[Q] Some Questions About Different Moto X Models

Hey all,
I'm looking at purchasing a Moto X (possibly two, if my wife replaces her iPhone...). I'm currently not tied to any particular carrier, but I'd like to keep my options as open as possible. I'm going to buy the phone/s at full price, and then bring them to whatever carrier/service/MVNO I end up with.
From what I understand so far, there are two basic models of the Moto X -- one for Verizon (CDMA), and one for GSM-based networks.
Here's my basic question: What's the difference between these phones??
The Verizon website lists the Moto X as a 'global' phone, which implies that it has a GSM radio in it, right?
If so, does that imply that the 'Tmobile' (or otherwise GSM-based) Moto X has a CDMA radio?
Then, as if I'm not confused enough, I find the 'Developer' edition of the Moto X... in two versions -- one for Verizon, and the other for 'GSM'. The developer edition provides an unlockable bootloader... cool, I'm a fan of that! But!! Isn't the Moto X part of the Motorola Bootloader Unlock program? It is (hxxps://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/87215)... so what's the difference between the 'Developer' edition, and the regular edition?
I'm sorry if these are silly questions -- but I've spent at least an hour Googling today, and didn't find any answers that I found conclusive. Thanks for any help you can give!!

Unless you absolutely have to have VZW for the service - do not buy the VZW model. I am on VZW and have the Dev Edition from them. VZW is always the last to get updates.
So there is just a lot going on with this phone...
There are two different Developer Editions. GSM (for AT&T and T-mobile?). I know it is for ATT and believe it is also for T-mobile. But the T-mobile Consumer Edition also has an unlockable bootloader without buying the developer edition?
Even though the MotoX is listed on Motorola's Bootloader unlock program - it is only certain models. Sprint, T-mobile, US Cellular. Verizon's is only the Developer Edition. ATT would only be the GSM Developer Edition.
My recommendation is T-mobile if you get good service from them. They are going to get updates first.
Also as far as CDMA Vs. GSM; Verizon and Sprint use CDMA technology and ATT and Tmobile and most others use GSM technology.
I know that sounded like a big mess - sorry. I am tired and its all I got for now.

The CDMA version has gsm capabilities, but the gsm version will not work on CDMA.
If I were in your position, I'd get the gsm developer edition or the T-Mobile version. Either of those should be compatible with most carriers unless you absolutely need a Verizon phone. If so get the VZW developer edition.

That would be my choice, as well. However, I'm not 100% sure I want to commit to T-Mobile, yet... their coverage seems to be the most lacking of non-Verizon carriers. I was actually thinking of activating the phone on Ting (a Spring MVNO) to begin with.

So what you're saying is that the VZW Dev edition would theoretically work on other CDMA carriers (i.e. Sprint/Sprint-based networks), and also GSM-based networks (i.e. T-Mobile), right? But that the T-Mobile version with only work on GSM carriers (i.e. not Verizon, and not Sprint)?
As much as I'd love to just commit to T-Mobile's GSM network... their coverage maps have me hesitant, heh.

With T-Mobile you don't commit, other than the cost of the phone which can be resold. They don't do contracts so you can easily switch to another carrier if needed. I've been on Verizon since their inception and I now have à T-Mobile "test" line which is working pretty well. As mentioned above, it's probably best to get the GSM dev edition since it can be used on AT&T too.

I'm nearly certain the T-Mobile version works 100% on AT&T HSPA & LTE.
I ordered one last night, so I will clear that up when it arrives next week, but I'm pretty certain I've already seen others reporting that T-Mobile works fully on AT&T and is unlocked out of the box.

Gotcha. Ideally, though, I'd like a phone that would work on CDMA AND/OR GSM networks... would the VZW and/or VZW Dev Edition be capable of that? That is, could I activate on a Sprint-based CDMA network like Ting, and then switch to a GSM-based network like T-Mobile later, if I wanted?

Awesome! Looking foward to what you find out.

