kernel enquiry - Moto X Q&A

Ive got a stock rooted uk moto x 4.4.4 kitkat with xposed, what is the best custom kernel to run for better battety life

You're not going to be able to flash a kernel with a locked bootloader, which is what I'm guessing you have since you didn't mention it in your post.

Roms and kernels make very little difference in battery life.
Battery life depends on signal strength while on data, setup and usage. ?

Stock kernel if you are on a stock (or stock based) ROM.

[Q] custom rom for xperia TL lt30at ?

i have official jb 4.1.2 firmware 9.1.F.1.120
which custom rom to put in?tnx, sorry for bad english
Honestly, you should experiment to see what roms work best for you. There are a lot of excellent roms on here made by really talented developers who put in a lot of hard work.
I'm currently using Peetr_ 's Hybrid rom. Even with no undervolting (due to locked bootloader), with only setCPU (set cpu profile to 384mhz-486mhz when screen is off) I'm getting insane battery life- 53 hours of standby time without charging and still ticking at 61% (granted, the phone was actually used for an hour.)
Hope you find something you like.

Refering to my post in the HybridRom thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48796459&postcount=1018 Do you know if there is a way to install the stock kernel to a unlocked bootloader phone.
As I have a permanently locked bootloader, I am unable to try out any custom kernels. I do have a Nexus 7 FHD with an unlocked bootloader, and by experience, a custom kernel does help with battery life, as it gives you the option to undervolt the phone, among other tweaks already implemented by the developers of the kernel.
I had a look at the NK kernel features, and it does give you those options. Slight undervolting should help. I suggest sticking with what you have. Remember that the main source of battery drainage would be the screen. My screen is off most of the time, with short timeouts and liberal usage of the on/off button (screen is off when listening to music).
Hope this helps.

Stock ROM vs Custom ROM

With all the hype about the official sense 6 ota rolling out I've been considering reverting back to stock w/ root. The reason is I dont use many of the features that custom roms offer, I like how sense 6 looks and prefer it to be stock (no init.d support etc).
I dont care about features or performance, my only concern is battery life, so how does the stock rom compare to custom roms on the HTC One in terms of battery life?

I would say stick to stock as much as possible because custom roms have bugs and u have to wait till devs finds any solutions

I find that quite interesting
you are on xda-developers but recommend staying stock... somewhat of a controversy there, no?
and stock doesn't have bugs?
I have to agree with slogger. I tried most of custom ROMs on xda and none of them can match my stock 4.4.2 in combination with Elemental kernel. I have perfectly smooth, fast phone and my battery lasts around 50 hours off charge with moderate use with CPU OCed to 2.05 GHz

The same way you flash a kernel on a custom rom. Flash it from custom recovery. Make sure that the kernel you want to use is Sense compatible

I read that that wont work, since the stock rom has a secure kernel. You would need an unsecure kernel in order to be able to write another on over it.
But ill give it a shot regardless.

No you don't. The secure kernal affects for example deleting system apps or any bloat software that you don't want. It will be back after a reboot. You can flash anything in recovery no probs

Stock and debloated & tuned .157, with custom kernel, is ideal for battery life. Yes.

Kernels

So im currently on cm 13 nightly and my battery life has been awful. I just been reading about kernels for it and saw it could improve battery life by alot. I never installed a kernel for it. Should I? and will it help battery life out alot?
with a custom kernel you can change the governor and settings, frequency, etc which could help with battery life. it all depends on the settings you choose. I use iiWoodStock's settings on my turbo with a -40uv And I get excellent battery life and performance

There's only one custom kernel for our Quark and that's BHB27, either for Lollipop or Marshmallow, by @baybutcher27. It's based on CM's "stock" kernel by @Skrilax_CZ, which you are running, but has extra tweaks, options, governors, TCP algorithms, etc.

Make sure you are installing the Marshmallow kernel if you are running CM13, not the Lollipop one.

