[Q] Getting "OK Google" to work from any screen? - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I enable the "OK Google" voice command in the settings, there are usually options to enable the command from any screen, however that option is not present on my Z3c. Any ideas on how to get this to work?
Thanks

QUESTIONS DO NOT BELONG HERE.
That being said, what you ask of is there. go to google search settings, click on voice, go to ok google detection. from there, check from any screen box, and it'll have you repeat ok google 3 times to learn your voice. then on, it's from any screen.

Sorry about the question.
As I stated in the post, the option "from any screen" does not appear on my settings.
This is a picture of the screen I come to in the settings.

is it in English?

Yes, it is.

Hi
You can try setting your phone language to US English and updating the Google Search app. It may appear then.
Alternatively you can download an app called OpenMic+ which may help...

I have the option on my phone and it works...problem is when you enable it the stock camera app sees it as an app that is using the mic all the time and it shows an error. there is currently no fix

Turns out the app needed an update, figured the brand new phone would have the latest update!
Thanks

Just to note, even if the application is updated, if it has never been opened, it still wont offer the option to listen from any screen, unless you run the application at least once.

[Q] Kit kat update broke Google now hotword detection on moto x

I updated my Moto X to kit kat yesterday and now my hotword detection doesn't work on the home screen or within Google now. I have the nexus 5 home launcher installed and fear it could be part of the issue, but it worked fine in jelly bean so I don't know why it wouldn't work here.
Anyone else having this issue?

I can safely say it's not the new home launcher. I've been running that for awhile now and both the motorola detection and the google detection work fine (i.e., I can say "okay google now" at any time, or say "okay google" when the device is already woken.)
I haven't done the kit kat upgrade though

"Ok google now" works as it should.
But when in google now, saying "ok google" does not activate voice control...very strange.

It seems that Moto may have deactivated this on purpose to prevent it from interfering with the Touchless Control feature.
Same thing, it was working shortly after the update I believe.

seems unlikely. i can't seem to get mine to work either, even though Google Now settings say to listen for "Google".
Select the Auto-Update tab from the top and choose one of the auto-update options (we recommend leaving it on “over WiFi-only”). After that, scoot over to the All tab and find English (US). You’ll notice it already says “pre-installed”. Don’t listen to it. Select English (US) anyway. From there, jump to the Installed tab and press “English (US)” where you’ll be asked to download the latest version (version 28 at the time of writing). Hit “Download” and the updated version will be downloaded and installed.
After it’s finished downloading, press the home button where you’ll notice “Ok Google” will now be displayed inside the Google Search widget. Simply speak that phrase whenever you’re on your homescreen to perform a Google Search or voice actions. That’s it. Was relatively painless, ri

Something is definitely broken. The image I included shows Android 4.4 and Android 4.2.2 differences. 4.4 is missing the "Ok" and maybe that is why it doesn't work? It worked fine before and now doesn't. English is my set language and that doesn't fix the problem.
just my 2 cents.

KidCuda,
Orsini has left out some steps. Where is his selecting Auto-Update tab (play store?)? I don't see anything that says "pre-installed". Where are you even looking for 28? I would like to confirm what number I am on.
Thanks.
Even you had 28 Download English language.

He's talking about in Google Now, go to the "Manage downloaded languages" section in settings. I tried this (on my Moto X, even though I'm typing this on a Nexus 7) and it didn't work.
My Nexus 7 just updated to KitKat tonight and doesn't have this problem.

Okay. I was able to update to version 28 and it still does NOT work, but something changed in the settings. See attachment.
I uninstalled the english language pack and reinstalled it to no avail...

Touchless controls issues

1. When I say "find my phone" it returns a Google search for "find my phone" instead of starting the alarm. This happens about 80% of the time.
2. I have disabled the ability to make touchless calls, and I have told it to ask for permission before calling, and still it will make calls without permission. I think it is because it calls through a Google search instead of the dialer.
3. The phone is easy to wake up with "ok Google now", and the first command is almost always recognised but when I say "ok Google now" for a second command it doesn't respond unless I'm very close to the phone and say it very loud.
Am I the only one with these issues?

Go to Touchless Controls->Commands While Locked->and uncheck Place calls and check voicemail without having to unlock phone.
Also go to Confirm before calling and select always ask before placing a call.

It is not flawless but it works pretty good for me.
I've tried both with and without Google now. Location services are enabled.
I've already unchecked place calls and check voicemail and I've enabled always ask before placing a call. But I can still make touchless calls!?

You need to have Google Now on to set things like reminders, but I just tested it and with Google Now off Find My Phone worked fine.
Find My Phone only was enabled in the most recent update v.4.2.02.1. I would uninstall the Touchless Controls app and then download it from the Playstore and reinstall it.
I've now tried reinstalling with the same results.
Maybe it's because my English isn't good enough? Maybe if it can't immediately understand what I'm saying it will instead connect to the Google servers for a better speech recognition? It would explain why it returns a search for "find my phone" and why it bypasses the call permissions in the touchless controls settings (it places the call through Google now instead of the touchless controls app) .

