Droid turbo wireless issue (Cisco wlc) - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

I don't know how many of you this would apply to, but if you're having trouble connecting to your wpa2-psk wlans, you'll need to use tkip encryption only.

Are you saying it won't connect to a network using AES? TKIP is for WPA, and AES is for WPA2.

Yep, that's what I'm saying. I know TKIP is for WPA, but on Cisco WLC's you can use TKIP as a backward compatible encryption method in the WPA2 encryption parameters. AES is a problem. When I'm at work, I can't connect to the PEAP network which we use for BYOD, and it is configured to do AES only.
As soon as I configured my home Cisco WLC to use TKIP only, it connected fine. It's something to do with the key exchange. The phone kicks it back and ultimately the WLC will exclude it.

Do you know of any other phones that have this problem? I know most people don't have the luxury of changing their corporate Wireless security.
Sent from my Droid Turbo

I don't, sorry. I'm thinking there's a problem with the wireless software on the phone, but I don't know enough about the phone hardware/drivers to make an inference.
How would I bring this to the attention of verizon or Motorola? Anyone know?

Change
Is this a change that has to be done on the actual router ? Or something that can be done on the Droid Turbo itself. I , too, am having a very hard time connecting to the Wifi at work

Likewise. It's extremely annoying.

Wait a second. Which WLC version are you running? Which model of AP? Is this a WLC-only setup or do you use ISE/WCS/NCS as well?
I'm thinking your WLC (& lightweight AP IOS) might need an update.

At home I'm running a 2112 WLC and a mix between 1242 and 1131 AP's. I was running 7.0.116 at the time. I upgraded the controller to 7.0.250 and put the setting back to AES only and the Turbo connected fine. There is a Cisco bug in 116 - forums. motorola. com /comment/826037 Hence the upgrade.
You'll have to build the link yourself, xda doesn't trust me yet :'-(
There is still a problem at work, however. That infrastructure is running on 5500 series WLC and code 7.6.130 (latest available in train before 8.0 major release). We shut off .11ac a while back due to some firmware issues with Lenovo NIC's. We have MFP Client protection (Cisco's iteration of 802.11w) set as optional, as it should be. Could be that there's a bug present in that code as well. I'm going to have someone put in a TAC case for it and see what turns up.
Making 802.11w mandatory on devices that support ac and forcing it over a/b/g/n seems like it's going to cause a lot of problems for folks running older infrastructure. Although since networking is Cisco's business, you'd think this wouldn't be an issue.

I'm running 8.0 code here with no issues. I'd try that - I've had many issues with 7.6 code... 8.0 seems scary but so far so good here.
I don't have a Droid Turbo but I do have a 1st-gen Moto X that had issues on earlier 7.6 code. I primarily use 3602's around here though, should be getting 3700s soon.

So, I have to admit that I didn't investigate this issue at work as aggressively as I did at home. I committed an IT troubleshooting sin and assumed that I was dealing with the exact same symptoms in both environments. I apologize for that.
Nevertheless, I did some more troubleshooting and noticed that when using 802.1x EAP-PEAP authentication (we're using ISE and AD-credentials for BYOD), you'll need to prepend your domain to your username (thusly: domain\username) when entering your credentials into the phone. If you don't, ISE can't determine what identity store to look in to authenticate you. I imagine this is an issue within the supplicant. It acts an awful lot like the supplicant is prepending the '\' character to the username.
I've only experienced this issue with the Droid Turbo. My OG MotoX didn't have this problem and my coworker's Nexus 6 isn't experiencing it either. (i.e. neither phone required 'domain\username' as just 'username' would suffice).

Interesting. Perhaps the 2 devices use different supplicant parameters... I've had to use the DOMAIN\user login before on my XT1058 though.
Very interesting - wonder if logcat has anything to say about the differences in the authentication process.

very, very annoying
why would Motorola put out a phone that as these setbacks....not good "customer relations" at all.
why is it that with my small Droid Mini, I could do everything I needed to do ( use data while on a call, and connect to any wireless spot ) , and now , here I think I am "UPGRADING" ....and these mess takes place ........this is such a "microsoft" move it doesn't make sense !
Does anyone know the ACTUAL DATE of when this so called "update" for the Droid Turbo is suppose to take place ?

