[Q] Future damage on HTC One

I can't decide between the HTC One and the GS4 for one reason only: body damage. All the reviews so far have been about the usual stuff, but no one mentions what possibly could happen in the future. Now, all my previous phones have been plastic, and the scratches and damages have been minimal. But I was just wondering, with the metal and all, how badly it would get affected? Would the body degrade after a year?
Some reports say that the S4 is worse than the One or Iphone 5 in terms of durability. But i want to hear from the users themselves what the reality is.
P.S: I won't use a case, because i'm not about to buy a good phone and ruin its looks with a case.

I had an S3 prior to my One, and have vowed not to go plastic again, as after 12 months my S3 especially the back was covered in ugly scratches, even the plastic case I had on for a month scratched the S3.
The One is made from an aluminium alloy since Aluminium as a pure metal I am sure is way too soft, I think Al-Mg-Si is probably the elements but I dont know the mix.

Oh I didn't know that the S3 could get that bad. Most people have said that plastic handles it well. Thanks for your help though.

What a wonderful on-topic post! Thank you soooo much for your kind help and tip. You have solved all my problems.

After having my One for a week , I have managed to bump into the corner of the table and that corner tap into the camera area and shattered the lens cover and damaged the camera modules, it wasn't hard but with sheer bad luck it dented the surrounded area (hardly visible due to no scratches) but it's there.

Seriously, if people thought about what could happen in the future no one would buy anything. Like you I don't really like cases but after paying nearly £500 on this phone I decided to buy a nillkin case off eBay for under £5 and it hardly adds any bulk to the phone, I've still had people ask what phone I've got and been impressed

Ah that's a really nice case. Thanks. Minimal and clean. I was looking at a DoubleDip case as well but it seems a bit odd. This is definitely cheaper and better.

One long and "clean" crack. According to the review(er), the crack happened inexplicably; they did some tests with water and dust/sand, but no drop tests.
It makes me wonder if the Z3C has significant overheating issues. It could be that the excessive heat from 4k recording induces a temperature shock to the glass if it is exposed to cold water shortly after.
Looking at the direction of the crack, it's unlikely that it's the result of "pocket flex"

Since the review doesn't mention anything about an impact to the glass, if it is indeed due to overheating, then a case would likely only increase the risk of cracking.
One possibility is that it happened during 4k video recording, since that's the one activity that makes the phone heat up the most.

But of course, there is also still the possibility that something went wrong during the tempering procedure of the glass back panel of this particular unit. Or maybe the sand test made some micro scratches and caused a weakness? We just can't know for sure.

That's what I don't understand about 'you people'. Why would you use it without any case or so? It should be more then normal to protect such an expensive device somehow.
An accident is so easily made even if it's not your fault, but why take the risk?

Yeah so avoid 4k unless you really need to record it. It seems like several Z2 owners have been experiencing cracked screens. Some were lucky and able to get theirs replaced under Sony warranty but some others aren't. Found that the warranty reviewers would often blame it on the owner for damaging it. I'm just worried that if this is a common issue, we would have to pay for repairs.

While using a case is generally a good idea, it would actually - as I said earlier - increase the risk of cracking if it did indeed happen due to overheating, because a case will make it harder for the heat to dissipate.
And for a phone of which one of its main features is its beautiful design, it's kind of a shame if you must hide that design 24/7 in a case.

Yeah, but in a perfect world you never drop your phone and does the screen never crack without a reason.
Of course the feature of a phone is to look nice, but drop it once or twice and you might have a whole lot of headache, just because you refused to use a case.

Again, there's no mention of a drop in the review; it cracked inexplicable as the review states. Cracks from drops or impacts also usually look a lot messier.

Yeah I know there isn't I read it, but it's not only about the review. There is a saying that goes: Better safe then sorry.
Nowadays people use their phone for a lot more things then just calling/texting people, you can lose so many valuable files when your phone breaks, so why take that risk?

Right. Well then it would be best to use one of these cases with holes in them, for not increasing the risk of cracking from heat.
I suppose that the good thing about a glass back is that, unless it is very wet, it actually "sticks" to your skin much more than any matte plastic back, so the risk of dropping is lower which compensates for its fragility. I tested this by holding my phone (xperia acro s with a soft-touch plastic back) backwards. When I put the phone on my hand with the display facing down, I can hold my hand in a much steeper angle and the phone will only start to slide off very slowly. But if I put the phone on my hand with the plastic back facing down, it will very quickly slide off at a 45 degree angle.

Glass, I think this crack confirms that. There's no certainty about which brand the glass is from though. Some say Dragontrail, others say Gorilla Glass 3. The official product page just mentions "tempered glass"

Since the Xperia Z, people are wondering what kind of glass it is, Sony never said what it is and just referred to it as tempered glass.

