[Q] Network messages coming through in Chinese and invid MMI codes - Galaxy S III I9305 (4G LTE + 2GB RAM) Q&A, Help &

I've recently left my i9100 for an i9305 and decided to start by flashing the equivalent to my favourite ROM from my S2, namely SlimSaber (SlimKat unoffical build with Saber Mod) from here (build 8.0).
Anyway, regrettably i never tested out the phone much with the stock software because i wanted to go strait back to the KitKat experience I'm used to. I did however unlock the phone using USSD code *#19732864# as outlined in method 3 here. I believe I followed it exactly and it worked without a hitch
With it unlocked i put in my GiffGaff SIM and the first thing I noticed was that after every text, instead of getting the regular message saying "woohoo that text was free" or relevant credit update, i just get a similar box with a load of Chinese text.
Then I realised that the proximity sensor doesn't work. I don't mean to go specifically into that problem in this thread but while researching a fix I came across some USSD codes that might help. Now I can get a few to work: *#06# to show my IMEI , *#31# (Checks outgoing caller ID settings) and *#*#4636#*#* (User statistics and Phone Info), but all others I've tried just give me "Running USSD Code" and then "Connection problem or invalid MMI Code". This includes the one I unlocked my phone with in the first place and all the ones that are supposed to help my problem. A couple of the codes (*#526# and *#528#, both for WLAN Engineering Mode) yielding more Chinese text in place of the second message. I've tried putting a coma or semi-colon after the codes to no avail.
I presume that the network messages run on the same system as USSD/MMI and that the problems are connected. Not sure if the proximity sensor issue is connected.
The fact that a code worked before, but then stopped working seems to imply that it was something to do with flashing the ROM. Can anyone confirm that custom ROMs can mess with your USSD codes? Or could the unlock process have changed something? I've tried different kernels but the problem persists. Does anyone know at what firmware level native USSD codes are defined?
Many thanks for any input.

Chinese Gibberish
In case anyone's interested i took a screen shot of the Chinese text and put it through an optical character recognition web site. This is what came out after "Processing USSD code" for *#528# :
口秀一鼬一儡公囿一 找偎偎鬟醋蝌找阡醋份一
Which Google takes as:
Mouth of a puppet show, a male ferret caught a cuddle cuddle find DW vinegar vinegar a tadpole to find a footpath
Not very meaningful but at least quite amusing.
Then where I'd normally get "woohoo that text was free", instead it reads:
囿架架栀架蘖 王含栀揪王含 王含攀砀王含 目月T秋窃沙 昀
煸攀攀 嚣架甄蹴 想锹重毛锹瀵振攀 惋渺 彗沙王含惋蔓毛翼毛
Or:
Caught rack rack rack tiller Wang Zhi Zhi pulling containing containing Wang Wang Wang Dang containing climb mesh containing sand Yun month T autumn burglary
Well despite the problems with online translation it seems like this really is pure nonsense, which at least suggests to me that this is probably some kind of data that was never meant to be interpreted as Chinese text rather than the product of an incorrect language setting somewhere. Might be wrong.
Cheers

Wrong forum, ask a moderator to move it to i9305 q&a.

Chinese sorted
Right, Chinese gibberish was sorted by flashing updated modem from here as detailed here. However I am still suffering from invalid MMIs.
I should point out that I've tried all the methods outlined here. For anyone wondering how to get a comma or semi-colon on the dialer, add two-sec pause or wait respectively from options in the bottom right corner.

Operator Code Problem

Hey guys, when I use GetDeviceData, the DeviceData.txt file I get contains the following where my operator code should be:
AT%CID?
(OK, it's not coming out right as text, so I posted up an image)
This is not a HUGE issue, as I can still upgrade my phone just fine, but it is worrying me.
Any ideas, comments, answers?
Ignore device data now, it's useless. You could however check this invaluable list of Model ID so you can get your operator code
@TheLastOne
Been a long time.
I have seen a few posts about trashed OPID codes and have not been able to work out were they come from or why they come about.
With the MA_noid...exe the Country code problem sort of went and I have yet to find a reason why we need a OPID in the first place (bar to stop us loading roms from other carriers).
As A German MDAIII user I have been flashing my GER device with WWE roms too many times to count and they all have worked on my swiss carrier.

