Hi Guys,
Hope this is the right forum to post this in. Says requests go in 'general', so here goes:
Over the last few days I have scoured the internet as well as XDA for a root on the LTE version from AT&T, branded SGH-i957. I have come across multiple people as well across multiple threads who have also expressed interest. The purpose of this thread is to concentrate work on this in one location separately since rooting and ROM development seem nonexistent at the moment. Also, I am willing to donate to any developer who can help us out. If other people are also willing, we can start a running total to give some motivation.
I have experience rooting and flashing multiple devices, but I am lacking in developmental skills, but I am willing to try if any developer for the wifi version has ideas but no device to try it on. From my limited knowledge, I believe you need to start with a rooted device to pull the ROM Dump from the device to start development.
Root Status:
ROOTED! (Thanks Da_G)

Here's an odin tar I put together to root the AT&T Galaxy Tab 8.9, along with a tar that contains the stock kernel.
You can return back to stock kernel immediately after flashing, or keep mine loaded up, works great either way.
Changes in this kernel:
ADB Insecure (gives you # root prompt at adb instead of $)
su, busybox added to ramdisk
script to install busybox and su at boot-up
init.d support for running init.d scripts at bootup
stock android bootanimation (so you can run custom boot anims)
Modded Kernel: http://ponack.net/TPC/dagnarf/sgh-i957-rooted-kernel-v2.tar
Stock Kernel: http://ponack.net/TPC/dagnarf/stock-kernel-odin-image-for-sgh-i957.tar
Open odin, put desired kernel .tar in PDA section, flash.
Install Superuser from market.
Done!
Don't have a device, so no overclocked kernel coming from me just yet, if I can get my hands on one expect it soon!

ROM Development:
N/A
Disclaimer: Not responsible for any bricked devices.
The 8.9 already had a weak support time. One ROM and one kernel. Then the ATT version comes out with a DIFFERENT SoC.
I agree. Please also looking to Bell Canada's version as well if possible... I am receiving it tomorrow...
Thanks for Posting this.
I will also donate 30 dollars .
I believe that 8.9 lte is the best tablet out there considering its low weight
I also am willing to assist in development although I have little if any experience this would be a good reason to get cracking on learning that stuff as I don't see anyone rushing to help us out. If there is a device willing to give it some work I also would pony up $50. 00 US greenback to the cause.
Currently Skyrocketing into Android Space!
You guys are so lucky. Canada doesn't get the free GSII-SR. I paid full price for my 8.9LTE ($650CAD!!+tax no less).
The whole reason I bought this even over the mythical 7.7 is because of the LTE chip and supposingly faster speed (I hope... 1.5GHz vs 1.2GHz). So at this point this is the fastest tablet aside from the Prime and should warrant more attention.
Sorry to get off topic a little, but does an launcher app like Go Launcher totally replaces Touchwiz?
Is it running as an APP?
What happens to Touchwiz when Go Launcher is active?
Esstenially does it slow my tablet down?
Thanks
Send a PM to XDA member toastcfh. He or someone on his team may be able to help you guys out. I have heard that root isn't possible, but I have no idea what that means. Did they lock the bootloader? AT&T is involved, so I am not surprised they locked things down...
Thanks motley. I will contact him and let you guys know what's happening.

I dont think the bootloader is locked. I think it is just an issue of this acting like a honeycomb cellphone.

Problem is, the VZW LTE 10.1 unit is still using the same Tegra SoC as the WiFi and 3G versions.
The AT&T/Bell Tab 8.9 is using a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC (same as the GS2 Skyrocket, T-Mobile GS2). And the Skyrocket/T-Mobile GS2 roots won't work because the phones using this SoC are all running Gingerbread, not Honeycomb.

This should be the firmware for the Galaxy Tablet 8.9 LTE

note: it is labeled as smartphone and not tablet, but the PDA matches mine exactly.
I'm still working on this. Sending out pm's to devs who have rooted similar devices.

What's scary is that the HTC Jetstream hasn't been rooted yet either, and it's been out for months. It uses the same SoC as the 8.9 LTE.
I'm sure the stupid high price didn't help the Jetstream though. Just not a lot of them ending up in the hands of the dev-minded.
What's encouraging, at least, is the BOGO deal on the 8.9 LTE/Skyrocket seems to be moving a fair number of Tabs in the US, which could lead to more dev support.

