Having low memory problems? - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had a 4g Moto G and never had issues but I am with the 2014 version, 80% of the time when I press the home button the launcher has to redraw or respring, I've had freezes and lock ups and stuttering.
I don't have any widgets, using stock launcher etc with minimal apps. Anyone else suffering?

No. Working great here.
Install nova launcher and try

No problems. Using nova launcher & beautiful widget clock & weather

yes I have same problem in my moto g 1st gen there is always 400+ ram available but in my moto g 2nd gen only 180+mb ram available and same apps running in background in both phone in 2nd gen I even disable all Motorola apps but same problem.

Well at least its not just me, I really notice it on this phone, On my previous Moto G I found no difference speed wise between it and my old Nexus 4

Anyone know what the Motorola Notification process is? I have 5 of them running using almost 20megs if memory each.

i'm experiencing that too. i usually have 200~250 of ram left

Could the issue be the now default Google Now launcher? Interesting that those on Nova do not have this issue.

I use nova launcher I also have low memory problem

No memory problems.Always 250-400 mb free ram

I don't have any more than I had on my 1st gen Moto G, Less in fact and it never stuttered, this thing is running like it has only 512mb ram

Also having this problem. Always with 200-250 MBs of free memory. It constantly kills music player apps running in the background. And I'm using Nova Launcher.

What could this issue be here? Why is the 2nd g moto g like this and previous versions aren't, You could say thats the way android works, its supposed to used up all the memory etc, its not however supposed to cause stuttering, app closes and launcher resprings all the time.
I moved to Nova launcher and granted the launcher respringing has stopped however it still stutters, last night I counted 8 seconds before it opened the facebook app.

I have this problem too, I come from a 1st gen moto G with gnl and I never had so many ram problems...I can even been playing a game and suddenly closes (not a fc, more like a ram close). When I pause google play music at the lockscreen in a few seconds the app has closed
Idk what to do, just wait for an ota or what?

Motorola probably aren't aware there is a problem with this device so i doubt there will be an OTA

There's already a thread at the Motorola forum.
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/6168839e0e
It seems to be a problem with memory management.

Thanks for pointing that out, at least this shows we are not imagining it and that there is an issue, the question now is what will Motorola do? Probably damn all. I think ebaying this phone might be the easier option.

I guess this is a memory leak problem (kernel). i guess custom kernels will solve the issue and commit the fixes.

Not so sure, I installed the custom kernel on here, 200mb free with only bare min processes running IE Google services etc, You would sware this was a 512mb ram device and it certainly runs like it.

Nexus One Lags & Freezes

I have my nexus one for already a month I been noticing a mayor lags and sometimes freezes when been used. I wanted to know how to fix this lags I'm actually surprise with a 1ghz snapdragon it lags so much, even my hd2 running windows didn't lag as much. I'm running stock froyo no widgets I do have task manager so I do kill my apps often. I don't wanna root the device I always find my self going back to stock. I feel like I'm not using the nexus one to its full potential. thanks
For a start you don't need a task killer. Just let Android manage itself.
As for the lag, i think you just get used to it.
If you have a live wallpaper, turn it off, because that can cause stutter and lags, etc...

Yeah Im not running any animated wall papers or widgets I notice running a bench mark with widgets it gives me a lower score. Before I had facebook & twitter widgets, 2 email accounts and one exchange running so I guess all those accounts syncing was slowing down my phone. also I used 3gb of data I was pretty shocked with out doing any tethering.

Jerky performance problem, is it RAM or too many apps etc?

