The Nexus 4 is very likely to be my next phone, replacing my old HTC Desire. Anyway, I have one big concern about the new Nexus.
I have had a LG Device once. It also had a silver-shiny bezel, just like the nexus 4. And exactly this bezel attracted scratches like a magnet. You could barely look at it without producing a scratch. It was kind of like the backside of the old iPod touches (if you know what I mean).
Sounds weird, but this is my biggest concern about the phone till yet. I don't want to have a phone which is scratched all over immediately...
Just my thoughts, anyway....
Seriously?
seriously.Probably sounds a bit crazy, but I have had a really worse experience with this. The mentioned older LG device with the metal bezel looked really awfull after few weeks of usage (and I really took care of where I put it etc.)....like it's been used for a few years already...

Seriously though don't those who have handled it say the outside is soft? It sounds like some sort of rubbery plastic not metal. Could be wrong.

don't think that'd work out for the front of the device...but even if, I'm not a fan of cases at all, why should I buy a many-hundreds-of-dollars/euros-device and than put it into a case for a few dollars/euros? My old phone survived my jeans also pretty well, the screen hasn't any spotable scratch - and it isn't even gorilla glass or anything comparable...
Perfect example of one of the many things duct-tape can fix.
I have no idea how easily the Nexus 4 will scratch. Guess we'll find out.
I don't think its metal, looks like plastic with chrome paint, but yes if metal it can get dings like the iPhone5.
I've also read that it's a rubbery feeling plastic which doesn't seem like it's scratch too easily.

platic with that chrome paint thing is even worse, it's just like butter. Metal is far better in that kind of stuff, the Desire's frame is some kind of painted metal, too. Got 2 noticable scratches in there, though, but that's not too bad for like 2 and a half years of daily usage with no case...

the bumper is slightly raised on the front and in the back to help protect. not guaranteed. i hate cases as well, however, i think i will be giving a bumper a try.
Yeah, I don't like the chrome ring either. My old Vibrant had it and it looked terrible after a couple of months. The paint started to chip and made the phone look really old. Plus it's kind of an outdated design cue. The N4 would have looked much more sleek without it.
Even in Google's promo shots the ring looks black, not silver. Looks much nicer, IMO.
You could always paint the silver ring black like many nexus 7 users have done

found that pretty interesting, too. Don't they like their own phone? On Googles pics, chrome thing is almost invisible, while on hands on shots you can clearly see it:

but you would have a deformed phone :cyclops:
I'm not a fan of the tacky fake chrome, but I'll probably just get a case/bumper for it anyway.
Wait to see how it is constructed, I normally just let my phones get scratched on their cases and then when come to selling just buy the parts and replace them, it's always as cheap as buying cases.
Bump for awareness. Someone please reply if you know about the quality/material/durability of the bezel. The strange thing is that they designed the bezel like that, to make sure the screen is safe, when put down. One would think that they made it out of a durable material/finish.
Edit: I'm quite sure that it's impossible to replace parts, when damaged. Since the battery door is sealed, I reckon you're f****d when you drop your phone and the bezel gets scratched up. This could be an issue to me, for sure.

It looks like the back cover is held on only with two screws. Standard screws not some proprietary kind. So in theory (without actually having a device to work with) it should be possible to easily replace the back cover assuming you found a new one. The back cover on this phone has all sorts of circuitry built into it so it might be quite difficult to find a new one.
It is also possible that the warranty sticker is on the bottom of that back cover, so when you take it off you rip off the warranty sticker. We will have to wait for a teardown to see if this is the case.
I've had a One for a few months but a couple of weeks ago I woke up to find it dead, after what I'd consider very minor liquid exposure (phone left in damp jeans overnight following drink spillage)
So, I have a new one arriving through my insurance claim but I'm now nervous that it seems pretty fragile after this experience - and critically, I can't make any more insurance claims this year if it breaks again as I claimed for a dead s3 this year also...
Am I right in thinking this isn't the hardiest phone out there? Should I sell up and go for the tougher Xperia? I just stick with my s3? It's not like the One does a huge amount the s3 couldn't.
Seriously undecided - thoughts?
I'm considering getting rid of my One for other reasons and one of the phones I'm considering is the Xperia Z. Just waiting for it to come out on T-Mob, AT&T, or Google Edition.
How is the Xperia "sturdier" It's full glass. The only way it's "sturdier" is that it can survive water..
I think it depends on what you're looking in your phone.
If you found that the One is perfect for you and the only thing that bothers you is its water resistant, so just take care of it a little bit more.
Else, if you know you can't keep it far from danger, you may take Xperia Z.

If it was left wrapped in damp material there is a very good chance this is what would happen to a lot of phones.
Not having a dig in any way, but you've claimed twice in a year which suggests you need to look after them a bit more.

Agreed, unless you had a waterproof phone then most phones would have become damaged its your own stupid fault, look after phones more. Good luck on claiming about the xperias back if you drop it and smash it.

You're saying that a full glass phone will take a beating better than an aluminum one? Sure, the One might have dinks if it's being bumped around, but chances are the Xperia will be totally shattered so.. I still don't see how you think glass is "stronger" in that sense than metal.

