Create New Folder in Gallery -> Saved to external SD card. How? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just curious if anyone knows how to change the location of where new folders are saved in gallery to external SD. By default it saves to phones memory.
Settings -> Gallery -> Assuming you've set your default storage location to your external SD card, select your main folder -> On the top of the screen you'll see a "create new Folder" icon. Click that. -> Then you'll be able to select the phones you want to move over to your new folder. -> This folder is saved on your phones storage. Therefore...
My question is, how to change this to where that folder is saved to your EXTERNAL SD card. Because by default it saves it to your devices storage.
I didn't see anything in settings. Does this require a change in code in the build prop?
Thanks
Solutions: Simple solution is to just move the folder from your phones SD using Root Explorer or something and moving it into your external SD. A little extra step, but easy. Or Quickpics ...

[Q] Copy files onto phone while in recovery mode

So I screwed up my Galaxy S by trying to modify the images on framework res.api. The phone won't boot up now.
I can only go into recovery mode. How do I copy the original files to the phone so I don't have to do a full recovery?
Are there other alternative methods I can use?
I am really frustrated now and I hope I won't have to start all over again
The stupid nature of the Samsung Galaxy S recovery is that you have to put the update.zip on the Internal SD. The stock recovery has no way of letting you do this as you don't have root to mount the sdcard when using ADB.
So just go for a full flash... :\
just flash the phone again with Odin, on a good firmware
then you can do whatever you want with it after that.
You don't need to flash again.. the easy way: check the following > http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756627 and download the file for your ROM (if there is no file for your ROM, try with any for your model). Then if you cannot access to the internal SD through the recovery mode... go to the "apply update.zip".. in my case I got an error due to I didn't have any update.zip file BUT then I was able to acces de internal SD, so you can copy the file downloaded and apply it
Sorry for my bad english!
You should be able to create an update.zip with the same folder structure as your phone (/system/framework/) and replace the framework-res.apk with your original working one. Then use your recovery screen to apply this update.zip
Edit: Sorry I just realized you couldn't access your internal sd... dang.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I had to reflash the whole phone with the firmware thus losing all my settings and programs.
The case is I knew what file I messed up. I applied it through the update.zip. And there is no way to access the internal SD card (internal storage) so I cannot change the update.zip to anything else.
So from my understanding, for phones like Galaxy S which has a non removable internal SD card, there is no way, not even with third party software to access the internal storage so the update.zip can be modified and applied through the recovery mode? Sorry I'm still quite a noob after reading hundreds of threads...
If that's the case then it is quite very risky to attempt on any mods and this may not be the phone I want to keep
Is there a way to SWITCH app file saving from INTERNAL SD to EXTERNAL SD? Or at least make Recovery mode use update.zip from EXTERNAL SD? That would be very useful!
Thanks all...

[Q] CM10 External SD Card Not Showing

Hi, I updated my phone with the CM10 nightlies and all is working great so far! I'm still getting used to of the new way of mounting the storage partitions, as now the phone uses primarily the internal storage card, which is better for me.
The problem is, that on some apps I'm having trouble using my SD card.
When I navigate to /storage, most apps don't show up anything (neither sdcard0 nor scard1), but navigating to /sdcard does take me to /storage/sdcard0. This happens even if the app has root access.
Is there any way to change this, or create a link(like /sdcard -> /storage/sdcard0 to /extsdcard -> /storage/sdcard1)
This is what I see on Titanium Backup:

try es file explorer
Try changing the permissions on /storage
I initially had same issue but resolved it by the said method.

I've tried changing permissions to Read Write and Execute for all three groups to Storage but still got no luck. System doesn't allow me to change permissions to sdcard1 directly.
Apollo and Titanium still can't access the external sd. Any other ideas?

This seems to have done it for me. I enabled full read permissions and only owner write, I left execute as is (all checked) and now Titanium can write and read to my external sd, so no more storage woes for me!
Thanks!

