[Q] AMOLED Screen on N6? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On every specs sheet, there's no mention of the AMOLED screen. But on Google's own video, it mentions the 5.96' AMOLED screen. Can anyone confirm this?

Why on earth would you be getting your information from anywhere other than straight from the source? It's Google's phone. I'm pretty sure they would have the specs sheet correct.

Motorola's spec sheet shows AMOLED display.

lol not sure why you are getting your info from anywhere BUT moto and google...

Is AMOLED burn in still an issue nowdays?

no

It will indeed have an AMOLED display. Screen burn in is something that I have personally experienced and it sucks. A few weeks ago, I went into a T-Mobile store and saw some LG phones on display. One of them, I believe it was the Flex, had the biggest burn in I've ever seen. A widget had literally burned in the screen and covered almost half of the display. It was noticeable everywhere on the phone, except on really dark images. I'm hoping this phone doesn't have this issue.
Any previous Moto X owners run into this issue?

My biggest concern is readability in direct sunlight. Should I be worried?

Ran into that issue on my galaxy nexus. Moto x 2013 no issues

I was responding to the screen burn in issue. I don't have issues reading in the sun with moto x 2013 but that probably isn't going to help with knowing for the nexus 6.

I imagine it would be the same type of AMOLED screen though.

I was looking to get a Note 4 for the AMOLED Screen, now I don't have to! This is good news for me.

Problem being, i'm guessing Nexus 6 is using older type of Amoled variants, it will be quite a bit worse then the current Note 4 Amoled, which is the only Amoled screen which i count as competitive (and yet not in the same league) with IPS.

I think it will be fairly good considering the price tag on the device or so I can hope. I had a note 3 and the display was pretty good for a AMOLED so I wonder how it will be.

IMHO Samsung will keep the best Amoleds for them, and they will use the bellow average S4/Note 3 versions (sorry but for me it was bad)

Noone will put a 4k display to 5" phone, thats plain stupid so this one you may drop.
Snapdragon 800 will be more likely used in tablets, so i also dont expect it to be in next Nexus device , it will most probably will be SD600 like in other top models this year.
Ill bet for 1080P , 5" screen (which is also useless in phone, but everyone got it so Google will also). 2GB of ram (who needs more in a phone?)
No sdcard slot, no removable battery - standard in google phones.
the most major change will be the OS, KLP will most probably be pushed to phones after I/O.

4k refers to video its called ultra hd.wow . also....it seems(could of course be wrong) like you dissing or dissmising nexuses?! First are you forgeting price??!! Way below norm.people are and will eventually flock once out of a contract fir a 249$ phone. Second nexus strives now(not the gnex albeit a good phone) to be the top o line device. My lgog which is the n4 brother destroyed the Samsung Galaxy s3 in the way many ways including speed. The lgog is the top scorer stock on quadrant. Yes i know its not everyday use im just making a point. I have contacts at lg(a cousin who is a dev) and all these specs are being seriously considered.(blueprint will be at fed communication soon) and the almost for sure one is the snapdragon 800. So your guess is flawed. Sorry

the wallpaper may be partly to blame for that .. if you skip into the video to the websites the colours are very similar ... i will say the Nexus 5 screen looks slightly washed out .. but imo its a really nice display , super sharp and im much happier with these colours than the N4 ones.

Ya...looking at video *in* a video to deduce clarity and accuracy is ridiculous. Put them next to each other for yourself at the same brightness levels if you want to have a valid critique.
I've put it next to the Galaxy S4, iPhone 5S, and HTC One and played the same exact video file using the same application (with the exception of the iPhone, since it cannot run MX Player), and the screen on the Nexus was arguably the best of the bunch. Coworkers of mine agreed with that assessment.
You held it? Did you do an actual test? Did you make sure both had the same content on the screen? Did you verify all reference levels?
I'm actually baffled why iPhone users constantly find the need to compare their screens to other devices. The screens aren't even in the same category anymore. Most Android phones are much larger than 4 inches these days.