Keep us posted Orlando I for one would love to be able to root this and hopefully make it better than it currently is which suckyyyy!
I want to enable tethering from the 8.9. It seems att has removed this feature. I want to root to enable this functionality and I'm willing to pitch in as well. Unless someone has an app that works on honeycomb.

I am talking to DA_G who makes skyrocket kernels, as well as the guys at the jetstream rooting forum so we will see how far we get...
main issue is just finding a root exploit for honeycomb.
Hi Guys,
Status update. Have some good work going on with Da_G. Will need some brave people shortly.
Love this Tab so far but wishing we had a root. I know that Geohot's rooted the 12.2 Pro, but now that he works Google, I doubt this one is going to get rooted by him.
I know Chainfire does a lot of roots for Samsung, but I don't think he has done any ATT products because of our wonderful locked bootloader.
Anybody have some insight on thinking if this will be rooted or not in the future?
Thanks
this!!! I check these forums several times a day, religiously, hoping for news for an att root... fingers crossed bro

I really wish that this could be rooted. I am finding that this is already quite laggy and I really want to put most of my apps on my SD card.
I'm waiting on the sprint tab s 10.5 root, I heard someone say if you can get the original recovery.img file (or something similar to that...I can't remember everything exactly) and send it to chainfire he can root it for you. I've been trying to figure out how to do it on mine but I suck when it comes to sdk & adb.

Knowing AT&T though I would say February 2015...
Actually, Lollipop is proving harder to crack for root access than our phones very own bootloader. I hate to say this but rooted users may be behind stock for the first time ever in just a few short months.
As long as I still have root, I'll be OK staying on KitKat. I'm not going to assume Lollipop will be rooted until it happens. They're making these phones and operating systems harder and harder to root, until one day there will only be development phones which will have root.

If this was the mindset of of programmers and hackers there would never be a rooted phone. It doesn't matter how hard android tries to stop it there will always be a way found to get around it plain and simple. It's why the security industry is making billions every year. There is not a single device on the planet that is fully capable of being 100% secure. And there never will be a device made like this as long as humans continue to make the devices. Artificial Intelligence may be able to do it one day.

I don't disagree with you, but users are starting to steer clear of devices that are difficult to root. Just look at the at&t note 4. Not even a hint of root and very little developer interest. People would rather just get the t-mobile version. Samsung and at&t seem to be a bad combination for people who want to root and ROM moving forward. Unless we get a developer edition like Verizon.

I'm honestly looking forward to getting rid of my S5. It's a nice phone, but I love the pure google feel like my Nexus 7 has. I'll be upgrading to a Nexus 6 soon. The touchwiz is just ugly, and I certainly don't want a bloated unrootable version of lollipop. The development for this phone is dead, no updates for months now. I'm a flashaholic so I'm absolutely bored out of my mind. If it wasn't for the messed up proximity sensor on the S4 I have I'd probably be using that and flashing like crazy.
When I spoke to an AT&T rep yesterday, they were saying that AT&T has Lollipop and they are modifying it for our devices, with a tentative release date of Feb 2015...
We'll see how much that holds water.
I would be shocked if Lollipop could push anything that'd make me risk giving up just a rooted KK.

I completely agree with your statement. Honestly, I really am considering selling my S5 and getting something else.
I am honestly thinking about jumping ship from at&t all together and going to t-mobile as they don't have bootloaders locked down on their devices yet, plus I think their data plans and what not are better than at&t's current plans. The only issue I have with t-mobile is they don't have quite the selection of Android devices available that at&t does.

I actually never used symbian. Some how samsung keeps sucking me in with the next phone or watch so I've given up root for now. I'm using the note edge just to try something different and it is pretty complete with out root. But the developers always make samsung ROMs smoother.