Hi all,
Was wondering if anyone experience jerky performances.
I have about 10 pages of apps installed mostly games and stock apps.
When I use advance app killer, usually i see stock apps eg. facebook, browser, ebook, etc.. When I kill them all, performance doesn't improve much.
If the 10 pages are the reason, any way to know which is running in background and sucking up resources?
The performance of your Gtab is jerky coz of the apps that run in the background even if you close them they restart.. u cn use startup auditor app to increase performance... if all fails hard reset nd install only required Apps not the apps u don't use but run behind nd eat up RAM nd battery

I was in a similar situation until I last had to factory reset my Tab due to the whole issue with Google Apps Google Accounts not having access to Google Checkout on the Android Market.
Installed over 100 apps on my first day with the Tab (over-excited, I know ), and realized that my Tab started to lag when opening the app drawer. The problem became most apparent when I shut down or rebooted the Tab; it would literally take minutes to boot up, and often it would freeze and force close my launcher several times in a row.
I chalked it down to having too many apps, but later read that many apps start themselves up on boot even if they had no reason to (e.g. Amazon, Aldiko, etc.)
I've since only installed apps that I would really use throughout the day, but would you guys say that so long these apps do not run on startup (say I disable them using the Autostarts app), I can install a hundred or even two hundred apps without the boot up lag?
So there's no way to see which app is running in background and % memory used, similar to windows task manager?
When I use Advanced task killer, are those 'apps shown' considered as background apps or are background apps invisible?
From my RAM manager, I see like 180+ to 200mb out of 400+mb. I think that's the remaining RAM ?
Anyone knows the stock RAM out of the box?
It might be because carriers pre load crap on them
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
Installed the free startup app and found the culprits ... GAMELOFT games. They are huge in size and think they eat up the memory in background/at startup.
After disabling, all back to normal.

Why on earth would you want to detect it by trial and error when there is plenty of apps you can use to find it specifically?

Scrolling Lag

I've seen this problem come up in other recent HTC devices, just thought I'd point it out for the Vivid as well.
I'm running LauncherPro with just a few icons, a low-resolution wallpaper, and no widgets. It runs silky smooth but the only gripe I have is that when opening the app drawer, 3D or standard, there's an incredible amount of stuttering and lagginess. Scrolling is not smooth, either.
The only other instance of crappy scrolling I have found on the phone so far is in GO SMS Pro; scrolling up and down conversations and also in the settings menus shows an apparent amount of lag. Nothing to cry about, but still there.
Otherwise, no performance issues at all on my device. Oh, and my previous complaint about the data speed being almost nonexistent - it's fixed. Turned out the phone was trying to sync all three of my Google accounts at one time.
Try a different Launcher? LauncherPro Might have an inherent flaw with HTC Devices possibly. Give GoLauncher a shot and see if there is any difference.
Yeah, I'll do that now. I personally dislike Go Launcher but I'll try a few others and see how they perform. I don't think a launcher would affect the lag in GO SMS, though.
EDIT: Lag is still present in Go, Zeam, and ADW launchers.
Interesting. Good to know. It is possible I suppose that they are not correctly optimized for the resolution and Screen size. Although if it is having problems with other HTC Devices my only conclusion is that it is because of some sort of Software issue between HTC and Custom Launchers.
Yeah that's all I could think of, how maybe the high resolution has something to do with it. Hopefully, that's right. Then it would just depend upon app makers to update their apps.
I see no lag what so ever on anything on this phone...
maybe ya got a bad unit?
Are you using GO SMS or any other launchers besides Sense?
This whole rom is slow in comparison to how my inspire rom runs....sad....but thats at&t for [email protected] software. But as soon as we have root,Ill be cooking my own for this, until then it can sit in the box...lol
WC
I have the lag you speak of and its driving me up the wall. Why did I give up my galaxy s2
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk
Calm down, it's not such a big deal. It could because of the greater resolution, much higher than the Samsungs. Not a hundred percent sure, but really. People need to stop being so nit picky and judgmental. It's a phone. In this world, they ALL have their quirks.
No lag what so ever here. Running Launcher Pro Paid Edition. I have 3 homescreens with 4 Columns and 5 Rows, and have 4 Widgets. 3D App Drawer with 5 columns.
Tried ADW EX and Go Launcher and found no lag present as well.
Once a debloated Rom is released everything will be resolved. But for me, haven't had any lag what so ever.
Hm. I wonder if the paid version would make any difference on my device. No lag in the drawer at all? What about in downloaded apps when scrolling?
No problem with anything on launcher. Smooth to me. I've came from an Atrix, Infuse, Inspire, SGS2 and notice no difference. So I've had my share to compare to.
I like the paid version because of the resizable Widgets.
I wonder then, what could be causing it on my phone..
I just tried the latest ics launcher, wow, the first few were kinda sluggish but the latest update is a breeze. There is no lag what so ever and the apps even open instantly with this launcher. I think ics luancher installs itself in a different way, i dont know why but it is smooth as butter.