Blows it out the water? really ? I dont agree, but you are entitled to your opinion
This is really interesting, as it goes against a lot of what we've seen in leaks and early benchmarks. Since I'm about to receive my Nexus 5 in the next few hours I'm not complaining, obviously, but I'm just wondering if there's anything off about the test.
Could the fact that the Nexus 5 was brand new and just booted give it some sort of advantage over the iPhone 5s that, I'm assuming, has been used, loaded with apps, etc?
Bottom line I'm really happy about these results, finally shows off how silly and biased benchmarks are in comparison to real life usage. Also kudos to Apple for managing to create a dual core CPU that runs almost as fast as a quad core one. I wonder how it would have preformed had it been a quad core as well..

Funny I always hear similar terms used to describe apple products without any meaning.
I can see why you would think a 1080p 5" screen is blown out of the water by a 600p 4" screen.

Disappointment list

I got Nexus 5 today, played with it for sometime and here what I noticed I don't like about it.
I also have Galaxy S4 GE and used S3, S2 before. Never used Nexus phones before.
1. It doesn't come with headphones. oh cmon, how expensive can the cost be to not include them into a package ???
2. IPS display is a very big disappointment. The colors are washed out. Whites are too bright.
Galaxy S4 GE's display is much more better at color accuracy if I compare it to a professional IPS displays from NEC.
3. Screen size is actually smaller due to a presence of google buttons. Galaxy S4 has a bigger usefull surface, because it uses mechanical buttons.
Everything else is cool. KitKat 4.4 is awesome.

Why do people care about the ****ty ear buds that come with these phones ?

1) it's a $350 phone. If you want, ask google to throw one in if you pay $650.
2) that's how a phone screen is supposed to lppl. You're used to the constant doctoring and over saturation. Which isn't a good representation of what it really is.
3) those mechanical buttons still take up space? It's not that hard to enter full screen mode and they're gone. not to mention you're in the development community where you can easily remove the nav bar completely.

As for music, I don't really listen it on a mobile device since the quality of its DAC is extremely inferior to studio devices.

1. Seriously, they cost like $10 on amazon. And it's soo much hassle to order them separately.
2. Just get a professional IPS monitor and compare colors of Galaxy S4 and Nexus 5 screens. You will see that Nexus 5 is off by a lot.
3. The height of Galaxy S4 and Nexus 5 is the same. Not all applications support a full screen mode yet, for example whatsapp or gallery.

If the screen is truly washed out, you'll be able to tell by looking at this website:

Does Google have something against rounded numbers?

While just browsing the web looking for new random leaks on the Nexus 6, I noticed that pretty much NO nexus device has a rounded to the nearest whole number display. Even the newest Nexus device is 5.96".
Anyone know why google does this? Is it easier to make a 5.96" than a 6"? Cheaper? I wouldn't think by much. Its just weird is all.

for one, i think it's odd to be looking around for new "leaks", when we basically know just about everything about the phone so far, aside from a couple details.
As for display size... not sure anybody knows.... and neither Google, nor their manufacturing partners, are the only ones doing it. iPhone 6 and 6+ are 4.7 and 5.5" respectively. The Note 4 is 5.7. The Moto X went from 4.7" last year to 5.2" this year.
If i had to guess.... it's simply because companies want to have a broader range of screen sizes. I'm sure they could have rounded up, even wording wise, with the Nexus 6, since it's so godawful close to 6"... but wording can also cast an impression on how people feel about the size of a device.

Yeah its probably to keep the aspect ratio 16:9, and some of the screen is hidden under the bezels. Also maybe its to do with the screens manufacturing?
just a naming convention
i bet if they used the naming convention u are talking of, someone else would complain, it doesn't really change the product those small digits. there is really no need for a physical leak of the device since the specs are now widely known. i think these days they leak this information intentionally (another conspiracy theory i guess) . . .. . . . to ram up sales (basic economics) coz it kinda creates some hype . . . .. . ..
For the16:9 aspect ratio.
And calling it the Nexus 5.96 would be rather dumb.

