charging & battery issue - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi
right now i am only able to charge my z3c through my computer when it is on. but it works just fine for my other devices. ive tried different cables and ports but no luck.
also, my battery seems to be acting weird. it went from around 80% to around 40% after one hour of no usage.
http://imgur.com/a/L2Sw5
any suggestions on how to fix these issues would be greatly appreciated.
thanks.

Are you using the dock?

Does the phone charge when off and plugged into a regular outlet?
For the battery drain you might want to install an app like Battery Doctor or Carat to try and identify the apps that might be causing it. I'd be suspicious of Poweramp. Looks like you get a pretty strong signal from the screenshot you posted, but were you in an area with zero reception at any point? That drain batteries fast, especially with LTE on.

it mightve been in areas where there are no lte support so it switches to 4g
would it be because of that?
and i forgot to mention, when i said one hour of no usage, i meant i didnt use the screen. i did just listened to music for the whole hour.

Battery Problem

Hey,
I thought updated firmware fixed the stock messaging battery issue?
My phone had a full charge and 2 hours later, 15 texts sent/received, im down to 87% Just unlocking my screen now, i went from 89% to 87%!!
What is going on!! I have SMS popup.
I was just looking up stuff because my phone lately has been draining fast and I really have not been using it. I am at 65% and I have barely been using it today. It came off the charge at 10 and it's 12:30 now. Something is up. I can't seem to find an app that tells me which apps are using data in the background cause I think that might be my problem. Also, I checked Spare Parts and it said Facebook was Partially Awake for over 30 mins with only 14 hours up time. Hmm. I don't even have Facebook set to auto sync.

Post your up and awake times.
I've had this issue since I had this phone. I go to school with 100% charge at 8:30 and by the time I get out 12:30 it's usually around 55-65% with very limited usage. I've had fresh rom, modaco, and all the available aosp roms and it's the same issue no matter what so I just learned that if I want this phone it's has to live on the charger when I don't use it.

How many bars do you get in the classroom? Poor phone signal will drain a phone very fast. There's a couple conference rooms here where I work in the basement where phones get no signal and I see the battery on my phone drain much faster. This happened on all my previous phones as well (HTC Mogul, Diamond, etc.).

In school.....
how does it perform outside of school.. when you are at home on weekends or other places????
I am only guessing here..
but at big university, the buildings are very big.. and sometimes in hard to get receptions areas...
so, the phone might be looking for the phone network, and that will drain the battery very fast...
sorry, where can I find up and awake times? Total newbie I know...
I found "Time spent without sleeping: 36 Minutes"
I also noticed that my battery is at 73% now for SysTray Monitor but the HTC battery icon is nowhere near 1/4th gone. Looks like 1/10th is gone.
battery drain at school
another thing to consider is that if the school has wifi available and your's is turned on on the phone, it may be connecting or attempting to connect, to the school's wifi. just a thought. i tend to turn mine off, as well as my bluetooth headset, when i go to work. seems to help, but i also have a battery drain problem. this doesn't solve it, but, like i said, it helps. i also turn my screen off manually, rather than just setting it down and letting the screen turn off automatically. every bit of energy saved helps, but it will only get about 25-50 percent better. doesn't completely solve the battery drain problem. if anyone finds a sure-fire way to solve this problem, please post and post and post. i've seen this problem arise all over the place on XDA as well as other sites. may even start a new thread with the solution so it will pop up in the search.

I guess this isn't something I have not really looked at but now it does make sense, b/c in some rooms it is hit or miss so i'll just throw it into airplane mode when i'm indoors and see how that goes. Thanks
by the way...
i am also experiencing a situation where when i plug my phone in to charge, it will charge regularly through about 80%, then it seems to fly through the last 20% within a matter of minutes. it was at 82% last night when i checked it (it was already on the charger for about an hour). then i put a bowl of soup in the microwave for 2 1/2 minutes. when my soup was done i just happened to look at my phone, and it was already up to 96%! that just can't be accurate. something is causing it to either charge improperly or the battery charge reading is somehow inaccurate. anyone else experiencing this strangeness when charging that also has the battery drain problem? as many times as i've seen these problems posted together, they have got to be related to each other.
There is an option to wipe the battery in Recovery.
Charge the phone fully, and then Wipe the battery while it is still 100% charged. This will help the battery reflect a more accurate percentage.

well, are you guys using modaco's custom ROM or kernel? there's an issue with the power management that HTC didn't include when the released the kernel... but i'm not completely sure what causes it.

