[Q] How to activate new SIM/line to T-Mobile Family Plan? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First, I'm new to pre orders and family plans with T-mobile, and will appreciate any help I can get here.
Here's what's going on. Late September we opened a 4 line family plan, 3 phones were pre ordered, 1 phone bought new at the tmobile store. We were given all 4 SIM cards, but only 1 is activated on the in-store bought phone, when I log into mytmobile site, it shows that we only have 1 phone# / line, which should be normal I think since we only got 1 phone activated with them for now and waiting for the pre ordered phones to arrive.
Now, one of the new phones (Samsung Note 4) will arrive by mail this Thursday, my question is how do I activate the new sim and phone? I heard phones ship with SIM card in the package? If so, which sim do I use? The one in package with new phone or the one I got in store? I know I can't activate it online, I tested it out and right now it only allows me to update and replace the one current sim to a new one, but that's not what I want, I want to ADD new sim/line to the account since this is a family plan. Do I have to take my new phone and sim to a tmobile store to activate or spend a long *** time on the phone with customer service just to activate a sim to our account? What are the steps after I receive the pre ordered phone? BTW the phones are bought on the installment plan.
Sorry if this seems like a simple matter, but again I'm new to all this.

I believe that you just put the sim in and they can do everything over the phone

My phone came with the new sim and all I did was pop it in and made a call. In your box It gives you a number to call to activate, but all I did was make a call from the phone and my sim was already activated for some reason. For the heck of it, I called the number to activate and it said my card was already activated. So IMO, your card will already be activated upon arrival or you will just need to call the 800 activation number.

just call customer service at 800-866-2453, and say "representative" when you hear the prompt. your new sim/line will be activated in no time. i would suggest you use the new sims from the box, it is ISIS compatible, not that it matters-but would be better if you'd wanna use that service in the future.

Bought a AT&T Note 3, can i not activate it?

So basically my roomie was kind enough to let me use his discount to buy a note 3 since i'm not eligible for a while.
Obviously the phone is for me, even though we bought it thru his account.
So do I still need to call AT&T and activate the phone (it came with a sim card in the package)
Or i can just ignore the sim card and calling them and just use the new note 3 with my sim card, and he uses his iphone with his old sim card thats already in there.
Do you know how does the whole thing work?

If you already have your own SIM card linked to your account, just put it in the phone and you are good to go as long as the phone is an ATT model. Also the phone will only work with a MicroSIM regular sized SIMs will not fit this phone.
On ATT the phone has no bearing on your account. What you are paying for is the SIM. I bought a Lumia when my contract renewed with ATT. Could not stand it so I bought an N3 full price and slapped my card in it. The device is even updated on my account on the website as being a N3 and not a Lumia.
oh cool.
So i dont have to do anything?
ATT doesnt care that the phone was never activvated?

On ATT phones are not activated. They are ready to use out of the box. The SIM is the key. All your account data is linked to the SIM, not the phone. You can use any phone that ATT sells on your account and you don't have to buy it from ATT . I bought my N3 on Amazon at full price but I still use it on my Lumia account. The exception is if you use a smartphone on a none smartphone account, when they see it on the network they will upgrade you and charge you accordingly. You cannot use ATT with a smartphone on a standard phone account.
OK let me shed some light. If you call and give them the imel number of the new phone then its registered and if you have the insurance it will automatically be transferred to the new phone regardless where you got it. That's the benefit. I have my Lumia insurance with att and my note 3 and s4 with square trade.

Activating T-Mobile MotoMaker Variant

Well, I searched a bit and couldn't find what I was looking for, so my question is, has anyone ordered the T-Mobile version and successfully activated it online through the T-Mobile website? If so, how did you do it? When I go to the activation page, it's asking for an "activation code" that I don't seem to have. I'd really like to save myself from having to go to the T-Mobile store to get it up and running, but it looks as though that's going to be my only option.

