I have borrowed an HD7 from a friend running the absolute latest Mango beta I believe - beta 2 I think.
Anyway, I want to be always online with Google Talk ala Android. I see it has options for push notifications and running under lock screen. I dont really get it. I want the best battery life I can get, but I want notifications as quickly as possible when someone sends me a message. I have the live tile pinned to my home screen too, but it seems to take a little while to get a notification.
Can anyone help a bit with this stuff please.
If you are using Mango beta2. Then under Messages you will find threads. From there you can be online with Windows Live Messenger and it is the best. Instant notifications and toast.

Push notifications are dependant on IM+ sending them to Microsoft in a timely manner, and for Microsoft to send them to your phone in a timely manner.
This is not something you can control unfortunately. Sometimes they get to your phone instantly, sometimes they don't. Despite it being called 'push' notifications, its not always on and always waiting for notifications. That would eat up too much battery life. Best thing to do would be to wait for Mango to finally come out, and for IM+ to be updated to support true background multitasking so that it can send you more instant notifications.

Hmm, interesting, didnt know it went through Microsoft. What about the whole running under screen lock business. Does that help?
Thanks

Running under lockscreen would only continue to drain the battery as if you phone was on and actively pulling/sending data. So don't expect your phone to last too long with it on.
That being said, you should definitely see an improvement in notification response time since the app is open and actively pinging the server for new messages. Best case it should notify you as quickly as it can download the latest IM from whoever talks to you.
And then there is the fact that if you leave it on under lockscreen, in order for that to operate properly, you need to open the app every time right before you put the phone into standby. Otherwise, the app closes/freezes when you do anything else with the phone. Or you can simply do nothing with you phone and leave IM+ open at all times... but then it wouldn't be much of a phone. XD
First time android user, ive had my note 3 for barely a day. Just switched from the iPhone 4s, so my switch to android has been surprising to say the least.
The spoiler below summarizes my first struggle/rant with how "amazing" android customization is.
They say android is very customizable, and it is, but what they don't tell you is that there are no good apps to do what you want to do. For example, I tried syncing my iTunes library to my android phone. Doubletwist wouldnt work because my library is in a different place than where iTunes installs normally, and it seems that iTunes only updates iTunes Library.xml instead of the iTunes Music Library.xml, so not all my music is transferred to my phone anyway. Good interface, bad performance. Right now im using the free trial of iSyncr, which works great, but has a ****ty icon/interface, with the free trial of playerpro for a music player with a good interface and the ability to change play counts and ratings so it reflects in my iTunes library. Once those free trials end, I'll have to dish out 10 bucks just to do what was native on iPhone. I understand you can drag and drop music, but im not gonna go through my entire music library every time i have to transfer over a new song (so I avoid duplicates of songs already on there), or wait 30 minutes each time to transfer my whole library over every time I want to sync (replacing my old library). Google Play is nice and all, but it doesnt keep track of play counts, and I just hate the fact that its streaming. What if I was stuck in a class that was in a brick classroom that just killed my network connectivity and provided no wifi? (I do encounter this at my university some times). Does that mean I cant listen to music?
1. What are the LED notifications? What does red mean? what is blue? what is green? My note 3 didnt come with a manual... I think my phone told me when i was setting it up, but it was a lot to take in, so i forgot some parts.
2. Are the apps with a blue circle with a white arrow on the lower bottom left corner of the apps free? or just shortcuts to buy the app in the app store? I hope they are free apps that come bundled with it, since I would love to use the sketchbook app, but I dont wanna pay for it when I can use the mobile free version.
3. I want to get rid of the bloatware on my phone, but I have no clue which apps are bloatware and which ones are actually useful (besides the obvious ones that are branded with AT&T and samsung(are the samsung apps useful?). What ROM should I flash to get to stock android (and rooted since it seems like some of these roms come with root). I dont want any fancy themes or whatever, since most of the time, they suck.
4. Can I set lockscreen notifications? Or do i have to unlock my device, pull down the notifications bar, and go from there?
5. Can I customize the icons on the status bar? Like their location on the status bar (id like to have my 4g and at&t signal on the left, instead of the 4g in the middle of nowhere) or what shows up on the status bar?
6. What is the best themeing app called?
7. uhh thats all the questions I can think of now, but its only been a day. Once i start using it more, i'll have more questions, but im sure I can figure those out myself unless its a stumper.
edit:
7. How do I set my mail to automatically load images?

I feel for the original poster as I too came from IOS which I had been using for around 4 years prior. Fortunately I did get a little way time with a Galaxy S4 prior to getting the Note 3.

no, its actually not helpful at all. i can google the manual for myself, thank you very much. If i needed someone to google it for me, I wouldnt have posted.
The manual does not answer any of my questions. If you disagree, show me what page actually answers any of my questions.
Instead of just sending me to google.com, is it really that hard to take 1 minute of your time, and post your own opinion? I would only be okay with this if there was a stick or something that actually answered my questions, but theres not, so stop trying to be a smartass.
you said you used your iphone before the s4. wow, thats so helpful to me. Why not take the time to answer my questions instead of bragging how you had a previous android phone that helped you transition.