[Q] Nook battery dies fast

I only have 5 widgets, and my brightness is also low as possible. I have wifi off when i don't use it, but my battery still dies kinda fast. Should i delete cell standby? And what else can i do?
You really should define "kinda fast" so folks can answer objectively

What drain are you seeing with screen off/idle?
with the screen off for about 5 hours i saw a 21% drain.
Drop the widgets and livewallpaper if you've got it. Retest standby.
If you're getting high battery drain during standby your nook isn't going into deep sleep and chances are that background overhead translates to poor efficiency at idle when the nook is on as well. Couple poor idle efficiency with CPU intensive work while in use and your overall battery life is terrible.
If you're forcing the nook to stay out of deep sleep for other reasons like keeping wifi alive then you may be stuck with living with some sort of elevated drain but you can minimize it by reducing idle overhead by keeping widgets to a minimum and refraining from using live wallpapers and other background services that aren't critical.
Tacking on to here rather than starting a new thread...
My Nook Color rooted, but still on stock ROM goes from 100% charge to 25% in about 8-9 hours with zero usage. Obviously something's going on (I suspect it's that I have Advanced WiFi sleep policy set to never and am away from WiFi), but no other widgets running. I do have Google Voice app installed.
What I'm curious about is what would normal standby battery drain be? What would be typical after 8-9 hours of just sitting untouched in my brief case?
Thanks in advance!

I believe typically overnight you should see less than 10% drain.
In CM7 at least, in Spare Parts you can see what uses the battery while the NC is asleep.

No, not yet. It's 100% stock, other than rooting and downloading apps. I'm going to put SystemPanel on it and see if it gives a clue.
I've got a good idea of how to track down battery issues on most android devices, I was just mostly curious what the typical drain other rooted users saw was.
Thx for the suggestions to all.

Good lord, this isn't going to help anything. Normal Nook Colors on the stock ROM (and kernel....) use about .2%/hr in standby.
Clearly something is running wild on this guys NC, and needs to look at Spare Parts. Install it from the market.
System Panel as well as other tools can help as well.
Okay, I'm a pretty smart guy usually, but I'll publicly put on the dunce cap and admit to my ignorance on this one.
System Panel actually showed some amazingly good lack of drain with all my apps running.
The reason my battery was so low when I checked it each afternoon is because even though I thought I was charging the thing over night, I wasn't. I was using a regular micro-usb cable for my phone to plug the thing in most nights.
Turns out the Nook Color has an extra deep micro-usb receptacle and requires a better endowed male plug to get it charged properly.
Lame...
(Lame of me, but also lame of B&N to make such a design decision. What were they thinking? I HATE proprietary connectors.)

Extra WIDE, not deep. And there's good reason USB standards are .5A over the typical 4 pin connection. The B&N cable has FOUR extra pins, delivering the other 1.4A of power.
Extra deep. Two stages...

Thanks for the extra info about the additional voltage; so it will charge much faster this way? (rhetorical question)
I still am annoyed at yet another non-standard cable that I'll have to carry around with me when I travel to keep various devices charged, but in the scheme of things it's a minor annoyance. Stuff like this should be standardized, IMHO.
And it's extra DEEP, not wide. It's the same width as a standard micro-usb cable or I wouldn't have been able to stick my phone's charging cable into it at all, but I was able to, it just didn't go in deep enough to charge at all. On the flips side, the B&N cable fits into my phone, but only inserts half-way deep; if it were extra wide it wouldn't fit into my phone at all.

You can always go into settings, about phone, and check what apps are using power. You might as well turn LTE back on cause you're just wasting money if you're paying for something you're not using. Turn off B/g Data sync and try to manually sync all data instead. And the new google maps has been causing some issues according to things i've heard lately, even reviews on the market say so.
Since 4g and 3g are billed the same, how is he paying more for something he's not using? If you are in a 3g only area, or a weakly covered 4g area, go ahead and turn off that 4g. It's silly to drain your battery on a service that you aren't able to make use of anyways...

I was under the impression that when LTE[4G] is turned off via settings--> mobile network then he will only get 2G on his device. It was a mistake, I forgot Verizon would use 3G since no 2G is there. Of course I know when you leave a 4G area you revert to 3G/2G/GPRS<--for GSM, I said that since on GSM in settings you can only do 3G preferred, 2g only, 3g/2g auto...There's no way on GSM to get just 3G unless you leave the 4G area.

