Since the biggest battery drain seems to be the QHD screen, I've been wondering if I can buy a 1080P and swap it in.
The most likely donor would be a Moto X 2014, since they use the same AMOLED 5.2" display.
Potential issues:
-video connector: I have not seen teardown videos. Can anyone help me determine if the display ribbon cables/pinouts are the same?
-display/housing: Moto LCDs are tough to separate from digitizers... This may require a new Droid Turbo housing/digitizer, plus a new Moto X 2014 LCD screen)
-android resolution: Does Android auto detect resolution? If not, we might need an unlocked/rooted device to change this in Android.
-capacitive buttons: I think this is built into the software on the Droid Turbo, so they should continue to work without duplicate (onscreen) controls
Cost: could be minimal by reselling my mint condition QHD LCD/digitizer/front housing.

I think would be easier to look for an app or a way to change the screen resolution instead of changing the whole screen. Many users use the LG G3 with 1080p and get good results with battery (not big increase). One backdraw is that it maybe requiere root, that is currently unavailable as far as I know.

does any one have the details for effective screen size after button displacement for the V and the T. I compared the T to my gs2 and it looked pretty much the same,
Screen Size Math
I've been doing some screenshot-pixel comparisons between the TL (1280x720) & the Optimus G (1280x768).
The buttons seem to be about 80pixels on the bottom, effective resolution of 1200 x 720. That's 94% of the Optimus G (by pixels). So, for instance, a 48 pixel icon on the Optimus G would be 4 mm. That same icon would render 3.75 mm on the TL.
That said, the Optimus G's screen is larger generally (4.7" over 4.55"), so the difference might be even larger - 48 px on the G might be over 4mm.
Importantly, the TL's aspect ratio with the buttons is the same as the Optimus G's (whose buttons are off-screen). Note: the HTC One X has both the 720p 4.7" screen AND off-screen capacitive buttons.
Finally, doing some pythagorean theorem yields screen sizes (buttons included for the TL) of:
TL: 3.966" x 2.231"
LG: 4.030" x 2.418"
That might not be what you were asking, but enough to get you moving on the right track.

Hello.
Just received brand new Moto G 2014 5" version and comparing the screen colors to Moto G 2013 4,5" version, makes me quite depressing. I noticed, that 2014 model screen is noticeable darker and yellow compared the 2013 model screen, which is bright and blue, I just can't believe that 294 (2014) vs 326 (2013) ppi pixel density is so visible?
My first opinion was, that screen is definitely faulty, as I also noticed such difference once before, when my 2013 model was replaced - screen of the new one was much more brighter.
However, if all 2014 version screens are so dark, then we need a fix ASAP, as right now display brightness in auto mode is too low , it's difficult to use the phone in normal daylight, only manual brightness editing helps, but this is workaround which uses more battery.
I did sent same description also to Motorola forum, hoping that Motorola engineers puttting Moto G 2013 and Moto G 2014 model side by side, compare screens brightness in auto mode, and edit the firmware and publish it.
Right now I ordered a replacement as I just can't believe what I saw.

Update your device to latest Build version KXB21.85.23 size is around 120 MB
1. Touch issues solved
2. Auto-brightness issues solved.
3. Added Google Now Launcher
The color temperature on 2014 model is warmer (shifted towards < 6500K) as compared to 2013 model (shifted towards >7500K). Its perfectly okay. And regarding display pixel density its quite obvious that the clarity is not that great as compared to 2013 model.

