's sad that some people feel obliged to insult others by calling them noobs as soon as they discover that others look at things differently.
But back to topic: What I like also about the x1 is its keyboard and its general look and feel. It's really a pleasure to hold it in my hands. And I like the quality of audio playback too.
Yes, X1 has its shortcomings too (tell me a device that hasn't) but I totally recommend this phone.
I would Defiantly recommend the X1 it's an amazing phone. I sort of had problems with hanging once in awhile but after I installed 6.5 all that has stopped. As for the cracks I guess it depends, I didn't get cracks until I dropped my phone but thats normal if you drop your phone on a hard surface multiple times, the same with every phone I had so far but I guess people are saying they havent dropped once it and still got cracks so IDK. I swear on my life the Back cover is steel not rubber. Edit nvm I don't have the black one so I don't know if it's different from the Silver one.
mine black back is steel aswell... but there is rubber on top and bottom of back
Thanks, you guys are awesome for the reply.
Its a definite that i'm gonna get the phone now.
The windows mobile just gets my attention so badly haha. Thank you all for the reply and your personal opinion, much appreciated !

[Q] 2nd One....

Hi guy, just received my replacement htc One and the QC is even worse than the first. First One had an uneven top speaker slip (sharp edge overhang) uneven glass and recessed power button. This replacement is uneven top and bottom with sharp speaker slip overhangs to left again, sim tray is tatty, but the worst issue (and a new one) is the volume rocker that is so proud of the body on the screen edge you can see where the chrome plating finishes. I've spoken to my supplier and they are sending another replacement. Love the phone, hate the QC. Has anyone got a close to decent unit? First was HT serial, second is SH. Anyone else seen the volume rocker pics (see attached)
Cheer
I've gotten two perfect units. It just luck when you order early on. It sucks!!

Thanks for the reply, I also noticed a lot of glue residue around the volume rocker too which might be connected to the issue.
What seems to be consensus on the quality of this phone?

LoL well if you get a good unit then it's amazing if you get a bad unit then HTC is devil and has major problems The phone seems to be great quality like HTC usually does. There are some issues right now as the phone hasn't been out long and they are trying to pump out as many as possible. I by some miracle have gotten lucky with the ONE. This suprisses me because I generally have to exchange phones I've done as many as 5 before I got a perfect unit (haha it was a iphone 5). It's really a crap shoot when phones are first released if you are the kind of person who can spot a dead pixel on 468PPI screen then you are the kind of person who is anal retentive about their phone (nothing wrong with that I admit it proudly heck I inspect phones under high powered flashlight and direct sunlight ).
I can't really say anything other then it doesn't appear that there are any more bad unit with the HTC One than with any other phone. Unfortunately most phones get released with some manufacturing bugs that have to be worked out.

I have gathered up reports of the glass cracking by itself, and have come up with 6 reports already. Very concerning considering the availability of the phone. If you have a similar problem happening to you, please do post here, and if possible, please fill out this survey.
Thanks

Lets say they sold 1000 phones so far, I would guess more but lets be very conservative. 6 "cracking by itself" in 1000 phones = .6% chance
I think we should post on this over and over since it is such a huge chance of happening.
Two of those are also the same person.
The screen is ridiculous flimsy. Putting pressure on the screen easily distorts the display. Sony went cheap with the glass. Don't sit on it, that's for sure.

Lulz. Don't forcible bend you're phone and don't sit on it. Grade A advice.
Also, if you're Z3C is that flimsy, return it, cause mine certainly isn't that flimsy.

Mine is solid too. No flex or distortion at all. And I would say 0.6% is a bit high. Their total sales are probably greater than 1000 by now. Probably closer to 1500 so that's more like .03 - .04%
But not all the 1500 user complain on XDA or the web...