I think you need a Sprint version to be able to use Ting. Last I heard, they don't flash Verizon phones to their network. I'm not sure if the Sprint version can be unlocked to be used on T-Mobile if you change your mind later. I'd highly advise just picking your carrier first before picking your phone.

Was starting to think that myself, heh. Just kind of a bummer, because I know I want the phone -- but I don't know which carrier will end up fitting me best.

Any difference between T-Mobile and Dev Ed.??

Are there any differences between the Tmo and Dev Ed?
Will the Tmo work on AT&T's nework and get LTE?
If there is no difference I'd be tempted to go with Tmo's so I could motomaker mine.

No difference, same model. I'm using t-mobile motomaker on at&t with LTE just fine. Just don't let them change the IMEI on their system if you get a new sim card. Tell them to leave whatever was on there, or you'll get a plan without LTE. This applies to dev edition as well.

There are many discussions and many answers to this question. The answer I saw the most was to get a T-Mobile version for use on T-Mobile. The reason is the T-Mobile version supports a particular band for HPSA+ that other versions don't support. If your not in an LTE area, you will fall back to EDGE if your phone does not support the HSPA band needed. I can't confirm, only passing on what I read. I bought the T-Mobile version.
It appears as if you intend to use it on AT&T so it might make no difference. Why can't you use Motomaker on AT&T? Have they discontinued it?

Thanks. Understood that your not confirming but reporting what you've observed. The reason why I would choose T-Mobile and use on AT&T is simply because I want the freedom and flexibility to move between different GSM carriers and their MVNOs just like I am able to do on my Nexus 4.
If the T-Mobile version works on a particular HSPA+ band that the Dev Ed does not, yet has all the other bands that the Dev Ed has, then that would make the T-Mobile phones a better and more flexible phone imo. People who need to root or unlock would feel differently since they have different priorities.
I really want to be able to use T-Mobile since they have the best monthly pricing (especially a family of four) and I love how they have shaken up the market, but T-Mobile indoor building penetration is so poor at my current residence that I really need to go with Straight Talk or Net10 with an AT&T sim, yet if I move or the coverage improves I would switch to T-Mobile.
Does T-Mobile have to giver you a code to get your phone to work on AT&T and its MVNO's?

Does the t-mobile Moto X allow you to tether on AT&T without restriction?

I'm planning on ordering up a MotoX here shortly and have been wondering about the DE vs Tmo question too. After a LOT of google searches it seems they are the same phone with the Tmo version supporting extra bands. According to this article there is NO carrier branding or bloatware on the the Tmo version. The article also states that the Tmo Moto X comes sim unlocked with an unlockable bootloader via Motorola's unlock program. Given this, I cant understand why anyone would order the DE and not take advantage of the Motomaker customization.

There is NO difference at all. Same bands, same internals, same everything. The DE is more expensive because it's the 32GB model. The tmo one IS sim unlocked (some people don't believe that), and has an unlockable bootloader. Doesn't have a carrier logo stamped on the back either.

As for T-Mobile USA vs Dev edition.. From what I know, they support the same bands and both are SIM Unlocked. While both allow you to unlock their boot loader, doing so on the T-Mobile USA device will void its warranty where as unlocking the boot loader on the Dev Edition does not. That is why some would order the Dev Edition rather than a 32gig T-Mobile version.
As for T-Mobile vs ATT versions...

later in that discussion, someone else says... "the T-mobile and Dev variants have the same LTE bands (B17/B4/B2), so they'll be equal. On AT&T (in the US), they'll both do just as well as the AT&T variant. Bands 5 and 7 aren't used by these operators in the US." So not having LTE Band 5 & 7 on the T-Mobile US X wont be a factor unless you are traveling to a non-USA country that uses Band 5 or 7 for LTE.
The T-Mobile can unlock the boot loader, where as the ATT variant can't.