Solution to problems sending sms

Some modern SIM cards use automatic SMSC, so the SMSC is NOT stored on the sim as delivered from the provider.
HTC Touch Diamond/WM6 can't handle this.
Unfortunately the interface does not allow you to set it (incorrectly reports network error)
Here is a workaround for different OSs, let's start with WP6:
1) Download the nice tool ATcommander from this thread
Url: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2715738
2) Unfold exe to the phone
3) Run the exe on the phone
Enter
AT+CSCA?Click send, verify that the number is not set or incorrect
Enter (substitute your providers SMSC, +4540390999 is danish TDC)
AT+CSCA="+4540390999",145Click send
(145 indicattes international number, see se eg http://www.developershome.com/sms/cscaCommand.asp)
4)
Boot it, and enjoy!
ADDENDUM I:
In below posts different syntaxes has been reported as needed for other (early Android) phones. Like:
AT+CSCA="004540390999" (no type and country code indicated by 00 not +)
AT+CSCA="40390999" (no type, and no country code)
Please try to see what works for the chipset and OS of your phone
ADDENDUM II:
For Androids like the Xperia 2011 phones (at least it works with 2.3.4) you can access the SMSC setting with a build in function.
In the dialer enter
*#*#4636*#*# (4636="INFO")select "Phone information"
Scroll down to SMSC and click "Refresh"
You will see an entry (including the quotes) like
"+4531300040",145for 3.dk in Denmark
And you can edit/enter the SMSC as needed and press Update
As you might have noticed, the format is identical to the "AT+CSCA" parameters above, so it is most likely just a nice wrapping.
Best Regards
Eske Rahn
PS this problem has apperantly been around for years, so the problem is most likely WM not HTC.
see e.g. http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-242938.html
That describes exactly the same error I got
ER
PPS Keywords, the errormessage:
"Try viewing settings later, or disconnect data connection and try again"

Thank yo very much it worked for me just fine.
I had a problem with my new Xperia x1 and 3G sim from Saudi Arabia telecom Co.
The problem was unability to send SMS messages while I can receive them and sim cannot read sms network settings as well.
WITH YOUR WORKAROUND SOLUTION, I was able to resolve this trouble so, many thanks again and again.
I have HTC HD and had the same issue. About two months I have looked for solution for this problem.
And finally I got it ... here
Thank You so much eske.rahn !!!
Hi, not sure if this is the correct thread for this so sorry if i'm wrong. Have an SMS problem on my phone which is kinda similar to this. I can't send sms messages!!! They just sit in the outbox.
I have a mda IV which is unlocked and am using an O2 sim on it. Everything works great except that now and then I can't send SMS (texts), can receive them ok but not send. Tried my sim in other phones and works ok. Tried other sims in my phone and they don't work either. Also tried soft/hard reset. Have the correct number in the SMS settings and my phone registers on the network ok.
Anyone help please???????
update: i now haven't been able to send a text for 2 days. I don't get any error messages when i try and send.

Sorry for the late reaction, haven't reviewed this thread for ages...
This does indeed sound like the same problem. Can you see/change your SMSC?
If you already have the correct number entered as SMSC the workaround described will not help. The SMSC is provider dependant. There are many lists 'out there' with SMSC's. So google "SMSC" and your providers name, this should provide you with the correct number.

He he, I too wasted a lot of time searching to no avail, until I remembered that this used to be an issue on my old phones a decade ago.
Thanks for this - worked first try on my Diamond which was OK untill I flashed a new ROM (Natalay 2.100). When I tried to check the message centre number I got the cannot read error. It would read other sim cards and another phone could read my sim card (an Orange 3G sim). I tried changing the radio several times and was about to get a new sim card as it was the only other solution I could find that had worked for other people. I can now read the message centre number OK.
I love XDA comunity!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks it worked
big thanks finally my xperia works as it should
really thanx man it helped .... i've been searching for over 6 month for a way i could change by it the message center
Still doesn't work for me, when i'm on andriod..
it didnt worked for me !!!
I'm from romania ..i own a htc diamond and i just did what you told me to do with AT comannder
it went well until i had to send at+csca = "the number it showed",145
and it gives me an error....
i have tried in so mani ways.. even the => start/settings/phone/band
im finding hard to believe that i can't do anything !
Thank you for your time...and hope that someone comes up with a solucion!
thx for this very useful topic. Solved my problem in seconds...
Just to note that for Android this didn't work for me until I changed the number to remove the + sign and substitute 00. Also removed the ,145 at the end.
So, for example:
AT+CSCA="+31653131313",145
Would become:
AT+CSCA="0031653131313"
Not sure if this is the case in all builds, but it certainly fixed mine. The SMS in WM still works with this change, so no harm done.
thanks you are very helpfull
For Vodafone AU the SMSC was stored on the SIM but in +61... format, I alo had to change it to a local only number using:
AT+CSCA="0415011501"
WM still works and Android now works after that. Hopefully I don't need to go overseas for a while...
Thanks its work, with my HTC Diamond and Indosat simcard,
Thx you....
thanks very much! spent many hours hard resetting, talking to my service provider, etc. this finally works.
hi,
i face similar problems with htc diamond, wm6 & nataly rom. sometimes i do not receive some sms. i dont have a problem in the outgoing messages. only in the incoming. any help ?
Happy
I'm glad to see that it had helped people.
And sorry for the delayed reaction, been out of this forum for a few years...
But yes markzb, the implementation of AT-commands of the 'modem' might vary slightly. Thanks for the input on what syntax other phones accepts *ThumbsUp*. I'm not sure if it is an OS or chipset difference, but I would guess chipset...