Its probably just regular ass glass haha

The rhino shield is a perfect impact protection but I doubt it will protect the glass when the temperature chances too quickly.

Well, went through the reviews on Amazon and found -though generally good- somewhat mixed feedback, especially when it comes down to durability. My current Xperia M is equipped with a regular screen protector foil and it did not need any replacement since about a year. But what really keeps me off is the price of some 25$ (front) or 29$ (front and back) Rhino is calling, so one can get 10+ regular foils for that.
Anyhow, my new Z3C (hope it'll be shipped sooner ) will immediatly be foiled and secured by a case.

I hate cases, I have never had one I liked, so I end up using my phones without a case. I'll do the same with the Z1C.

Supposedly it fell into concrete from around pocket height.
It's also notable how there are actually chunks out of the plastic frame, rather than just scuffs.
Update: the surface texture of the concrete was "a little rough" according to the person who dropped it.

Has anybody ever heard of this? Just heard about it on the radio and checked it out. Seems pretty interesting, but can't seem to find much info on it.

Ok. I checked my gmail history for this purpose
It was end of 2012 and the name the thing was "Crystalusion Liquid Glass Screen Protector", the price was 10 British pounds with shipping.
I applied it as per instruction but I did not notice ANY difference at all, I also pretty sure that I even forgot that I did it in a couple of days... 2012 means that I had HTC One X at that time and i sold it unbroken in spring when M7 was out. So maybe it actually worked xD jk

Hahahaha, I guess not even noticing/remembering you applied could be seen as a good thing?! Honestly though, I don't know anything about this company/technology so I'm a bit weary to try it out.. Compared to "name-brand" protectors like Zagg and Spigen.

I have tried such product long ago for my Samsung S3. I don't find it that helpful. In fact my screen got scratched even after applying that, within one month.
I would say, this product is a gimmic. Mostly, all current device comes with Gorilla glass. So this protector acts like a polish, thats all.

Yeah, I also read that you need to re-apply the product every year or so, which I just don't feel like doing. I'd rather go with a tempered glass protector with a lifetime warranty. Get my money's worth!

I have tested it, and it is does not work.
I applied it on half of screen and tried to scratch the phone. There is no different part of screen with applied Kristall Liquid is scratching the same as part of screen without Kristall Liquid. The same finger prints are the same on both parts of screen.
In my opinion it is waste of money.
I make some video but quality is not the best. maybe later I will upload it on youtube.

Brand new on the market abd works better than other nano products that came before. It just won best in show at CES 2016 from a major trade publication

Question Pixel 5a coating worn out. Google refused replacement.

Only used it for a couple of days. The coating on the right side is already worn out. There is no damage at all (any kinds).
I have contacted Google though Chat on the website. I was told "this is cosmetic damage, it shouldn't affect the device functionality". They will not issue a replacement.
This is probably my last Google purchase for a while. Do your Pixel 5as have the similar problem?

due to the nature of the covering it is susceptible to discoloration. try cleaning it with a quality cleaning agent on a soft cloth. a mild bleach water solution, or something similar.

I don't know whether it would deteriorate or not.
If we all choose to be 'nice' customers to big corporations, they may never improve their QC or manufacturing, don’t you think?

When I wet my phone with 75% rubbing alcohol to clean it I can definitely see the grips from the machine that was holding the case to transport it through the coating solution. Pictures below. There are some circles and straight lines, which to me look like marks from the gripper. They are not visible when the case is dry.
There are two areas on mine that are somewhat shiny and look like grease. I tried to return it but was told I can only get a refurbished phone. The other option is to return it entirely and order a new one. However, I found out that they charge you a $30 restocking fee.
For now I can live with it. It's definitely a manufacturing issue with their coating process that leaves us customers unsatisfied. I think the coating is fine, it's just not uniform.
jlduan, if you look at the second image you can see the same lines you observe, even with it's double line.
In summary, I believe this has more to do with the coating process than the battery.

Thanks for the photos. I just wiped mine with water. I don't have those circles. I really hope it is just the coating, not some consistent heat distribution problem.

yeah, even in yours you can tell it's the coating. Wetting is affected by the direction and the very coating roughness.
You do have one of the circles though towards the left of your fingerprint reader.

If you don't mind ruining your waterproof rating, I guess this works as a potential solution. I'm not sure what coating is being discussed in this thread, but if they apply some chemical (maybe oleophobic coating) then you're not going to have that on a replacement back.

It is nice to know there are already replacement battery cover ready! It will be my last resort. Right now, water resistant is kinda more important

of course that will go out the window. The coating is a thin polymeric coat on top of aluminum.