Yes just flash it in recovery.
I'm thinking your battery life is caused by cell standby doing the drain.
If you turn off Mobile Data while you are connected to wifi, cell standby won't drain your battery, you can still make calls and send texts. Just turn data back on and Wifi off when you go somewhere and you should not have any massive battery drain anymore

ok thank you I appreciate everyone help. Im going to do that from now. Ive actually always been a big fan of cyanogenmod. You have any recommendations on what to set the governors to? I dont even make it through a day anymore. Have to charge my phone around 6 everyday.
I am using yankactive myself
But a lot of people prefer zzmove profile 5 for battery life

In Kernel Adiuter under the CPU tab, change the governor to zzmove, then go under CPU tunables on the same page and scroll down till you reach profile. Touch it and choose profile 5

All you can use on stock Verizon firmware is stock Motorola kernel. You are already running that.
BHB27 kernel is for the custom ROMs like Bliss, Resurrection Remix, Open Kang, Mokee AOSP, CM13.

Best marshmallow ROM for battery life?

I feel like I should be able to find this easily on my own but I'm having more trouble than I anticipated. I've been trying tons of note 7 Roms with no luck battery life wise. At this point I'm looking for any type of ROM that has great duration as long as it's marshmallow.

xposed pretty much works with odexed marshmallow stock firmware you dont need deodexed roms.
On lollipop required deodexed roms for xposed.
I am on stock pk2 n910t latest firmware and xposed works without any issues.

And what baseband should I have? EPG2 causes battery calibration issues and there is no fix yet. Could you suggest some BB too?

I am on Pk2 latest bl\modem i am using stock official firmware but i am rooted with twrp and xposed works just fine on stock rom.i am not using any deodexed rom.
I uninstalled as many built in apps as possible and i got 5hours SOT.
SOT depends on your usage i am always on wifi if i use mobile data the dafinetly i will get less SOT.
brightness always less then 25℅,black wallpaper for homescreen and lockscreen to save GPU energy.
While my device in pocket i always turn on powersaving mode to make cpu deep sleep and hibernate apps by greenify.
By this steps you will get preety good battery life.

Yep absolutely.
You have 2 choices
1st choice ,if you want stock 4.4.4 kitkat then flash N910T2 firmware in odin and do wipe data factory reset after flash .you will be on stock kitkat 100%.
2nd choice, if you want rooted roms like dynamic kat or firekat then you have to flash 5.1.1 OK1 firmware then flash twrp recovery after that from twrp flash any kitkat rom you wish but must flash nadia kernel with kitkat rom otherwise you may stuck on samsung logo because you are on lollipop bl/modem.
Nadia Kernel 4.4.4 is in link below.
https://mega.nz/#!accnkb6B!f_wdM79WXZ2UYy2El87DXYctihB40MBjV4imBKlhoDo
I will not recommend youto go back to kitkat because many apps and games required 5.0 or higher these days kitkat is almost dead but if you will use as basic phone chatting, media etc then its fine.i just noticed that even youtube does not support 1440p/1080p videos on kitkat and there is no option to change quality.
after all its your device and do as you wish i am here to help.
N910T2 stock nonrooted firmware link below
Extract and flash in odin.

So I grabbed a stock deodexed marshmallow ROM for a week or two and it is surprisingly by far the worst battery life I've ever had heh. I get like 1.5 hrs sot and I have to recharge almost twice a day.
Are there any suggestions? Both for other Roms or for fixing a stock ROM battery life?
Go back to 4.4.4. I get 7+ hours SOT. I never went to MM as I bought a 6P last Feb. I'm getting my Note 4 ready for my mom as shes moving to T-Mobile. After reading a bunch the last day or so it sounds like to much BS going on with any updates above 4.4.4. I remember 5.0 and 5.0.1 were destroying battery life which is why I never updated and 6.01 sounds like to much of a strain or wast optimized properly for the Note 4.
It works like this
Kitkat best battery life but a little choppy and some apps dont work because it to old
Lolopop 5.1.1 (not 5.0.1) is very smoth and has good battery life, but not as good as kitkat.
Marshmelow is the smoothest but has horrible battery life no matter the rom or what you do.
I tried absolutely everything and come to the conclusión that stock 5.1.1. With root + greenify y by far the option. Everything works great and i have about 5 hours sot without having to compromise anything.
I am alzó trying an app that puts the phone in 1080 but still dont know if it makes a diference or not. (ir runs cooler)