I tried it too for giggles sake, and no go. You pull the battery at anytime, and it doesn't run.
Edit... I lied. Plug it into the wall. It will go to the boot animation, without the battery in, but will black out, and the bottom lights will flash. And even though, I had a full charge before plugging in, after putting the battery back in, the LG symbol comes up. Then its telling me, its charging. Interesting. Going to the gym, and I will come back and see where I am at with charging.
Edit... Nifty. battery is reading 4181 at 100% I should have downloaded the battery widget before I did this, so I could have compared.
Should I, or do I need to recalibrate my battery every so often, or should it run like this from now on?
OH now I am mad!!!! How dare you show me how to calibrate my battery. LOL!! I have been unplugged for 2 hours and 15 minutes. I am down to 4133 and still at 100% Normally after 2 hours I am down to 90-95%. AWESOMENESS!!!!

I do it maybe every 2 or 3 months or even when you change ROMs. The ? @ 60% is a Droid/Moto things only you won't be seeing that on other phones, but the trick still seems to work nonetheless. You can get spare parts to see the battery reading if you don't want the widget.

[Q] Horrible battery on 4.3 sense roms?

Has anyone else had this problem? since upgrading to a 4.3 sense based rom (tried 3 different roms), my battery life has become horrible..i can barely get 2 hours of screen on time whereas i used to get 4+ on 4.2.2 roms.
i know alot of people have said that 4.3 improves battery, but it hasnt for me, its done the opposite.
also has anyone noticed strange heating up of the device? for example in asphalt 8 the device thats slightly hot and then cools down while playing. but in games like candy crush or zynga poker the device continuously gets hotter and hotter..
tips/fixes/stories anyone?
Mine has been really good. Like, 3-4 hours screen time good. When I'm on wifi (N only, G wifi drains a lot) my battery percent just flatlines on the graph until I pick up the phone again. Sounds like a rogue app since I don't have this issue. I run ARHD 20.1.

I'm running arhd 20.1 aswell. And I would LOVE to see that happen again, my battery drains around 10% overnight, and I'm a really late sleeper, so that means in 5 hours it's lost 10% on standby..and it's weird cause WiFi shuts off after about two hours,so I know that's not causing the problem.
App usage shows android system as the app using the most battery. When I check in the morning it shows android system and kernel to be the top two users.
Could it be a radio problem? I've seen a decrease in signal since ive upgraded to the 4A.17 radio from firmware 2.24.
I'm thinking about flashing the minsense Rom or even a ge rom and see if that helps the problem.
It doesn't seem to be a rogue app cause I actually have less apps then I did on 4.2.2, and none that are new..

I'm still running the current T-Mobile firmware, not 3.x. (I'm still S-ON with hboot 1.44) Thought that was worth noting.
Have you tried putting the phone on WCDMA/GSM auto instead? If your LTE signal is weak (or any kind of signal is weak in general) I see this phone's battery life usually take a nose dive. It has so far from my testing saved me a ton of battery to switch the phone manually into GSM only when I'm inside a building at work to get more bars, then switch back to LTE auto when I leave. Try leaving it on overnight on different radio settings, and with and without wifi. It could be a cell radio drain. And btw get GSAM battery monitor, the stock stats don't seem right to me. Android System being high in the HTC battery stats tells you nothing really from what I'm seeing so far.

the funny thing is i dont have data, since i get wifi wherever i am. i also think its a radio problem though, my gsm signal never seems to be full, and people constantly tell me on the phone that they cant hear me. so what im doing (right now) is flashing a ge rom, specifically sinless rom, then im going to flash the new ge radio, 4A.18, and see how that plays out, prolly going to flash a 4.3 kernel aswell so i can uc to 162mhz or whatever the value is.
i seriously believe its the radio+lack of kernel on 4.3 sense roms that are causing this problem for me. so once this is all done ill test it for the rest of the day and see how it goes. thanks so much for your help

If you don't use any apps, of course system uses the most.
You need to check for wakelocks. If you have unexpected battery drain, it's likely that the phone is not sleeping properly, i.e., being kept awake. Betterbatterystats, gsam, wakelock detector etc.
What was the change in signal attenuation, or are you just saying the the display bars are different?