But it is correctly interpreting you saying find my phone. I would call Motorola.
Yes it is, but that could be because Google's servers have better speak recognition than the phone. Have you never tried that it did a google search instead of executing a command?

its called google now. enable it, turn on all the options.. then, when the phones screen is off, unplugged or plugged in, say ok google, and itll wake your device up. if thats not what you meant, the nexus 6 doesnt have any other way to unlock your phone with voice. oh, btw, questions go into the q&a section, not into general.
My google now is enable but I can't see and voice unlock feature on my smart lock list . ?

OK Google - PROBLEMS

I use ok google all the time to send texts especially when driving. frequently i am getting an error where she says
"actually, i can't do that while the device is locked" after unlocking with fingerprint it isn't recognized that the device is unlocked for some reason
it seems to be a MIUI problem as there is a huge thread http://en.miui.com/thread-274084-1-1.html
anyone know a solution?
also, one suggestion from Google is to just turn on Trusted Voice so that you can use the OK Google command when the device is locked. when i turn this on the OK Google command does not work and is not recognized no matter what screen i'm on let alone with the device locked
anyone ran into similar problems with the Mix?
I have a similar issue...If I disable lock pattern and then re-enable it it will work. A bit of hit and miss really. Would love a proper solution if there is one.

Same. I can't get it working from a black screen. My other devices will wake up and "listen". On the Mix, I have to activate the screen and then say ok google for it to listen. I did the resetting the lock screen and it did help get ok google to listen on the lock screen. So thanks for that.
I also have the same problem with the latest Google app but it works with version 4.92.16 except that I'm not able to use ok Google from screen off. I hope there's a solution to this
Not sure if i just haven't used OK Google enough yet, or if it has legit fixed the problem...but after converting google to a system app i have not run into this error yet with over 20 times using OK Google. we will see if it holds up.
did you have this problem before making it system app and went away after?
I figured this out.
Browse to Google App > Settings > Voice > "OK Google Detection" and enable "Personal results"
Kind of a workaround, since this allows actions when your device is locked, but works well for me.
I don't have that option for enable Personal results.
I only have
From the Google App
From Any Screen
Trusted Voice
While Driving
All four are enabled.
personal ressults has always been enable and still no joy.
I don't even have while driving.
Only three options.
I don't think it's a MIUI thing. It happens on my Google Pixel XL with the latest Nougat. Same message.

disable OK google listening

Ok I was able disable the OK google and it only listen when I press the mic icon. Now no matter what I do in the google app settings it's always listening. My only current option is to disable microphone permissions which isn't what I want since I can't press the mic icon and speak.
I had it setup on the note8 with android 9 to only listen when the mic icon is pressed. Got the note 9 did the same settings and it still responds when I say OK or hey google.
Currently have the microphone permissions disabled since my phone does NOT need to listen all the time. Is there a setting I am missing?
I had to remove the Google search widget to stop it from always listening. It is stupid that they removed the option to simply turn it off.

Exactly. Disable the "Google" app improve the memory and battery usage, imo
Interesting, I disabled the Google app for about 30 minutes and could not use voice with chrome so turned it back on. The mic permissions are enabled but OK google is now disabled yet I can push the mic icon and use voice for searching again.
So its exactly how I want it but a very strange way to get there. I have no clue how this worked but it did.
Well after a restart and about 20 minutes it went back to listening.
That's odd - it's definitely off on mine, but I can't find where I deactivated it! I use Nova Launcher, and there is an option in the Settings under 'Gestures and Inputs' to disable 'OK Google hotword' - maybe that's how I did it? But 'OK Google' doesn't work anywhere on my Note 9 (did this to save battery and because I have a Google Home & Mini).
EDIT: And I do have the Google App installed.
Not sure what's going on. Google runs me around when I tired to ask them. I know exactly where the setting is and its disabled but still listens for the "OK google "
Personally I would love someone with influence to get attention to this but it seems a little hit or miss on setups so not sure. I have the mic disabled.
I did do a really stupid test if my device was listening and used let's say red flag words to see if anyone was listening. Ironically the words I used are related to an event happening in my city which was horrible timing on my part but semi proved to me no one heard it.

Yes that works. The only thing I don't want is it to disable voice in chrome app which this does.
The settings to disable OK Google are there but don't function and google themselves either don't understand what I am saying or don't want to admit the setting doesn't function as it should.

It's not easy to find the option to turn off the Google assistant, but it's there.
Settings > apps > (three dots menu) default apps > device assistance app
You'll want to change "device assistance app" to "none" and then "voice input" to "Google". The you should be all set.
To go a step further, you can disable the Google assistant from running at all on your device.
Google app > "more" (lower right hand corner) > settings > Google assistant > assistant
Then, at the bottom you should see "assistant devices" with "phone" listed. Select phone and then toggle Google assistant off.
This should do the trick.

I was able to do the first part of device assistant app to none. The voice input option doesn't allow me to pick just google option.
Either way this has solved my issue and is now working they I want it to. Going to try a restart and see if it persists unlike my previous attempt.
Thanks again for finding this.
I like having the search widget and be able to type or voice input my search if I don't know how to spell something. With all the news of companies admitting they listen and record voice stuff having my device always listening is very unsettling. I guess it's a little paranoid but I live in a bad part of my city and I really don't want to be red flag because I walked by a drug deal which happens all to often.
That's strange, because that exactly what it should do when you disable Voice Match, since it is said that's it's actually the "anywhere OK Google listening".
Try deleting your voice imprint on the same setting page too maybe.
I wonder why is working fine on my phone and not on others.