It might be that those apps are looking for the external sd in the wrong (old) symlinks. See if the following will help you

If you need the /emmc symbolic link, you can create your own in the terminal:
Code:

mount -o remount,rw /
ln -s /storage/sdcard1 /emmc

FINALLY A SOLUTION!
I recalled reading a RC's post that skipping CM7 could cause issues. Actually, he mentions it in the CM10 launch thread, first post.
So I re-installed a stock ROM, installed CM7 wiped data/cache, installed CM10 wiped dalvik, fixed permissions and now it all runs great!
Let's hope it lasts! If it doesn't all try your idea Aragorn.
Thanks a bunch
if you go to the settings > general settings > advanced > access mode and change it to root access mode it will let you go into your external sd card without having to edit in shortcuts hope it works for everyone :victory:

[Q] Really confused about mount points and device names

I'm really really confused about some concepts of the Android OS mounting system.
What is the "/emmc" path? Is it the internal memory mount point or the external?
What does "/sdcard" represent?
Why are they different when the device is in recovery mode than normal?
Please someone shed some light here.
Thanks.
Different Roms use different mount points. For example internal sd is mounted as /sdcard0 in cm10.1 and external sd as /sdcard1.
Samsung prefers /sdcard as internal and /emmc as external. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.
About the recoveries I don't know. I had a rom which exchanged to internal and external cards in recovery but I don't think that's relevant here
/emmc is embedded multimedia card, so this must be the internal,
/sdcard i believe is also the internal, as it is formatted with a few partitions, space for the /system (ROM) space for the recovery and space for the apps.
i believe they are different in recovery because in recovery it will show its correct name and path (mainly for developers) where as under settings it just shows sdcard because thats what the user will see, and not everyone knows the correct terminology for this so its easier to understand.
then again...what do i know ?? im just making this $hit up lol
Ok.
Let me ask it this way.
How one can know which mount point stands for which hardware entity?

I fail to see why this is different than your previous question ?
Anyways, now you've made me confused too !
For example I'm using Slimbean 4.2.1 beta 1 right now and here's what I found out:
First up, root explorer says the external sdcard is mounted as /extSdCard and the internal (the available internal memory w//o the system partition as azzledazzle pointed out as /sdcard.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
But, Solid explorer says that these two are just links to /sdcard1 for external and /sdcard0 for internal.
As you can see, both are links to /sdcard1 (for external) and /sdcard0 (for internal) respectively. Going to /storage and longpressing on SD card bring it up as mounted under /sdcard1
OI file manager also shows the same results (but unfortunately not the linking part, just that /extSdCard and /storage/sdcard1 are the same place & /sdcard and /storage/sdcard0 are the same.)
The /extSdCard serves no purpose (I think) as MX player ignores it totally.(Don't go for the highlighted fairy tail, there's a folder sdcard1 down the list !)
CWMR uses the /sdcard for external and /emmc for internal.How that comes to be, I've no idea...bcoz according to Root explorer there is no partition such as /emmc although there is /sdcard ,which incidentally, links to internal sdcard as shown above.
I dunno how to take screenshots in CWMR so I can't post the screenshots.(Is that even possible ? I mean, taking screenshots while in CWMR ?)
Can anybody else help us out ?
I really appreciate your input. What I meant by my question was to have concrete way to know what device is mounted where per each ROM.
So according to you there is no organized system in mounting each memory and it's a total mess!

Wait, I just downloaded a Touchwiz ROM.Let me see if there are any differences.....
Okay, now I'm running Slimwizz(or something like that)
Anyways, here is what I got
AnTek Explorer
No /extSdCard present.
/storage/sdcard0------->Internal
/storage/extSdCard---->External
CWMR gives the same results i.e.
/emmc----->Internal
/sdcard---->External
So I gues it can be safely assumed that CWMR is giving consistent results and hence is right ?
Still doesn't explain what use does the /extSdCard link does in AOSP roms.
some kernels have it swapped, be carefull wiping those.