The update is already installed, but I don't see improvement. I can live with less colorful screen, but I can't live with much darker screen - http://www.upload.ee/image/4293011/DSC_0760-1.jpg
I think Motorola should adjust 2014 model screen brightness to same level as 2013 have. Or add option to adjust screen color ourselves, like some Xperia models have.
I never use auto brightness so I don't know about that, but my screen isn't dark at all
White balance is better with new moto g. I use both and with original moto g the white ballance is way to blue. I also have some backlight bleeding issues with original one. Autobrightness is set too low on the new moto g 2nd, especially in low light environments, but if you manually boost brightness, it is bright as hell.
Since I'm fed up with my damn lg phone (my worst mistake ever in technology), do you think that it is a good idea to change it with a Moto G 2014?
I'm happy after switching from a sony z1
Sent from my XT1068 using XDA Free mobile app
Why would you do that? I like the phone too but a Z1 is leagues ahead.
Sent from my XT1068 using XDA Free mobile app
smashed the screen of the z1 now using it with a mouse,
also the moto g 2014 is just a pleasure to hold and the bezels are much smaller making it easier to type on and use, the phone looks great ,has dual front speakers, it doesnt overheat like my z1 and it has less sharper(lower res) but much better screen z1 had horrid viewing angles and a yellow hue
performance wise I didnt notice much of a difference in fact apps like reddit is fun and xda did shutter while scrolling on the z1 but not on the moto g also the most demanding game i play is avabel and it runs just as well on the moto g if not better, also bear in mind that i was using slimkat and a custom kernel on the z1 with overclocks on the cpu(with undervolt) and gpu, on art runtine... on a side note even on 1.2 ghz cpu and 200mhz gpu the z1 would heat up a lot more than the moto g
end rant...
Yes, it is a great idea, go for it, you won't regret it

I had a LG P880 before, Moto XT1068 is more responsive, has better battery life.
You won't see difference beetween 720p and 1080p.
I don't regret the change

That's really good to know, I thought so but I wasn't sure.
Did you noticed anything different in a negative way from the lg4x to the Moto g 2014 (apart from half the internal storage)?
Not really.
Some widgets and minor functionalities are missing (espacially compared to CM11 I'd installed on my LG...), but you can easily install xposed framework and gravity box.

More than about software I meant about hardware (screen, camera, size etc).
Screen has good quality (maybe brigthness should be higher outdoor compared to LG)
Camera quality is very good too, responsive enough.
Audio stereo not too bad
GPS fixes very fast (within 5 seconds !)
Battery life : 2 days 1/2 (airplane mode during night)
From now on I didn't test everything, like front camera for example.
I was looking for a phone with a 5 inches screen, smooth UI (despite only 1gb), evolutive (soon Android L), cheap. Moto G 2nd Gen is one of them.
Thanks for the opinions guys, I just got my Moto g 2014 from Argos
Hello all,
I recently return my Nexus 6 because the max brightness paled in comparison to my LG G2 and the phone was just unwieldy. I thought I'd give the Moto X (2014) a shot because it's the perfect size for me. I decided to go to the AT&T store yesterday and see it in person. It's beautiful but I was, again, let down by the max brightness. It doesn't compare to the G2 in that front. However, I read on AnandTech that the Moto X has a display boost mode that brings the brightness up to 390 nits. Compare to the 242 nits it normally pushes, that's awesome!
"What's interesting to note is that the brightness is similar to that of the 2014 Moto X, another recently released Motorola device that sports an AMOLED panel. However, even Moto X has an auto boost mode which pushes it up to 390nit"
Does anyone know how to enable this? I spent an hour at AT&T trying to figure out enable this boost mode and increase the brightness. I couldn't find it anywhere. Is Anandtech wrong? Is the brightness simply subpar on the Moto X?

I read it as a sort of critique in that "even the original Moto X has an auto boost mode", implying that the new one doesn't. Even then, I don't think it's something you can just enable. I think the ambient lighting needs to reach a certain level for it to take effect.

Thanks for replying to steven. I'm kinda glad I didn't buy it now. That's a shame. Such a beautiful phone.
the new moto X (2014) is much brighter and easier to read in direct sunlight than the original X. (i own both). if for some reason the new X does not get bright enough, go into settings/display and turn off "adaptive brightness." then increase brightness to 100%. nice and bright. even indoors, 100% brightness is not as bright as 100% with "adaptive brightness" disabled. I keep "adaptive brightness" enabled and can usually read it fine in direct sunlight. I will admit that with "adaptive mode" enabled, occasionally it will not always enable the "extra bright mode" as soon as I would like but it is readable at 100%. AMOLED has never been as readable in direct sunlight as TFT screens but I prefer amoled for its better blacks, better energy efficiency and more vivid colors. the new X has the best amoled screen I have ever seen.
I am running stock lollipop

The screen brightness limitation on the Moto X 2014 is subjective. One man's "really bad" is another man's "satisfactory".
Some people may like their screens really bright in general, so when they go outside with the Moto X it feels dim to them. I've never had an issue reading the display in direct sunlight personally, and if I ever did I would just turn away from the sun so that a shadow was created. When I'm outside for long periods of time I tend to be socialising, making a phone call or travelling somewhere; therefore elite visibility in direct sunlight isn't a requirement for me.
Sometimes an opinion represents an individual's tastes and needs rather than a universal truth. To each his own.