Keep in mind these are considered consumer devices, not enterprise-grade (e.g. Motorola Solutions). Wi-Fi performance is much better on those devices (TC55, MC40, etc)

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Wifi problems with actiontec Fios router

Anyone else having trouble using the internet over wifi (wep & wpa) with the actiontec router that comes with Verizon fios? I can ping the G1 and telnet into it. Just can't use the browser. I am able to connect to other WPA encrypted routers and everything works great. This problem existed on rc19 and continues on rc30.
Thanks for any help.

Was the first thing i tried.
I don't have one yet (it is coming December 13th HAHA) But can you two compare firmware versions? Maybe you need to update that... or maybe there is a setting that is preventing the phone from getting to the net. It sounds more like a setting on the router than the phone.
I would check DNS settings and make sure all works well... Can other wifi devices connect to the net?
Same here, 4.0.16.1.56.0.10.7.
Have also tried static and dynamic ip's. My daughters DS and computer are connected via wifi. Next I'll try turning UPnP on.
Thanks for everyone's help.
Edit: UPnP is a no go. I don't want to do a factory reset but, looks like I'm headed that way.
have the same problem
what did you end up doing?
tried it
didnt work...
I have fios myself and the wifi portion of the Actiontec router is craptacular. I've had all sorts of compatibility problems with various wifi cards. I have replaced the primary router with a .N aftermarket one and hooked up the Actiontec as a regular client so the TV cable boxes can still get programming updates. Naturally, I turned off the wifi on the actiontec.
So its basically like this:
Actiontec -> D-Link N (or whatever you want) -> Internet
If you go down this route you just have to make sure whatever router you make your primary is not on the same private network. Actiontec uses 192.168.1.X. I've had no problems since switching to a higher end router. Also, you can clone your mac address from the actiontec or call verizon and have them reset your DHCP lease. They know the drill.
I have FIOS with the newer Westell routers and the wifi sucks on them as well. I got a belkin and use it as a wifi expansion. So it uses the same IP as the router but just adds a wifi network. Pretty neat if you ask me.
so i think may have found a solution that may work for you (it worked perfectly for me). what i did was switch my security to WPA2 and left the encryption standard to AES only as a pose to TKIP+AES. I also reset the router before this but im sure you dont have to do that. let me know if this works.

Could you be kind and give us more details of exactly how you connected and setup the belkin router to improve the wifi? My FiOS wlan also sucks and Verizon tech support is useless.

Bionic Reboots Any Wireless N Router???

I have an EnGenius ESR-9850 wireless N router with B+G+N turned on and auto WPA2 encryption. I can connect all of wireless devices(laptops, bluray, tv, iPhone, Xbox, etc) but not my Bionic. About 10 seconds after I attempt to connect to the EnGenius it will actually REBOOT the router! I've tried turning all the encryption off and only using N instead of B+G+N and still the same thing. Then I found that if I just use B + G it works fine. I've tested this on three different model routers and have the same result.
So in conclusion it seems my Bionic dominates any router that has wireless N turned on and reboots them. I guess it really does control all machines, just not in the way I'd like...
Anyone else having this issue???
I'm not having any trouble whatsoever with my Linksys.
I'm not even sure how a connection being initiated would cause a reboot unless there was something wrong with the router.

What model Linksys please? I may have to look into getting one. So far I've tried two different model EnGenius, BEC, and a D-Link. If I get some time this afternoon I'll try to go through the logs on these routers and see what they say. May be a clue to whats going on somewhere in there.

No... The issue where these guys are getting their Bionic to reboot routers are all id10t errors. I've never even seen a device restart (except an Android) just because a connection was made to something. Also look at the brand. EnGenius, guys, really? Problem exists because user bought no name hardware. That statement almost includes D-Link as well.

