bionic as wifi only tablet replacement - Motorola Droid Bionic

I am looking to convert my old Bionic into a wifi only mini tablet (Ipod touch concept) for my daughter.
My question is what would be the best ROM to use for this?
The biggest concern is battery life. I have an extended battery but want to find something that is really efficient. I don't mind under-clocking as this will be a web surfer and texting, while on WIFI, machine for the most part.
I'd appreciate any input on this.

My Droid Bionic is running CyanogenMod, I like it for the most part despite the fact that it's not very efficient. The thing about the Bionic is it's simply not a very efficient device. No matter what ROM you end up using, it's gonna drain the battery pretty quick. I do not have the extended battery, so I'm not sure how much it effects things. My phone lasts 4-6 hours on a full charge with light-moderate use and about 12 hours if it's completely idle. Once again, I do not have the extended battery, so you will get a lot more. If I was you I would just soak test each of the following ROMs and see what works best for you.
Paranoid Android
CyanogenMod 11
AOKP
You will also need SafeStrap Recovery in order to install these.

On a new-ish standard battery, I'm getting good battery life with SlimKat 8.0. On the later ones something is keeping it awake about 60% of the time for me (some kind of kernel wakelock listed as rx_wake in BetterBatteryStats). I don't know if something changed in SlimKat or if there's something wrong with ax562's builds (something kernel-related?).
I tested it at idle in airplane mode (not sure if wifi was off or if I turned it on) and it lasted nearly 5 days. By the way, I noticed that if you reboot with airplane mode on but wifi still enabled, it remembers and puts it in airplane mode with wifi enabled - no third-party app necessary. A rom with this feature would be great for using it as a wifi-only device.

Once you install SafeStrap you can test as many as you want risk free. I have tried a couple and have found in this order : Cyanogenmod > Liquid Smooth > Eclipse > Stock
Cyanogenmod is by far the most updated and will soon receive Lollipop. My vote goes to CM
AOKP is abandoned
Paranoid Android could be abandoned at any time since it is considered Legacy on their site.

I use nothing but the latest CyanogenMod snapshot. My Bionic is WiFi only. I'd also suggest lowering the pixel density from 240 to 220 to give more of a mini-tab feel.

Directed towards op (if you are not sure how)
Best way to do this is with xposed (rather than modifying buildprop). You won't break anything that way.

I use ROM Toolbox to do it. You're not breaking anything if you only change that one value by the way.

If you change the DPI globally you risk breaking things like the Play Store and possibly other apps. Not to mention the app costs $6 and is virtually useless since you can do 98% of the things listed for free, including the DPI available via xposed for free.
**edit** even worse, it's $6 after being on sale for 50%. Talk about a rip-off.

is it really reliable?

Hi,
I know that i am asking this in a Nook forum, but i'll ask as XDA users are always very true on their opinions.
I went some pages back of the forum, and i realised that many people have problems with the Nook.
So let's say a very good friend is interested in buying the Nook. Would you reccomend it to them?
Thanks

All the problems I've had with the Nook are related to custom roms and such, and even then, if you stick with, say, CM7 stable, the only real problem is the battery life since it doesn't fully sleep.
I don't think the stock rom really has many issues.

What he said... Custom roms are really the only place software errors pop up, even then... Each rom's creator is working each to day to improve it.
If you stay on stock, I doubt you'll have any problems.
Would I recommend it to a friend? Sure, but most of them are apple fanboys and wouldn't even give it a chance.
I would recommend the nook without hesitation. The problems most people seem to encounter are with b&n's quality control in regards to things like lcd bleed and dead pixels. I was fortunate enough to get a good one on my first go, but some people had to return it a few times before they got a decent one. Beyond that, I think as long as one reads before jumping into something like rooting and flashing roms, the nook gives you one heck of a bang for your buck.
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
I had absolutely no problems with something as simple as rooted stock, though I wasn't entirely happy with the B&N interface when it wasn't the reason why I bought the Nook. Yes, you'll probably spend a few hours (4-8) just learning what's going on and all the terminology, trolling around on the forums and getting the hang of things...
But honestly if you stick with a popular custom ROM like Phiremod, a CM7 Nook is just as stable as the real thing. The biggest downside right now is the battery drain while sleeping. And even that is not too big a deal; it's better than your phone for sure, and you just gotta charge it once every two days. So it doesn't have the 15+ day stand-by that the iPad would, whatever.