Android System being high in the HTC battery stats tells you nothing really from what I'm seeing so far.

i use apps, just nothing new compared to when i was on 4.2.2.
and no wakelocks according to gsam, i lost 20% overnight (7 hours)
i dont get what it is. i upgraded the radio to 4.19 now, but for the signal issues, it included lower bars, bad audio in calls, and random loss of wifi.
i removed basically every app, besides some essentials like facebook, whatsapp, and a few others.
i tried switching to an ge rom, but i just cant stay on it for too long, vanilla android is so plain compared to sense.
so the last thing i can think of, is a rom known for its battery life. not asking for a comparison, just your opinion in which rom gives the best battery on 4.3. any suggestions?

Charge your phone up all the way, put it in airplane mode, and unplug it for an hour then don't touch it. Then post your battery percentage. If it isn't still 100 or 99 then you have a more severe problem that actually relates to the battery itself.

been an hour and 5 minutes, still 100%.
so im guessing it has something to do with the radio?

Show us a graph of your signal strength from GSAM, and show us a screenshot with how many bars you have. At least you know now that the battery is definitely not shot. It is probably mobile data related...hmm did you ever try letting the phone sit with mobile data disabled as well? It should drain almost as minimally as airplane mode.

So wait, your signal is really good but your phone drains like crazy, and while you're on WiFi? Okay, what wifi router are you using and is it G or N and is it dual band?

its absurd i know..its already down to 93% with 9 minutes screen on..
and its a dual band router, im normally connected to the 2.4ghz band, and its with wireless ac, which the one supports. Which is weird cause i thought ac improved battery life..
edit: im an idiot, wireless ac only works on 5ghz bands, but that still doesnt explain the drain on wireless n..as my previous router was also wireless n

Have you tried 5 ghz N by forcing the router or your phone to operate only at N speed? I use a TP-Link dual band N router and I remember seeing s drain of about 4 percent overnight for 8 hours of full idle with full sync.
I have tried with both 2.4ghz n and 5.2ghz ac, same problem persists
Awake is 3x screen on, I don't think that's normal, somethings keeping the phone awake much longer

so ive done a bunch of other tests, and i can confirm its wifi thats causing this massive drain, not wakelocks, not roms, or anything else.
when the phone is left with wifi on, but not being connected to any network, battery drain is minimal overnight.
its the same on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands, so it this a router problem? if so, do you know any tips that could fix it?
Do you have "Best wifi performance" checked? That seems to eat battery.

i have no option for best wifi performance, just "wifi optimization". i found the problem, it has something to do with my new router and its bad compatibility with android devices. the phone seems to be awake 2x the screen on time and the main culprit is "wlan_rx_wake" wakelock

VS980 Lollipop Bug Issues

I figured this would be a good place to have a General thread discussion the problems and solutions for the newly released Verizon Lollipop update.
- Excessive Battery Drain seems to be the main issue
- Power LED Notification light stays lit - may have been fixed by using updated partition components

The power led does not stay lit. it's due to the new feature in the rom that allows the rear lights to stay on with new downloaded apps. unclick that and its fine.
-Slow AC charging. Even when using the OEM cable and adapter.
Anyone else have gps issues? No lock.

I do not have access to LTE, It doesn't show up under network type and strength.
Any ideas?
I've had no major issues with xdabbebs stock ROM. I can't seem to add widgets to the lock screen. Is this no longer an option ?

Was it available on stock? I think we forget what functionality stock has since we probably haven't used it in so long. You could kdz back to KK and see.

It was an option on his 2.3.0 ROM which was basically stock LG. I updated my N10 to 5.1 and lost the feature on it as well. I was using dashclock widget for quite some time on both.

Google removed lockscreen widgets in Lollipop
Lock Screen
I'm trying to figure out what clicking on a notification on the lock screen is suppose to do. When i click on it it just shows an empty box. Kind of looks like a blank, missing lockscreen widget. Am I missing something here? I would think it would take me to the app or maybe give me an un-truncated version of what I clicked.

Battery drain is an issue. I'm hoping after a few days of the new update settling in it will get better..