[Q] Now running CM10; questions.

Thanks for verygreens detailed instructions ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032364 ), a sacrificial EEE PC that had Ubuntu thrown on it to copy files to the correct SD partition, three different microSD cards ( Patriot 8GB class 4? No. Kingston 4GB class 4? No. Run to the store and buy a Sandisk 32gb Class 4? Yes!) ... I'm running and enjoying it.
Questions:
1. Is there a way to take a screen shot? Which leads me to question 2 (I wanted a screen cap the highlight what I'm seeing)...
2. At the home screen in portrait mode, the top 15% and bottom 15% of the screen seem unused. In landscape, the screen seems to be all used. Is this common?
3. I've installed "cm-10-20121231-UNOFFICIAL-ovation.zip"; of course there's bound to be updates. My concern is by repeating the install procedure, I will wipe the device clean and have to start-over with the "Here's my Gmail account, here's me going to the App Store and re-installing my 15 programs" etc.
I believe I read there's a way to book into CWM instead of directly into CM10; that would allow me to insert any updated zip and "install zip from sd card" -- I just don't want to lose all my settings.

1. Yes, you can take screenshots. Go to settings/system/power menu and put a check mark in screenshots. The you can hold the power button and the screenshot choice is there.
2. That must be the stock launcher doing that. I use AdwEx and it does not do that. Try a third party launcher.
3. You can do what is called a dirty flash where you flash the update directly over the top of the old one. All apps and settings remain. Just download your new zip with the HD+ to your sdcard media partition and boot to recovery with the power menu. Choose the zip and flash it with no wiping and everything remains.

Leap,
Thanks... I got the screen shot working - this is the stock launcher; on top, from the bottom of the Google-Voice widget to the top of the weather widget is dead space.
And on the bottom, from the bottom row of icons to the menu bar, it's dead space. I bought the Nova Launcher app when it was $0.25 and use that for booting without CM10; maybe I'll ply it on top of CM10.

Question WhatsApp folder in Android 11

Hi.. In Android 10, Whatsapp folder used to be in root folder (emulated/0), but in Android 11, it has moved to Android/media folder. The big problem it has is - everytime you wipe data to install a ROM (with decrypted storage), Whatsapp along with media needs to be backed up, which is a pain. Does someone know a workaround here so that WhatsApp has its folder in the root directory? Thanks.
Mine is on emulated...maybe you change them.

That's surprising.. Will Whatsapp not have a consistent way of saving its data across A11 devices?
Looking forward to few more users posting their experiences. Hopefully there should be a workaround for cases like mine..

For me in android 10 and 11 is the same. The whatsapp dcim download... folders and other self created folders aren't backupped in TWRP data partition.
So I guess everyone has this problem and you have to manually backup "media" like others and yes it's annoying.
This is a reason why I bought again a phone with micro sd slot. I've got a fast sd inside for backup, because storing data on external drive it's much more time trashing.

For me.. The ideal scenario would be to have WhatsApp folder like a normal folder in internal storage, like camera photos etc. That's the way I used to have on my last device (with A10). This made flashing ROMs very easy, just wiping data was good enough and no need to backup Whatsapp. Now with A11 ROMs for me, it's in data folder, hence even wipe data would remove it.
If you are having your WhatsApp folder as a separate one in internal storage (not under data), let me know if you did anything different. Thanks.

Thanks.. So that's clear whatsapp is treating my account differently.. Not sure why don't I have whatsapp folder in root directory of internal storage..
Tried this now - uninstalled WhatsApp, moved WhatsApp folder to root of Internal storage, reinstalled Whatsapp, and guess what - WhatsApp automatically moved full WhatsApp folder back to Android/media. This is so strange, can't seem to find a way to have my WhatsApp folder in the root Internal storage directory. What's confusing me more is the different treatment with different devices..