Definitely. It's a beast, runs 7.0 like a champ. My Nexus 6 is 1.5 years old and still has no problems getting 2 days on battery.

I understand. The only reason I would change my N6 to a Moto x is portability.
The N6 is a great phone but it's rather large and the back is not flat.
An advantage for you could be that the N6 is planned to get Android 7.
I don't know if the Moto X will be updated.

My N6 is 21 months old.
Out of the box the battery wasn't that powerful.
Battery life less than 1 day. Cause: amoled display.
For a better battery life I had to make changes:
1. root access to allow RRO-layers with dark themes.
2. Alternative apps with dark theme (f.i. no Gmail but Aquamail)
3. A custom kernel (Franco's kernel)
4. Debloating/delete not used apps.

Currtenly using the moto x pure. A friend offered to trade me his nexus 6. Would that be a righteous trade or should I just keep moto x pure? Both are 32gb model.

As someone who has both devices in house (roommate has the Moto X Pure), it was a tough decision. However, I went with the N6, because of the screen @NLBeev loves so much as well as the camera. For you, the question may not be the LCD, so what is most important to you?
Processor? 32-bit quad-core 805 vs 64-bit hexa-core 808.
Camera? 13MP with OIS vs 21MP w/out it. (For me, the OIS was more important than sheer megapixels.)
Screen? 5.96" AMOLED vs 5.7" TFT LCD. Both have the same resolution of 2560x1440, which means NLBeev won't like either of them.
Expandable storage? Moto X Pure has it. Nexus 6 does not.
Have all the current updates at timely matter. ROM options battery life performance. The moto x battery isn't that great and I'm dirty unicorn ROM.

Then you already know what you should do. Trade for the Nexus, as the timely updates is one area Motorola fails at. The Pure hasn't even been upgraded to 6.0.1 from 6.0. Just keep in mind that cloud storage is your friend with a 32GB Nexus.

The 805 is actually a better chip than the 808, despite the model number being the wrong way.
The 805 has 4 VERY STRONG (and cool running) 32bit cores.
The 808 has 2 "OK" 64bit cores + 4 "REALLY CHITTY" 64bit cores. All VERY HOT running. They do NOT all add up to 4 strong 32bit cores.
"butbutbut SIXTYFOUR BITZ!!!". And what, precisely, do you use a phone for that benefits from 64bit CPU? Are you software transcoding videos? Nope. That's all done in dedicated hardware blocks.

Sheer megapixels is meaningless once you pass the point where they're bleeding into each other (which we are WAY beyond).

The AMOLED will use a lot less power,
The TFT will **LOOK BETTER**, since it uses backlight+filter and doesn't LIE about its resolution (The Nexus 6 is really only 2560x720).
Expandable storage? Moto X Pure has it. Nexus 6 does not.

I admit.....displaying pictures is great ?
@doitright: And you felt it necessary to dissect my post because? *shakes my head*
1. Have you ever heard of these things called "examples"? They're really refreshing things as they serve to illustrate concepts that the average person might misunderstand. The questions are all examples pointing back to the most important question: what is most important to you? As noted in reply to the OP, not everyone is going to focus on the display or the camera. The OP got it, because in his response he didn't touch on anything physical whatsoever. He instead focused on the biggest benefit of the Nexus/Pixel line: timely updates.
2. Seriously, you are preaching to the wrong person. The OP would benefit from the additional information you provided, however you chose to quote me, meaning you addressed me. Address him, because I have the device I want.
Okay so I did the trade got the phone plus $50 and a case lol not a bad deal I'd say. And it's running 7.0

1) Examples are worthless if they are incorrect.
2) This isn't your thread, read the name on the first post and you will know who this thread is for.