Wireless charging
I still need to do more testing and observation with this, but my phone hasn't charged at all the last 2 nights while sitting on my wireless charger at home. It's a cheap charger that claims 1A max input (I think) plugged into the LG official charger which is 1.8A. Meanwhile, at work I have an official LG Qi wireless charger using another official LG power supply @ 1.8A. I installed Ampere just now and my wireless charger only registers +20mA. My battery was at 78% and wasn't hot, so it should have drawn more power. I plug the USB cable directly into my phone and Ampere reports around +930mA. I put it back onto the Qi charger and it still says 20mA, yet the battery is charging at a normal rate (from 78% to 92% in like 20 or 30 minutes). i'm curious what Ampere will show on my other wireless charger, the one that has failed to charge my phone the last 2 or 3 nights.
I tried searching for this app I used to use that had a widget that would show you current power draw, then also had historical data with graphs and all. Ampere is bare-bones just shows you current power draw, so it's not nearly as useful. I need to find that other battery app but there are like 30 apps named Battery Widget...does anyone know which app I'm talking about? (EDIT: Found it. It's Battery Monitor Widget, by 3C. It only shows +15mA on wireless charger and +300mA with direct charging while battery at 96%).
UPDATE: Battery Monitor Widget (BMW, hehe) is showing me some more stats for wireless charging and it's not stuck at +15mA the whole time. I think I'll pay the $1.13 to remove ads since AdAway isn't blocking them. I just need to drain my battery and charge it up a few times to get some more info. My battery was already at 96% when I started looking with this app, so the numbers should be low. I see a few entries where it was at +61mA or +42mA, which seems about right for when it's at 99% or 100% battery level.
I don't have a g2 anymore. I have a g3. I wanted to know if anyone is having a audio Bluetooth streaming issue in their car. I use a pioneer avh x4600bt and the music skips excessively after 30 seconds of play.

Not on 4.4.2. Stream audio for 50 mins each way to and from work almost every day and no issues. Haven't made the lollipop upgrade yet, phone works pretty good as is and don't want to take a battery life hit.

Thanks for the response. I didn't have any problems when I was on kit kat either. I was wondering if anyone had this problem with Bluetooth streaming on lollipop.

I seems to have battery drain in only stand by mode. I don't know if there is a way to find out if device deep sleeps without a root.
Anybody?
Mainly it will not charge properly (6-10 hours for full charge), and it loses charge if you're navigating or using Pandora while plugged in.
Sometimes the whole OS becomes unresponsive, but I think that's mainly from the task manager that was set to clear ram every 12 hours. I turned that off.
The dismal GPS was promised to be fixed with lollipop, and it still sucks just as much as ever.
2 things they got right, however. Auto screen brightness is almost perfect except when it auto dims because it gets warm. Also the camera is faster in the dark! Finally.
It's like the wired charging is being limited. Wireless charging feels the same to me as it did on KitKat, but I wasn't measuring the charging while on KitKat. I have almost never charged my G2 by plugging it in, but when I do I see really low values and it takes just as long as wireless charging takes. However, I don't lose power if charging while doing stuff like Pandora, at least I don't think I do. I will do a little test and see, but I'll use something a lot more power-hungry than Pandora, like maybe Trials Frontier with full brightness.
EDIT: OK I have some results of a little test:
I played Trials Frontier @ full brightness and no charging for 30 minutes or so. The battery was draining at around 27% per hour or -300mA (-300 seems wrong. I would expect something more like -750mA). I went from 98% to 83%.
I then put it on the wireless charger in landscape, which makes it a little bit of guess-work trying to line it up perfectly with the Qi charger. I continued playing the game for 25 minutes or so. When done, I had 84% battery. It barely gained any charge, but it charged nonetheless. I see two readings in this time frame: first one says I gained 6% an hour and 68mA, the second one said 0% change per hour and -127mA (not sure why it claims 0% for that).
I think what happened was the battery got warm and it cut the charging rate, but I don't know at what temps it does this and stuff. I believe I would lose battery level if I kept playing but I'm not sure. Battery was at 41°C at the time it said my usage was 0% per hour, -127mA.
I think I need to have a lower battery level to start with, then try wireless vs wired and stuff. Has this already been done and I'm just wasting time? I am just curious about wired vs wireless at this point I think.
I want to report something. I found why my battery was draining. It was Google Now. I never used it, but somehow it got activated during upgrade. I signed out and drain stopped. I hope this would help somebody.
After two days on stock 39A
Battery seems to charge A LOT slower on non LG charges. Using the Lg charger and cable seems a bit slower but Ok. I have two G2s one on 27A and one on 39A. Using the stock charger and cable the phone on 27A draws about 1200 mA the one on 39A draws 700 mA. If I use an older charger the phone on 27A draws 800 mA the one on 39A draws 200 mA or less.
Battery drain seems a bit worse on 39A but not terrible. I am comparing to the 27A rooted and debloated. Considering all the extra junk that now runs in the background it's not unexpected.
BT streaming in the car has greatly improved for me with the 39A update. I can now use Viber and Skype call in my car and even switch between phone calls and skype calls. Music streaming also works much better.