What you want to do is call T-Mobile on your current mobile phone (their 611 number) and tell them that you want to activate your new phone that came with a smaller T-Mobile simcard. They'll ask you for the 890 code on the new sim card that comes with the phone. Once you give that to them, they should be able to activate the card for you and you should be good. Make sure to call them on your current phone, or whichever phone number you're trying to activate, so they can verify that it is you.
I actually did all of this yesterday. I thought I would have had to go to the store to pick up an new simcard also, but it was that easy. Got it activated in 5 minutes. Have fun!

Awesome! Thanks for the tip! What I want to do is have them port my verizon number and get on their $30/mo. prepaid plan.
Try calling them but I think you can only get the $30 dollar pre paid plan by signing up on the web site,

This is exactly what I want to do is well. You can do it on the website, but what I have been trying to search is if the SIM in the phone will work with the prepaid plan. The paper it comes with says your T-mobile SIM is already in the phone. However, I have no idea if it'll work on the $30 plan. I ordered 2 SIMS from the site today under their prepaid section because I thought nothing came with the phone.
So this is what i'm stuck on. Can I activate the phone online with the $30 plan with the SIM included, or do I need to wait for the ones I ordered & pop them in? Those are the nano SIM starter kit no activation ones on their prepaid site.

Right, that's why I wanted to do it online. I ended up ordering a new sim from t-mobile which was FREE (nice!) and activated online that way. I'm rock'n and roll'n now!

I don't know if the sim that comes ships in the phone from motomaker will work. My problem was I couldn't find an activation code for the one that came with the phone. It said you had to call, but the website says you can only do the prepaid plan by activationg online or buying at walmart. I didn't bother calling because by the time i was ready and able to call, the new sim i ordered from t-mobile had arrived in the mail, so I crossed my fingers and tried that one instead. Good news is that it worked. My suggestion would be to do what I did and wait for the new sim to arrive in the mail because it will have an activation code unlike the the motomaker sim. You should just be able to swap the new one in and activate online for the prepaid plan of your choice. I didn't have to mess around with phone settings or anything. It did take about 24-36 hours for them to completely port my number though, so keep that in mind and don't cancel your current plan with your current carrier until the t-mobile phone is completely activated. For awhile, both were active and all calls/ texts were still going to the verizon phone, while I could send texts and make calls from both. Good luck!

[Q] AT&T Activation Question

Hey folks. Just ordered my Midnight Blue Nexus 6 from AT&T and had a quick question about activation for phones purchased directly from the carrier. Ideally, I wanted to buy a Cloud White Nexus 6 on contract, but since AT&T is only stocking the blue I figured I could buy it and either trade it or sell it on somewhere like Swappa and use that money to buy an unlocked Cloud White. But I haven't bought a phone outside my Nexus 5 in a few years which I just swapped in my iPhone's old SIM card, so I don't know how activation works.
Do these phones purchased from a carrier come pre-activated? Do you need to put in and register your phone number when you activate? Do you take it to a store usually? Basically, I'm concerned about if I need to open the box to take out the SIM or if I can leave it completely sealed and just resell it like that.
So how does AT&T usually do it?
Typically, when you buy a phone from any carrier (online or in-store), the SIM will either come pre-activated (if it's a new line), or will come with instructions to call a number and activate it (if you're replacing an existing phone). Either way, it's not a big deal, because you can always walk in to the store, pick up a new SIM, and transfer your account to that one. That will free up the SIM that came with the phone to be used by your buyer.
However, if you're extra paranoid, you can always open up the box and take out the SIM. The buyer can easily just walk into their carrier's store and pick one up (or, if they have a nano-sim already, just swap it over).

How to use Verizon upgrade on Nexus 6?

I'm on a family More Everything plan with shared data on Verizon and I finally became eligible for an upgrade. I'd like to know how I could use the upgrade to get a N6. What I've heard is that some people are upgrading to an iPhone 6+ and then selling it, then buying a N6 at full price. But I don't understand the details of that. Wouldn't the iPhone be activated/used at that point? How would I sell it at a new phone price? Also, I heard that Verizon charges a fee if the new phone isn't activated within a certain period after purchase. Would that be a problem if I bought the iPhone first (and didn't activate/open it), resold it, then waited for a N6 to become available to buy?