sounds like you need better friends
Also, I would and do recommend it to my friends.
Assuming you want to either leave it stock or are ok with tinkering and use CM7 then yes. If you are expecting an ipad then get an ipad so we don't get another "why doesn't this work like an ipad thread."
I have a rooted Motorola Milestone, and i was using for several months CM roms, but for the last 2 months i am in MIUI...
Thus i dont think i will have many problems with modding it.
How long does it need to power on? In order to understand if is worth shutting it down, instead of standby...
I thought that CM, fixed the issue with devices not sleeping? At the beginning the solution was to restart the phone after a charge...
Sent from my Milestone using Tapatalk
It takes 1-2 minutes for my cm7 nook to go from off to booted and usable. The sleep issue isjust a nook problem, cm7 sleeps fine on everything else. I loose about 20- 25% of the battery over 12 hours or so when I'm not using the nook. For me, that's not a big deal.
The only problem I have ever noticed with my nook is wifi disconnect when the screen has been off for a long time. All I have to do is go into wifi settings(I have a shortcut on my home) and it reconnects to the network. Although after flashing cm7 nightly 54 and the latest 4/23 test kernal I don't think I've had it disconnect.
Nook setup:
CM7 nightly 54
dalgrins OC 4/23 test kernel @ 1.3 ghz with interactive governer
Mad-murdocks honeycomb theme
I absolutely love my nook! Very fast and very responsive.
Ok great thanks.

it will last probably a day and a half, maybe longer.
4-5 hours of use with cm7, 5-6 with stock rooted
(hours of use are total time using it not counting breaks in between use periods)

This is pretty close if you're playing games all day... The only difference in this case with CM7 and Stock is the overclock kernel, otherwise you should get the same battery life.
Keep in mind turning things like wifi and lowering the display can increase battery life.
I usually get through an 8-9 hour day easily with moderate use (books, games, web browsing, manga, no video though).
If you're using it for Reading and surfing the Web nonstop, I've gotten close to 7 hours on CM7(more with WiFi off) and close to 8 on the Clean Froyo ROM(which sleeps properly). I don't have my Kernal OverClocked.

I don't know anything about those tabs so I can't say anything negative or positive about them. However, the only thing that I would tell you to look out for is to see how much dev. support those two have. Paying slightly more for a heavily developer supported device (as the NC is) is an extremely wise investment.
I get a full day of use on mine. Love my nook. the geek factor of running cm7 on a nook is worth it to me lol. bluetooth kinda blows sometimes but its getting better as devs beast on it. also charging must be done with the stock charger "to reach full charging speed" due to some voltage change on original cord to allow more output. but for transferring any cord works great. And the devs are some of the best!

Truth. I would avoid anything that does not have a project like CM aimed at it. It does not have to be CM but it should be at least as active.
Two points:
1) The Nook will charge with other chargers and a standard cable jsut at 1/4 the speed as charging from an unknown source which is governed at 500ma while the stock charger is 2000ma.
2) Before buying either of the other tabs, check their screen resolution. I don't know much about them but the screen is the expensive part and what makes the Nook the best deal out there.
I regularly recommend my NC to anyone that will listen. Just converted a potential ixxx customer today as he likes to play with his toys in ways other than intended by the manufacturer. As stated above the dev support for the NC is spectacular.

[Q] I wish Samsung would release official JB!