I just downloaded the new ICS Launcher as well. Seems they've updated it really recently because I tried it on Monday and it wasn't nearly this smooth. Drawer fly-in is amazing, but now the scrolling through the apps is laggy. The changelog did say it was completely rebuilt.
Maybe it's a memory thing? LauncherPro was the very first thing I ever installed on the phone out of the box, and I think I recall that before I installed any other apps, it was running flawlessly.. low memory maybe, but I only have like 10 other apps installed. I'm back to LP for now since I don't really mind the drawer lag that much. I just switched to the 3D version and fly-in is working fine, but now it's the scrolling that lags more than the regular drawer does lol. Can't win.
I know it sounds silly but it could be something as simple as an app icon causing the lag. I had installed something from the market and I noticed lag (this was on my Inspire) and after I uninstalled the app it went back to normal. I reinstalled the app and froze it with TiBu and the lag was still gone... unfroze and lag was back.
YMMV

Yeah I believe you, good point. I'm just going to go through deleting some apps and see if any of them are the problem.
UPDATE: Alright, I just did a factory reset on the phone. As soon as it booted up, I added my primary Gmail account. I went to the Market then closed it so it would update. Meanwhile, I synced my Google contacts, Gmail, and calendar. When that was done, I went back to the Market and downloaded GO SMS - the scrolling lag there still persists. Then, I downloaded LauncherPro (unpaid) and went through opening and exiting the app drawer multiple times - seems the lag is gone. Every now and then, opening it will show some stuttering, as will closing. But it's not every single time like it was before the reset. Perhaps it was something to do with memory? It does not lag on scrolling at all, only during fly-in and fly-out.
UPDATE 2: Never mind. Now that I have changed the default number of homescreens from 3 to 5, it lags every time on opening and closing. Just not on scrolling, yet.

[Q] need to stop walkman getting killed

hey mates, many times i see walkman stops playing, i think it is just getting killed for low memory? in that case is there any tweak i can apply to tell android i don't want walkman getting killed? i guess there's some tweak involving editing of build.prop?? :crying:
The build prop edit doesn't work. Get system tuner and set custom ram kill values or else get ram manager and select high multitasking.
Sent from my C5302 using Tapatalk 2
can't get it, bro? how to do it using sys tuner can u plz elaborate the process?
I can't think it will be low memory - the SP has plenty of RAM to run JB and some serious multi-tasking.
I imagine it's an incompatible app or some setting that has been changed.
From past experience I know that some custom kernels with a deep sleep profile can be very agressive (killing background processes) when the screen is off.

no bro, it kills walkman when screen is on, usually when i use chrome to do a lot of surfing. anyways i have installed supercharger script!! :victory: let's see if it solves the problem.
I have the issue of the Sound effects of the Walkman geting killed off if I do some serious facebooking or G+'ing on the phone. The Walkman app itself still works, however the sound effects app gets killed and there's no way to get it back except a reboot.
Killing and restarting Walkman doesn't help.