I have almost the same question. I found an article to root the moto G and the moto X (http://www.elandroidelibre.com/2013...buffer&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Buffer) (sorry it's in spanish)...bla bla bla I found the same that I found here but when I read the comments someone logged as "el mostro cortes" said that he flashed the developer edition's GSM factory image to his motoX. That make me think if I can do the same.
I found the radio specs of my carrier here in Colombia:
TIGO
GSM: 1900MHz
UMTS/HSDPA: 1900MHz
After that I look the motoX DEV-E GSM radio specs and find:
Networks:
GSM/GPRS/EDGE - UMTS/HSPA + up to 42 Mbps - 4G LTE
2G/2.5G GSM/GPRS/EDGE bands
850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G UMTS bands:
850/900/ AWS/1900/2100 MHz with HSPA+ up to 42 Mbps (B5/B8/B4/B2/B1)
4G LTE bands:
700/AWS/1900MHz (B17/B4/B2)
With this info, can some help me and tell me if can i flash the motoX DEV-E GSM to my phone?
I search in wikipedia and I found that the motoX DEV-E GSM is a X1053 model, and my motoX is a X1058, it's still posible?

It can make your head spin, but from the thread it appears T-Mobile X and Dev Ed X are the same, but AT&T X has them beat with LTE Bands 5 & 7, but that's moot in US since 5 & 7 are used outside US.

I should add, from what I've gleaned from what people are reporting in this thread, is that the
1) T-Mobile X and Dev Ed X, have an HSPA+ band that the AT&T X does not.
2) Therefore, in the US, the T-Mobile X and Dev Ed X are fully functional on AT&T's network.
3) But AT&T's X will be lacking some HSPA+ capabilities on T-Mobile's network.
Again, I'm not confirming or asserting any of this as fact, but only trying to summarize as best I can what we have been discussing.

I contacted Motorola today, to verify that the t-mobile off-contract version indeed was sim-unlocked, but they replied that it WAS sim-locked, and also was carrying the t-mobile logo on the back.
I think it's really hard to figure out who to believe, since many are reporting that it comes sim-unlocked, but wouldn't Motorola be the one to know for sure?

If you gain any further insight into this between now and Monday please do report back to this thread. I have zero knowledge one way or the other, but this is the first I've heard that there is any branding on T-Mobile X.

I bought a t-mobile motomaker moto x. Mine arrived the 21st. For a FACT it is unbranded and sim-unlocked. Using on AT&T. The phone has nothing to do with T-mobile other than it came with a T-mobile sim card.
edit: as you can see the phone has no branding.

What I'm wondering is why on earth Motorola would give me such informations then. Is it a secret that it comes unlocked? Nevertheless this is profe enough for me. Awesome.

Yes. I'm sure. As another use posted above me, the device has NO tmobile logos, and is Sim UNLOCKED. I've put an ATT sim inside and it works fine. Moto chat is useless, they don't know anything about their own products. Get the motomaker tmobile version unless you don't care about colors. Then get the dev edition because unlocking the bootloader doesn't void the warranty on that one.
Tmobile doesn't really sell this phone, moto does. Tmobile didn't touch it at all, it's the developer edition with 16gb of storage and without the "Developer Edition" engraving.

I'm looking to get a non contract moto X but am confused by all the versions. For instance, Republic sells it for $299.

Republic wireless phone only works with republic wireless.
Start with your carrier then go from there. If GSM and you NEED root i suggest t-mobile or dev edition so u can unlock bootloader and always guarantee root.

What carrier are you on? As the other guy said, if you have a GSM carrier (AT&T, tmobile, other mvno's of those carriers), then go with the tmobile version. You CAN unlock the bootloader and root it, and it comes sim unlocked so you can use it on att/whatever other gsm carrier you want. If you have verizon, then get the CDMA dev edition.