Hello everyone, as the title suggests if only Sammy released JB for my phone. I love the look and feel of it on the S3 but just dont like the phone, its too big and bulky IMHO. I am eagerly waiting for the S4.
Anyway, the reason for the post, i have been using CM10 on my I9000 for the last couple of weeks, i actually love it ands it actually pretty stable but and its a BIG BUT the battery drain finally killed the last remnants of patience i had with it. 12-15hrs on one battery charge is just not satisfactory.....so ive gone back to stock GB 2.3.6 and already the battery life has dramatically increased. Is this a firmware issue or poor hardware I wonder.
In anycase i would like JB back on this phone but I would like at least the same battery performance as GB, so my question really is about which JB ROM i could use?
Anyone got any ideas, recommendations or rom-avoidance advice? Anything would be helpful and much appreciated.
Thankyou!
G.
Use a different modem, and try a tweakable kernel like Semaphore. Also install betterbatterystats. That will tell you what's keeping your phone awake. I get two days out of my worn out two year old battery on the latest CM10 with low to medium use. Back on ICS, before I changed the modem, a RILJ wakelock would keep it awake pretty much all the time and I had about 12-15 hours of battery life. I'd rather Samsung stay as far away from software development as possible because nothing they have ever done in that department has been even remotely usable.
I also wish Samsung would release official JB for the I9000, but I'm afraid it's never gonna happen. They have left the I9000 behind it seems, and I think Gingerbread 2.3.6 was the last ever official update. It's custom ROM's from now on for the Galaxy S.
I wish i could fly.

try a different modem??? try a different kernel??? i apologise i dont really know what you mean....
1. are you suggesting you can change the modem - how on earth do you do that??
2. ive heard the word Kernel being used but actually dont know what one is or what it does. complete novice to all this im afraid - i know about ROMs (for JB) like Cyanogen CM10, Slimbean and HellyBean etc etc, and have actually heard of this Semaphore but not actually knowing what it is!
Can you explain what this all means at all ?
btw - i get your point about Samsung especially on thier own non-andriod phones. to be fair the stock roms work flawlessly on my i9000 and the UI progression from Eclair to GB is staggering...even if it is cloaked as Andriod development....still looks and feels better than any Iphone. Thats what i meant by i wish Samsung would of developed ICS and JB for the I9000.
What helps in terms of battery life CM roms is:
-using 2d as much as possible and 3d only when needed (browsing, downloading apps etc). Problem is that 2g mode will not allow you to use data and make phone calls at the same time
-disable location services or at least gps when not used
-freeze/remove apps you are not using (stock email, talk, gmaps are battery drainers)
-disable CM built in app&data backup and use TB instead
-use lowest acceptable screen brightness
-buy a brand new battery

Hmmmm well all that seems like a gr8 idea but then what would be the point of flashing CM or any JB custom rom if i werent going to be able to use the features within it, like you would an S3 ??!!!! Kinda seems pointless to me... At the end of the day JB is the latest and greatest version, youd want to use and explore its capabilites as much as you can, without comprimising hardware performance..
Surely there must be a non battery draining and stable version of JB out there.......:crying:
@up
Totally agree with you. These are just workarounds that make you able to survive a day without recharging but at the same time limit user's satisfaction from owning a multifunctional device (eg no location and gps = no Google now). I'm switching to SGS2 that will get official jb shortly so will see if it gets better battery life but I do not expect miracles. The only hope in Google and Motorola cooperation. Motorola's battery + updates from Google must make a great combo

Before anything else, please install CM10.1 (http://get.cm/?device=galaxysmtd), CPU Spy (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bvalosek.cpuspy) and BetterBatteryStats. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809)
Now in BetterBatteryStats, look at the "partial wakelocks" near the end of a day's charge and drain cycle. This will tell you what was keeping your phone awake. My money is on RILJ being at the top of the list and active for several hours. If that is the case, you need to change your modem. Check CPU Spy as well to see how much time your phone spends sleeping when it's supposed to.
Modems
The "modem" is basically like a driver file for the phone's radios and such. (Cell radio, WiFi, GPS, etc) It tells the phone how to use those things. So some modems are less efficient or not tuned as well for your specific carrier.
http://soggycashew.weebly.com/i9000-modems.html - Here is a collection of modems packaged in Clockwork Mod zip files. If you were able to install CM10, I'm sure you know how to install them.
Go to the "i9000_release_dates.txt" file and try the most recent one. If you have an i9000M which supports the 850MHz band, only use the 850MHz-capable modems. Likewise, if you have a regular i9000, don't use those. Testing may take at least day or so each. If you're still seeing a RILJ wakelock time more than about 20 minutes a day, try the next latest one.
Kernels
The "Kernel" is sort of like the BIOS in a PC. It starts up first then Android runs on top of it. Android communicates with the kernel, and then the kernel communicates with your phone's hardware. It runs the screen, sound chip, vibrator, radios, everything. Some kernels are basic and only include what they need to run the phone normally (like the stock Cyanogenmod kernel) and some are made to let you change all sorts of settings of how they operate.
I highly recommend Semaphore JB for CM10.1
You'll find that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1786220
And the app to change settings here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.semaphore.sm
For improved power savings, use the app to turn on Deep Idle, make sure WiFi PM FAST is disabled, and you may as well turn on fast charge. (no power saving, but a shorter charge time is nice)
Android
Now this stuff is pretty simple, but it can be overlooked. Make sure to turn off apps that auto-update or at least lower their update frequency as much as possible. These are brutal for battery life. With your Google account, only enable sync for things you NEED to have updated automatically. Like Gmail and Chrome. Things like Contacts and Calendar you can update manually whenever you want but you probably don't need it constantly ready to sync. You can also do things like lower the screen brightness and turn off the fancy stuff, but I don't bother. 100% screen brightness all the time for me. I'd rather have a good experience than another couple minutes of battery.
I really hope this all helps and you can get on the latest ROM without the crippling battery drain these phones sometimes get. And you have the right idea about keeping all the effects and things on. Everything's active when the screen is on anyway, so battery savings will be negligible. Good luck!
All operating systems have a kernel, Windows, OS-X, Linux, whatever, it's just that in a closed system like Windows no-one knows its specifics or can do anything to it, whereas Linux's can be.
(Take a look at your screen when turning on your phone, the kernel image is not the first you see)