I'm sure there are a ton of things that happen every day you've never seen, doesn't mean they don't happen or aren't true. And I didn't buy either of those pieces of equipment, they were provided by my ISP. Don't appreciate you calling me an idiot either.
Anyways...I did some more testing and I couldn't get the Dlink to do it any more, maybe I got confused about that one. I did test two other EnGenius routers and it still happens with them. I've since been given an Asus router that has wireless N and it's working great! So this just seems to be a glitch with EnGenius routers. Besides this one weird glitch it was a great router.
You are not crazy! My Bionic connects to my D-Link access point and it doesn't reboot the router, but it locks up Internet traffic on all other connected devices and will never connect itself, even though it receives a valid IP address. Same thing occurred with my X, but not my Sammy Charge so it is something particular to moto hardware.
Not a huge deal for me cause I have a Verizon tower less than a mile from my house.
When I get time, I will dig through my access points logfiles.

I did not call you an idiot sir. Just because someone makes an id10t error does not mean they are an idiot. Just means they goofed and I'm sorry you felt that way about my statement.
As far as the EnGenius routers go, are there any awkward default settings on the routers? Maybe a weird default mtu, or something along the lines of an awkward security measure? Just trying to fuel the solution train. Enjoy your day.

Bionic and Wireless N
Linksys WRT160N
The Bionic would connect to the router then not pass any data. I changed the router mode from mixed bgn to mixed bg and the issue was resolved. I was able to connect and get data on bg.
I have a lot of problems connecting to my n router with a secondary g router in the house.
They both have the ssid hidden and the n router is behind a ISA firewall and has the IP address assigned by windows server 2008 r2's dhcp server with a static address assigned to the Mac address.
I do admit that this is a very intricate setup but fail to see why the phone makes the ssid disappear after one connection.

iv'e seen this before, in fact i have a router that does this, it does it with my bionic, and my wife's laptop... it can go a few days, or 5 minutes and then poof reboot, had to move the wife's laptop to another router that didn't crash like that, my main router that crashes is a WHR-HP-GN running the latest brainslayer build of dd-wrt while the one that doesn't crash is a netgear WNR3500L samknows edition... i don't have a fix for it sorry. but maybe you can rest easier knowing that you aren't completely insane, oh btw, thanks a lot, my router had been doing its thing and i didn't know why, i guess i hadn't put that together yet... oh its not crashing either, its just the wifi is dropping it should come back after a little while, and wired shouldn't have any issues.. that's how it goes with dd-wrt installed anyhow.
i bet all of like 5 people have ever even seen that happen before... i have *no* idea why it does that or how its even possible.

[Q] Way to make wifi connect automatically?

I'm not sure if anyone else is having this problem, but after my phone has been on standby, the wifi disconnects. I assume this is normal, battery-saving behavior. The problem is when I wake the phone up, it's hit-or-miss in that it doesn't connect back up all the time. Sometimes, it'll connect without user intervention. Most of the time though, I'll need to pull down the menu and select the "wireless networks found" notication to bring up wifi settings (connects as soon as the settings comes up). This has not happened with any other android phone I've owned... just the Bionic.
I'm still running the stock ROM, though rooted. I'm considering putting DroidTheory's deblurred on, but the phone actually behaves pretty well, so I haven't yet.

Go into wifi settings and click the menu button and advanced settings. I would change your wifi settings so that wifi never sleeps. You will actually save more battery life being on wifi then having your cellular radio on. Just turn off wifi if you leave your house or place where you use a wifi connection.
Try "Y5"
It'll turn your wifi off when you have no remembered wifi in the area. I believe it works by cell site recognition.
HINT: When you are configuring a new protected/secured wifi turn Y5 off until you have the passkey typed in to make sure the phone leaves wifi turned on enough time for you to enter the key.

The problem with this phone is that the radio stays on when on wifi. If you really want to save battery, flip on airplane mode THEN wifi.

