Over saturation under the sun? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone,
I've been noticing this weird thing with my Note. When I go under the sun and its bright, my screen becomes completely over saturated!

I have noticed it as well, I just figured it was to be able to see whatever is on the screen better when in direct sunlinght

Yeah, that's when the screen goes into super turbo boost mode lol.
When Automatic Brightness is turned On, the Galaxy Note 4 reaches an impressive 750 cd/m2 in High Ambient Light, where high Brightness is really needed – it is the brightest mobile display that we have ever tested. As a result of its high Brightness and low Reflectance, the Galaxy Note 4 has a Contrast Rating for High Ambient Light that ranges from 100 to156, the highest that we have ever measured for any mobile display.

And just so you might wonder why the screen is so dark lol
Super Dimming Mode
The Galaxy Note 4 also has a Super Dimming Mode that allows the Maximum Screen Brightness to be set all the way down to just 2 cd/m2 (nits) using the Brightness Slider. This is useful for working comfortably without eye strain or bothering others in very dark environments, or affecting the eye’s dark adaptation, such as when using a telescope. The display still delivers full 24-bit color and the picture quality remains excellent.

Yeah i noticed the same thing and thought it was a problem but its a boost in brightness

It is a Samsung feature with auto bright to allow the screen to be easier to read in sun. It was meant to be a feature anyway.

lol.. the point is to make sure whatever you're viewing is legible and readable. Even in the harshest sunlight this mode makes it possible. You are full of complaints arent ya! ^_^

Considering it is the only one i got...I guess I am.
Still having an exchange, perhaps what im not seeing what you all are talking about...it happens for a brief 5 second and goes to a normal screen (Can't even read so if its a feature, it failed). Putting in the order tomorrow. Thanks for the help anyway ^.^

Happened to me today, but everything was still legible....looks crazy at first....thought my screen was talking a s***. But yes it is a feature that needs some tweaking, but apparently as long as auto brightness is Not selected it won't switch like that in bright sunlight. Looks kinda like a negative polarization effect with a bright wash.
And are ya switching phones or swapping for another note....because the "issue" will be on any note 4

Meth... Not even once.

Isn't that setting for auto brightness? I want it to adjust brightness from light to dark rooms. But I don't want super nuclear mode in the sunlight. Looks terrible. Was trying to shoot pictures the other day with the sun at my back and I wasn't sure if it was the camera acting up or the screen. Only after I took the pictures and reviewed them later (indoors) did I realize they were ok. They need to fix this.

I love this feature. If you hover your finger over anything it puts a shadow over it. Pretty tight imo

Im not the biggest fan of this, it makes everything look really weird, especially when your trying to film something or take a photo as its hard to see what its actually going to look like. But i guess it does make the screen more visible. FYI disabling auto adjust screen tone makes no difference

Your new one will be the same. They all are when fully bright I've found.
Indeed. The colors return to normal indoors, though. I have no idea how HTC didn't spot this problem.
This isn't a problem it is to help with outdoor visibility it's similar to what sgs4 does when you enable it on a custom kernel

No, mine literally has a problem. I can't take a picture of it right now cause it's not doing it, but it flickered and became washed out. The reds would be orange, orange would be yellowish, and yellow would be nearly white.
This happens to all my Ones in the sun. Not indoors. Brightness doesn't matter, colors get washed out in the sun.
Wonder how none of the reviewers noticed that.

Happens to mine too. It gets really brighter i guess or the colors. (not really sure how to describe it).
A temporary fix I found:
As soon as you unlock and it happens, place your thumb over the sensors (the two dots on the top left next to your speaker) and it should automatically adjust back. :good:
Mine does this in the sun also. Becomes super bright then settles back down.

I thought there might be something wrong with mine. Glad to see that isn't the case.
Hopefully some way can be found to stop the screen from going to that "maximum brightness" level. I've used the method mentioned earlier of covering the brightness sensor but that's a temporary fix...

You have no idea how happy I was to read this. I never even thought to check my power settings and wondered why my One wasn't nearly as bright as my wife's Evo LTE.

So... Bsi sensor bleeding

Reminiscent of the HTC one it seems that my unit has a blue bleed onto the sensor from the backside illumination. Look up the m7 low light issues. They get worse over time so I'm thinking what will happen is it starts out very mild as it is now and gets significantly worse as time progresses. Here is an example.
You really have to look for it to see it. Crank up brightness and such. When taking low light photos the outer parts must be dark. But really this bs from a flagship. I'll be returning this phone. LG g3 here I come no more bs knox!