They should do that as soon as possible as the JB thing means a great progress in Android development. The new OS is really faster, covers alot of minuses from the previous versions and Samsung, being so good in the last few years they should stay in touch with new, good ROMs if they dont want to begin to have Google as their second conquerent.

Apple just stops updating devices for no better reason than they want to force upgrades, it's not like the old devices wouldn't work. Like what Samsung did here, except at least porting Android over would take a little bit of work/time. Still no better though. Apple also holds "features" back from older devices purely to market something new on their otherwise indistinguishable upgrade. (like Siri)
Nobody, including Apple, should follow Apple's example. I think Samsung should stop bothering with bastardizing Android and just hand the drivers over to the devs here, because they actually make software people actually want to use, and enjoy using.
...its very sad that i9000 won't get ( >= ICS), sgs1 is still very good phone...
Wish, you were here...
successfully using cm10 stable without any customized kernels , no battery drains, just do a factory reset from firmware settings, and you will be happy

CM9, CM10, CM11... which one to choose?

Currently running CM9 on my Touchpad. Use it for web browsing, few games, mostly apps, and occasionally BT w/ my HP keyboard. Not sure if I should upgrade to KitKat (CM11) or go with CM10.1/2, or just stick with what I have. Any suggestions and breakdowns of what each version is best for, in regards to what I use mine for and stability/performance are welcome.
Also, if anyone has any battery information, that would be great. I know CM9 is alright, but it still drains fairly quickly. Thanks guys.

Don't agree with that. Using Flintmans nondata cm11 and its fully usable IMO. No freezes, keboard bt works. I liked the straight update with this nondata rom, nothing to change except system partition size from 300 to 600MB.
If you want cam to work, go for 10.2 though, Milaqs rom seems nice.
i like the non-data media roms since I want to maximize the space I can access on both webos and android easily.
I use JCSullins 4.2.2. Battery drain is great, doesn't even lose 1% in like 5 hours sleeping. Not a data media build which is good as I think they're pointless.
I am using CM10. I used CM11 for a few day and went back. My kiddo uses it for netflix and dish anywhere, so it needed to be a little more stable.

Everything is subjective, you really have to try them yourself to see what works for you and read the comments in the individual thread's to help you make a decision.
But you should have loads of fun trying them.
All the best.
I also use JCSullines 4.2.2.
It is CM10.1 on Kernel 2.6. I believe it is an early January 2014 build ( you can find it by searching for Tenderloin Jellybean with Bluetooth support)
To answer the OP question, each build has advantages.
CM7 was bay FAR the most responsive, and was always able to play local amd streaming content flawlessly.
CM9 provided android 4.0 and the UI enhancements. However it had lip sync issues on local video content. It did however allow very easy updates through "OTA like updates" in the system settimgs options
CM10 -- unknown, didnt try it.
CM10.1 (k2.6)-- basically is CM9 fixed... Mostly. It plays videos well and less battery draim (gone are the days of zero batter without waening and the fear it may be bricked). The issue is that it gets slow with time, perhaps hours or a day.. But youll need to reboot before to long. Videos can lag pretty bad, particularly streaming HD content.
CM10.1 (k3.4) -- unkown, but hopeful. Faster responce, low battery drain, yet possible issues with BT amd or audio/HD videos