Well I've only had the SP for 6 days, so haven't really put it through it's paces. I think I read somewhere that the default out of memory app killer is set at 200mb which is probably too conservative. Even so for it to kill an in use process rather than a cached one does suggest a bug of some kind.
I came from a phone with 512MB ram - so far the SP is exceeding my expectations (especially when it comes to multi tasking). Of course facebook is a bloated app that doesn't seem especially well optimised for android, I try to avoid it - it's possible that apps that cache a lot of media might cause trouble?
i have installed supercharger script and it seems to resolve this error.
I know this is a bit of an old thread but I'm having a similar, and at times worse problem. I also think the default task killer has some bug or something because it kills the walkman app every now and then while I'm listening to music. I installed the Xposed framework and the App Settings module to set some apps to be 'Residents' and that has worked very well with some apps. The really big problem is that, there are times where the phone literally closes an app that I'm currently using while it's still visible, I've had Chrome close on me very often and sometimes the keyboard doesn't appear when I want to write something, which makes me believe that somehow the keyboard app/service was killed. I'm hoping that if CM or some other custom ROM gets released, it'll have better memory management, but for the time being, is there any way I can quarantine a Sony service or app to stop this from happening so often?
I am using the latest .245 firmware, rooted and with unlocked bootloader, and I've never installed any third-party task manager/killer. I'm pretty sure it's not that I'm running out of RAM because I usually have around 200MB free, sometimes a lot more.

I've had a similar issue with the Xperia T. Listening to music through Bluetooth, and browsing using the stock android browser (not chrome), the music used to stop and it would loose the stopping point and reopening walkman shows the music as if after its been refreshed. Posted on Sony forums, to which I was asked to repair the phone and didnt seem to slove it.
Only change that happened was I stopped using the two of them simultaneously for a longer period of time
Btw, this was on the original ICS fw, for Xperia T. Can't comment on it on JB as I havent put it through the same scenario.
But RAM used to be around 667MB when on ICS and ~800MB for JB on Xperia T

Its not about which player you are using.
Its the OOM groupings that are a little f-ed up in SP. This happens with Pandora and Spotify for that matter too..
Well nevermind what I said, if anything something seems a little worse now, my launcher keeps randomly crashing and I'm getting a constant weird notification about a failed bugreport. Supercharger scripts says that everything is working 100% but I think somehow the phone is still managing to kill its services. It's driving me a little crazy and I'm not sure what to try, I'd reflash the stock ROM and start from scratch but it didn't work well before, that's why I started installing other apps...

Ok I might give it a try but there's one specific thing that's driving me insane. I've already installed Xposed framework, V6 Supercharger and Crossbreeder. They all seem to be working correctly and some things work fine, but my keyboard keeps disappearing very very often. I don't know why, I click on a textbox to write something and as I start typing they keyboard just goes away and doesn't come back for a while, I don't even know why or if it has anything to do with RAM (which I doubt). I'm using the Kii Keyboard from the Play Store and I've bulletproofed it with the Supercharger scripts, and it does appear with an OOM priority of -17. I've tried reinstalling and also using the default Xperia keyboard, but it keeps happening.
Any input is appreciated, or if someone knows a way to maybe make a log or something to identify the culprit.
It gets killed. Happens seldom with my SwiftKey.

Going very slow - especially returning to desktop

Having problems with my phone a good few months after I updated to L. After initial problems I wiped the cache after update and it made a great difference and behaved nicely.
But now it seems to have gotten very sluggish and a cache wipe makes only a very short term difference (maybe a few days to a week). It seems especially sluggish responding to Home button, with the icons for phone, SMS etc. sometimes taking up a good 10s, maybe even more, to appear.
I have 1.36GB storage free and c.283MB of RAM free currently.
Any ideas or any apps that can help diagnose?

It could be a RAM problem. If you have root try greenifying some apps, and perhaps deativate Google Now or always listening options. Try also other launcher, like Nova Launcher...

Some apps don't work with root. For example Banking apps. So there are at least 1 reason to not install a custom ROM.
Get rid of Xposed, Facebook and Facebook messenger. Use the mobile version of them.
See if there's too many apps running in background. You barelly have 1.5 GB of free space, so i assume you've plenty of apps installed. Also try to Uninstall Updates and Disable some of them under Settings > Application. You can reclaim some space and get rid of bloat.