Major Issue with Stock Phone

I received a brand new touch pro yesterday from Sprint. I performed an activation online and I can place calls and send text messages with no problems. However, the internet connection doesn't work. I called sprint and they tried to get me to program the phone but the unlock code they provided doesn't work. They gave me two unlocked codes to try. I even tried to use the GETSPC program and the codes generated there still doesn't work. Any reason why? I noticed that under the device information section, the MEID displays the HEX rather than the DEC number. Is there a way to fix this issue? Thanks.
It's an account provisioning problem. Stop by a Sprint store and have them look up your account. Otherwise, just get the unit exchanged if it still doesn't work.

Is there any way to make my cappy recognize my country's area codes?

Well I've being looking for a way of doing this but i didn't found one. I live in Argentina and I have almost all my contacts cellphones starting with the prefix 15. But when someone calls me the prefix 11 appears instead. I really want the phone to tell me who is calling/texting me without having to change my whole contact list prefixes to make the phone understand that they are actually the same number. Any ideas? I bet I'm not the only one that has stumbled into this issue

Find 'My Xperia' Utility

Hi Everyone ,
I'm new to this whole Sony Xperia thing being a new convert from the iPhone , so forgive me if this sounds a bit odd.
I've just enabled and activated the Find 'My Xperia' utility , that on the face of it is like iPhone's 'Find my phone' , the only difference and correct me if I'm wrong here , whats to stop me turning it off in the settings (assuming i have no pin on the keypad - ok so i'd deserve it if that was the case). But it also seems easy enough to reflash my 'lost' phone with a virgin stock firmware and then thats the find my xperia utility disabled , as it needs to be active on the phone as well as online. IOS stops you doing this by locking the phones repair and activation unless you unlock it with your iTunes account.?
Does this seem a bit of a half hearted effort or am i missing something?
Thanks guys.

I can and have pushed updates to my iPhone when I was playing with that and had the phone locked. Could have been a fluke but still should have never happened. I have also flashed ios firmwares that were no longer signed without SHSH blobs including betas without being a dev.
IMHO, lock your phone and see what it does. I do not use those apps because the iPhone one was wasted on me and if my phone is not in my hands or pocket we probably have larger issues.
You may need to log in with your PSN ID to unlock the device. This would be similar to using an Apple ID to unlock the device.
My Xperia Utility
Hi there,
Thanks for the reply , I tried it out by registering and locking my handle remotely , and as I guessed reflashing with a stock ROM wiped any trace of it and I was unable to trace it.
I'm assuming it's this way as the handset does not need to talk to an authentication server like the iPhone's do prior to activation.
Was interesting to do though.... Bored now.

Yeah, My Xperia and similar solutions are useful, but if a determined and/or technically clued up person steals your device then you almost certainly aren't going to be able to retrieve it that way. They're more of a deterrent to the opportunistic thief than anything.
I have Cerberus and have it set to email me images via the front camera on incorrect unlock attempts. My phone also automatically switches over to a secure lockscreen when away from my home wifi. The power menu also don't display in the lockscreen, so makes it difficult for someone not in the know to power off my phone.
If my phone goes missing for more than an hour and I receive any notification of incorrect unlock attempts, then it's being wiped remotely and a message to call my other line is displayed to return the device. If that fails, then a phone call to my provider to get the phone totally blocked is the next step.