Will be moving to CM11 for 4.4.2 support. Had CM10 for a while and loved it, but need 4.4.2 for Xfinity TV support. Can't wait...
Echoing what others have said, I use Milaq's 4.3 rom (cm10.2), which works well for me: stable, relatively low battery drain, BT, camera. It even supports OTG which I use with my DSLR. Great rom. I am planning on experimenting with jc's 4.4.2 on another TP.

I've been using JCSullins 10.1 for a while and just went to his 11. So far the only downside is the current version of Netflix doesn't work correctly. Both bluetooth and camera seem to work correctly though which, if I recall, is a plus over CM9.
I've been using CM9 since i bought this tablet. But its starting to become very unresponsive, there is noticeable lag, it often freezes, so i have to reboot or wait for a really long time and it's very slow for everyday use like browsing etc..
I just updated to latest version of CM9 (only wipe cache and dalvik). What may be the cause of this, since I know that CM9 was much faster when i first installed it and how can i make it responsive again?
might be just the case that you've been installing too many apps
i'm on the last cm9 nightly, and everything works (audio, video/decoding, bluetooth, camera, wifi etc), and everything is as fast as I remember it
additionally, i've flashed the modified kernel that you can overclock the cpu/gpu, so games and whatnot are faster
i've only installed things i actually use, have greenified to hibernate everything when not in use, and go to deep sleep mode after 1 min of screen off
anyways, i sorta want to upgrade to cm11, just because it's newer, is there a version that has everything working and stable except the camera, that's the one thing i never use (i also very rarely use the bluetooth, but i like syncing the ps3 controller to play games)
I'm gong with cm11

I was on CM9 for a long time and quite happy but decided to make the jump to CM11/4.4.2 and have zero regrets.
The updated look and feel is well worth it, the interface and UI is super responsive and much quicker than CM9. This may be due in part to having to do a full uninstall of CM. Battery life is great.
I am on 20140409-SNAPSHOT-jcsullins which is a data media build and frankly was not hard to setup. AcmeInstaller takes care of everything and the only real additional step was resizing the partitions which was super easy with the .zips, I highly recommend mpgrimm2's guide and if you can find it Roland Deschain's guide. Give it a couple of reads and it's really not hard.
Netflix won't work out of the box but again, the fix is super easy, use method #2 from this thread and enjoy, just one .zip to flash and just make sure you are on Netflix 3.2.1 and do not have autoupdate on.

I highly recommend spending about 15 minutes to read through the setup guides, then another 20-30 minutes to go through the uninstall and fresh install of CM11. You will not regret it.
I was using CM9 for a while and recently went to CM11. While others are sharing great success and how great things are running, I haven't been too happy with it. Apps that would normally run are now lagging like no other. Waking up from sleep seems to be an issue. Random reboots. I also still can't access the sounds setting without settings FCing on me. Eh, best of luck to whatever you choose! :good:

Questions about LG L90

I purchased the LG L90 last week, and am now using it as a daily driver (WOOT WOOT). I have retired my old phone (Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G).
I currently have questions about this phone, I love it overall, but some things are kind of bugging me out a bit:
1. Signal & Service: I understand this device is not LTE capable, but my internet speeds are slower than my Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G (which is a really old phone, in a tehcinical perspective), my speeds on "4G" max out to around ~10-11 Mbps where my old phone usually hit ~15-25 Mbps. Furthermore, my Wi-Fi speeds are slower, for example, when I am at work, my iPod can easily pick up ~42 Mbps, but on the LG L90, it barely its ~15 Mbps. Is this just an issue with the phone? I really want to resolve these issues, as the speed does make a difference for me.
2. GPS: I no longer have a physical GPS, as I figured our phones can do the job now, and my old phone did a great job at it. I don't want to say the L90 is bad, but there is some noticable lag, and at times, the GPS is unable to detect where I am physically located. I live in Seattle, so I figured beign a major metro-city, this should not be an issue, any solutions to resolving this?
3. Current ROM: I am running everything at stock, as I don't want to root just yet (warrenty purposes). That being said, if I were to go on a app and hit the home screen, there are those moments where I can see the lag processing all my apps and widgets, as I only see my wallpaper for a few seconds. There is also a crap load of T-Mobile software that I feel like are draining my battery, any possible way to delete that as well?
4. Battyery Life: Obviously, this phone is a better battery life than other phones, but are their best tips/advice on preventing battery drainage? I am a college student, so I am always on the go, and really woud love something that is stable, to also last me the entire day. Any advice on charge cycles and what not? I usually just charge my phone when I am about to go to bed (around 11 or 12 PM) and unplug it after I wake up in the morning.
Those are all my questions/issues... I really love this phone, and bought a nice case and screen protector and it just looks beyond awesome (better than the iPhone 6 ) I would appreciate any help/support you guys have to resolve these issues for me!
It's good idea to install another ROM like CM11 - it makes a big difference compared to stock one, also could mostly solve your issues, but can't provide any proof on that since I don't use these features at all. I know your warranty is void in exact moment of rooting, but it's not a problem to install stock rom again, and at service most of time these guys are too lazy to check logs
If installing a ROM is seriously the only option, what is the MOST stable ROM out there? I honestly don't want to go back and forth trying different ROMs, as at this point, I really do not have the time to do that... I guess any ROM that is stable, fast, and of course light (so my battery's potential is kept to the max!)
1. Signal & Service: You're comparing a true LTE device to a HSDPA+ device. Not the same. HSDPA+ is not true 4G.
2. GPS: GPS is flaky with this device. On stock or a custom ROM such as CM11
3. Current ROM: The only way to remove TMobile's bloatware is to root the device
4. Battyery Life: No special charging cycles. I charge mine basically the same way you do. Battery life is drastically improved running CM11 instead of stock however.
As for installing a custom ROM. Currently the most stable for the D415 is my ROM which a link can be found in my signature. Myself and many others are using it as a daily driver... but there are some issues that I'm currently in the middle of working out.

I was comparing it to my old phone, which does not have LTE, instead it also has HSDPA+.
I'd love to use your ROM, but I also am looking for something that his minimal issues... perfect for a Daily Driver, and never looking back. I really am not into reinstalling ROMs every few days, like some people do, I'd just like to stick onto one thing and go from there.

I've been working feverishly to fix the issues my ROM has. I've worked out most of the issues but while doing so I managed to introduce a new one. Lol. Go figure. Keep an eye on my thread. Ill hopefully be uploading an update with most issues fixed within the next few days.

Woah, what ROM is that you are using? Battery Life on stock is not bad (At least compaed to my previous phone ) but I was trying to go towards the direction of, what are some good tips/advice to saving battery life and what not.
Question: Are you always on 4G? That is completly insane that you manage to pull off that much battery life!

Ah okay. I will keep my eye out for now, once your ROM is close to 100% (there is no such thing as "perfect" haha) do let me know... I respect all the developers who volunteer their time to create these tools available for us, but I also value my time a whole lot!

I'm on the stock D415 with my personal debloating. I don't use greenify or anything, all I have is xposed and gravity box on. Got rid of all the T-mobile crap and the lookout anti virus And yes for the most part I'm in 4g all the time.
Edit: Almost forgot, always have bluetooth, wifi and high battery location services

Do you mind sharing how you did all that? I currently avoid turning on things like Bluetooth while I drive because I am scared of draining the battery (even though I can always charge it) but I also want to keep the charge cycle consistent.
Another question, any good suggestions for Maps? Is Google Maps the best solution out there? I have tried Waze (personally dislike it) and currently am experimenting with Sygic maps, but want to see other options out there as well...
Bump? Seeking more advice on this!
Also, what is a preferable GPS app around here?