There is no problem buying a phone on contract, activating it, then giving it to someone else or selling it. The buyer takes a risk that you cancel your contract and skip out on the Etf, in which case Verizon will blacklist the phone. But they will not prevent you from selling the phone or someone else activating it. The buyer simply brings the phone to Verizon to obtain a SIM card.
So if I went into my VZW account online and ordered an iPhone 6+ with my upgrade, would it arrive in a retail box unactivated or does VZW activate it for you with the SIM installed?

It arrives unactivated with a SIM tied to your account. If your intent is to sell, then I would activate it, then switch back to your old phone. You could just sell it unactivated, but your account might get stuck with a pending activation..which might eventually fall off.
Will my old sim remain activated after I activate the new one? I'm upgrading from a DNA which uses a micro sim. If it takes a while to sell the iPhone I'd like to keep using my old phone. I've never sold a phone before.

It will not. Just go to a Verizon store and they will switch you back for free. Might be able to call and do it.
Hm, so would it make more sense in that case to buy the N6 first (whenever it becomes available), then use my upgrade to get an iPhone and resell it? That way I could immediately activate the sim in the N6 and not even touch the iPhone. Or does the sim have to first be activated with the iPhone because that's what VZW is expecting to see on the account?

Has anyone unlocked the S6 for use on ATT?

I tried to start the process of unlocking my TMOBILE S6 today - first thing I discovered is that I need to get a new ATT NANO SIM Card - the Note 4 I am using has a Micro SIM - and the S6 uses the smaller NANO SIM CARD.
When I chatted with one of the online "unlock" web sites - they said they are not able to unlock the S6 EDGE because it does not give the user a prompt to enter an unlock code after inserting the ATT Sim Card.
he did not know if this would happen (or not happen) on the regular S6.
I am going to get a nano SD card from ATT and try it today - but after what I heard happened on the S6 Edge - It is not promising - it looks like TMOBILE is trying to close the door on people buying their phones and then immediately using them on ATT or some other provider.
If anyone has any experience they can share it would be helpful - I am going to see what happens later today after I get a new NANO Sim Card from ATT.
Updating my original post -
I have learned (thru attempting to use an ATT NANO SD CARD - that the only way to unlock the TMOBILE N920T at this time is by using a special AP available from TMOBILE - and then it will only work when TMOBILE has authorized it.
Cellunlockers or any of the other web sites that offer codes to unlock your phone will not work as you never are given a chance to enter an UNLOCK CODE.
I don't know if there are any other options - maybe secret samsung codes - or a special app by one of our illustrious developers - but for the time being, if you have purchased a TMOBILE S6 (like I have) and want to use it on ATT - it is not possible.
I would love to hear from any one who has an idea on what can be done about this (if anything) short of getting TMOBILE to give you an Unlock Code.
(I beleive the current policy at TMOBILE is that they won't give an unlock code until after 3 months of service. I might be wrong on that - but I beleive that is the situation.)
Any suggestions
What if i have been using T-Mobile for a few years now and decide to buy the phone full price. Wouldnt that also unlock the phone? My wife uses T-Mobile on her iPhone 5S and i wanted to buy a S6 Edge and pop her sim card in it, wait a few minutes and request the unlock. Would that work?

T-Mobile has no idea how to unlock it and they claim that they won't until after the phone officially launches (April 10th). I have been on the phone with them for hours over this.
I'm officially UNLOCKED!
I can tell you that I have had my S6 for about 4 days and I put my prepaid sim card in it instead of the one it came with (had to create a postpaid account so that I could get this phone!). I tried to unlock with the app on the phone and it told me NO, I am not eligible to do that, but I just tried it a 3rd time about 30 mins ago and BOOM! I am permanently unlocked and can confirm that AT&T works great! The phone rebooted and it automatically froze the unlock app. LOL I un froze the app and sure enough, I am perm unlocked! Not bad for using the phone for less than a week and not calling T-Mobile even once to ask. Just wanted to give people a heads up in case u wanted to try this yourself with a pre-paid sim (if u have a prepaid account, of course). I love my $30 plan so I will be cancelling my service so that I don't have to pay for anything except for the phone itself. Good luck!
Wow! Lucky!
I tried 10 times with an AT&T sim but no luck.