Not to be rude, but this seems like a petty complaint. You really should get a case anyway. Problem solved.

A $450 device shouldn't be discoloring itself in less than a month of use.

I remember $400 on a Nexus 5 for my wife back in 2013 and I was impressed with what I got for the price. Back then, flagship phones didn't really exist like they do now. People need to realize manufacturers are going to cut corners to keep prices down with what average person can actually afford. Considering the $450 I spent on my Pixel 5a I am extremely impressed with the build quality. Even still, a Spigen case was ordered and put on the phone immediately after I removed it from the box. Anyone that wants a pretty phone with glass or aluminum to show off without using a protective case should probably buy another phone? I bought the 5a mainly for the software experience.

Mine has the same color issue I noticed it the first day in sun. I'm have a black moss google case due any day now. I was wondering if it was just my pixel changing color. I wiped it off and it disappears for a bit then comes back. I'm not sure why they are that way.

Will this phone has coating chipped out like Pixel 5 ?

I think the coating on the 5a is a new process not done on prior Pixels as far as I understand. You might still get scratches, but I don't think it will flake off like in the picture. It's very thin polymer coat fused with the Aluminum.

The device has a plastic-coated back. This is not a flagship glass back or aluminum/metal phone. Yes, plastic, even plastic coatings, will show wear, it will scratch. You bought a budget device, this is one of the drawbacks you have to live with. I'd go even as far as to say be happy it is actually an aluminum back with a plastic coating instead of straight up plastic. Putting it in your pocket will show wear on plastic just from the friction of sliding it in and out of your pocket.

These days a $450 device is a budget to midrange phone. Your comment makes it seem like it is a $1k flagship which needs to have zero imperfections.

The Nexus 5 was a plastic back phone. I still have one in a drawer somewhere. This one has an aluminum back with plastic coating. I would say the Pixel 5A is just as good of a deal if not better. Especially if you account for inflation. As for flagships, yes they were definitely a thing then. That was exactly the time the flagship killer came out, the OnePlus One. It was marketed as the flagship killer. And... For $350 it was plastic backed and had zero water resistance.... Just like the Nexus 5. Lets not forget that both of these devices did not even have stereo speakers.
I don't want to defend Google, a giant, super rich corporation, but come on people, have some common sense. This isn't a Pixel 6. You bought it because it was relatively cheap for decent hardware and great software support. The back is plastic coated, that will wear of super duper easy no matter what and that should have been super obvious. Get a case. Stop caring about superficial imperfections and enjoy your phone for what it is, a good, affordable phone with good specs and great software.

It was more in reply to the OP who said his issue appeared after a few days of use. A few days is all it takes for plastic I see your point about manufacturing defects/inconsistencies too though.

Question Broken screen

Hi everyone,
After 1 and half years my screen has broke yesterday, it fell a stupid fall on charger and broke from top speaker side, even though screen protector is on and case is on. It is what it is.
I am not planning to replace this device, I'll fix screen, so any recommendations? Anyone experienced screen replacement? Did you send it back to supplier or you replaced it your self?
Should I get screen replacement with frame or just screen and I keep my frame?( Not a scratch on my frame). Any place you recommend to get new screen?
Should I use T7000 glue or is there something better?
Any advises to consider while fixing it?

My first question would be, have you ever done a screen replacement before? Because if you haven't then I'll recommend taking it to a reputable repair shop nearby considering you are not planning to buy another phone. Also just get the screen fixed no point in changing the frame as you said it's in good shape. But if you really wanna experience the bliss and accomplishment that is fixing your own device then always follow IFixIt guides and before opening it up or ordering parts read about your device's repairability. Also asking your friends and other people around you for a good repair shop would be a good idea.

regarding your first question, not for a mobile phone, because i know how to take care of my stuff, except this time (sigh). but of course i've done it for a laptop of my friend, and many many many electrical fixes. so do not worry about me doing it my self as it is my thing to do things my self.
regarding asking about the frame, i am asking this just to see if any one experienced replacing it without frame and how well was it sealed compared to pre and properly sealed. got my point?

Okay, this means that it'll be easy for you to repair your device, as for the frame I think you can buy a silicone seal as well and comes in a plastic case so it'll be easy to line it up, even If it doesn't you can buy sealing glue and do it yourself, it'll definitely be much cheaper than getting the whole frame. I do get your point now.

with frame it is just 35$ (AUD) more, around 20$ (USD). not much to save

My question now is that the MI 11U has an AMOLED display that is really good like HDR10+, 1Billion colors, Dolby vision and, 1700 nits peak brightness, where did you find a screen this inexpensive for $20 aud?

Oh okay, I thought it was weird, I hope you're able to fix your device and 20-35 would certainly be worth it if it did make the repair convenient for you.