Who said anything about bending?
There are YouTube videos showing the issues with the screen/glass.
I am receiving a second Z3C in the office Friday. I will check it report back.
As for sitting on a phone, this should not be an issue. Everyone is acting as if this was never acceptable practice. I understand that things have changed and phones are getting thinner. However, would you not think a portable compact phone should be purchased for pocketability? I think it's outrageous people are so quick to dismiss and write off this simple and basic concept. And for what? For the sake of being a fan of a company that only wants your money? Apple, Sony, Samsung... They don't give a crap about the consumer.
Pocketability, to me, has never meant you can put a glass phone in your rear pocket.

WHY would you put your phone in your rear pocket and sit on it? It's bad for your back and CERTAINLY bad for any thin piece of technology with glass on it!
Not to mention rear pockets are easy targets for pick pockets...

I'm not concerned about pick pockets. If they want my phone, the could take it from my hands just as easily. So, I guess we are not to put our wallets in our rear pocket either?
I don't sit on it for long periods of time. More time than not, it is out of my pocket while seated. The issue I have is with these excuses for manufactures. I'm not starting a lawsuit or demanding a refund. I'm simply just annoyed by the arrogance displayed. Pointing the finger at consumers for using said devices the way they have been used for years.
I can see the phablet argument. Those devices should not be on your pockets. (brief periods of time) But seriously, a compact phone that risks damage by pocket? That's hardly looking at the real audience your catering too.
Its not damage by pocket. Its damage by weight and force.
Sent from my Nexus 5
My rear glass cracked by itself. I have had my phone since launch (2 weeks now), and used it with care. There was not a single (micro-) scratch on it (no protection), never dropped or otherwise misused. So as to the reports they are scratchy - imho that's not true.
I put the phone on my desk, picked it up 30 minutes later, and noticed the rear glass was cracked. Picture attached. As you can see this is not the kind of cracking you get from dropping, smashing, or putting tension on it. The crack is beneath the surface - I can't feel it. The phone is on it's way back to the shop now, and I'll hope it will be a warranty thing.
Also, on a major Dutch tech-forum there are several stories about cracking glass (3 or 4 now, did't keep count).
It's a real thing! :crying:

Then they'd better shut down their smartphone department considering Apple sold 10 million units on the first weekend and the Z3C got really good previews :cyclops:
Please stop this discussion on back pockets, whether or not that pocket is suitable for phones is not for discussion here. All the reports I posted said front pockets, and that is concerning.

So I take it that the phone wasn't cracked before putting on the table? Did you something on the phone before that could have caused it to heat up?
I've put together a Google forms survey to collect some objective breakage data:
Sony Xperia Z3 / Z3 Compact - Glass Survey
Please take some time to complete the survey whether you've experienced a breakage or not, it's important to have a complete set of data. You will be able to view the survey results after submitting the form.

"spontaneous crack"
like all the screen cracks ive seen before. Most of the time the user actually cracked it (fall, sit on it, etc.. but mostly falls where "oh im lucky nothing broke") and with some more use the crack propagated. yeah with plastic or metal it woulnt propagate tho.

Yeah, until someone is watching at the exact moment their phone spontaneously cracks, I'm not believing it. The way some people talk about the Z3C is like if you breathe on it too hard it will shatter instantaneously. My wife dropped her's from chest height onto hardwood floor with no case, screen protector, nothing. Not a scratch. Yet other people, drop it from a foot up, or having it leaning an it just tips over, and breaks... seems odd. Not calling these people liars, just that there must be more to it than that. Probably something along the lines of what bilboa1 said.

Replacement back for Mix?

Hi All,
Has anyone been able to track down somewhere that is selling a replacement back for the Mix? Mine is scratched quite heavily (likely from using a fairly tight sleeve) and I would really like to replace it....Or for any poor soul out there who has damaged their Mix and would like to sell the back. The irony is the sides of the phone are pristine and not a scratch, not so much on the back.
Thanks in advance

You are wrong. It is made in China.Enough said.Looks good but who cares about quailty. It is NOT CERAMIC but made to looks like it.
I had it and my suggestion is save money for Galaxy S8+ or something more valuable.
I had to take the pictures with my Galaxy tablet so not the best quality but you get the picture. This is with normal day to day use as well, nothing extreme. I even had the Best Buy film on the back for a few months but got tired of the sharp edges from the film every time i unlocked with the finger print sensor. I am wondering if the chemicals from the glue combined with peeling of the film stripped some of the finish somehow as this is supposed to be so scratch resistant. Maybe just one with a faulty finish.