Just got the Moto X a few weeks ago. Just go to settings - display - turn off adaptive brightness
My Moto X 2013 is getting old. Too slow, not enough RAM.
But it's such an amazing phone, I cannot find anything to replace it!
There a few things I cannot give up:
- Size: all the new phones are too big. I want to be able to use it with my thumb in one hand. I need something no wider than 2.75" (70mm)
- Active Display: I cannot go back to pushing a button to turn on my phone and see alerts.
- Twist for Camera: Simply awesome. A dedicated button would be fine.
All I really need is:
- More RAM
- Faster CPU
- SD slot
- As pure as possible Android experience (or possibility to root and flash CM)
I'd also really prefer an AMOLED display. Once you get use to those blacks, there's no going back. (And the ambient display.)
Contenders:
- Nubia Z9
- OnePlus X
- Galaxy A5
- Galaxy Alpha
- Xiaomi Mi4C
- Asus Zenfone 2
- Huawei P8 Lite
- Moto G 3rd gen (too big really)
- BQ Aquaris M5
- Sony z3c
- Sony z5c - seems great but too expensive.
Note: I live in Spain, so US Carrier compatibility is a non issue.
I'm with you, and on Verizon so my choices are even more limited!

My friend, you and I are in the same boat with identical needs. Im going with Moto X Pure for Verizon
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
Your width requirement is going to limit you significantly. I'd say that the Nexus 5X or one of the new Moto phones (X Pure, Turbo 2, Maxx 2) are going to be your best bet given your list. The Motorola devices should have the twist to camera, the 5X has double tap power for camera.
i've been eyeing the Turbo2 for a while. I believe that root has been achieved on that device, which is a key requirement for me.
but otherwise, my Moto X still has plenty of RAM and runs as fast as it did when I first got it 2 years ago. my lone gripe is battery life - which deteriorates over time anyways.
I'm also in agreement with the OP. I can't work up any interest in a phone bigger than 4.0 ->4.7 that can be bootloader unlocked, and has some way to wake the thing without wearing out buttons. There aren't many around anymore despite it having once been a popular form factor.
I happened to get ahold of a really great deal (~100 bucks or so) Galaxy Alpha 850m from Brazil. I got it for a little work project but realized it was just about everything I like despite being out of production. I'm currently using both, one for personal , one for work. The Alpha is unlocked & rooted, a perfect size, but has the octa-core exynos so no "tap or wave-to-wake" functionality I'm aware of. With a slightly extended battery, it lasts at least 2-3 days and fits in any pocket I've got. I can't figure out why they took the Alpha out of production so soon since it was only out in mid-2014.
My Verizon xt1060 dev is a great phone as well, but now that they're raising the rate on my old grandfathered unlimited plan, I'm losing interest, and having been using either t-mobile or att with the Alpha, I'm happy with the coverage (well, on any ATT related plan anyway), and on t-mobile for my neighborhood or town. When the price raise goes into effect next year, I'll give up on Verizon for awhile, if not for good.
Battery-wise re 2013: I'm only noticing the usual 5.1 battery complaints. Yeah, it uses about 40% more battery than 4.4.4 did, but after some tweaking, it's surprisingly good. I get ~1.5 -> 2 days regarardless of how I use it, but I'm not a "watch movies on my phone" sort of user (or a gamer). I switched it back awhile ago to 4.4.4 for a couple of weeks and realized the battery was still in fine shape, but I do like 5.1 better so that's where it is.
I'm waiting until someone puts out a good <=4.7" phone again before getting anything else. I can't deal with those Buick sized phones.
One plus X or Z3C are your best bets.Although I don't think you'll see big difference in performance, nor much difference from the extra gig ram either.