I'm referring to the screen.
Why would only worry about the screen? Both use glass. The Xperia is full glass all around and has a much worse screen. If you're as careless as you seem to be, ain't nothing gonna save you from destroying any phone unfortunately.

The One is very sturdy indeed, mine's survived a good few drops now, but the Z was tougher. The glass on the Z is bendy, Dragontail I believe, and the frame is a toughened material that's far stronger than the One.
For every other reason other than waterproof ability, I would choose the One.
The S3 is incredibly fragile. Two people I know have shattered their screens, one of them trice, purely from dropping them from around 1 foot high.

This is certainly true, so annoying. It's not a particularly grippy phone either - I dropped it twice in a year, both pretty minor but the screen cracked both times. I only claimed on insurance so I could sell it...
And thanks for the helpful response, much more useful than everyone who seems to know everything about how I care for my possessions.
Seems their is no specific comments around the One being particularly bad with minor liquid contact so I'll take that as a good sign, swayiing towards sticking with the one at the moment.
The xperia isn't sturdier at all, saying that all phones when naked are pretty weak, none of them will take a 6 foot fall in the right place, so with that in mind the only reason to move to the xperia is because you fear dropping it in water and or you plan to use it under water or around it.
For me the One is the best phone of the year for many reasons, you have to weigh up what suits you best.
Leaving your phone in wet anything is pretty stupid though, would you leave 500 quid in damp jeans? Your laptop in a wet environment? No, so don't do it with your phone.

Forgot to mention, liquid damage of any kind is a guessing game unless you plan to test each component, most of which the end user can't test anyway, I always assume the worst when it comes to liquid damage, that way i'm covered, plus thats what insurance is for.
If it's just a bit of water on the screen and nothing has seaped into the handset itself then you may be ok, but if it has gone into the handset then theres no telling what damage has been done.

I'm thinking of purchasing an HTC One, but I'm a little bit skeptical because of the durability of the camera lens. There have been many posts about the lens breaking due to temperature issues, and this is hindering me from buying the phone. To those who haven't experienced this issue, is it worth buying for, and are there any ways that could be done to prevent the lens on the HTC One to crack? Thanks.

I have used my phone in temperatures so hot it has shut itself off, twice, to the point where touching it hurts, and my camera lens is perfectly intact. I know a friend who uses his One pretty often for gaming and his gets hot too, and his has fallen over 10 times (the back housing looks terrible :crying and his camera lens has yet to see a single scratch (even I wonder how...). Point being, the camera lens is tough to break, ever since the One X. Don't ever take the word of the few 2 or 3, when the rest of the 2,000 or 3,000 are enjoying similar or even equal set ups :highfive:

I did, but it honestly seems as if that guy had it happen by accident.. I mean, even I have by mistake hit the wall or desk with my phone in my pocket and the phone was the one actually recieving the hit, not a ding or scratch and even less a crack.. I also put the phone with the screen facing inside and the back outside when in my pocket.

alright thanks for the reply. so i shouldn't worry about the camera lens being too fragile right? I don't want to spend $500 on a phone and have to pay for repairs for poor manufacturing on the camera.

Not really, those lenses are actually pretty tough to crack... I really can't imagine more than maybe hitting the corner of a table or a raised pointy object with the lense, maybe a fall with a tpu case since camera lenses are never covered... But outside of a hard/unplanned impact where the lens took all the force, I can't imagine a regular, everyday scenario where the camera lens would actually break by just using it... Heck, look up Poetic Atmosphere case on youtube, that case is HELL to get on and off... I feared cracking my screen and camera lens when taking it off cause I applied a lot of preassure, both glasses are still holding on strong

I think that buying an HTC device in general is a gamble. their QC is very bad. I had a desire which was amazing. then I bought a ONE X It's in repairs for a year now and nothing functioning with it. now I have the ONE for about a month now and guess what? I have dust on the inner part of my screen, the top bit of the digitizer is not working and have the known problem of the pink haze while taking pictures in low light.
for me, the camera lens is fine, you need to be careful about other stuff.

the color hue is normal in low light, stupidly normal if u ask me... dunno why it does it, but i dont like it still, it only happens on the most darkest of places with barely any light... dust in ur screen? thats why carriers replace One devices if they come with that screen bump issue or the gap issue is too serious, it's practically mandatory for them to replace the device if it has those manufacturer defects (already been talked about since the phone was released, btw). the digitizer area not working u may already know it's because of the dust. anyway, mine was one of the many One's that didn't have any screen gap or bump, so no dust in mine
to be brutally honest, buy the damn phone. its a beast, and until you encounter a problem, dont worry about it. Ive had mine naked for 3 months, and no scratches, dings, dents, build issues, nothing. dont let a bad apple ruin the bunch.