Rumor is Verizon s5 has lollipop on the way out.
This place is dead. Generic S6 forum is not much better. We have root, but nobody is doing anything with it.
Yeah.. it's seriously making me think of switching devices. I'm used to many custom roms, unlocked bootloaders, xposed, etc.. and this isn't cutting it for me. Sure, great device but.. I'm just not feeling it.
What is it you are wanting? We have cleanrom and a few other debated options and an available framework to let you customize the crazy outta your touchwiz. As far as AOSP or CM, give it time. It's a new device, a lot of hands are on it and after some time, more options will be available. When I bought my G2 on release day, it was a month before root and another before good rom options showed up and even longer before stable rom options we're brought to the table.

I don't understand why people buy a phone like this an expect a ton of development on it. Everyone knows AT&T locks bootloaders so there will be no AOSP ROMS for this device, especially with it packing an exynos processor. The root exploit has been patched in 5.1.1 so don't expect root unless you plan on tripping KNOX or never upgrading again. People really need to do research before they go out and buy a phone. If you need that much development, buy a nexus.

Exactly. I knew this going into getting another ATT phone (Active). It was either getting a phone I knew would work out of the box or getting a toaster oven with an 810 SOC. HTC and LG both failed this year IMHO and OPO2 will also be throttling back the 810 2.1 SOC. I wanted the active because of the bigger battery, but if those wanted ROMs on a S6 they should have just bought an international model outright.
I bought this phone expecting no development. The fact there's even root and roms for it is more than enough for me.

I went from a Nexus 5 (chronic flasher) to a no root Note 4 (now obviously s6) and I discovered that not having root or a million roms to flash caused almost zero issues. Having root and debloated roms on the s6 makes me completely happy. I just flashed XtraStoLite and it's awesome, even more customization and you choose only Samsung apps you want.
I haven't even rooted yet. Works fine for me. First phone I didn't root right away.

Probably the built in themer.
For everyone: when you buy a phone with a locked bootloader, you buy a phone that will have very limited development support (if a hack is found all the better, but don't count on one being found, they ain't easy to find). If you buy a Lamborghini are you going to complain you can't put the turbo you saw on your friends Mazda on it?

Alliance Framework and soon 3minit. You just need to flash a deodex ROM and to top it off, we are now seeing that you can flash roms from the international thread. I will attempt this myself 4th of July weekend and post videos on my channel if successful.
Honestly I think it's quickly getting to the point where rooting will be an afterthought. I rooted my S6 Edge and flashed back to stock within a week.

So I can Flash the deodexed ROM linked earlier with Flashfire then add the alliance framework with flashfire too? Still Kinda new to this(Had the s4 rooted and never flashed anything till after getting the s5 which was rooted with a custom ROM) and it seems like its a different method every phone. Im trying to read up on the different threads but dont have much time usually. Need to take a day and figure it out. Thanks for the help.
I'm not asking for cm or aosp (neither appeal to me), and neither do i want some shoddy kludged together community rom.
What I'd like is to see something like Xposed,,which works without issue on a completely stock+root install.
I've been doing this since the G1 days, and i just dont have the time or patience for it anymore. I have a hobby that to me, is far more satisfying and fun than jacking around with phones.
All i really want is to remove the volume warning and the redundant wifi notification.

Xposed is in alpha or pre alpha for TW devices. So it is in the works, just a ton of bugs and the install is pretty in depth at the moment.
Don't know about the volume warning, but the WiFi notification is easy if rooted. Get the CSC editor and search for WiFi. Blank this value and reboot.