I tried everything here and non of it worked, plus making sure "USE PROXY SERVER" was unchecked and, it still didn't work.
So I got to thinking about what type encryption I was using on my router. I knew I was using "WPA" just didn't know which one.
Opened router settings and, it was set to "WPA2 Personal" set it to "WPA Personal" with same password and, my WiFi has been working ever since I did this.
Hope it stays this way!
I guess this phone wasn't meant to connect to WPA2 Personal connections. Can someone confirm this to be true?
I hope this helps someone out.....
I have 3 Apple routers with WPA2 and the Bionic works fine with them. Also on a Netgear high-end router with WPA2.
Geek stuff coming:
If WPA is what works, that's great. WPA2 is preferable, but only because there is a weird and esoteric possibility of capturing a WPA passcode using the TKIP encryption used by WPA (WPA2 uses AES encryption, or, technically, CCMP). However, if you go into the router's settings and change the WPA group key timeout (or it may be called WPA group rekey interval) to faster than 11 minutes, that will prevent that exploit from happening. (Changing to WPA with AES as opposed to TKIP would also be fine, if the router supports it. However, that may have been what was causing your issue with WPA2, so...)
(If you are interested in reading a technical article about the TKIP exploit, it's here: http://arstechnica.com/security/news/2008/11/wpa-cracked.ars )

UPDATE:
After further investigating the settings on my Linksys WRT160n w/DD-WRT firmware. I saw that it has an option to enable TKIP+AES and that was selected.
So I changed it to WPA2 Personal with just AES selected, whola it has worked like this too.

This must be an issue with Android. My Eris would have problems connecting to routers using TKIP+AES, but I figured that this would have been fixed two years later. It's weird that it's not.
Thanks for posting the update. Now at least if somebody else reports a similar issue we can have them check this setting.

Here's a couple things to try that I'm doing and I've had no problems since Day 1 with my Bionic.
If you're using WPA2 use the PSK variant.
Download and install the free WiFi Analyzer from Google market. It's great when dealing with WiFi networks in general-not just your own.
Next look for the Market App 'WiFi Connecter Library' by farproc (it's a helper app-not a stand alone program)and install it. It adds some nice features regarding saving WiFi settings and automatically reconnecting. Since using those I always have Windows-like options for remembering and auto-reconnecting to Access points.
Thanks for all the awesome replies! I had forgotten to enable notifications for the thread, so I didn't even realize anyone replied.

This is great summation of the TKIP exploit. You'd be amazed how many people have no idea how this works. Another thing to point out is that WPA is subject to man-in-the-middle attacks. You can effectively prevent against this by making your WPA passphrase more complex. Personally, I use a short sentence with plenty of special characters.
Here's a good read on MITM attacks in general:
http://www.ab9il.net/wlan-projects/wifi-security2.html
You can test your access point security by using the latest bootable Backtrack distro and any number of guides online.

I'm using WPA2-PSK with AES encryption. I'll definitely look into those apps, though. It would be nice to have wifi turn off when there are no recognized hotspots in the area, as someone mentioned on page one.
Thanks for all of the great tips. Working better than ever!
Ever since changing the sleep setting under "advanced", I've had absolutely no problems. Battery life is much better, too. Thanks!!!
Y5 is the one of the best tips here..
It will turn your wifi off when you aren't in a known area.

Chromecast Unable to Connect to Network

Hey all. New poster long time lurker. I just wanna thank everyone in advance for all the help I've gotten over the years.
Anyway. I own a chromecast and am attempting to connect it to my home wifi network. I'm using a mi424wr-gen3i router with the latest firmware. I disabled IGMP and UPNP is enabled. I turned on IPv6 like some other posters mentioned. My phone (Bionic) gets to the set up page, sees the chromecast but fails at one of two points. Either it says it cannot communicate with the device or it gets to the point of connecting the chromecast to the network and fails. My network is using a WPA2 security key. As far as I can tell my router is not a dual band and only transmits at 2.4ghz. The chrome support mentions something about Access Point/ Client Isolation, but I have no idea what that is or how to configure it. I called both Verizon and Google. Google said check upnp and 2.4 ghz. Verizon said its not their problem.
I was following this thread which seemed to be point on, on my issue. However where other people seemed to make it work, mine still fails.

Have you tried rebooting your router, disable MAC address filtering if it is enabled, and/or reset the router's settings back to default

Yeah. I rebooted to the factory reset. Unfortunately its a verizon issued modem/router combo and its to their specs. MAC filtering is disabled and its been rebooted.
Get the latest router from Verizon & turn off IGMP. Swapping out the router should be free.