Just because i said I didnt get one doesnt mean that I cant google it for myself. I already googled it before I even posted in this thread, and looked through it. I decided it didnt help me, so I posted.
Why the hell do you even have this sub-thread if youre just gonna suggest that everyone post in the stupid questions thread? no one even replies there either, people just post new questions.
@Limeybastard
thanks for the video, thats pretty useful, but it only (barely) answers one of my numerous questions. what about my other questions?
im trying not to double post, but theres a 5 min timer between when I can edit posts...

thats really weird, I dont have an option for more settings on my stock email app. I have account settings, then under display settings, it shows display, composing and sending, auto advance, confirm deletions, priority senders, spam addresses, rules for filtering and split view mode. No other option for more settings or how often I want my mail being checked.

thank you for your help now lol. However, some of your answers dont make sense to me. To change the icon locations in the status bar, you said hold down the icons. However when I do it, notification center gets pulled down. Im guessing I need root for this?
and I tried using the gmail app, and I do like it, I would just prefer if I could change the default inbox to be set to all mail. Any way I can do this?

It doesn't help that you're coming from a platform that doesn't want to make it easy for you to move...
I feel the same way about the streaming music services, and I tried to explain this to my roommate who works at google, and has drunk the koolaid. The impression I got from him was that we shouldn't be in places that don't have internet - and I'm all for avoiding those, but those times when I can't, I really want to be able to listen to music! At least the note 3 has a microSD card slot, so you can store lots of music on a 64GB micro SD card.
I just put all my music onto a MicroSD card and pointed Music Folder Player at it. I don't know if this will work on an iTunes library though.

I don't think anyone said this already... You can't flash roms on an AT&T note3, the bootloader is locked. All we can do is root the stock rom (until someone comes up with a bootloader exploit). But you can do a lot with "just" root.
As for samsung apps being useful, probably all you want is the S-Pen related ones.
If you use the Email app (not just GMail), do not disable MyMagazine, however annoying it is; it breaks the basic email app if you do.
The apps with the circle and arrow are shortcuts to download the apps. I just checked on a few of mine, though, and they look to be free. It looks like Samsung had the courtesy not to install all of the bloatware they wanted to? Or maybe they have to pay royalties based on how many people actually install it...? (at least some of them are not samsung products)

Thats very true, but theres also no music manager for android either. Okay well, i'll give you winamp, but honestly, i hate the look of winamp, and most of the themes/skins for it are also terrible. I tried googling for themes for the android app, and I couldnt even find any (then again, i didnt look too hard. just a simple google search).
say what you want, iTunes is a pretty good music manager for those who like to manage their music, but arnt anal about tagging. Ive found that using iSyncr and PlayerPro together have been a great substitution for the same experience as on an iPhone. Except that you CANT SET PlayerPro as your default music app. Apparently people have had issues with the same thing, and theres just no solution on how to set PlayerPro as your default app. I might try finding another music app soon if I cant figure it out, since I play my music through bluetooth in my car, and if I cant choose the songs through my cars system, theres no point.
What do you mean change songs through your car's system? Is it really too much trouble to pick up your phone and press the skip button on whatever music player is running.
And what do you mean by "default music app"? If you want to run something different than what you have, just put that icon on your home screen and open it instead.
I don't know why former iOS sheep have to make things so complicated, like" how do I get this to look/act/do the same as my iPhone "? Something sent you this side of the Isle, just embrace android for a few day whilst you learn the basics of the platform and your device.

Were you able to select the music before on your iPhone through Bluetooth? Because I would love to find what ever head unit/car you have, because my wife would love that. Only place I've ever seen seen that is if you plug in the iPhone, never though Bluetooth.

I imagine the best thing about owning a gear is keeping your phone in your pocket on silent and only bringing it out when you want to reply. Also, answering phone calls while driving and music control when your phone is docked to the speakers.
I've played around with my friend's pebble and its annoying that notifications aren't synced with your phone. You have to view them once on your watch and them dismiss them again on your phone.

there is no difference with the gear. You have to dismiss notifications on the gear (which can be a bit annoying as you have to go through each app's notifications and dismiss), and they won't be dismissed on the phone, you have to dismiss it on the phone as well.
Supposedly the gear does clear the phone emails and mark them as read if you use the native email app. I use Gmail and do have to clear the phone again after reading in the gear. Also the gear doesn't show the entire email. It shows most of it, then says to see the rest on the phone...

That's for non Samsung apps right? But all the rest will clear just fine?