Since it's associated with your account u gotta have YOUR SIM card in there in order for the app to know if you are even eligible or not. So, u are correct, u have to unlock it with a T-Mobile SIM card than after it reboots (if successful) then u can put a non T-Mobile sim in.
My question is.. S
Did your phone say unlocked before or after you put in the Att sim card. Your first post wasn't clear. Also are you rooted or no?

What he is explaining is that he had his T-Mobile SIM card in the phone, he then opened the T-Mobile unlock app and tried to unlock the phone. And it told him no. So he tried a few more times, and finally it allowed him to unlock the phone. Then AFTER the phone was unlocked he put his AT&T SIM in and it worked.
The reason behind this is for the T-Mobile unlock app to work it has to check your account to verify that you are eligible for the unlock to occur. The phone will not unlock with any SIM that is not a T-Mobile SIM because it will not be able to verify if it is or is not eligible. And since there is no chance to enter an unlock code there is no need to put your AT&T SIM in the phone until after it is already unlocked. Basically they changed everything.
To be eligible for the unlock from T-Mobile, you must have an account in good standing at least 40 days old, and the device must be paid in full. So my suggestion would be to find a friend or family member that has had T-Mobile for a while and swap their SIM into your phone and do the unlock request, afterwards swap out your AT&T SIM and you should be good to go.
Thanks for the clarity that was lacking in the original post. Unfortunately I don't know anyone who has tmobile. Oh well... Waiting ain't so bad...
Unlock code
I bought an unlock code, as everyone stated the unlock code screen doesn't come up with an ATT sim installed but if you turn the phone on with no SIM in it and the. Go to the phone screen, type #7465625*638*# it will take you to the unlock code screen. I was able to get an unlock successful but when I restart the phone with my ATT sim it still says insert valid sim. Very weird and very frustrating. Have a friend that is prepaid. To unlock a prepaid phone, T-Mobile requires that you put at least $100 in your prepaid account if the account is newer than 1 year old. My question is, have you deposited over $100 in your account, or did you just recently open up the $30 line and you got lucky? Trying to replicate with my $30 plan I just bought

You are correct, but that is only one of their stipulations... You have to be activated for at least 40 continuous days for the phone you are trying to unlock AND your account must have had at least $100 of funds that have been put on it with the number assigned to the phone you are unlocking. With me, none of those requirements were met and my unlock still went through so I don't really know what the hell happened but it was def not policy. See, I have had the same prepaid number with the same $30 plan for over a year but I have not maintained continuous service. I jump from carrier to carrier so as long as I don't let my number get deactivated then I can keep going back to that plan but if I don't fund my account for over 90 days then my prepaid number gets recycled and I have to get a new sim card to get back on the plan I had. It may seem weird but I have been doing this 4 awhile now so I have caught on to the way T-Mobile works. I just put $30 on my account so that I could upgrade to the S6 but then I was told NO and that I had to wait til they were available at stores and that did not fly with me so I activated a postpaid account in order to get the S6 but I never put the new accounts sim card in my S6, I just immediately put the prepaid sim card from my old account in there and that's the way I got it unlocked. It's confusing but I'm trying to give you the best details I can so everyone knows EXACTLY what I did. Hope that helps...
Just bought a T-Mobile s6 today and it was unlocked when I purchased it, the guy I bought it from has been with T-Mobile for 5 years and he unlocked it right away when he got the phone. All you really need to do is find someone that has had a T-Mobile account for the said time and pop the sim in ur phone and get it unlocked. Working like a champ on ATT network.

Good luck!