HTC have sold over 5 million of these units... people without problems do not report that they do not have problems, it's only those that do which make up a very tiny percentage
Just my $0.02 for what it's worth.... I traded an SGS4 locally for my HTC One and I only had it 3 days when I broke the LCD. Mind you, I had an Incipio Feather case on it (which does nothing for shock and more to prevent scratches). Here's the weird part, I dropped it literally 6-10" at most on to a ceramic tile floor. The display did NOT shatter upon impact. I picked it up, examined it... Everything looked fine and then I sat it down on a marble countertop and right there before my very eyes I watched the LCD glass spiderweb as I heard the creaking sounds of the glass cracking. It was the MOST bizarre experience. A) I've never broken a display before and B) I typically take VERY good care of my devices since I usually buy off contract every 6 months or so. I sent it in to an authorized HTC repair center, paid $180 and they fixed my device flawlessly. My One is still in MINT condition. I think as long as you take care of your device you won't have a problem with the camera lense. Taking into consideration that thread you pointed out I'm surprised my cam lense didn't break too. But, it didn't. I was very pleased with HTC's efficiency at repairing my device but was worried they wouldn't reassemble it well. My worries were not justified. Take it for what it's worth to you.

Hi everybody!
The past 3 months, i've been the proud owner of an HTC one, but something has been bothering me for some time now: even though i am very careful with my phone and keep the case on it at all times, the back has accumulated quite a lot of small 'craters'. These only seem to appear where the back should be protected by the hard part of my official htc one double dip flip case. I have checked time and time again if there was any sand in between, and there never was any, nor was there anything else in there.
I will try to post a decent picture later on, but i was wondering: what should i do? Do i have any chance to get a new device?

You should use a TPU case. I got myself the Cimo one. It's flexible and offer all around protection, except for the speaker grills. Just clean it inside as a precaution before putting your phone in there. Your flip case obviously got some debris inside which pressed against the soft aluminium back of the phone when you closed it and put it in your pocket or bag.

I just did that last night. The OtterBox Commuter has the best protection v/s slimness.I got myself the black one. I really wanted the Glacier model but the colors in reality do not match what you see in the rendered pictures. The light grey is actually absolutely white and the darker grey is actually light grey. I don't want a white case as my phone is black for a reason - no worries about dust, etc making it look dirty.

Avoid the case, it's crap. I've got the double dip too which has been fine although some people have said that it also has scratched their One, so take care with it.
A silicon case is obviously the safest choice but then again it's not going to be the prettiest either.
I've actually not got anything on mine at all now, I love the aesthetics of the phone and putting a case on it is just going to spoil that.
Have never dropped it yet (touch wood) and if I ever break it then i'll just get another one anyway so not really bothered too much.
PS: The urban cases are pretty good, you should check them out if youre looking for something rugged and decent looking.

Has anyone been able to track down somewhere that is selling a replacement back for the Mix? Mine is scratched quite heavily (likely from using a fairly tight sleeve) and I would really like to replace it....Or for any poor soul out there who has damaged their Mix and would like to sell the back. The irony is the sides of the phone are pristine and not a scratch, not so much on the back.
Thanks in advance

You are wrong. It is made in China.Enough said.Looks good but who cares about quailty. It is NOT CERAMIC but made to looks like it.
I had it and my suggestion is save money for Galaxy S8+ or something more valuable.
I had to take the pictures with my Galaxy tablet so not the best quality but you get the picture. This is with normal day to day use as well, nothing extreme. I even had the Best Buy film on the back for a few months but got tired of the sharp edges from the film every time i unlocked with the finger print sensor. I am wondering if the chemicals from the glue combined with peeling of the film stripped some of the finish somehow as this is supposed to be so scratch resistant. Maybe just one with a faulty finish.

So the YouTube video is fake or is it your phone, it's been tested against scratches with a hardness of 7, second to none, don't get it. Not one other person complaining I dropped mine when it slipped off a table on it's own while i was in another room,, expecting the worse but not even a mark.

Sorry, I am not sure what your point is. I am certainly not making it up as per the pictures. I was only asking if anyone had seen the replacement backs anywhere. I absolutely love his phone but have been disappointed how much is has scratched on the back, not questioning the online videos etc.
By the way, what was the purpose of your post? If you have nothing to contribute to solving the question at hand why say anything?

Suppose my point was because of shortage of the ceramic maybe they sent some out with different materials.
Mine is just fine after a while of use, both in and out of a protective case, side note mine also doesn't have the "cottage" cheese looking blemishes yours seems to have in the pictures. Its possible to have received a "repaired" one instead of a legit one ... especially if it came from a reseller. There are mentions of this on the xiaomi reddit and other places. its extremely scratch resistant, as much so as any Samsung or other device out there that I have dealt with [and I do service work on phones so I have seen plenty of damaged devices - HUGE number of sub standard Samsung's btw - for the value guy ]
Good luck on finding a part supplier, you MAY find one on Aliexpress ... but there more than likely not going to be genuine parts. Vopmart.com
Thanks to everyone for their feedback. I hope I didnt get a refurb etc, that would suck.

It's not the point of this discussion but I also have tiny scratches beside the lenses and fingerprint...
It's not unscratchable...
Nothing is unscratchable :_)