Sorry, I am not sure what your point is. I am certainly not making it up as per the pictures. I was only asking if anyone had seen the replacement backs anywhere. I absolutely love his phone but have been disappointed how much is has scratched on the back, not questioning the online videos etc.
By the way, what was the purpose of your post? If you have nothing to contribute to solving the question at hand why say anything?

Suppose my point was because of shortage of the ceramic maybe they sent some out with different materials.
Mine is just fine after a while of use, both in and out of a protective case, side note mine also doesn't have the "cottage" cheese looking blemishes yours seems to have in the pictures. Its possible to have received a "repaired" one instead of a legit one ... especially if it came from a reseller. There are mentions of this on the xiaomi reddit and other places. its extremely scratch resistant, as much so as any Samsung or other device out there that I have dealt with [and I do service work on phones so I have seen plenty of damaged devices - HUGE number of sub standard Samsung's btw - for the value guy ]
Good luck on finding a part supplier, you MAY find one on Aliexpress ... but there more than likely not going to be genuine parts. Vopmart.com

Screen lifting on Rog 2

Greeting all! I've had my Asus Rog 2 for a little over a month I'd say. I have the proper Republic of Gamers version. I've noticed on the left side, where the attachment port is. An amount of flex in the screen along the seal. It's probably only a millimetre or so. But it flexes up and down when pressed, seeable from a side on view. The other side where the volume and power buttons are does not that this flex. There is also a light difference to sound when tapping that side of the phone while typing. Which I can only put down to the slight screen compressing on the left. I'm not sure how I can to notice it. Some people have said it might be an intentional aspect of the phone to give a small amount of flex/shock absorption but I can't find anything online mentioning it. I'm more leaning towards it being a fault in my phone. It's not once been dropped always been in a case. So yeah. Anyone able to shed light on this?

Finally. Someone with class and crazy sharp senses. I myself have severe OCD. I used to be very verbal about this kind of stuff on the AC forums xD. But on XDA i toned myself down.
First of all. Asus has crap for Quality Control. I had 2 ROGPHONE 2s with different power button height. And in between the lcd and bezel i could see glue. But okay nevermind.
As for the screen lifting near the accessory port, i do not seem to have it. Did you happen to sit on it? Or put the phone in the back pocket? Remembering that this is a tall phone.

Nope! I don't even take the phone to work with me. I swap to my previous phone.
I'm pretty sure it's a fault. It hasn't caused any issues apart from some annoyance to my OCD. As long as it doesn't worsen it's not something I can't live with.

It will worsen. You should get it replaced. Im sure it will eventually become wider from the flexing. Btw do you use the accessory port often? And do you have a tempered glass applied?

I wouldn't have a clue how. I'm in Australia and I purchased the phone via eBay.
I've used the accessory port once, just to check it out. Used the fan for maybe 15 minutes. Other than that I've never removed the piece of rubber there.
And yes, I have a tempered glass protector applied.

Yeah, it's 100% the screen. You can see the black edge of the screen move up and down from the dark drownish side of the phone. I'll just have to keep an eye on it I suppose. Bit annoying though. Pay almost $1,700 for one of the best phones on the market thinking you're going to get something issue free. Ha.

In Indonesia. Samsung has the best QC. I only had 1 issue with Samsung. Which was dust under the S7 Edge screen. But other than that they're very good. But Asus Indonesia is a joke. Its like we get a refurbished phone. I bought 2 rogphone 2s and each had their own defect. First had glue in between the screen and bezel, and my current unit has different volume/power button height.