I was having a similar problem but I realized that Chromecast only needs the network name and it's password to work. After the step were you put in the password and it fails, I should work..Also, if you are getting stuck renaming chromecast, leave it the way it is for now. Before you start over, check to see if you can see chromecast on you network using Fing or a similar program.

I have had same issue and fixed it by doing a MANUAL entry of all wireless connection to your router... type in SSID, pick WPA2, and enter passcode.
Well after several hours of talking with Google and Verizon again. Verizon hung up on me and Google solved the problem. Apparantly my phone (Droid Bionic) is not communicating with the device properly. Off all things i was able to set it up with my buddies IPAD. Ironic right? Now I just need to figure out what the heck is wrong with my phone. I read somewhere that the razrs were having problems. The Bionic and Razr are one in the same so i guess ill head that way. Anyway thanks guys.

It's always a good idea to try different devices when possible. Adding the Google Cast extension on Chrome for the PC may be the easiest to work with since you're using a full keyboard.
I had to manuilly allow my chromecasts Mac address... Then it worked no problem.

My wife's razr had the same issue. You could have also used your PC to set it up.
Here is the thread on the Razr / Bionic issue: groups.google.com/d/msgid/chromebook-central/1280fb6a-d063-4d77-993d-dbec4fc6cdb6%40googlegroups.com (sorry, you have to copy/paste it, I have less than 10 posts so I can't post links yet).
Play Music and Play Movies/TV probably won't work for you either.
Just hit Try Again and it will work. It fails the first time, and hitting Try Again did the trick.
Not sure if it was luck or what not.

Issues with new TWC modem/router

Hi all, while thinking that faster internet would be a good thing, it seems that I have managed to break chromecast compatibility with my network. Previously I had a Netgear router that worked perfectly, but when we got an upgrade to TWC's new "Extreme Internet" they installed a new WiFi router/modem hybrid that I cannot seem to connect to. I get the message that it is connected to the network but not the internet. Ap isolation. Is disabled, but I cannot find the plug and play feature anywhere in the network settings. Has anyone found a work around?

If you can give us the exact make and model we might be able to help more.
BTW, TWC changed their policy a few years back and now allow approved customer-owned modems which will save you the modem rental. They used to not charge for the modem rental but also not let you use your own. Installed a Motorola SB6141 for my relative and it's been working great with the Netgear WNDR3700 I put there.
No Chromecast yet because I haven't been by to visit...
You could always use your own modem with twc, just that most people did not know that. Like previously mentioned, more details are needed in order to further assist you. Make and model(tg862g, ddw3611, dvw32011b???). More than likely you just need to call and talk with level 3 tech support. I personally used my own router behind the modem because I do a bit more than normal with my router.

I went through Hell on Christmas Eve with Time Warner....
They have a new Modem/Router they are using....When connected to a personal Router it does a double Nat translation which really doesn't work at all.
Your lucky if you even get Internet access on a Computer with it.
Check your router and see what IP address it has under internet connection. It should not be 192.168.0.x
If it is not an outside IP you need to call support and tell them you need your Router to breach the Modem and have them shut off all ROUTER capability on their Device so that all it does is pass a public IP to whatever is connected to it.
If you get your phone service from Time Warner as well better call on a Cell Phone because they will drop the phone call the second they mess with their Modem/Router and you will suffer through Groundhog day explaining it to the next guy from scratch!
Well guys I solved my own problem in a way. I disabled the wireless broadcast from the TWC Arris router and just connected my old NetGear ( old as in 2 months old) and it seems to work perfectly now. And the installer said, " You won't need to use your old one because this box is like commercial grade bro."

Glad to hear. The wireless modem you have is indeed a great modem and you could use that alone but it is easier to just use your own. The installer more than likely wasn't on the up and up about the more technical aspects of the modem. You can't knock him for that part as the techs are not trained on a lot of the extra features of the modem. I only know this because I may or may not work for the company(need to keep work out of forums).