I have up on roms (TW or AOSP/CM) based a long time ago due to glitches and bugs. The last thing I ever did with root was adaway but now many all developers and websites are getting content past adaway and ABP, so no point there even.
I had a problem with my Tab S not taking the lollipop update after rooting then un-rooting which kind of soured me it in general. I got it flashed back to stock at bestbuy and updated, but settings menu still shows status as Custom even though download mode shows Knox 0x0
Howdy folks! I'd like to ask all of you SGS6 Edge users for your opinions regarding the "worthiness" of retaining root vs updating. For the TLDR please go to the bottom! :good:
I used to be super active on here, making small tweaks/apps for people all starting around the Droid Bionic ... so lets just say I'm not stranger to the world of root/customization.
With that being said, since the peak of my crack-flashing habit during the days of the Galaxy S3 I have slowed down quite a bit. Part of that is my own life (I'm older, have way more responsibility at home)...but I believe a much larger factor has been locked phones and a quieter development scene (at least with Samsung devices).
I've had my Edge rooted since the root became available - and I suppose I mostly use it to access the file system, remove bloat, and run the occasional "root only" app.
In the time that I've been rooted on OE2 (running CleanROM 1.5) there have been a few rather large updates to the phone's software both aimed at fixing issues and adding features. As I'm sure I don't need to remind anyone, root hasn't been attained for these new releases .. and I'm somewhat skeptical that it ever will as this device becomes "older".
SO the TLDR here is:
How many of you who HAD their Edge rooted decided to give up root to update their device? Was it worth it to you? Would you do it again if you had the chance, or would you have just kept root?
I updated and I wouldn't go back. Sure I miss the ad blocking and some other fun stuff, but the phone is so much more stable and usable after the updates. If you don't use root for much (which I didn't considering we never got Xposed anyway) I'd recommend doing the update, personally. I followed basically the same path as you. I flashed a new ROM or kernel basically daily on my S3, and have slowly felt more of a need for a more usable phone than being able to tweak it beyond recognition. If you're anything like I am now, you'll appreciate the stability that upgrading brings.

I'm definitely leaning in that direction. I think a big part of it is literally mental/mind over matter ... just knowing my phone is more my phone and less Verizon's certainly makes an impact.
I updated as well, the phone is running better I think. I do miss ad blocking and tb. Being able to disable apps is helpful. Sometimes I wish I wouldn't have but for the most part I'm happy with it. I hate that Verizon is making us make this decision. The struggle is real!

I was a hardcore Samsung user until the Note 3/S4 when root became more difficult to obtain and keep (updating). I even bought a Developer S5 so I could crack flash. As of late, the Galaxy line and development (for Verizon at least) is dead. If you want root/development on Verizon ditch the S6E and get a MXP. You can sell your used phone for about what a brand new unlocked Moto X Pure will cost you....unlockable bootloader, development, and a sd card.
I wouldn't buy a computer without administrative rights and I won't buy (and keep) a phone that I can't obtain root on.

Went through the same dilemma. The final straw for me was finding Package Disabler Pro (costs like 2.99) and that allowed me to at least disable the bloatware and remove it to a degree. I was really worried about losing Viper4android, greenify, and adaway. So far using the built in sound equalizer, the ram management improvements, theme store and the adblocker browser have been more then sufficient in maintaining the experience I was used to. Overall 10/10 experience would un-root again.
I was rooted and gave it up to get up to date. Without Xposed there really was not that much important stuff I wanted from root.

Same here. Once I found package disabler I was very happy losing root for the update.

Please I use package disabler, and I ask it to disable bloat ware but I realised most of useful stuffs were also disabled. Can I kindly get a list of stuffs you safely disabled without affecting phone functionality

Can you upload your xml file
Here is my XML. I didn't do an extremely thorough debloat but it gets rid of most of my useless icons and speeds things up a bit. No negative effects from it.

If,,,,with the delays from Samsung, my S6 Edge gets MM I have serious doubts that I will update my phone. I will most likely wait until MM has been proven to be something better enough for me to lose root. However, I am still very shocked that this phone does not have any dev support? I know carriers like Verizon make it hard, if not impossible, to root but c'mon now I know there are devs out there that could crack this but they have either stopped or moved on to paid positions helping find exploits for carriers and manufacturers.
Thanks
I am currently running a rooted edge, which I did right after the phone's release. I will be updating to a non-rooted marshmellow as it has the permissions control, which is what I originally wanted root for.
However I will really miss not having the csv editor as I have been able to tweak the phone a lot due to some stupid samsung decisions.

I did end up giving up root. While there's plenty of things I miss, I have to admit the update has been a very good experience.
I think a lot of devs have moved on to paid positions as network security becomes one of the most lucrative industries out there. I also think carriers put a lot more emphasis on locking down their devices now than they did previously (call me captain obvious on that one..)
If only the bootloader unlock would be leaked like it was for the GS3
How does Tasker work with the unroot MM update? I have so many profiles I do not want to lose in Tasker.