Which is why I didn't want to buy the Tencent version. Plus it wouldn't work here correctly without getting into the firmware. I just figured I'd spend the money. Get the good one that'll have no issues. I asked the seller if they had warranty which the answer was no. They referred me to a few companies that do insurance on phones.
I've never bought a real expensive phone before, and my previous phone was 4 or 5 years old. It was an S5.
So it is annoying. But other than that I don't have any complaints about it.

Or you could use it until it shows signs of damage defect. Or bring it to an authorized repair shop. Im guessing lack of glue.

Lack of glue probably is the issue. I might see if there are any places around that can do it. Doubtful there would be around me. Best luck is probably Sydney. Which is a few hours away.

If you like DIY stuff. Try using LOCO glue. They helped me seal my Note 8 when it had cracks.

You seriously dont know how comfortable your comment has made me after reading it. I have always had this habit of checking my belongings (from my phone to my own body and muscles) to make absolutely sure there isnt a single even slighgest problem with it and guess what, there always is something to notice for me!
One of the reasons why I had never opted for an oled phone knowing I will notice the burn-ins one day when there isnt any other person who notices them.
Now I finally decided to go for this phone with the assumption that asus knows how to make gaming stuff, but now I can see several issues already, from the obvious red tint to the screen having lots of bandings and horizontal lines on lower brightness on gray color.
Now I can also feel the volume buttons not needing the same pressure and of of them being softer and also the rgb light on the back being poorly so when the light turns on there are some dots around it that also light up(i know that its only a white paper behind the back glass so if there are any print issues they will also light up)
Althought I dont have any serious issues(yet), im definitely not buying another phone from asus or any other not that famous brands for that matter. My last device was a sony x compact which I had for 3 years from when it came out and I still regret selling it, it was so damn perfect.
Btw, thanks for lettin me know that there is a disorder named OCD, I dont know why I hadnt searched about it already.

Hi, well thats quite a positive feedback. I had quite a backlash at AC forums. I've had people say that I'm making AC look like a Mental Issue Forum and some user even boasted how happy his credit card is if he buys a new phone when the old 1 is damaged.(credit card lol) Btw, i wouldn't say its a disorder. Different people have different standards. For me the Mercedes Benz S Klasse might be perfect, but for you it might not be.
And my OCD is definitely worse than yours. My phone can only be touched by me, and me myself dont touch the physical buttons(I'm afraid that it will be damaged).
And never feel alone about something. There will always be somebody out there having the same issue but not posting on the forums xD.

Not a fan of DIY.
So I stopped by a phone repair should this Arvo. The guy said to him it looks as though the battery is swelling. He said thats the side the battery is on so that is the most likely reason for it. He asked if the battery life was alright still.
Hard for me to really notice. I only use the phone on weekends and in the afternoons while home. I generally only charge it every second day, and I unplug the charger once it's at 100%. He said it isn't serious at the moment but if I notice battery charge fading fast, or if it swells a lot more to bring it back and he'll be able to put a new one in.
Just my ****ing luck to get shoddy battery, if that's the issue.

No they didn't. But it's their job so I'd say they can make a pretty fair guess.
I might go back there Monday, as I need my phone this weekend. On Monday I'll go back and tell them to do what needs to be done to fix it.
The battery is on the opposit side from the vent that would be on the left side of the vent, didnt you say that the problem was on the left side of your screen meaning its on the right side of the back??!

Is it? I haven't even checked that. I'll look that up. But yes, it is opposite to the vent.
You're right it is. Interesting. Awesome. Now I'm back to annoyed and confused. Haha.

Yeah trust me the customer services' first guess is battery swell which basicly doesnt happen soon unless you are always charging your phone while playing and overnight and draining it to the last percentage. But is can happen as a result of physical impact or damage, and when it happens you will most probably notice the shortened battery life so I would say it's not a battery problem unless of course proven otherwise.