I thought that was the whole point of smart relay?
gear made my life easier, but only because of custom ROM. i'm still using null 11.1 where everything is working for me, so i don't see a need to make an update and spend another hour configuring everything, i'm not a number whore..
stock gear is a devils device, terrible to use with zero configuration.

I've been reading up and looking at YouTube on what u can do with null rom but I'm still confused. How is this better than stock rom? Do features like smart relay still work with null rom?

yeah, of course if you load an email app on the watch and have internet to the watch, then marking an email as read on the watch will mark it as read on the server, and mark it as read on any device, including your phone. but using the built in gear notifications, it won't do this.

no. smart delay is just to open up the app on your phone. So if you're looking at an SMS notification on your watch and you pick up your phone, Gear Manager will open up the SMS app on your phone for you. This in turn will clear the notification, but only as a side effect.

i never used smart relay, but i guess it will work, because wake-up gesture works on mine.
why is it better? because it is. i can use internet, have a custom layout for my apps (no more swiping across 7 pages to get to the voice memos or any other app). if i want to do something on my watch, i can do it within 3 seconds, literally.
i can start a direct dial to a predefined person.
i can record 60 seconds videos with custom rom.
i can secretly record both video and audio without time limit while keeping screen off (saves battery life).
i can set a countdown timer, or a stopwatch.
i can read ebooks.
i can sync my google keep notes
i can sync my grocery list
i can browse 9gag on my wrist
i can use calculator!
i can check and answer to my emails (by using gmail and google keyboard)
i can use google translate service (with both text and audio input)
i can check my bank account
i can use hangouts IM
i can play some simple games
i can have full calendar agenda
i can use full google maps
.. and way more.
now, what can you do with stock rom?
you can answer calls.
you can take 15 secs max videos.
you can reply to texts using s voice.
you can download stock apps available in samsung store (not a single one is worth your time)
you can pair it only with other samsung phones.
for me the answer is clear. if i can't put null on it, it goes back to store as a terrible smartwatch. it's capable of way more things than samsung officialy let you use..

Wow! I never thought about using it that way, impressive indeed especially direct call and text. While on null rom u can still receive SMS and call notifications like how you would on stock gear Rom right? Or does it replicate how a real phone does it?

i can receive sms and call notifications and also notifications from other apps (you choose what you want displayed).
there is no easy way to reply to texts though, there is a tabletsms but it doesn't work so fluently.
you do not loose any functionality when running custom rom. you just gain more.
Since we're not allowed to use our cell phones at work, I'm able to covertly use the internet with this thing.

Hi
Does anyone else have problems with notifications? For me they work for few hours and then they stop working and only rebooting the phone fixes it.
It happened to me today...
Non of notifications alerted on my gear 2....
Restarting the gear, no change, restarting the phone... the notification is back
I do have notification but I don't get any details about it, no preview of the messages at all, just that I should check details on my phone... ridiculous! they do it on purpose...
I have found that I only get notifications on the Gear when the phone screen is on. If the phone screen is off, no notifications except Gmail.

Yep, having similar issues, however I get the notification on the phone, however it doesn't vibrate for all apps, behaviour is very inconsistent. I have emailed samsung support but am not holding my breath

With the new gear manager update i seem to be getting my notifications more consistantly, but also, like you, have lost all detail to them. Only the fact that I got a notification and what it came from (text, email,...). It no longer gives the text or email body.
I would love to hear if someone has a fix for this.

I'm getting exactly this issue.
Hopefully we'll see a fix for this. I'm sure Samsung is right on top of it.
:/
The issue is you updated galaxy gear manager.
There is a new setting in it to control it the notification has a preview, or just to tell which app gave the notification.
Seems like this setting only works for tizen os.
I updated to tizen using these instructions and all works again.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-gear/help/how-to-properly-flash-tizenmod-t2886991
(kies3 wasnt recognizing my phone) .
Good luck.
I didn't feel the need to update to tizen. I liked android and my watch styler. But preview of messages is a necessity.

Weird. That option has always been available
I dont rememeber which thread i got this File saprovider , all you have to do is Force close GearManager , then uninstall Saprovider "settings > application manager " then install the one from link.
this should fix everything , stop battery drain and make it works as it should be, notification and media control ... etc
Just incase , stop auto update from samsung app market.
Tried the saproviders.apk mod, and it still didnt bring back complete notifications.
All WhatsApp notifications show as "WhatsApp" instead of the senders name, which is kinda useless.
Cant stop Gear Manager from updating, as there is no option.
If you hit cancel, it will exit. If you hit update, it will update even without samsung Apps, as it's updating independently now.
I know this because I don't have Samsung Apps on My phone.
yeah its damn force update again and mess up everything again
I'm getting notifications, but no popup on my gear. They show in the notifications app on the gear, though. Sad days...