I don't care for black photos. You completely missed the point. If it's anything like how the HTC one m7 sensors were it starts out so small

Then clearly progresses into a full blown bad sensor. Looks like you completely missed my point of find it now, see if it's a widespread issue like the m7, track it to see if it gets worse, and fix it under warranry or replace if it's within return period like me. Above was my wife's htc one she never sent in(otterbox) next to an htc one we sent in and got back with a good sensor.
So it only gets worse... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2595534 and the main reference http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317507
Again I only made this thread because this is exactly how my wife's m7 started before it turned horrid. I played xcom on my phone which made it pretty hot for extended periods and ad the first thread states apparently gets worse with heat.

I was thinking the same thing
I made a test taking a picture with the lights off and the phone agains my bed.
ISO 100 --> a very nice black photo
Auto ISO (a very high ISO, i can't remember the value, but it's extremely high) --> you can see at the center of the photo a perfect black, but in the corners you can see some purple tint. It looks like noise, but it's a strange behavior that just the corners are affected.
why is it assumed that since you have the faulty sensor thats just how the S5 was made. maybe you have a faulty device and it needs excahnged. try a second device and see how it is. if its similar thgen this maybe an issue. but one thing from one device isnt "bs from a flagship device"
It gets worse if you enable picture stabilization. Mine has quite a bit in low light, but as FarKeld noted, it all goes away at low iso settings.
with picture stabilization ISO goes up to 2000
btw: I'm getting an annoying error "Unfortunately, Gallery has stopped" every time I try to see my photos

I Just realized how apparent it is in low light video. I guess it was iso noise or no picture at all.

All brightness level. The whole screen had a yellow hue if look at it straightly. But the yellow tint will disappear if the phone is tiled to any direction by 10 degrees.

Mine does this too- it's a "feature" of the last gen OLED displays that Samsung have fixed with the new gen (which Moto obviously couldn't source for this phone). My Nex did this too. Screen adjuster + manual brightness over 50% fixes it for me

interesting.. you mind sharing you setting for the screen adjuster? It's quite obvious and I wonder how all those online reviews don't seem to mention it. A blob of yellow/orange-ness moving across the screen as you tilt the phone
Just went to att store and it seems their display device also have the similar issue but a bit less. Maybe NY last phone, HTC one x, and retina mbp have made me too sensitive for such color changes..

It seems like the back panel material some times peels off and the buttons for some seem bad.
Edit:
There's also the chance of getting a bad battery or an underperforming processor.

I don't think so, but anything can happen. And not just with Motorola, defects happen everywhere. I guess my point was that since everything else with my phone is perfect except for a yellow tint depending on viewing angle, I'm not going to roll the dice and replace it unless I know the yellow screen is a fluke.

Note 4 Flicker

Hi guys,
I just wanted to revive the Note 4 flicker discussions that have been going on.
Basically, I wanted to know if there's any news on if PWM can be disabled yet at maximum brightness? I'm going to have a poke around with the system and see if I can do anything. But I doubt it.
I've noticed a lot of people have been stating in thread replies that it's pointless, and can't be seen by humans, I just got my Note 4, after having an iPhone 6 for two weeks. (That thing drove me up the wall). Prior to that I had a Nexus 5 and an S4. I absolutely love the Note 4 in every way, including the display, it's incredible. But the flicker is horrid, especially in my peripheral vision. A lot of people can't see it, I wish I couldn't. You guys are lucky.
A lot of people have also stated that they have 20/20 vision and can't see a thing, and pass it off as rubbish. But having 20/20 vision has nothing to do with your ability to distinguish pulses of light. I honestly think it's something to do with the brain, rather than the eyes.
And a few people just say if you don't like it, go get another phone. But yeah, as stated the Note 4 is fantastic. Love the thing. Just don't like the flicker and I'd rather solve the issue.
So yeah, that is all!
Did you try another phone? Maybe you have a faulty unit.
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app
They all flicker. I add pictures how display brightness work in another thread. There is on low brightness just a few lines on pixels 2-3 mm wide lit and moving at high speed from upward down direction. I wish that could be disabled but maybe amoled technology can't go low brightness with constantly lit pixel like S2 - very small brightness adjustments.
Or maybe is that battery save thing...
go to dev options and turn animations, transition and everything else off. it should eliminate your flicker. also change your background image to solid black 256 x 144.
It's not animation, it's way how screens work. It reduce perceived brightness by liting up small row of pixels and scroll it at high speed.
It probably also save energy and also screen can last longer.
Here:
S2 is solid one...

Just tested this on my Note4. It does flicker when not set to maximum (or close to maximum) brightness at a rather low frequency - much lower than screen flicker in most other PWM-based screens. This is certainly VERY bad news.
It seems the only way of fixing this is driving the screen always at maximum brightness.