I want it as a non contract phone. Currently I'm on straighttalk and they have a system where you buy a sim from them. But I may go elsewhere. I'm debating between a moto X or a nexus 5.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm repeating questions, but I'm not from the US.
So I'm not too familiar with mobile phones being locked and sim locked and things like these.
My question is, I'm thinking of bringing a Moto X into Singapore for my daily use.
Just wondering, according to all the above comments, I should bring in a T-Mobile version instead since sim and bootloader is not locked to any carrier?
And I got one more question

The radios all differ slightly. And yes, you should get the tmobile one since it's sim unlocked. I don't know the bands of your carrier, so you might have to look it up and compare it with the US bands.

Ok just checked. Seems like only 3G will work in Singapore. LTE here is band 3 and 7. whereas T-mobile seems to be just on band 4.

Can I use it directly without any activation or unlocking?

GSM DEV ED is working factory unlocked out of the box as is the T mobile version. No activation needed or required. VZW edition is for those on their network not wanting to void warranty by unlocking bootloader.

It's my understanding that an unlocked moto-x will work on either CDMA or GSM networks depending on the sim that is put in the phone. There is apparently no hardware difference in the various phones other than 16gb or 32gb. The differences are in the preloading and locking of carrier stuff...and the warranty for developer edition not being voided by unlocking it.

All verizon LTE phones are sim un-locked now (FCC requires this as part of the licensing deal for the 700MHz spectrum). I just returned from a week in Europe with my Verizon Moto X (non-DE). When I landed in Italy, it took about 10 minutes before the phone picked up a local carrier and then everything worked great. In Italy I was roaming on Vodafone, and in Switzerland I was roaming on Swisscom. Data worked great in both places. I didn't try using a local SIM card, but I'm sure there are plenty that would work.

XT1254 in Europe

Hey,
I'm planning on getting an XT1254 Turbo. I'm coming from a Moto X 2014. Reasons are mostly battery life.
I've only found the XT1254 and XT1250 that are still selling online. I would prefer to get the .54 as I'd like the extra storage. As far as I read over here, the XT1254 is the Verizon version, XT1250 the Verizon Unlocked GSM version, and then there's the XT1225 that's the International version Moto Maxx/Moto Droid Turbo.
There are absolutely no more XT1225 online to buy as far as I searched, so I'm kinda set with the XT1254 which would be the Verizon version.
My carrier is Vodafone, in Europe.
Would I encounter any particular problems as far as carrier compatibility, GSM/LTE bands and such? Will it work on LTE on either of the available bands?
Would I be better off using the XT1250?

XT1254 = XT1250. They have identical hardware. The only difference is software. The XT1250 is not a Verizon phone.
XT1254: Officially locked bootloader (unlockable via Sunshine for a fee), unlocked SIM, CDMA and GSM capable.
XT1250: Officially unlockable bootloader, unlocked SIM, CDMA and GSM capable.
As for band compatibility, your best bet would be to look up the bands your carrier uses and the bands that the phone you're considering is capable of receiving. However, just for some anecdotal evidence, I took my XT1254 to Germany, Sweden and Czechia using a German SIM card that I bought, and the phone worked perfectly in all of those places.

Also for the op...
The XT1254 and XT1250 bands are the same. I've posted them many times. LTE bands 2,3,4,7,13. Plus some HSPA (not as many as the XT1225), and CDMA.
XT1250 is 32GB only.
XT1254 is 32GB and some 64GB.
XT1225 is 64GB only.
If you're getting the XT1254 for additional storage, double check it's a 64GB model. Most are not.

On a side note, does anyone know any other way of getting an XT1225 apart from ebay/amazon? I've also tried google searches; ended up on other selling platform sites but still nothing. Not even in used state.

Also, if it helps, I have a 64 GB XT1254. On the phone it says model: XT1254, type: M0DFE. That type number might help you distinguish between the 32 and 64GB models, but I don't know that for sure.

Just out of curiosity, why are you set on the Turbo/Maxx? There are plenty of better options out there.

Found an XT1254 in great condition but the seller states it's carrier locked in Verizon. There's no way past that and make it work in Europe with other carriers, right?