I had D415 last night and tested GPS a bit today with Copilot Live USA. The first test in the morning was terrible. The phone took half hour to get a fix, then was swinging between fix and lost every other minute during my commute to work for more than one hour. The second test was great on the way back to home:good:. GPS took <30s to get a fix, and hardly lost any connection, only a few seconds during the 90-minute trip.
SO what did make the difference? I believe the GPS chip in L90 is not great, but workable. It needs sometime to warm up before starting to work. The first test was running Copilot immediately after turning GPS chip on. There is no warm up time, resulting in disaster navigation. The GPS chip was then turned on the entire day, so the second test was almost perfect.
For D415, turn on GPS chip at least 30 minutes prior to using navigation. This way may keep you away from flaky problem.

How to get the most out of my Nook

Hey guys, been using cryogen on my nook for years now, and while I personally believe that it is much faster than stock, it always seems to eventually bog down, and run slow. While there might be an issue with apps or something else I'm doing wrong that keeps slowing down my nook that's not the MAIN purpose of this forum. I'm looking for the best build and settings to get the most out of my nook. Currently i'm running a recent nightly build with CM11, but was thinking about switching to snapshot for a more stable release. There are two things I want to know before doing this:
1. what is the fastest and most stable build available? I've heard in forums about a liquidsmooth build, slim builds, and obviously used nightlys but which is the best? Also CM10 or CM11 does it matter which?
2. What is the best settings for max performance? On nightly I can use the governor to up the CPU, and I know there's a ram setting, but what about the I/O scheduler? whats the optimal setting for this? Also whats the best map performance settings AND what is the best settings for performance/battery for when i'm not playing games but maybe just web browsing.
ONE FINAL NOTE:
There was a time where I enjoyed spending a week tweaking roms and trying to make experimental roms work but now I don't have time. SO what I'm looking for is a STABLE rom that doesn't need much tweaking and can simple be installed through CWM, and either the basic settings to max performance, or a third party program that will do it for me.
PS: these forums have been good to me these past years so I want to also shout out to everyone that contributes and say thank you.
Others may have differing opinions but I have tried all ROMs available and they all have their ups and downs. The nook hd + is a serviceable tablet and well worth what I paid for it but I have given up on the idea of finding a perfect configuration. My nook performs well enough at the moment to prevent my cheap nature from buying another tab.
That being said I am getting my son a nvidia shield tablet for Christmas so he will have to share

I whole-heartedly agree with everything you said.
Except for the part about sharing your son's Christmas present. Good luck with that!
Better than nothing
Given that the first two reply were utterly useless I figured I would post what I have found so far. . . A rom called SlimKat is the fastest rom for the nook hd+ I personally have found. I was hoping that others would post USEFUL information to this forum reguarding other ROMS rather than just stating that the nook is limited (which everyone that owns one already knows hints why were are here in the first place). But if you too are looking for a fast rom try here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-hd/development/rom-dev-slimkat-4-4-4-build-8-1-t2894247/page6
I've yet to tweak it, so i'm not sure if there is a govenor on there or a way to improve how the RAM is used. And I still have no clue what an I/O scheduler does, but I didn't see one on this rom.
Useless, honest, whatever
Try mokee in original android development section. Nightlies are active, pretty stable , and it is interesting. Yes it is in Chinese at first but you can change language
I like slim kat but I get freezes when streaming videos for long periods.

That's probably fixed in the LiquidSmooth F2FS version (Pg. 5 of the LS thread), as it uses different PVR source. FWIW.
I actually find asking to be a moot point.
The roms will act differently according to your needs and uses. One rom may work well for someone and not well for another who's use of it constantly goes up against a bug or other problem. Or maybe you just won't like it.
Short story, just do a full recovery backup of what you currently use and then try the others. When you like one try it for a week. If you dislike it just restore the full backup of your choice - if you make full backups of each of them you can go back to any quite fast just the way you left it.

And hardware (revisions). Take two identical tabs, install identical ROMs using identical methods, and get two different results. One crashes and reboots, the other never does. On a third the battery life suffers or the WifFi misbehaves.

And of course, be prepared to restart and repeat the entire process. Because sooner or later you're going to install something that will sour the milk. Or you just like doing it because it's just so much fun!
jb0756: I've tried them all. The variables are staggering. It's amazing these things work as well as they do.
mcord11758 said it best. The HD+ is ... "serviceable."

If its not up your alley then don't go there. There are things in the ocean and a breeze in the air.