But there is way, it it flawed on note. You could use filter to dim and set max brightness. But, note use top overlay over filter for spen function. Basically you capture dimed screen an in editor it dim it again. Also, spen circle is on max brightness....
All screens do this. Monitor, mobile phone, every single one. I can see it if I concentrate really really hard, but that's due to excellent vision and refresh rates etc etc. Every TV and phone i've had or looked at does this or something similar and i've had and used a lot.
Never gonna find a screen that doesn't. Try going and having a look at an Xperia Z3 lcd screen for a minute or two after using this phone and your worries will be null and void.
Not all monitors. And never full on/off state like amoled in note.
Black pixel and than white or whatever colors is displayed....
Tako look at my picture,. Note 4 in that time displayed full white background...
That why people who see flicker pwm in monitor perceive note 4 even harder...
I've never seen flicker like this before on any display. (Not taking into consideration CRTs).
And it doesn't matter how excellent your vision is. Being able to detect the PWM refresh probably has nothing to do with your eyes, let alone your excellent, perfectly spherical clear eyeball lens. I have stigmas in both eyes, everything is blurry for me and I can detect the flicker with ease. (One day I'll get glasses )
I'm just hoping it's fixable in software. Still, I can deal with it. This is like my fifth or something day with the note now, I'm loving it more every day and starting to care less about the flicker. You get used to it. *shrugs*
Are you guys still experiencing this flicker ? and have you found any solutions for it?

Yeah i found a good solution, i put it back in it's box and its for sale again.
This issue is deep into the hardware of how the display operates and cannot be modified. I'm using a Lumia right now, no nonsens device, everything is butter smooth and no crapware on it. Think i might switch for good now that windows 10 is a unified build on all windows devices, MS finally doing something good as well as win10 is free to everyone to update even on pirated versions.
Hehe ok, but did you notice flickering the whole time om your Note or just sometimes? And in all brightbess settings? I haven't notice any flickering on my device

Yeah some ppl dont see it and some do, i'm a pc gamer and when things dont run at 60fps i really see that, its the same thing with the flicker, when watching busy movies or playing games i dont really notice it, but when im browsing the internet or using whatsapp so basicly when there is a lot of white on the screen i can see it flicker, mosly on higher brightness settings. i'm really disapointed in this, its a really beautiful device and had very good things but the flicker is really a downside, id rater have a little less battery life than this flickering.
Ok i cant see any flickering on my device, but if i record the screen with the camera from another phone i can see some flickering, very strange

Don't see anything like that on mine (8gb/128gb tencent model)
Ok thanks for the feedback. I just watched MKBHD review and he noticed the same so I think that's normal.

When do you see that carton like effect?
I mean, O watched MKBHD video too and the only strange thing he noticed about the display is when he used the in display fingerprint reader. While pressing the finger on it the screen gets brighter and granier.

Thanks for you answer first of all.
Do you see it easily or you have to get really close?

When to get close.
You are welcome.
It's grainy on low brightness also has a black crush issue that's why the minimum brightness is high so the issue is not easily seen. If I use an app to put a dark overlay to lower the brightness then it becomes quite noticeable but during the day at normal brightness I won't notice it
I noticed on mine that whenever I lower the brightness, the gray color becomes a little bit red. And it also looks a bit grainy. I dont mind it though
Do you guys think there is a change for this for anyone on the Android 10 beta updates?
I have a grainy screen, I am running Beta 7
I hope this could be solved with a software update

Black Crush
There is a huge black crush on high brightness, I love watching movies and in dark scenes, it ruines my experience. I moved to ROG 2 from S7 and compared both displays, no black crush on S7. There is also display noise but the most annoying thing is black crush.
In lower brightness screen is too red, on higher brightness to much black crush, I don't know what to do. Next time I'm switching back to Samsung, they have excellent hardware and software optimization.
Right now I'm stuck with this bad display.
Hey Akhil
Was the issue resolved for you ?
I am facing same black crush with my Asus Rog 2
It's not going to be fixed guys especially now that rog3 is on the way.
I also have had
the grainy display (mostly noticeable on gray color in apps like x-plore dark mode.)
gray turning to red when below 40% brightness
most dark shades turn to pure black in lower brightness
and also that awful black crush. at first I thought the video quality was bad then I searched a bit and compared with an LCD and figured it's the display.
I mean how is it possible that the manufacturer doesnt test this stuff? We can literally see these issues from day 1 of using the device and they cant see it? They dont have even one person like us in their testing section or what?
It's just not acceptable.
I really love what Samsung is doing with oled, but rog2 has so many great features I just cant go for samsung.
I'll just wait to see what happens with rog3.
Hopefully someone will check all these issues first hand and let us know if they are still there.