He's wrong. No Verizon postpaid LTE phones have been carrier locked since 2012 FCC agreement.
I can show you YouTube videos and an XDA thread from November 2014 (just after release) showing Droid Turbo running on AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. The Droid Turbo is not and has never been carrier locked.
No Verizon postpaid LTE phones are carrier locked (since 2012), or Verizon would have to pay hefty fines.
There's a lot of ignorance about carrier locked and bootloader lock. Many people don't know the difference. Plus Verizon infamously used to carrier lock their contract/postpaid phones (but haven't for about 5 years).
And yes, if you search the internet you will find a lot of those ignorant comments. Even here on XDA we had to educate people.

Well, he doesn't seem sure if it's locked or not. I asked him to head over to Verizon and see if it's locked and, if that's the case, to tell me the unlock-fee. He just said that he's not familiar with the process and that he won't do it. As for me, I probably won't be able to do anything with the unlocking process since I'm in Europe. He's in the US.
I'm committed to buying it but If all fails and it's indeed locked, are my hands tied or am I able to do something from my end when it arrives?

I know that post talks about AT&T a lot, but the point is the Droid Turbo has NEVER been carrier locked. But a lot of people think Verizon still does that. They're not allowed to, as a specific condition for having access to more LTE spectrum.

I didn't even think it was possible, so it didn't cross my mind to search for it. My bad!

There is no such thing as a carrier locked XT1254. Verizon is legally required to keep them carrier unlocked per an agreement they have with the FCC, and I'm pretty sure that asshole who runs the FCC hasn't gotten around to dismantling that requirement yet.

This was why I bought my third XT1225 new in the box back in early 2016 -- as a backup phone, just so something like this wouldn't happen. I bought it while there was still a little supply available on eBay.
My wife and I have the other two as daily phones.
That third phone still new in the box. Whenever I decide to sell it, someone will be very lucky.

Yeah I realized I woke up too late to get a .25 or even .54s that are new in the box. Got the 2014 X back in 2015...time flew fast.
I would I'm planning on getting a 2nd one at some point soon...and the xt1225 would be better Promise I'd take care of it as if it was my baby.

Updating
1st XT1254 arrived yesterday with 5.1 official. Will probably settle in a few days, then take the OTA to MM since I heard there are some battery improvements there too so it won't hurt. Soon after I'll Sunshine it and move on to cr most probably.
Factory reset it and popped in my Vodafone SIM from my Moto X2 and after a few seconds I got 4G without any settings changes on my end. 'Global' was already set by default so that was probably why it worked straight away.
Googled beforehand that Vodafone uses Band 3 and 20 here. Out of the ones that the XT1254 supports, only Band 3 is a match. So far I can't seem to notice any drawbacks from having only one out of two available 4G Bands, so all's good.
I ordered a 2nd XT1254 soon after the first one as I found even a better price and at 64GB instead of 32GB. This one will arrive this Tuesday and I'm optimistic it will be smooth sailing regarding Carrier/4G compatibility like with the 1st Droid.
Just out of curiosity I went into SIM Status to check the signal strength and compare it to my Moto X2 which has an amazing coverage. They're both sitting at -96.
So for anyone having doubts about Verizon Droid Turbo XT1254 working to its fullest in Europe or anywhere else besides The U.S, just check your Carrier's supported 3G/4G bands and see if you have any match.
Any SIM card other than Verizon will work just as well as with a Verizon one. Only thing that you'll get is a notification every time you reboot the phone stating that the inserted SIM is not from Verizon. Dismiss and get going.
One other thing you'll want to check if you have issues calling someone is to head over in to the Dialer Settings and search for that one thing that will add prefix to the phone number (I forgot its name, but you'll find it easily). Even if you set the correct country you're in, you still might have issues calling. Just disable it so that it won't add any prefixes and you're good to go.

You'll like 64GB much better. Besides extra storage, all the 64GB Quarks have ballistic nylon + kevlar underneath, not just the kevlar backing.
I'm pretty sure installing custom ROM will take care of the Verizon annoyance SIM card notification.
